Effective theory of magnetization plateaux in the Shastry-Sutherland lattice

Two-dimensional magnetic metal-organic frameworks with the Shastry-Sutherland lattice

Mn-PBP is discovered to be the first ferromagnetic 2D MOF with the Shastry-Sutherland lattice and the predicted Curie temperature is 105 K.

Inspired by the successful synthesis of Fe/Cu-5,5′-bis(4-pyridyl)(2,2′-bipirimidine) (PBP), a family of two-dimensional (2D) metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with the Shastry-Sutherland lattice, i.e., transition metal (TM)-PBP (TM = Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) has been systematically investigated by means of first-principles density functional theory calculations and Monte Carlo simulations. Mn-PBP is discovered to be the first ferromagnetic 2D MOF with the Shastry-Sutherland lattice and the Curie temperature is predicted to be about 105 K, while Fe-PBP, TM-PBP (TM = Cr, Co, Ni) and TM-PBP (TM = Cu, Zn) are found to be stripe-order antiferromagnetic, magnetic-dimerized and nonmagnetic, respectively. The electronic structure calculations reveal that TM-PBP MOFs are semiconductors with band gaps ranging from 0.12 eV to 0.85 eV, which could be easily modulated by various methods. Particularly, Mn-PBP would exhibit half-metallic behavior under compressive strain or appropriate electron/hole doping and a Mn-PBP based spintronic device has been proposed. This study not only improves the understanding of the geometric, electronic and magnetic properties of the 2D TM-PBP MOF family, but also provides a novel spin lattice playground for the research of 2D magnetic systems, which has diverse modulating possibilities and rich potential applications.

Emergent bound states and impurity pairs in chemically doped Shastry-Sutherland system

Impurities often play a defining role in the ground states of frustrated quantum magnets. Studies of their effects are crucial in understanding of the phase diagram in these materials. SrCu₂(BO₃)₂, an experimental realization of the Shastry-Sutherland (SS) lattice, provides a unique model system for such studies using both experimental and numerical approaches. Here we report effects of impurities on the crystals of bound states, and doping-induced emergent ground states in Mg-doped SrCu₂(BO₃)₂, which remain stable in high magnetic fields. Using four complementary magnetometry techniques and theoretical simulations, a rich impurity-induced phenomenology at high fields is discovered. The results demonstrate a rare example in which even a small doping concentration interacts strongly with both triplets and bound states of triplets, and thus plays a significant role in the magnetization process even at high magnetic fields. Our findings provide insights into the study of impurity effects in geometrically frustrated quantum magnets.

Exploring the impurity-induced phenomena facilitates the understanding of emergent quantum materials. Here the authors show the anomalous magnetization transitions as well as demonstrate the relation between the impurities and the excited spin states in the Mg doped Shastry-Sutherland compound SrCu₂(BO₃)₂.

Degeneracy of the 1/8 Plateau and Antiferromagnetic Phases in the Shastry-Sutherland Magnet TmB_{4}

The 1/8 fractional plateau phase (1/8 FPP) in Shastry-Sutherland lattice (SSL) spin systems has been viewed an exemplar of emergence on an Archimedean lattice. Here we explore this phase in the Ising magnet TmB_{4} using high-resolution specific heat (C) and magnetization (M) in the field-temperature plane. We show that the 1/8 FPP is smoothly connected to the antiferromagnetic phase on ramping the field from H=0. Thus, the 1/8 FPP is not a distinct thermodynamic ground state of TmB_{4}. The implication of these results for Heisenberg spins on the SSL is discussed.

Dynamics and Instabilities of the Shastry-Sutherland Model

We study the excitation spectrum in the dimer phase of the Shastry-Sutherland model by using an unbiased variational method that works in the thermodynamic limit. The method outputs dynamical correlation functions in all possible channels. This output is exploited to identify the order parameters with the highest susceptibility (single or multitriplon condensation in a specific channel) upon approaching a quantum phase transition in the magnetic field versus the J^{'}/J phase diagram. We find four different instabilities: antiferro spin nematic, plaquette spin nematic, stripe magnetic order, and plaquette order, two of which have been reported in previous studies.

Crystals of bound states in the magnetization plateaus of the Shastry-Sutherland model

Using infinite projected entangled-pair states, we show that the Shastry-Sutherland model in an external magnetic field has low-magnetization plateaus which, in contrast to previous predictions, correspond to crystals of bound states of triplets, and not to crystals of triplets. The first sizable plateaus appear at magnetization 1/8, 2/15 and 1/6, in agreement with experiments on the orthogonal-dimer antiferromagnet SrCu2(BO3)2, and they can be naturally understood as regular patterns of bound states, including the intriguing 2/15 one. We also show that, even in a confined geometry, two triplets bind into a localized bound state with Sz=2. Finally, we discuss the role of competing domain-wall and supersolid phases, as well as that of additional anisotropic interactions.

Magnetization of SrCu2(BO3)2 in ultrahigh magnetic fields up to 118 T

The magnetization process of the orthogonal-dimer antiferromagnet SrCu2(BO3)2 is investigated in high magnetic fields of up to 118 T. A 1/2 plateau is clearly observed in the field range 84 to 108 T in addition to 1/8, 1/4, and 1/3 plateaus at lower fields. Using a combination of state-of-the-art numerical simulations, the main features of the high-field magnetization, a 1/2 plateau of width 24 T, a 1/3 plateau of width 34 T, and no 2/5 plateau, are shown to agree quantitatively with the Shastry-Sutherland model if the ratio of inter- to intradimer exchange interactions J'/J=0.63. It is further predicted that the intermediate phase between the 1/3 and 1/2 plateaus is not uniform but consists of a 1/3 supersolid followed by a 2/5 supersolid and possibly a domain-wall phase, with a reentrance into the 1/3 supersolid above the 1/2 plateau.

Incomplete devil's staircase in the magnetization curve of SrCu2(BO3)2

We report on NMR and torque measurements on the frustrated quasi-two-dimensional spin-dimer system SrCu(2)(BO(3))(2) in magnetic fields up to 34 T that reveal a sequence of magnetization plateaus at 1/8, 2/15, 1/6, and 1/4 of the saturation and two incommensurate phases below and above the 1/6 plateau. The magnetic structures determined by NMR involve a stripe order of triplets in all plateaus, suggesting that the incommensurate phases originate from proliferation of domain walls. We propose that the magnetization process of SrCu(2)(BO(3))(2) is best described as an incomplete devil's staircase.

Multi-step magnetization of the Ising model on a Shastry-Sutherland lattice: a Monte Carlo simulation

The magnetization behaviors and spin configurations of the classical Ising model on a Shastry-Sutherland lattice are investigated using Monte Carlo simulations, in order to understand the fascinating magnetization plateaus observed in TmB(4) and other rare-earth tetraborides. The simulations reproduce the 1/2 magnetization plateau by taking into account the dipole-dipole interaction. In addition, a narrow 2/3 magnetization step at low temperature is predicted in our simulation. The multi-step magnetization can be understood as the consequence of the competitions among the spin-exchange interaction, the dipole-dipole interaction, and the static magnetic energy.

Magnetostriction and magnetic texture to 100.75 Tesla in frustrated SrCu2(BO3)2

Strong geometrical frustration in magnets leads to exotic states such as spin liquids, spin supersolids, and complex magnetic textures. SrCu2(BO3)2, a spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet in the archetypical Shastry–Sutherland lattice, exhibits a rich spectrum of magnetization plateaus and stripe-like magnetic textures in applied fields. The structure of these plateaus is still highly controversial due to the intrinsic complexity associated with frustration and competing length scales. We discover magnetic textures in SrCu2(BO3)2 via magnetostriction and magnetocaloric measurements in fields up to 100.75 T. In addition to observing low-field fine structure with unprecedented resolution, the data also reveal lattice responses at 73.6 T and at 82 T that we attribute, using a controlled density matrix renormalization group approach, to a unanticipated 2/5 plateau and to the long-predicted 1/2 plateau.

Local physics of magnetization plateaux in the Shastry-Sutherland model

We address the physical mechanism responsible for the emergence of magnetization plateaux in the Shastry-Sutherland model. By using a hierarchical mean-field approach, we demonstrate that a plateau is stabilized in a certain spin pattern, satisfying local commensurability conditions derived from our formalism. Our results provide evidence in favor of a robust local physics nature of the plateaux states and are in agreement with recent NMR experiments on SrCu2(BO3)2.

ENCORE: An extended contractor renormalization algorithm

Contractor renormalization (CORE) is a real-space renormalization-group method to derive effective Hamiltionians for microscopic models. The original CORE method is based on a real-space decomposition of the lattice into small blocks and the effective degrees of freedom on the lattice are tensor products of those on the small blocks. We present an extension of the CORE method that overcomes this restriction. Our generalization allows the application of CORE to derive arbitrary effective models whose Hilbert space is not just a tensor product of local degrees of freedom. The method is especially well suited to search for microscopic models to emulate low-energy exotic models and can guide the design of quantum devices.

Theory of the field-induced BEC in the frustrated spin-1/2 dimer compound BaCuSi2O6

Building on recent neutron and NMR experiments, we investigate the field-induced exotic criticality observed in the frustrated compound BaCuSi2O6 using a frustrated model with two types of bilayers. A semiclassical treatment of the effective hard-core boson model shows that perfect interlayer frustration leads to a 2D-like critical exponent varphi=1 without logarithmic corrections and to a 3D low temperature phase with different but nonvanishing triplet populations in both types of bilayers. These further suggest a simple phenomenology in terms of a field-dependent transverse coupling in the context of which we reproduce the entire field-temperature phase diagram with quantum Monte Carlo simulations.
