Ferromagnetically coupled Shastry-Sutherland quantum spin singlets in (CuCl)LaNb₂O₇

KMB4O6F3 (M = Co, Fe): two-dimensional magnetic fluorooxoborates with triangular lattices directed by triangular BO3 units

Frustrated magnetic systems are of great interest owing to their spin liquid state for application in quantum computing. However, experimentally, spin liquid has not been realized. Thus, experimental explorations of frustrated magnetic systems including triangular lattices are still urgent, particularly for directed synthesis compared to random exploration. Herein, for the first time, directed by the use of a triangular unit of the BO3 anion group, two novel layered magnetic fluorooxoborates KMB4O6F3 (M = Co 1, Fe 2) with triangular lattices have been hydrothermally synthesized and characterized. Compounds 1 and 2 are isostructural and crystallize in the P21/c space group with layered magnetic triangular lattices, which are further separated by K+ ions. Magnetic susceptibility curves of both 1 and 2 show no λ-anomaly peak down to a low temperature of 2 K in the absence of a magnetic long-range ordering transition, which are further confirmed by the heat capacity results. The magnetic-field dependence of magnetization at 2 K shows saturation of 2.20μB for 1 and 4.24μB for 2, respectively, at 7 T, after roughly subtracting the Van Vleck paramagnetic contribution. Further in-depth investigation of the underlying physics at a lower temperature below 2 K would be subsequently performed. Moreover, thermal stability and FT-IR and UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy with optical bandgap properties are also reported. Most importantly, our work provides a promising method to experimentally realize specific magnetic lattices (e.g. triangular lattices) directed by the use of triangular groups (e.g. BO3) as the functional unit.

Spin Exchanges Between Transition Metal Ions Governed by the Ligand p-Orbitals in Their Magnetic Orbitals

In this review on spin exchanges, written to provide guidelines useful for finding the spin lattice relevant for any given magnetic solid, we discuss how the values of spin exchanges in transition metal magnetic compounds are quantitatively determined from electronic structure calculations, which electronic factors control whether a spin exchange is antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic, and how these factors are related to the geometrical parameters of the spin exchange path. In an extended solid containing transition metal magnetic ions, each metal ion M is surrounded with main-group ligands L to form an MLn polyhedron (typically, n = 3-6), and the unpaired spins of M are represented by the singly-occupied d-states (i.e., the magnetic orbitals) of MLn. Each magnetic orbital has the metal d-orbital combined out-of-phase with the ligand p-orbitals; therefore, the spin exchanges between adjacent metal ions M lead not only to the M-L-M-type exchanges, but also to the M-L…L-M-type exchanges in which the two metal ions do not share a common ligand. The latter can be further modified by d0 cations A such as V5+ and W6+ to bridge the L…L contact generating M-L…A…L-M-type exchanges. We describe several qualitative rules for predicting whether the M-L…L-M and M-L…A…L-M-type exchanges are antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic by analyzing how the ligand p-orbitals in their magnetic orbitals (the ligand p-orbital tails, for short) are arranged in the exchange paths. Finally, we illustrate how these rules work by analyzing the crystal structures and magnetic properties of four cuprates of current interest: -CuV2O6, LiCuVO4, (CuCl)LaNb2O7, and Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2.

Exploration of new superconductors and functional materials, and fabrication of superconducting tapes and wires of iron pnictides

This review shows the highlights of a 4-year-long research project supported by the Japanese Government to explore new superconducting materials and relevant functional materials. The project found several tens of new superconductors by examining ∼1000 materials, each of which was chosen by Japanese experts with a background in solid state chemistry. This review summarizes the major achievements of the project in newly found superconducting materials, and the fabrication wires and tapes of iron-based superconductors; it incorporates a list of ∼700 unsuccessful materials examined for superconductivity in the project. In addition, described are new functional materials and functionalities discovered during the project.

Magnetic properties and energy-mapping analysis

The magnetic energy levels of a given magnetic solid are closely packed in energy because the interactions between magnetic ions are weak. Thus, in describing its magnetic properties, one needs to generate its magnetic energy spectrum by employing an appropriate spin Hamiltonian. In this review article we discuss how to determine and specify a necessary spin Hamiltonian in terms of first principles electronic structure calculations on the basis of energy-mapping analysis and briefly survey important concepts and phenomena that one encounters in reading the current literature on magnetic solids. Our discussion is given on a qualitative level from the perspective of magnetic energy levels and electronic structures. The spin Hamiltonian appropriate for a magnetic system should be based on its spin lattice, i.e., the repeat pattern of its strong magnetic bonds (strong spin exchange paths), which requires one to evaluate its Heisenberg spin exchanges on the basis of energy-mapping analysis. Other weaker energy terms such as Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) spin exchange and magnetocrystalline anisotropy energies, which a spin Hamiltonian must include in certain cases, can also be evaluated by performing energy-mapping analysis. We show that the spin orientation of a transition-metal magnetic ion can be easily explained by considering its split d-block levels as unperturbed states with the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) as perturbation, that the DM exchange between adjacent spin sites can become comparable in strength to the Heisenberg spin exchange when the two spin sites are not chemically equivalent, and that the DM interaction between rare-earth and transition-metal cations is governed largely by the magnetic orbitals of the rare-earth cation.

First single-crystal synthesis and low-temperature structural determination of the quasi-2D quantum spin compound (CuCl)LaNb2O7

We provide a full description of the first single-crystal synthesis of the low-dimensional quantum spin compound (CuCl)LaNb(2)O(7) through the low-temperature topotactic ion exchange route. Very fast diffusion of ion-exchanged CuCl and Cs ions is observed. In addition, thorough structure determination at very low temperature is outlined following use of single-crystal X-ray diffraction and powder neutron diffraction, taking advantage of the better sensitivity of the latter method for describing O and Cl atoms. State-of-the-art calculations (Maximum Entropy Method) are used for visualising the fine structural features of this unusual pseudo-tetragonal superstructure. Our study unambiguously throws light on the long-standing controversy concerning the crystal structure of this compound, and allows for a relevant description of its magnetic properties. Incidentally, it is demonstrated that the low-temperature structural model tentatively proposed very recently by Tsirlin et al. (Phys. Rev. B, 2010, 82, 054107), according to powder synchrotron X-ray diffraction, is correct.
