Domain coalescence-induced nucleation and anomalous growth of holes in thin polymer blend film

Nanoparticle Induced Morphology Modulation in Spin Coated PS/PMMA Blend Thin Films

The influence of adding nanoparticles on the ascast morphology of spin coated immiscible polystyrene/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS/PMMA) thin films of different thickness (h_E) and composition (R_B, volume ratio of PS to PMMA) has been explored in this article. To understand the precise effect of nanoparticle addition, the morphology of PS/PMMA thin blend films spin cast from toluene on a native oxide covered silicon wafer substrate was first investigated. It is seen that in particle free films, the generic morphology of the films remains nearly unaltered with increase in h_E, for R_B = 3:1 and 1:3. In contrast, strong h_E dependent morphology transformation is observed in films with R_B = 1:1. Subsequently, thiol-capped gold nanoparticles (AuNP) containing films with different particle concentrations (C_NP) were cast from the same solvent along with the polymer mixture. We observe that addition of AuNPs barely alters the generic morphology of the films with R_B = 3:1. In contrast, the presence of the particles significantly influences the morphology of the films with R_B = 1:1 and 1:3, particularly at higher C_NP (≈10.0%). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray reflectivity of some samples reveal that the AuNPs tend to migrate to the free surface through the PS phase, thereby stabilizing this layer partially or fully (depending on C_NP) against dewetting over a surface of adsorbed PMMA layer and influencing the ascast morphology as a function of C_NP. The work is fundamentally important in understanding largely overlooked implications of nanoparticle addition on the morphology of PS/PMMA blend thin films which forms the fundamental basis for future interesting studies involving dynamics of nanoparticles within the blend thin films.

In Situ Atomic-Scale Study of Particle-Mediated Nucleation and Growth in Amorphous Bismuth to Nanocrystal Phase Transformation

Understanding classical and nonclassical mechanisms of crystal nucleation and growth at the atomic scale is of great interest to scientists in many disciplines. However, fulfilling direct atomic-scale observation still poses a significant challenge. Here, by taking a thin amorphous bismuth (Bi) metal nanosheet as a model system, direct atomic resolution of the crystal nucleation and growth initiated from an amorphous state of Bi metal under electron beam inside an aberration-corrected transmission electron microscope is provided. It is shown that the crystal nucleation and growth in the phase transformation of Bi metal from amorphous to crystalline structure takes place via the particle-mediated nonclassical mechanism instead of the classical atom-mediated mechanism. The dimension of the smaller particles in two contacted nanoparticles and their mutual orientation relationship are critical to governing several coalescence pathways: total rearrangement pathway, grain boundary migration-dominated pathway, and surface migration-dominated pathway. Sequential strain analyses imply that migration of the grain boundary is driven by the strain difference in two Bi nanocrystals and the coalescence of nanocrystals is a defect reduction process. The findings may provide useful information to clarify the nanocrystal growth mechanisms of other materials on the atomic scale.

Unconventional multiple ring structure formation from evaporation-induced self-assembly of polymers

The formation of multiring deposits of poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P2VP) from the evaporation of a P2VP-(2,6-lutidine + water) drop on a glass substrate does not conform to the conventional pinning-depinning mechanism. Instead, ringlike deposits are formed when the droplet undergoes several cycles of spreading and receding where, for each spreading event, a P2VP ridge is formed at the contact line when the polymer flows toward the outward advancing edge. The complex interplay between an outward solutal-Marangoni flow due to a higher concentration of the polymer at the contact line and an inward solvent-Marangoni flow arising from the differences in volatilities and surface tensions of the pure solvent components plays an important role in enhancing the droplet spreading rate. The newly discovered surface patterning mechanism has important implications in the development of novel techniques for inducing self-assembly of functional materials from evaporating drops.
