Metamagnetic behavior and Kondo breakdown in heavy-fermion CeFePO

Gate-tunable heavy fermions in a moiré Kondo lattice

The Kondo lattice-a matrix of local magnetic moments coupled through spin-exchange interactions to itinerant conduction electrons-is a prototype of strongly correlated quantum matter1-4. Usually, Kondo lattices are realized in intermetallic compounds containing lanthanide or actinide1,2. The complex electronic structure and limited tunability of both the electron density and exchange interactions in these bulk materials pose considerable challenges to studying Kondo lattice physics. Here we report the realization of a synthetic Kondo lattice in AB-stacked MoTe2/WSe2 moiré bilayers, in which the MoTe2 layer is tuned to a Mott insulating state, supporting a triangular moiré lattice of local moments, and the WSe2 layer is doped with itinerant conduction carriers. We observe heavy fermions with a large Fermi surface below the Kondo temperature. We also observe the destruction of the heavy fermions by an external magnetic field with an abrupt decrease in the Fermi surface size and quasi-particle mass. We further demonstrate widely and continuously gate-tunable Kondo temperatures through either the itinerant carrier density or the Kondo interaction. Our study opens the possibility of in situ access to the phase diagram of the Kondo lattice with exotic quantum criticalities in a single device based on semiconductor moiré materials2-9.

Anisotropy-driven quantum criticality in an intermediate valence system

Intermetallic compounds containing f-electron elements have been prototypical materials for investigating strong electron correlations and quantum criticality (QC). Their heavy fermion ground state evoked by the magnetic f-electrons is susceptible to the onset of quantum phases, such as magnetism or superconductivity, due to the enhanced effective mass (m^*) and a corresponding decrease of the Fermi temperature. However, the presence of f-electron valence fluctuations to a non-magnetic state is regarded an anathema to QC, as it usually generates a paramagnetic Fermi-liquid state with quasiparticles of moderate m^*. Such systems are typically isotropic, with a characteristic energy scale T₀ of the order of hundreds of kelvins that require large magnetic fields or pressures to promote a valence or magnetic instability. Here we show the discovery of a quantum critical behaviour and a Lifshitz transition under low magnetic field in an intermediate valence compound α-YbAlB₄. The QC origin is attributed to the anisotropic hybridization between the conduction and localized f-electrons. These findings suggest a new route to bypass the large valence energy scale in developing the QC.

The nature of quantum criticality in intermetallic f-electron compounds exhibiting valence fluctuations is not well understood. Here, using a combination of experimental techniques, the authors attribute quantum criticality in YbAlB₄ to the anisotropic hybridization between the conduction and f-electrons.

Field Angle Tuned Metamagnetism and Lifschitz Transitions in UPt3

Strongly correlated electronic systems can harbor a rich variety of quantum spin states. Understanding and controlling such spin states in quantum materials is of great current interest. Focusing on the simple binary system UPt₃ with ultrasound (US) as a probe we identify clear signatures in field sweeps demarkating new high field spin phases. Magnetostriction (MS) measurements performed up to 65 T also show signatures at the same fields confirming these phase transitions. At the very lowest temperatures (<200 mK) we also observe magneto-acoustic quantum oscillations which for θ = 90° (B||c-axis) and vicinity abruptly become very strong in the 24.8–30 T range. High resolution magnetization measurements for this same angle reveal a continuous variation of the magnetization implying the subtle nature of the implied transitions. With B rotated away from the c-axis, the US signatures occur at nearly the same field. These transitions merge with the separate sequence of the well known metamagnetic transition which commences at 20 T for θ = 0° but moves to higher fields as 1/cosθ. This merge, suggesting a tricritical behavior, occurs at θ ≈ 51° from the ab-plane. This is an unique off-symmetry angle where the length change along the c-axis is precisely zero due to the anisotropic nature of MS in UPt₃ for all magnetic field values.

Ferromagnetic quantum critical point in heavy-fermion iron oxypnictide Ce(Ru(1-x)Fe(x))PO

We have performed (31)P-NMR measurements on Ce(Ru(1-x)Fe(x))PO in order to investigate ferromagnetic (FM) quantum criticality, since a heavy-fermion (HF) ferromagnet CeRuPO with a two-dimensional structure turns into a HF paramagnet by an isovalent Fe substitution for Ru. We found that Ce(Ru(0.15)Fe(0.85))PO shows critical fluctuations down to ~0.3 K, as well as the continuous suppression of Curie temperature and the ordered moments by the Fe substitution. These experimental results suggest the presence of a FM quantum critical point (QCP) at x~0.86, which is a rare example among itinerant ferromagnets. In addition, we point out that the critical behaviors in Ce(Ru(0.15)Fe(0.85))PO share a similarity with those in YbRh(2)Si(2), where the local criticality of f electrons has been discussed. We reveal that Ce(Ru(1-x)Fe(x))PO is a new system to study FM quantum criticality in HF compounds.

Avoided ferromagnetic quantum critical point: unusual short-range ordered state in CeFePO

Cerium 4f electronic spin dynamics in single crystals of the heavy-fermion system CeFePO is studied by means of ac susceptibility, specific heat, and muon-spin relaxation (μSR). Short-range static magnetism occurs below the freezing temperature T(g) ≈ 0.7 K, which prevents the system from accessing a putative ferromagnetic quantum critical point. In the μSR, the sample-averaged muon asymmetry function is dominated by strongly inhomogeneous spin fluctuations below 10 K and exhibits a characteristic time-field scaling relation expected from glassy spin dynamics, strongly evidencing cooperative and critical spin fluctuations. The overall behavior can be ascribed neither to canonical spin glasses nor other disorder-driven mechanisms.
