Nonexponential London penetration depth of FeAs-based superconducting RFeAsO(0.9)F(0.1) (R = La, Nd) single crystals

Bulk and Single Crystal Growth Progress of Iron-Based Superconductors (FBS): 1111 and 1144

The discovery of iron-based superconductors (FBS) and their superconducting properties has generated huge research interest and provided a very rich physics high Tc family for fundamental and experimental studies. The 1111 (REFeAsO, RE = Rare earth) and 1144 (AEAFe4As4, AE = Ca, Eu; A = K, Rb) families are the two most important families of FBS, which offer the high Tc of 58 K and 36 K with doping and without doping, respectively. Furthermore, the crystal growth of these families is not an easy process, and a lot of efforts have been reported in this direction. However, the preparation of high-quality and suitable-sized samples is still challenging. In this short review, we will summarize the growth of materials with their superconducting properties, especially polycrystals and single crystals, for the 1111 and 1144 families, and make a short comparison between them to understand the developmental issues.

Diamagnetic Response of Potassium-Adsorbed Multilayer FeSe Film

Intrigued by the discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in a single unit-cell layer of FeSe film on SrTiO_{3}, researchers recently found large superconductinglike energy gaps in K-adsorbed multilayer FeSe films by angle-resolved photoemission and scanning tunneling spectroscopy. However, the existence and nature of the high-temperature superconductivity inferred by the spectroscopic studies has not been investigated by measurements of zero resistance or the Meissner effect due to the fragility of K atoms in air. Using a self-developed multifunctional scanning tunneling microscope, we succeed in observing the diamagnetic response of K-adsorbed multilayer FeSe films, and thus find a dome-shaped relation between the critical temperature (T_{c}) and K coverage. Intriguingly, T_{c} exhibits an approximately linear dependence on the superfluid density in the whole K adsorbed region. Moreover, the quadratic low-temperature variation in the London penetration depth indicates a sign-reversal order parameter. These results provide compelling information towards further understanding of the high-temperature superconductivity in FeSe-derived superconductors.

p-wave superconductivity in iron-based superconductors

The possibility of p-wave pairing in superconductors has been proposed more than five decades ago, but has not yet been convincingly demonstrated. One difficulty is that some p-wave states are thermodynamically indistinguishable from s-wave, while others are very similar to d-wave states. Here we studied the self-field critical current of NdFeAs(O,F) thin films in order to extract absolute values of the London penetration depth, the superconducting energy gap, and the relative jump in specific heat at the superconducting transition temperature, and find that all the deduced physical parameters strongly indicate that NdFeAs(O,F) is a bulk p-wave superconductor. Further investigation revealed that single atomic layer FeSe also shows p-wave pairing. In an attempt to generalize these findings, we re-examined the whole inventory of superfluid density measurements in iron-based superconductors and show quite generally that single-band weak-coupling p-wave superconductivity is exhibited in iron-based superconductors.

Superconducting properties of thes±-wave state: Fe-based superconductors

Although the pairing mechanism of Fe-based superconductors (FeSCs) has not yet been settled with consensus with regard to the pairing symmetry and the superconducting (SC) gap function, the vast majority of experiments support the existence of spin-singlet sign-changings-wave SC gaps on multi-bands (s±-wave state). This multi-bands±-wave state is a very unique gap stateper seand displays numerous unexpected novel SC properties, such as a strong reduction of the coherence peak, non-trivial impurity effects, nodal-gap-like nuclear magnetic resonance signals, various Volovik effects in the specific heat (SH) and thermal conductivity, and anomalous scaling behaviors with a SH jump and condensation energy versusTc, etc. In particular, many of these non-trivial SC properties can easily be mistaken as evidence for a nodal-gap state such as ad-wave gap. In this review, we provide detailed explanations of the theoretical principles for the various non-trivial SC properties of thes±-wave pairing state, and then critically compare the theoretical predictions with experiments on FeSCs. This will provide a pedagogical overview of to what extent we can coherently understand the wide range of different experiments on FeSCs within thes±-wave gap model.

Evidence for nodeless superconductivity in NdO(1-x)F(x)BiS2 (x = 0.3 and 0.5) single crystals

We study the superconducting pairing states of NdO(1-x)F(x)BiS2 (x = 0.3 and 0.5) by measuring the magnetic penetration depth Δλ(T) using the tunnel-diode-oscillator (TDO) technique. An upturn is observed in Δλ(T) as well as the magnetic susceptibility χ(T) in the low-temperature limit, which is attributed to the paramagnetism of Nd ions. After subtracting the paramagnetic contributions, the penetration depth Δλ(T) follows an exponential-type temperature dependence at T ≪ T(c), providing evidence of nodeless superconductivity for NdO(1-x)F(x)BiS2. This is further supported by the analyses of superfluid density ρ(s)(T), which can be well described by a BCS model with an energy gap of Δ(0) ∼ 2.15 k(B)T(c).

Superfluid density in the s±-wave state of clean iron-based superconductors

Based on a phenomenological model and the Kubo formula, we investigate the superfluid density ρ(s)(T) and then the penetration depth λ(T) of the iron-based superconductors in the coexistence region of the spin-density wave and superconductivity, and also in the overdoped region. Our calculations show a dramatic increase of λ(0) with the decrease of the doping concentration x below x = 0.1. This result is consistent with the experimental observations. At low temperatures, ρ(s)(T) shows an exponential-law behavior, while at higher temperatures, the linear-in-T behavior is dominant before it trends to vanish. It is in qualitative agreement with the direct measurement of superfluid density in films of Fe-pnictide superconductor at x = 0.08. The evolution of Δλ(T) can be roughly fitted by a power-law function with the exponent depending on the doping concentration. We show that the Uemura relation holds for the iron-based superconductors only at very low doping levels.

Antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations above the dome-shaped and full-gap superconducting states of LaFeAsO1-xFx revealed by (75)As-nuclear quadrupole resonance

We report a systematic study by (75)As nuclear-quadrupole resonance in LaFeAsO(1-x)F(x). The antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation found above the magnetic ordering temperature T(N) = 58 K for x = 0.03 persists in the regime 0.04 ≤ x ≤ 0.08, where superconductivity sets in. A dome-shaped x dependence of the superconducting transition temperature T(c) is found, with the highest T(c) = 27 K at x = 0.06, which is realized under significant antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation. With increasing x further, the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation decreases, and so does T(c). These features resemble closely the cuprates La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4). In x = 0.06, the spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T(1)) below T(c) decreases exponentially down to 0.13T(c), which unambiguously indicates that the energy gaps are fully opened. The temperature variation of 1/T(1) below T(c) is rendered nonexponential for other x by impurity scattering.

Self-energy effects and electron-phonon coupling in Fe-As superconductors

Doping and temperature dependent studies of optical phonon modes in Fe-122 pnictides are performed using Raman scattering experiments and compared with model calculations to elucidate the role of electron-phonon and spin-phonon interaction in this family of compounds. The frequency and linewidth of the B(1g) mode at around 210 cm(-1) is highlighted as appreciable anomalies at the superconducting and spin density wave transitions are observed that strongly depend on composition. We give estimates of the electron-phonon coupling related to this renormalization and calculate the phonon self-energy on the basis of a four-band model comparing different symmetries of the order parameters. In addition, we observe a pronounced quasi-elastic Raman response for the undoped compound, suggesting persisting magnetic fluctuations in the spin density wave state.

Suppression of the critical temperature of superconducting NdFeAs(OF) single crystals by Kondo-like defect sites induced by alpha-particle irradiation

We report the effect of alpha-particle irradiation on the reduction of the critical temperature T{c} of a NdFeAs(OF) single crystal. Our data indicate that irradiation defects cause both nonmagnetic and magnetic scattering, resulting in the Kondo-like excess resistance Delta rho(T) proportional to lnT over 2 decades in temperatures above T{c}. The critical density of magnetic irradiation defects which suppresses T{c} is found to be much higher than those for cuprates and multiband BCS superconductors. We suggest that such anomalously weak pair breaking by irradiation defects indicates that magnetic scattering in pnictides is coupled with pairing interactions mediated by spin fluctuations.

Evidence for a nodal energy gap in the iron-pnictide superconductor LaFePO from penetration depth measurements by scanning SQUID susceptometry

We measure changes in the penetration depth lambda of the T_{c} approximately 6 K superconductor LaFePO. In the process, scanning SQUID susceptometry is demonstrated as a technique for accurately measuring local temperature-dependent changes in lambda, ideal for studying early or difficult-to-grow materials. lambda is found to vary linearly with temperatures from 0.36 to approximately 2 K, with a slope of 143 +/- 15 A/K, suggesting line nodes in the superconducting order parameter. The linear dependence up to approximately T_{c}/3, similar to the cuprate superconductors, indicates well-developed nodes.
