Mechanical properties of beams from self-assembled closely packed and aligned single-walled carbon nanotubes

Hierarchical three-dimensional layer-by-layer assembly of carbon nanotube wafers for integrated nanoelectronic devices

We report a general approach to overcome the enormous obstacle of the integration of CNTs into devices by bonding single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) films to arbitrary substrates and transferring them into densified and lithographically processable "CNT wafers". Our approach allows hierarchical layer-by-layer assembly of SWNTs into organized three-dimensional structures, for example, bidirectional islands, crossbar arrays with and without contacts on Si, and flexible substrates. These organized SWNT structures can be integrated with low-power resistive random-access memory.

Capillary bending of Janus carbon nanotube micropillars

We present a scalable process for the fabrication of slanted carbon nanotube micropillar arrays by inclined metal deposition and capillary self-assembly. Local control of the micropillar angle from vertical to nearly horizontal is achieved, and is explained using a finite element model. These structures may be useful for microscale contacts and anisotropic smart surfaces.

The fabrication of vertically aligned and periodically distributed carbon nanotube bundles and periodically porous carbon nanotube films through a combination of laser interference ablation and metal-catalyzed chemical vapor deposition

Scalable fabrication of carbon nanotube (CNT) bundles is essential to future advances in several applications. Here, we report on the development of a simple, two-step method for fabricating vertically aligned and periodically distributed CNT bundles and periodically porous CNT films at the sub-micron scale. The method involves laser interference ablation (LIA) of an iron film followed by CNT growth via iron-catalyzed chemical vapor deposition. CNT bundles with square widths ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 µm in width, and 50-200 µm in length, are grown atop the patterned catalyst over areas spanning 8 cm(2). The CNT bundles exhibit a high degree of control over square width, orientation, uniformity, and periodicity. This simple scalable method of producing well-placed and oriented CNT bundles demonstrates a high application potential for wafer-scale integration of CNT structures into various device applications, including IC interconnects, field emitters, sensors, batteries, and optoelectronics, etc.

Wavelike deformation traveling on a carbon nanotube

The propagation of wavelike ripples on a carbon nanotube (CNT) induced by the radial impact of a C(60) molecule is investigated by molecular dynamics simulations. The ripples start at the impact point and spreads through the tube, accompanied by energy transfer. The ripples would effectively reduce the local energy concentration around the impact point. The propagation of ripples is clearly affected by the diameter but is independent of the chirality of the CNT. Noticeable diffraction occurs when the deformation ripples encounter obstacles or narrow slits, which indicates that the propagation of ripples can be used to detect defects in the CNT. This work provides new and exciting possibilities for CNTs to serve as energy buffers, sensors and new nanoelectromechanical devices.

SWNT array resonant gate MOS transistor

We show that thin horizontal arrays of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) suspended above the channel of silicon MOSFETs can be used as vibrating gate electrodes. This new class of nano-electromechanical system (NEMS) combines the unique mechanical and electronic properties of SWNTs with an integrated silicon-based motion detection. Its electrical response exhibits a clear signature of the mechanical resonance of SWNT arrays (120-150 MHz) showing that these thin horizontal arrays behave as a cohesive, rigid and elastic body membrane with a Young's modulus in the order of 1-10 GPa and ultra-low mass. The resonant frequency can be tuned by the gate voltage and its dependence is well understood within the continuum mechanics framework.

In situ characterization of vertically oriented carbon nanofibers for three-dimensional nano-electro-mechanical device applications

We have performed mechanical and electrical characterization of individual as-grown, vertically oriented carbon nanofibers (CNFs) using in situ techniques, where such high-aspect-ratio, nanoscale structures are of interest for three-dimensional (3D) electronics, in particular 3D nano-electro-mechanical-systems (NEMS). Nanoindentation and uniaxial compression tests conducted in an in situ nanomechanical instrument, SEMentor, suggest that the CNFs undergo severe bending prior to fracture, which always occurs close to the bottom rather than at the substrate-tube interface, suggesting that the CNFs are well adhered to the substrate. This is also consistent with bending tests on individual tubes which indicated that bending angles as large as approximately 70 degrees could be accommodated elastically. In situ electrical transport measurements revealed that the CNFs grown on refractory metallic nitride buffer layers were conducting via the sidewalls, whereas those synthesized directly on Si were electrically unsuitable for low-voltage dc NEMS applications. Electrostatic actuation was also demonstrated with a nanoprobe in close proximity to a single CNF and suggests that such structures are attractive for nonvolatile memory applications. Since the magnitude of the actuation voltage is intimately dictated by the physical characteristics of the CNFs, such as diameter and length, we also addressed the ability to tune these parameters, to some extent, by adjusting the plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition growth parameters with this bottom-up synthesis approach.
