Polarized ³He as a probe for short-range spin-dependent interactions

Constraints on Spin-Spin Velocity-Dependent Interactions

The existence of exotic spin-dependent forces may shine light on new physics beyond the standard model. We utilize two iron shielded SmCo_{5} electron-spin sources and two optically pumped magnetometers to search for exotic long-range spin-spin velocity-dependent force. The orientations of spin sources and magnetometers are optimized such that the exotic force is enhanced and common-mode noise is effectively subtracted. We set direct limit on proton-electron interaction in the force range from 1 cm to 1 km. Our experiment represents more than 10 orders of magnitude improvement than previous works.

Search for Monopole-Dipole Interactions at the Submillimeter Range with a ^{129}Xe-^{131}Xe-Rb Comagnetometer

Monopole-dipole interactions involving scalar couplings between a spin and a massive particle violate both P and T symmetry, and can be mediated by axions. We use a ^{129}Xe-^{131}Xe-Rb atomic cell comagnetometer to measure the ratio of precession frequencies between the two xenon isotopes, and search for changes of the ratio correlated with the distance between the atomic cell and a nonmagnetic bismuth germanate crystal. A modulated Rb polarization scheme is used to suppress systematic effects by 2 orders of magnitude. The null results of this search improve the upper limit on the coupling strength g_{s}^{N}g_{p}^{n} over the interaction range 0.11-0.55 mm, and by a maximum improvement factor of 30 at 0.24 mm. The corresponding propagator mass range of this new excluded region covers 0.36-1.80 meV.

Bose-Einstein Condensate Comagnetometer

We describe a comagnetometer employing the f=1 and f=2 ground state hyperfine manifolds of a ^{87}Rb spinor Bose-Einstein condensate as colocated magnetometers. The hyperfine manifolds feature nearly opposite gyromagnetic ratios and thus the sum of their precession angles is only weakly coupled to external magnetic fields, while being highly sensitive to any effect that rotates both manifolds in the same way. The f=1 and f=2 transverse magnetizations and azimuth angles are independently measured by nondestructive Faraday rotation probing, and we demonstrate a 44.0(8) dB common-mode rejection in good agreement with theory. We show how the magnetometer coherence time can be extended to ∼1  s, by using spin-dependent interactions to inhibit hyperfine relaxing collisions between f=2 atoms. The technique could be used in high sensitivity searches for new physics on submillimeter length scales, precision studies of ultracold collision physics, and angle-resolved studies of quantum spin dynamics.

Proof of principle for Ramsey-type gravity resonance spectroscopy with qBounce

Ultracold neutrons (UCNs) are formidable probes in precision tests of gravity. With their negligible electric charge, dielectric moment, and polarizability they naturally evade some of the problems plaguing gravity experiments with atomic or macroscopic test bodies. Taking advantage of this fact, the qBounce collaboration has developed a technique – gravity resonance spectroscopy (GRS) – to study bound quantum states of UCN in the gravity field of the Earth. This technique is used as a high-precision tool to search for hypothetical Non-Newtonian gravity on the micrometer scale. In the present article, we describe the recently commissioned Ramsey-type GRS setup, give an unambiguous proof of principle, and discuss possible measurements that will be performed.

"Radiation Damping" in gas spin comagnetometers

We report a new kind of interaction between overlapping Rb-Xe spin ensembles polarized by spin-exchange optical pumping. The Rb acts as both a medium to optically polarize the Xe spins and as a magnetometer to probe the precession of Xe spins. When Xe spins precess, they result in the precession of Rb spins. Like the radiation damping effect caused by the coil in conventional NMR systems, the precessing Rb spins lead to damping and a frequency-shift for the precessing Xe spins. When Xe spins are operated in a free-induction decay mode, the transverse relaxation time and oscillating frequency of Xe spins change due to the "radiation damping" effect of Rb spins. When Xe spins are operated in the self-oscillating mode, its transverse relaxation time and oscillating frequency will also be changed. These effects will influence the accuracy of NMR probes, which are widely used in the search for CPT- and Lorentz-invariance violations, the fifth force, etc. If this problem is solved or compensated for, the limit of the aforementioned search may be improved.

Study of neutron fundamental properties in the perfect crystal optics and diffraction

Review of the new crystal-diffraction methods to study fundamental neutron properties and interactions is presented. Features of neutron optics in the crystal without a center of symmetry is discussed as well as the first experimental results and perspectives to improve the sensitivity of experiments on a search for the neutron electric dipole moment (EDM) and CP-violating short-range pseudomagnetic nucleon-nucleon interaction. Also, the possibility to develop ultra-precise neutron spectroscopy using Laue diffraction in the perfect crystal is discussed, which can be used for a broad range of experiments: search for the neutron electric charge; test of the equivalence principle; precise measurements of neutron scattering amplitudes; crystal quality testing.

New Experimental Limits on Exotic Spin-Spin-Velocity-Dependent Interactions by Using SmCo_{5} Spin Sources

Despite the great success of the standard model (SM), there still exist mysteries like the nature of dark matter, the strong CP problems, etc. To solve them, many theories proposed new bosons beyond the SM that can mediate new forces. Here, we report the latest results of searching for possible new long-range spin-spin-velocity-dependent forces (SSVDFs), based on specially designed iron-shielded SmCo_{5} spin sources and a spin exchange relaxation free comagnetometer. With help from the similarity analysis method, new constraints on some forms of SSVDFs between electrons have been obtained, which represent up to more than 11 orders of magnitude tighter limits than previous experiments for the force range of 5 cm-1 km.

Searching for an exotic spin-dependent interaction with a single electron-spin quantum sensor

Searching for new particles beyond the standard model is crucial for understanding several fundamental conundrums in physics and astrophysics. Several hypothetical particles can mediate exotic spin-dependent interactions between ordinary fermions, which enable laboratory searches via the detection of the interactions. Most laboratory searches utilize a macroscopic source and detector, thus allowing the detection of interactions with submillimeter force range and above. It remains a challenge to detect the interactions at shorter force ranges. Here we propose and demonstrate that a near-surface nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond can be utilized as a quantum sensor to detect the monopole-dipole interaction between an electron spin and nucleons. Our result sets a constraint for the electron-nucleon coupling, [Formula: see text], with the force range 0.1-23 μm. The obtained upper bound of the coupling at 20 μm is [Formula: see text] < 6.24 × 10-15.

Improved Limits on Axionlike-Particle-Mediated P, T-Violating Interactions between Electrons and Nucleons from Electric Dipole Moments of Atoms and Molecules

In the presence of P, T-violating interactions, the exchange of axionlike particles between electrons and nucleons in atoms and molecules induces electric dipole moments (EDMs) of atoms and molecules. We perform calculations of such axion-exchange-induced atomic EDMs using the relativistic Hartree-Fock-Dirac method including electron core polarization corrections. We present analytical estimates to explain the dependence of these induced atomic EDMs on the axion mass and atomic parameters. From the experimental bounds on the EDMs of atoms and molecules, including ^{133}Cs, ^{205}Tl, ^{129}Xe, ^{199}Hg, ^{171}Yb^{19}F, ^{180}Hf^{19}F^{+}, and ^{232}Th^{16}O, we constrain the P, T-violating scalar-pseudoscalar nucleon-electron and electron-electron interactions mediated by a generic axionlike particle of arbitrary mass. Our limits improve on existing laboratory bounds from other experiments by many orders of magnitude for m_{a}≳10^{-2}  eV. We also place constraints on CP violation in certain types of relaxion models.

Optically polarized 3He

This article reviews the physics and technology of producing large quantities of highly spin-polarized 3He nuclei using spin-exchange (SEOP) and metastability-exchange (MEOP) optical pumping. Both technical developments and deeper understanding of the physical processes involved have led to substantial improvements in the capabilities of both methods. For SEOP, the use of spectrally narrowed lasers and K-Rb mixtures has substantially increased the achievable polarization and polarizing rate. For MEOP nearly lossless compression allows for rapid production of polarized 3He and operation in high magnetic fields has likewise significantly increased the pressure at which this method can be performed, and revealed new phenomena. Both methods have benefitted from development of storage methods that allow for spin-relaxation times of hundreds of hours, and specialized precision methods for polarimetry. SEOP and MEOP are now widely applied for spin-polarized targets, neutron spin filters, magnetic resonance imaging, and precision measurements.

Comparison of operation modes for spin-exchange optically-pumped spin oscillators

The nuclear spin precesses continually when a positive feedback nuclear magnetic resonance field is applied. The characteristics of this behaviour depend not only on the parameters of the spin ensemble but also on the type and parameters of the feedback loop. We theoretically analysed two types of feedback loops which use direct feedback and phase-lock feedback, respectively. We also compared the oscillating frequency of the spin oscillators using rotating and linear magnetic fields, respectively. Some interesting results on the frequency and start-time of the oscillator were found. These findings will be useful to improve the accuracy of fundamental physical theory tests, such as the Lorentz-violation and electron dipole moment (EDM) test, using spin oscillators. And moreover, they are also very useful for achieving a high performance NMR gyroscope.

Transverse spin relaxation and diffusion-constant measurements of spin-polarized 129Xe nuclei in the presence of a magnetic field gradient

The presence of a magnetic field gradient in a sample cell containing spin-polarized (129)Xe atoms will cause an increased relaxation rate. We measured the transverse spin relaxation time of (129)Xe verse the applied magnetic field gradient and the cell temperature. We then compared the different transverse spin relaxation behavior of dual isotopes of xenon ((129)Xe and (131)Xe) due to magnetic field gradient in the same cell. The experiment results show the residual magnetic field gradient can be measured and compensated by applying a negative magnetic gradient in the sample cell. The transverse spin relaxation time of (129)Xe could be increased 2-7 times longer when applying an appropriate magnetic field gradient. The experiment results can also be used to determine the diffusion constant of (129)Xe in H2 and N2 to be 0.4 ± 0.26 cm(2)/sec and 0.12 ± 0.02 cm(2)/sec. The results are close with theoretical calculation.

Searching for New Spin- and Velocity-Dependent Interactions by Spin Relaxation of Polarized ^{3}He Gas

We have constrained possible new interactions which produce nonrelativistic potentials between polarized neutrons and unpolarized matter proportional to ασ[over →]·v[over →] where σ[over →] is the neutron spin and v[over →] is the relative velocity. We use existing data from laboratory measurements on the very long T_{1} and T_{2} spin relaxation times of polarized ^{3}He gas in glass cells. Using the best available measured T_{2} of polarized ^{3}He gas atoms as the polarized source and the Earth as an unpolarized source, we obtain constraints on two new interactions. We present a new experimental upper bound on possible vector-axial-vector (V_{VA}) type interactions for ranges between 1 and 10^{8} m. In combination with previous results, we set the most stringent experiment limits on g_{V}g_{A} ranging from ~μm to ~10^{8} m. We also report what is to our knowledge the first experimental upper limit on the possible torsion fields induced by the Earth on its surface. Dedicated experiments could further improve these bounds by a factor of ~100. Our method of analysis also makes it possible to probe many velocity dependent interactions which depend on the spins of both neutrons and other particles which have never been searched for before experimentally.

New classes of systematic effects in gas spin comagnetometers

Atomic comagnetometers are widely used in precision measurements searching for spin interactions beyond the standard model. We describe a new (3)He-(129)Xe comagnetometer probed by Rb atoms and use it to identify two general classes of systematic effects in gas comagnetometers, one associated with diffusion in second-order magnetic-field gradients and another due to temperature gradients. We also develop and confirm experimentally a general and practical approach for calculating spin relaxation and frequency shifts due to arbitrary magnetic-field gradients.

Constraints on spin-dependent short-range interaction between nucleons

We search for a spin-dependent P- and T-violating nucleon-nucleon interaction mediated by light pseudoscalar bosons such as axions or axionlike particles. We employ an ultrasensitive low-field magnetometer based on the detection of free precession of colocated 3He and 129Xe nuclear spins using SQUIDs as low-noise magnetic flux detectors. The precession frequency shift in the presence of an unpolarized mass was measured to determine the coupling of pseudoscalar particles to the spin of the bound neutron. For boson masses between 2 and 500  μeV (force ranges between 3×1(-4)  m and 10(-1)  m) we improved the laboratory upper bounds by up to 4 orders of magnitude.

Laboratory search for a long-range T-odd, P-odd interaction from axionlike particles using dual-species nuclear magnetic resonance with polarized 129Xe and 131Xe gas

Various theories beyond the standard model predict new particles with masses in the sub-eV range with very weak couplings to ordinary matter. A new P-odd and T-odd interaction between polarized and unpolarized nucleons proportional to K·r is one such possibility, where r is the distance between the nucleons and K is the spin of the polarized nucleon. Such an interaction involving a scalar coupling gs at one vertex and a pseudoscalar coupling gp at the polarized nucleon vertex can be induced by the exchange of spin-0 bosons. We used the NMR cell test station at Northrop Grumman Corporation to search for NMR frequency shifts in polarized 129Xe and 131Xe when a nonmagnetic zirconia rod is moved near the NMR cell. Long (T2∼20  s) spin-relaxation times allow precision measurements of the NMR frequency ratios, which are insensitive to magnetic field fluctuations. Combined with existing theoretical calculations of the neutron spin contribution to the nuclear angular momentum in xenon nuclei, the measurements improve the laboratory upper bound on the product gsgp(n) by 2 orders of magnitude for distances near 1 mm. The sensitivity of this technique can be increased by at least two more orders of magnitude.

Size independence of statistics for boundary collisions of random walks and its implications for spin-polarized gases

A bounded random walk exhibits strong correlations between collisions with a boundary. For a one-dimensional walk, we obtain the full statistical distribution of the number of such collisions in a time t. In the large t limit, the fluctuations in the number of collisions are found to be size independent (independent of the distance between boundaries). This occurs for any interboundary distance, from less to greater than the mean free path, and means that this boundary effect does not decay with increasing system size. As an application, we consider spin-polarized gases, such as 3-helium, in the three-dimensional diffusive regime. The above results mean that the depolarizing effect of rare magnetic impurities in the container walls is orders of magnitude larger than a Smoluchowski assumption (to neglect correlations) would imply. This could explain why depolarization is so sensitive to the container's treatment with magnetic fields prior to its use.

Limits on the axial coupling constant of new light bosons

We report on a neutron particle physics experiment, which provides for the first time an upper limit on the strength of an axial coupling constant for a new light spin 1 boson in the millimeter range. Such a new boson would mediate a new force between ordinary fermions, like neutrons and protons. The experiment was set up at the cold neutron reflectometer Narziss at the Paul Scherrer Institute and uses Ramsey's technique of separated oscillating fields to search for a pseudomagnetic neutron spin precession induced by this new interaction. For the axial coupling constant g(A)(2), an upper limit of 6×10(-13) (95% C.L.) was determined for an interaction range of 1 mm.

Temperature can enhance coherent oscillations at a Landau-Zener transition

We consider sweeping a system through a Landau-Zener avoided crossing, when that system is also coupled to an environment or noise. Unsurprisingly, we find that decoherence suppresses the coherent oscillations of quantum superpositions of system states, as superpositions decohere into mixed states. However, we also find an effect we call "Lamb-assisted coherent oscillations," in which a Lamb shift exponentially enhances the coherent-oscillation amplitude. This dominates for high-frequency environments such as super-Ohmic environments, where the coherent oscillations can grow exponentially as either the environment coupling or temperature are increased. The effect could be used as an experimental probe for high-frequency environments in such systems as molecular magnets, solid-state qubits, spin-polarized gases (neutrons or He3), or Bose condensates.

Anisotropic hyperfine interactions limit the efficiency of spin-exchange optical pumping of ³He nuclei

We use accurate ab initio and quantum scattering calculations to demonstrate that the maximum ³He spin polarization that can be achieved in spin-exchange collisions with potassium (³⁹K) and silver (¹⁰⁷Ag) atoms is limited by the anisotropic hyperfine interaction. We find that spin exchange in Ag-He collisions occurs much faster than in K-He collisions over a wide range of temperatures (10-600 K). Our analysis indicates that measurements of trap loss rates of ²S atoms in the presence of cold ³He gas may be used to probe anisotropic spin-dependent interactions in atom-He collisions.

Spin relaxation and linear-in-electric-field frequency shift in an arbitrary, time-independent magnetic field

A method is presented to calculate the spin relaxation times T(1), T(2) due to a non-uniform magnetic field, and the linear-in-electric-field precession frequency shift δω(E) when an electric field is present, in the diffusion approximation for spins confined to a rectangular cell. It is found that the rectangular cell geometry admits of a general result for T(1), T(2), and δω(E) in terms of the spatial cosine-transform components of the magnetic field. The result is applied to the case of a permanently-magnetized dipole impurity near the cell.

Improved constraints on an axion-mediated force

Low mass pseudoscalars, such as the axion, can mediate macroscopic parity and time-reversal symmetry-violating forces. We searched for such a force between polarized electrons and unpolarized atoms using a novel, magnetically unshielded torsion pendulum. We improved the laboratory bounds on this force by more than 10 orders of magnitude for pseudoscalars heavier than 1 meV and have constrained this force over a broad range of astrophysically interesting masses (10  μeV to 10 meV).
