Inhomogenous electronic structure, transport gap, and percolation threshold in disordered bilayer graphene

Local, global, and nonlinear screening in twisted double-layer graphene

One-atom-thick crystalline layers and their vertical heterostructures carry the promise of designer electronic materials that are unattainable by standard growth techniques. To realize their potential it is necessary to isolate them from environmental disturbances, in particular those introduced by the substrate. However, finding and characterizing suitable substrates, and minimizing the random potential fluctuations they introduce, has been a persistent challenge in this emerging field. Here we show that Landau-level (LL) spectroscopy offers the unique capability to quantify both the reduction of the quasiparticles' lifetime and the long-range inhomogeneity due to random potential fluctuations. Harnessing this technique together with direct scanning tunneling microscopy and numerical simulations we demonstrate that the insertion of a graphene buffer layer with a large twist angle is a very effective method to shield a 2D system from substrate interference that has the additional desirable property of preserving the electronic structure of the system under study. We further show that owing to its remarkable nonlinear screening capability a single graphene buffer layer provides better shielding than either increasing the distance to the substrate or doubling the carrier density and reduces the amplitude of the potential fluctuations in graphene to values even lower than the ones in AB-stacked bilayer graphene.

Conductance fluctuations in graphene in the presence of long-range disorder

The fluctuations in the conductance of graphene that arise from a long-range disorder potential induced by random impurities are investigated with an atomic tight-binding lattice. The screened impurities lead to a slow variation of the background potential and this varies the overall potential landscape as the Fermi energy or an applied magnetic field is varied. As a result, the phase interference varies randomly and leads to fluctuations in the conductance. Recently, experiments have shown that an applied magnetic field produces a remarkable reduction in the amplitude of these conductance fluctuations. We find qualitative agreement with these experiments, and it appears that the reduction in magnetic field of the fluctuations arises from a field induced smoothing of the conductance landscape.

Continuous and reversible tuning of the disorder-driven superconductor-insulator transition in bilayer graphene

The influence of static disorder on a quantum phase transition (QPT) is a fundamental issue in condensed matter physics. As a prototypical example of a disorder-tuned QPT, the superconductor–insulator transition (SIT) has been investigated intensively over the past three decades, but as yet without a general consensus on its nature. A key element is good control of disorder. Here, we present an experimental study of the SIT based on precise in-situ tuning of disorder in dual-gated bilayer graphene proximity-coupled to two superconducting electrodes through electrical and reversible control of the band gap and the charge carrier density. In the presence of a static disorder potential, Andreev-paired carriers formed close to the Fermi level in bilayer graphene constitute a randomly distributed network of proximity-induced superconducting puddles. The landscape of the network was easily tuned by electrical gating to induce percolative clusters at the onset of superconductivity. This is evidenced by scaling behavior consistent with the classical percolation in transport measurements. At lower temperatures, the solely electrical tuning of the disorder-induced landscape enables us to observe, for the first time, a crossover from classical to quantum percolation in a single device, which elucidates how thermal dephasing engages in separating the two regimes.

Robust magnetic domains in fluorinated ReS2 monolayer

The robust metallic mid-gap states in localized domains of fluorinated ReS₂ monolayer could be useful in spintronic devices, such as spin-transfer torque and spin-wave logic devices.

Control over band structure and tunneling in bilayer graphene induced by velocity engineering

The band structure and transport properties of massive Dirac fermions in bilayer graphene with velocity modulation in space are investigated in the presence of a previously created band gap. It is pointed out that velocity engineering may be considered as a factor to control the band gap of symmetry-broken bilayer graphene. The band gap is direct and independent of velocity value if the velocity modulated in two layers is set up equally. Otherwise, in the case of interlayer asymmetric velocity, not only is the band gap indirect, but also the electron-hole symmetry fails. This band gap is controllable by the ratio of the velocity modulated in the upper layer to the velocity modulated in the lower layer. In more detail, the shift of momentum from the conduction band edge to the valence band edge can be engineered by the gate bias and velocity ratio. A transfer matrix method is also elaborated to calculate the four-band coherent conductance through a velocity barrier possibly subjected to a gate bias. Electronic transport depends on the ratio of velocity modulated inside the barrier to that for surrounding regions. As a result, a quantum version of total internal reflection is observed for thick enough velocity barriers. Moreover, a transport gap originating from the applied gate bias is engineered by modulating the velocities of the carriers in the upper and lower layers.

Conductance fluctuations in semiconductor nanostructures

Conductance fluctuations have been seen in semiconductors and graphene for quite some time. It has generally been believed that a universality existed in which the conductance variance was the same for variations in energy and magnetic field, although some experiments have questioned this view. Here, we use numerical simulations to show that fluctuations in magneto-conductance are typically smaller than those in energy by as much as a factor of 3. Moreover, the amplitude of the fluctuations in each case varies with the strength of the random potential.

The electronic properties of bilayer graphene

We review the electronic properties of bilayer graphene, beginning with a description of the tight-binding model of bilayer graphene and the derivation of the effective Hamiltonian describing massive chiral quasiparticles in two parabolic bands at low energies. We take into account five tight-binding parameters of the Slonczewski-Weiss-McClure model of bulk graphite plus intra- and interlayer asymmetry between atomic sites which induce band gaps in the low-energy spectrum. The Hartree model of screening and band-gap opening due to interlayer asymmetry in the presence of external gates is presented. The tight-binding model is used to describe optical and transport properties including the integer quantum Hall effect, and we also discuss orbital magnetism, phonons and the influence of strain on electronic properties. We conclude with an overview of electronic interaction effects.

A disorder induced field effect transistor in bilayer and trilayer graphene

We propose using disorder to produce a field effect transistor (FET) in biased bilayer and trilayer graphene. Modulation of the bias voltage can produce large variations in the conductance when the effects of disorder are confined to only one of the graphene layers. This effect is based on the ability of the bias voltage to select which of the graphene layers carries current, and is not tied to the presence of a gap in the density of states. In particular, we demonstrate this effect in models of gapless ABA-stacked trilayer graphene, gapped ABC-stacked trilayer graphene and gapped bilayer graphene.

Transport studies of dual-gated ABC and ABA trilayer graphene: band gap opening and band structure tuning in very large perpendicular electric fields

We report on the transport properties of ABC and ABA stacked trilayer graphene using dual, locally gated field effect devices. The high efficiency and large breakdown voltage of the HfO(2) top and bottom gates enable independent tuning of the perpendicular electric field and the Fermi level over an unprecedentedly large range. We observe a resistance change of 6 orders of magnitude in the ABC trilayer, which demonstrates the opening of a band gap. Our data suggest that the gap saturates at a large displacement field of D ~ 3 V/nm, in agreement with self-consistent Hartree calculations. In contrast, the ABA trilayer remains metallic even under a large perpendicular electric field. Despite the absence of a band gap, the band structure of the ABA trilayer continues to evolve with increasing D. We observe signatures of two-band conduction at large D fields. Our self-consistent Hartree calculation reproduces many aspects of the experimental data but also points to the need for more sophisticated theory.

Evidence for a spontaneous gapped state in ultraclean bilayer graphene

At the charge neutrality point, bilayer graphene (BLG) is strongly susceptible to electronic interactions and is expected to undergo a phase transition to a state with spontaneously broken symmetries. By systematically investigating a large number of single-and double-gated BLG devices, we observe a bimodal distribution of minimum conductivities at the charge neutrality point. Although σ(min) is often approximately 2-3 e(2)/h (where e is the electron charge and h is Planck's constant), it is several orders of magnitude smaller in BLG devices that have both high mobility and low extrinsic doping. The insulating state in the latter samples appears below a transition temperature T(c) of approximately 5 K and has a T = 0 energy gap of approximately 3 meV. Transitions between these different states can be tuned by adjusting disorder or carrier density.

Single-gate bandgap opening of bilayer graphene by dual molecular doping

Dual doping-driven perpendicular electric field with opposite directions remarkably increase the on/off current ratio of bilayer graphene field-effect transistors. This unambiguously proves that it is possible to open a bandgap with two molecular dopants (F4-TCNQ and NH2 -functionalized self-assembled monolayers (SAMs)) even in a single-gate device structure.
