Direct measurement of the spatial-spectral structure of waveguided parametric down-conversion

Spatially single mode photon pair source at 800 nm in periodically poled Rubidium exchanged KTP waveguides

Photon pair sources in the visible to NIR wavelength region play a key role in quantum optics. The wavelength range around 800 nm provides an opportunity for using low cost detectors, which makes it highly interesting for practical, large scale quantum applications. Here, we report on the realization of single mode Rubidium (Rb) exchanged waveguides in periodically poled (PP) Potassium Titanyl Phosphate (Rb:KTiOPO₄ or Rb:KTP) for frequency-non-degenerate type II parametric down-conversion pumped at 400 nm and generating pairs of photons at around 800 nm. The source exhibits a nonlinear conversion efficiency of 2.0%/(Wcm²), estimated from SHG measurements. Characterisation of the generated two-photon state confirms nonclassical photon-number correlations, characterized by g^(1,1). The high nonlinear conversion efficiency and low temperature sensitivity make this source a promising candidate for operations in both classical and quantum integrated network applications.

Counter-propagating photon pair generation in a nonlinear waveguide

Counter-propagating parametric conversion processes in non-linear bulk crystals have been shown to feature unique properties for efficient narrowband frequency conversion. In quantum optics, the generation of photon pairs with a counter-propagating parametric down-conversion process (PDC) in a waveguide, where signal and idler photons propagate in opposite directions, offers unique material-independent engineering capabilities. However, realizing counter-propagating PDC necessitates quasi-phase-matching (QPM) with extremely short poling periods. Here, we report on the generation of counter-propagating single-photon pairs in a self-made periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide with a poling period on the same order of magnitude as the generated wavelength. The single photons of the biphoton state bridge GHz and THz bandwidths with a separable joint temporal-spectral behavior. Furthermore, they allow the direct observation of the temporal envelope of heralded single photons with state-of-the art photon counters.

Fiber-based photon-pair source capable of hybrid entanglement in frequency and transverse mode, controllably scalable to higher dimensions

We have designed and implemented a photon-pair source, based on the spontaneous four wave mixing (SFWM) process in a few-mode fiber, in a geometry which permits multiple, simultaneous SFWM processes, each associated with a distinct combination of transverse modes for the four participating waves. In our source: i) each process is group-velocity-matched so that it is, by design, nearly-factorable, and ii) the spectral separation between neighboring processes is greater than the marginal spectral width of each process. Consequently, there is a direct correspondence between the joint amplitude of each process and each of the Schmidt mode pairs of the overall two-photon state. Our approach permits hybrid entanglement in discrete frequency and in transverse mode, whereby control of the number of supported fiber transverse modes allows scalability to higher dimensions while spectral filtering may be used for straightforward Schmidt mode discrimination.

Mode-resolved Fabry-Perot experiment in low-loss Bragg-reflection waveguides

Based on the interaction between different spatial modes, semiconductor Bragg-reflection waveguides (BRWs) provide a highly functional platform for non-linear optics. For achieving any desired quantum optical functionality, we must control and engineer the properties of each spatial mode. To reach this purpose we extend the Fabry-Perot technique and achieve a detailed linear optical characterization of dispersive multimode semiconductor waveguides. With this efficient broadband spectral method we gain direct experimental access to the relevant modes of our BRWs and determine their group velocities. Furthermore, we show that our waveguides have lower than expected loss coefficients. This renders them suitable for integrated quantum optics applications.

Scheme for on-chip verification of transverse mode entanglement using the electro-optic effect

A key ingredient in emerging quantum-enhanced technologies is the ability to coherently manipulate and detect superpositions of basis states. In integrated optics implementations, transverse spatial modes supported by multimode structures offer an attractive carrier of quantum superpositions. Here we propose an integrated dynamic mode converter based on the electro-optic effect in nonlinear channel waveguides for deterministic transformations between mutually non-orthogonal bases of spatial modes. We theoretically show its capability to demonstrate a violation of a Bell-type Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality by measuring spatially mode-entangled photon pairs generated by an integrated photon pair source. The proposed configuration, numerically studied for the potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) material, can be easily implemented using standard integrated optical fabrication technology.

Configurable spatiotemporal properties in a photon-pair source based on spontaneous four-wave mixing with multiple transverse modes

We present an experimental and theoretical study of photon pairs generated by spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM), based on birefringent phasematching, in a fiber that supports more than one transverse mode. We present SFWM spectra, obtained through single-channel and coincidence photon counting, which exhibit multiple peaks shown here to be the result of multiple SFWM processes associated with different combinations of transverse modes for the pump, signal, and idler waves.

High-visibility nonclassical interference of photon pairs generated in a multimode nonlinear waveguide

We report measurements of two-photon interference using a cw-pumped type-II spontaneous parametric down-conversion source based on a multimode perodically poled potassium titanyl phosphate (PPKTP) waveguide. We have used the recently demonstrated technique of controlling the spatial characteristics of the down-conversion process via intermodal dispersion to generate photon pairs in fundamental transverse modes, thus ensuring their spatial indistinguishability. Good overlap of photon modes within the pairs has been verified using the Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer and the preparation of polarization entanglement in the Shih-Alley configuration, yielding visibilities consistently above 90%.

Compact representation of the spatial modes of a phase-sensitive image amplifier

We compute the eigenmodes of a spatially-broadband optical parametric amplifier with elliptical Gaussian pump and show that the well-amplified eigenmodes can be compactly represented by a low-dimensional subspace of the first few Laguerre- or Hermite-Gaussian (LG or HG, respectively) modes of an appropriate waist size. We also show that the first few eigenmodes are well matched to single LG or HG modes. For sufficiently large pump waists, the optimum waist size of the compact basis is in the vicinity of the geometric average of the pump waist size and the inverse spatial bandwidth of the nonlinear crystal in the parametric amplifier. The use of such compact representation can greatly simplify numerical computation of the spatial eigenmodes of the amplifier and thus lead to improving the experiments on traveling-wave image amplification and spatially-broadband vacuum squeezing.

On-chip low loss heralded source of pure single photons

A key obstacle to the experimental realization of many photonic quantum-enhanced technologies is the lack of low-loss sources of single photons in pure quantum states. We demonstrate a promising solution: generation of heralded single photons in a silica photonic chip by spontaneous four-wave mixing. A heralding efficiency of 40%, corresponding to a preparation efficiency of 80% accounting for detector performance, is achieved due to efficient coupling of the low-loss source to optical fibers. A single photon purity of 0.86 is measured from the source number statistics without narrow spectral filtering, and confirmed by direct measurement of the joint spectral intensity. We calculate that similar high-heralded-purity output can be obtained from visible to telecom spectral regions using this approach. On-chip silica sources can have immediate application in a wide range of single-photon quantum optics applications which employ silica photonics.

Dispersion-based control of modal characteristics for parametric down-conversion in a multimode waveguide

We report generation of near-infrared photon pairs in fundamental spatial modes via type-II spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a periodically poled potassium titanyl phosphate (KTiOPO(4)) nonlinear waveguide supporting multiple transverse modes. This demonstrates experimentally a versatile scheme for controlling the spatial characteristics of the produced nonclassical light based on exploitation of intermodal dispersion. The down-converted photons are characterized by the measurement of the beam quality factors in the heralded regime.
