Analytic Approach to Light Dark Matter Propagation

If dark matter interacts too strongly with nuclei, it could be slowed to undetectable speeds in Earth's crust or atmosphere before reaching a detector. For sub-GeV dark matter, approximations appropriate for heavier dark matter fail, necessitating the use of computationally expensive simulations. We present a new, analytic approximation for modeling attenuation of light dark matter in Earth. We show that our approach agrees well with Monte Carlo results, and can be much faster at large cross sections. We use this method to reanalyze constraints on subdominant dark matter.

New Solar Metallicity Measurements

In the past years, a systematic downward revision of the metallicity of the Sun has led to the “solar modeling problem”, namely the disagreement between predictions of standard solar models and inferences from helioseismology. Recent solar wind measurements of the metallicity of the Sun, however, provide once more an indication of a high-metallicity Sun. Because of the effects of possible residual fractionation, the derived value of the metallicity Z ⊙ = 0 . 0196 ± 0 . 0014 actually represents a lower limit to the true metallicity of the Sun. However, when compared with helioseismological measurements, solar models computed using these new abundances fail to restore agreement, owing to the implausibly high abundance of refractory (Mg, Si, S, Fe) elements, which correlates with a higher core temperature and hence an overproduction of solar neutrinos. Moreover, the robustness of these measurements is challenged by possible first ionization potential fractionation processes. I will discuss these solar wind measurements, which leave the “solar modeling problem” unsolved.

Dark Matter Ignition of Type Ia Supernovae

Recent studies of low redshift type Ia supernovae (SN Ia) indicate that half explode from less than Chandrasekhar mass white dwarfs, implying ignition must proceed from something besides the canonical criticality of Chandrasekhar mass SN Ia progenitors. We show that 1-100 PeV mass asymmetric dark matter, with imminently detectable nucleon scattering interactions, can accumulate to the point of self-gravitation in a white dwarf and collapse, shedding gravitational potential energy by scattering off nuclei, thereby heating the white dwarf and igniting the flame front that precedes SN Ia. We combine data on SN Ia masses with data on the ages of SN Ia-adjacent stars. This combination reveals a 2.8σ inverse correlation between SN Ia masses and ignition ages, which could result from increased capture of dark matter in 1.4 vs 1.1 solar mass white dwarfs. Future studies of SN Ia in galactic centers will provide additional tests of dark-matter-induced type Ia ignition. Remarkably, both bosonic and fermionic SN Ia-igniting dark matter also resolve the missing pulsar problem by forming black holes in ≳10  Myr old pulsars at the center of the Milky Way.

Possible indication of momentum-dependent asymmetric dark matter in the sun

Broad disagreement persists between helioseismological observables and predictions of solar models computed with the latest surface abundances. Here we show that most of these problems can be solved by the presence of asymmetric dark matter coupling to nucleons as the square of the momentum q exchanged in the collision. We compute neutrino fluxes, small frequency separations, surface helium abundances, sound speed profiles, and convective zone depths for a number of models, showing more than a 6σ preference for q^{2} models over others, and over the standard solar model. The preferred mass (3 GeV) and reference dark matter-nucleon cross section (10^{-37}  cm^{2} at q_{0}=40  MeV) are within the region of parameter space allowed by both direct detection and collider searches.

Main sequence stars with asymmetric dark matter

We study the effects of feebly or nonannihilating weakly interacting dark matter (DM) particles on stars that live in DM environments denser than that of our Sun. We find that the energy transport mechanism induced by DM particles can produce unusual conditions in the cores of main sequence stars, with effects which can potentially be used to probe DM properties. We find that solar mass stars placed in DM densities of ρ(χ)≥10(2) GeV/cm(3) are sensitive to spin-dependent scattering cross section σ(SD)≥10(-37) cm(2) and a DM particle mass as low as m(χ)=5 GeV, accessing a parameter range weakly constrained by current direct detection experiments.
