Commensurate registry and chemisorption at a hetero-organic interface

Electrostatically Designing Materials and Interfaces

Collective electrostatic effects arise from the superposition of electrostatic potentials of periodically arranged (di)polar entities and are known to crucially impact the electronic structures of hybrid interfaces. Here, it is discussed, how they can be used outside the beaten paths of materials design for realizing systems with advanced and sometimes unprecedented properties. The versatility of the approach is demonstrated by applying electrostatic design not only to metal-organic interfaces and adsorbed (complex) monolayers, but also to inter-layer interfaces in van der Waals heterostructures, to polar metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and to the cylindrical pores of covalent organic frameworks (COFs). The presented design ideas are straightforward to simulate and especially for metal-organic interfaces also their experimental implementation has been amply demonstrated. For van der Waals heterostructures, the needed building blocks are available, while the required assembly approaches are just being developed. Conversely, for MOFs the necessary growth techniques exist, but more work on advanced linker molecules is required. Finally, COF structures exist that contain pores decorated with polar groups, but the electrostatic impact of these groups has been largely ignored so far. All this suggest that the dawn of the age of electrostatic design is currently experienced with potential breakthroughs lying ahead.

Robust Dipolar Layers between Organic Semiconductors and Silver for Energy-Level Alignment

The interface between a metal electrode and an organic semiconductor (OS) layer has a defining role in the properties of the resulting device. To obtain the desired performance, interlayers are introduced to modify the adhesion and growth of OS and enhance the efficiency of charge transport through the interface. However, the employed interlayers face common challenges, including a lack of electric dipoles to tune the mutual position of energy levels, being too thick for efficient electronic transport, or being prone to intermixing with subsequently deposited OS layers. Here, we show that monolayers of 1,3,5-tris(4-carboxyphenyl)benzene (BTB) with fully deprotonated carboxyl groups on silver substrates form a compact layer resistant to intermixing while capable of mediating energy-level alignment and showing a large insensitivity to substrate termination. Employing a combination of surface-sensitive techniques, i.e., low-energy electron microscopy and diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning tunneling microscopy, we have comprehensively characterized the compact layer and proven its robustness against mixing with the subsequently deposited organic semiconductor layer. Density functional theory calculations show that the robustness arises from a strong interaction of carboxylate groups with the Ag surface, and thus, the BTB in the first layer is energetically favored. Synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy shows that this layer displays considerable electrical dipoles that can be utilized for work function engineering and electronic alignment of molecular frontier orbitals with respect to the substrate Fermi level. Our work thus provides a widely applicable molecular interlayer and general insights necessary for engineering of charge injection layers for efficient organic electronics.

From a free electron gas to confined states: A mixed island of PTCDA and copper phthalocyanine on Ag(111)

When perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) is deposited on the Ag(111) surface at submonolayer coverage, it forms islands under which the native Shockley state of the Ag(111) surface can no longer be found. Previous work has shown that this state shifts upwards to form a new interface state starting at 0.6 V above the Fermi level, having properties of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). We investigated mixed islands of PTCDA and copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) to study the change in the electronic state with the addition of an electron donor. We no longer observe a 2DEG state and instead identify states at 0.46 and 0.79 V. While one state appears in dI/dV images as an array of one-dimensional quantum wells, our analysis shows that this state does not act as a free electron gas and that the features are instead localized above individual PTCDA molecules.

Role of Adatoms for the Adsorption of F4TCNQ on Au(111)

Organic adlayers on inorganic substrates often contain adatoms, which can be incorporated within the adsorbed molecular species, forming two-dimensional metal-organic frameworks at the substrate surface. The interplay between native adatoms and adsorbed molecules significantly changes various adlayer properties such as the adsorption geometry, the bond strength between the substrate and the adsorbed species, or the work function at the interface. Here, we use dispersion-corrected density functional theory to gain insight into the energetics that drive the incorporation of native adatoms within molecular adlayers based on the prototypical, experimentally well-characterized system of F4TCNQ on Au(111). We explain the adatom-induced modifications in the adsorption geometry and the adsorption energy based on the electronic structure and charge transfer at the interface.

Thermal stability and interlayer exchange processes in heterolayers of TiOPc and PTCDA on Ag(1 1 1)

Organic-organic interfaces, in particular donor-acceptor type heterointerfaces, represent central elements of organic electronic devices. Understanding and controlling their physical properties is key to improve and modify their performance. For this purpose we have investigated the structural properties and thermal evolution of molecular heterointerface model systems. Specifically, various stacked titanyl-phthalocyanine (TiOPc)-3,4,9,10-perylene-tetracarboxylic-dianhydride (PTCDA) heterolayers grown on Ag(1 1 1) have been examined using Fourier transform infrared absorption spectroscopy and spot-profile analysis low-energy electron diffraction. An accurate description of the thermal evolution and prevalence of the various phases of TiOPc and PTCDA is derived from the spectral signatures of the two molecular species explored in previous studies. Exceptionally high thermal stability is found for stacked heterolayers comprising TiOPc double layers with characteristic up-down arrangement of its axial Ti-O unit and single layers of PTCDA. Thereby, interlayer exchange is negligible in a wide temperature range ([Formula: see text] K). This is ascribed to attractive intermolecular interaction (dipole-dipole interaction, hydrogen bonding) among the TiOPc molecules oriented face-to-face within the TiOPc bilayer sheet. Stacked layers of comprising single layers of TiOPc and of PTCDA turn out to be thermally much less stable and more heterogeneous. In the course of their thermal evolution, a number of processes such as interlayer exchange, TiOPc double-layer formation and dewetting are encountered.

Two-photon photoemission spectroscopy of unoccupied electronic states at CuPc/PTCDA/Ag(1 1 1) interfaces

The unoccupied electronic structure of stacked layers of copper(II)phthalocyanine (CuPc) and perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) on Ag(1 1 1) has been investigated by means of two-photon photoemission (2PPE). We find a rich electronic structure comprising at least five unoccupied electronic states which we identify based on their energetic position and their dispersion in momentum space. More specifically, we observe the first and the second image-potential states of the modified Ag(1 1 1) surface, as well as the metal-organic interface state (IS) inherent to the PTCDA/Ag(1 1 1) interface. Moreover, two additional molecular features are observed for the CuPc/PTCDA/Ag(1 1 1) system which we attribute to an unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO  +  2) of CuPc. The 2PPE intensity of the IS exhibits a pronounced dependence on the pump photon energy, which closely follows the optical absorption of the outer molecular layer. This strongly points to charge transfer from the optically excited molecules to the interface state.

Theoretical Investigation of the Electronic Properties of Three Vanadium Phthalocyaninato (Pc) Based Complexes: PcV, PcVO, and PcVI

The electronic properties of three vanadium phthalocyaninato (Pc) based complexes (PcV, PcVO, and PcVI; I-III, respectively) were theoretically investigated and corresponding ^VL_2,3-edge XAS spectra modeled. Ground state (GS) DFT outcomes indicated that II is more stable than III by 141 kcal/mol; moreover, the Ziegler transition state method allowed us to estimate the PcV-X bond dissociation energy and to quantify σ/π contributions to the V-X interaction. As such, the Nalewajski-Mrozek V-X and V-N bond multiplicity indexes (V-O/V-I = 2.48/1.22; V-N = 0.64, 0.51, and 0.58 in I-III, respectively) state that the V-X bond strength and nature affect the V-N interaction. The coordination of X to V in the I → II/I → III reactions implies the transfer of two/one electrons from I to X. In both cases, the oxidation involves only the V ion; moreover, V 3d based orbitals from which electrons are transferred were identified. Literature ^I/IIL_2,3-edge XAS data were modeled by exploiting the DFT/ROCIS method. The same protocol was adopted to predict ^IIIL_2,3-edge XAS spectra. Theoretical results indicated that, along the whole series, spectral features lying at the lowest excitation energies (EEs) are mostly generated by states having the same GS spin multiplicity and involve 2p^V → SOMO (single occupied molecular orbital) single electronic excitations. XAS features at higher EEs include only states with the same GS spin multiplicity in I, while states with both ΔS = 0 and ΔS = +1 (S = total spin quantum number) are present in II and III with significant, in some cases prevailing, contributions from metal to ligand charge transfer (MLCT) excitations. Beyond the role played by MLCT transitions in determining XAS patterns, it is noteworthy that they involve only Pc-based empty orbitals with no participation of the X-based virtual levels.

Model potential for the description of metal/organic interface states

We present an analytical one-dimensional model potential for the description of electronic interface states that form at the interface between a metal surface and flat-lying adlayers of π-conjugated organic molecules. The model utilizes graphene as a universal representation of these organic adlayers. It predicts the energy position of the interface state as well as the overlap of its wave function with the bulk metal without free fitting parameters. We show that the energy of the interface state depends systematically on the bond distance between the carbon backbone of the adayers and the metal. The general applicability and robustness of the model is demonstrated by a comparison of the calculated energies with numerous experimental results for a number of flat-lying organic molecules on different closed-packed metal surfaces that cover a large range of bond distances.

Organic Multilayer Films Studied by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy

This Minireview focuses exclusively on work with scanning tunneling microscopy to study the self-assembled multilayer films (SAMTs) of organic molecules. The π-conjugated organic molecules form different structures within different monolayers on various substrates. The interplay between molecule-substrate and intermolecular interactions plays a key role in determining the stacking mode of organic multilayer films. Different substrates strongly influence the organic-film growth and electronic properties of the organic molecules. Geometric and electronic structures of SAMTs are important factors that may determine device performance. In addition to the inorganic interface, this Minireview addresses the organic-organic interface. Homo- and hetero-SAMTs of organic molecules are also considered. The subtle interplay between structural and electronic characteristics, on one hand, and functionality and reactivity, on the other hand, are highlighted.

Multi-Component Organic Layers on Metal Substrates

Increasingly high hopes are being placed on organic semiconductors for a variety of applications. Progress along these lines, however, requires the design and growth of increasingly complex systems with well-defined structural and electronic properties. These issues have been studied and reviewed extensively in single-component layers, but the focus is gradually shifting towards more complex and functional multi-component assemblies such as donor-acceptor networks. These blends show different properties from those of the corresponding single-component layers, and the understanding on how these properties depend on the different supramolecular environment of multi-component assemblies is crucial for the advancement of organic devices. Here, our understanding of two-dimensional multi-component layers on solid substrates is reviewed. Regarding the structure, the driving forces behind the self-assembly of these systems are described. Regarding the electronic properties, recent insights into how these are affected as the molecule's supramolecular environment changes are explained. Key information for the design and controlled growth of complex, functional multicomponent structures by self-assembly is summarized.

Coincident-site lattice matching during van der Waals epitaxy

Van der Waals (vdW) epitaxy is an attractive method for the fabrication of vdW heterostructures. Here Sb₂Te₃ films grown on three different kind of graphene substrates (monolayer epitaxial graphene, quasi freestanding bilayer graphene and the SiC (6√3 × 6√3)R30° buffer layer) are used to study the vdW epitaxy between two 2-dimensionally (2D) bonded materials. It is shown that the Sb₂Te₃ /graphene interface is stable and that coincidence lattices are formed between the epilayers and substrate that depend on the size of the surface unit cell. This demonstrates that there is a significant, although relatively weak, interfacial interaction between the two materials. Lattice matching is thus relevant for vdW epitaxy with two 2D bonded materials and a fundamental design parameter for vdW heterostructures.

Ordered growth of vanadyl phthalocyanine (VOPc) on an iron phthalocyanine (FePc) monolayer

The growth and characterisation of a non-planar phthalocyanine (vanadyl phthalocyanine, VOPc) on a complete monolayer (ML) of a planar phthalocyanine (Iron(II) phthalocyanine, FePc) on an Au(111) surface, has been investigated using ultra-high vacuum (UHV) scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and low energy electron diffraction (LEED). The surface mesh of the initial FePc monolayer has been determined and shown to correspond to an incommensurate overlayer, not commensurate as previously reported. Ordered islands of VOPc, with (1 × 1) epitaxy, grow on the FePc layer at submonolayer coverages. The individual VOPc molecules occupy sites directly atop the underlying FePc molecules, indicating that significant intermolecular bonding must occur. It is proposed that this interaction implies that the V[double bond, length as m-dash]O points down into the surface, allowing a Fe-O bond to form. The detailed appearance of the STM images of the VOPc molecules is consistent with previous studies in other VOPc growth studies in which this molecular orientation has been proposed.

Controlling Nanostructures by Templated Templates: Inheriting Molecular Orientation in Binary Heterostructures

Precise preparation strategies are required to fabricate molecular nanostructures of specific arrangement. In bottom-up approaches, where nanostructures are gradually formed by piecing together individual parts to the final structure, the self-ordering mechanisms of the involved structures are utilized. In order to achieve the desired structures regarding morphology, grain size, and orientation of the individual moieties, templates can be applied, which influence the formation process of subsequent structures. However, this strategy is of limited use for complex architectures because the templates only influence the structure formation at the interface between the template and the first compound. Here, we discuss the implementation of so-called templated templates and analyze to what extent orientations of the initial layers are inherited in the top layers of another compound to enable structural control in binary heterostructures. For that purpose, we prepared crystalline templates of the organic semiconductors pentacene and perfluoropentacene in different exclusive orientations. We observe that for templates of both individual materials the molecular orientation is inherited in the top layers of the respective counterpart. This behavior is also observed for various other molecules, indicating the robustness of this approach.

Reliable energy level alignment at physisorbed molecule-metal interfaces from density functional theory

A key quantity for molecule-metal interfaces is the energy level alignment of molecular electronic states with the metallic Fermi level. We develop and apply an efficient theoretical method, based on density functional theory (DFT) that can yield quantitatively accurate energy level alignment information for physisorbed metal-molecule interfaces. The method builds on the "DFT+Σ" approach, grounded in many-body perturbation theory, which introduces an approximate electron self-energy that corrects the level alignment obtained from conventional DFT for missing exchange and correlation effects associated with the gas-phase molecule and substrate polarization. Here, we extend the DFT+Σ approach in two important ways: first, we employ optimally tuned range-separated hybrid functionals to compute the gas-phase term, rather than rely on GW or total energy differences as in prior work; second, we use a nonclassical DFT-determined image-charge plane of the metallic surface to compute the substrate polarization term, rather than the classical DFT-derived image plane used previously. We validate this new approach by a detailed comparison with experimental and theoretical reference data for several prototypical molecule-metal interfaces, where excellent agreement with experiment is achieved: benzene on graphite (0001), and 1,4-benzenediamine, Cu-phthalocyanine, and 3,4,9,10-perylene-tetracarboxylic-dianhydride on Au(111). In particular, we show that the method correctly captures level alignment trends across chemical systems and that it retains its accuracy even for molecules for which conventional DFT suffers from severe self-interaction errors.

Unexpected interplay of bonding height and energy level alignment at heteromolecular hybrid interfaces

Although geometric and electronic properties of any physical or chemical system are always mutually coupled by the rules of quantum mechanics, counterintuitive coincidences between the two are sometimes observed. The coadsorption of the organic molecules 3,4,9,10-perylene tetracarboxylic dianhydride and copper-II-phthalocyanine on Ag(111) represents such a case, since geometric and electronic structures appear to be decoupled: one molecule moves away from the substrate while its electronic structure indicates a stronger chemical interaction, and vice versa for the other. Our comprehensive experimental and ab-initio theoretical study reveals that, mediated by the metal surface, both species mutually amplify their charge-donating and -accepting characters, respectively. This resolves the apparent paradox, and demonstrates with exceptional clarity how geometric and electronic bonding parameters are intertwined at metal-organic interfaces.

To tilt or not to tilt: correction of the distortion caused by inclined sample surfaces in low-energy electron diffraction

Low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) is a widely employed technique for the structural characterization of crystalline surfaces and epitaxial adsorbates. For technical reasons the accessible reciprocal space is limited at a given primary electron energy E. This limitation may be overcome by sweeping E to observe higher diffraction orders decisively enhancing the quantitative examination. Yet, in many cases, such as molecular films with rather large unit cells, the adsorbate reflexes become less pronounced at energies high enough to observe substrate reflexes. One possibility to overcome this problem is an intentional inclination of the sample surface during the measurement at the expense of the quantitative interpretability of then severely distorted diffraction patterns. Here, we introduce a correction method for the axially symmetric distortion in LEED images of tilted samples. We provide experimental confirmation for micro-channel plate LEED and spot-profile analysis LEED instruments using the (7×7) reconstructed surface of a Si(111) single crystal as a reference sample. Finally, we demonstrate that the correction of this distortion considerably improves the quantitative analysis of diffraction patterns of adsorbates since substrate and adsorbate reflexes can be evaluated simultaneously. As an illustrative example we have chosen an epitaxial monolayer of 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride on Ag(111) that is known to form a commensurate superstructure.

Order-disorder transition in the molecular orientation during initial growth of organic thin film

We report on the identification of molecular orientation and its order-disorder transition during the initial growth of 1,3-bis(N-carbazolyl)benzene (mCP) thin films on a highly ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) surface by using photoelectron spectroscopy (PES). Theoretical PES amplitudes using a quantum mechanical calculation that adapts independent atomic center approximation (IAC) were calculated to compare with experimental observations. At low coverage, an equilibrium orientation of isolated adsorbate was estimated. As the coverage increases, the interaction between adsorbates becomes dominant and raises the disorder, which results in changes in the PES shapes as well as the line broadening of each peak.

Understanding Structure and Bonding of Multilayered Metal-Organic Nanostructures

For organic and hybrid electronic devices, the physicochemical properties of the contained interfaces play a dominant role. To disentangle the various interactions occurring at such heterointerfaces, we here model a complex, yet prototypical, three-component system consisting of a Cu-phthalocyanine (CuPc) film on a 3,4,9,10-perylene-tetracarboxylic-dianhydride (PTCDA) monolayer adsorbed on Ag(111). The two encountered interfaces are similar, as in both cases there would be no bonding without van der Waals interactions. Still, they are also distinctly different, as only at the Ag(111)-PTCDA interface do massive charge-rearrangements occur. Using recently developed theoretical tools, we show that it has become possible to provide atomistic insight into the physical and chemical processes in this comparatively complex nanostructure distinguishing between interactions involving local rearrangements of the charge density and long-range van der Waals attraction.

Determination and correction of distortions and systematic errors in low-energy electron diffraction

We developed and implemented an algorithm to determine and correct systematic distortions in low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) images. The procedure is in principle independent of the design of the apparatus (spherical or planar phosphorescent screen vs. channeltron detector) and is therefore applicable to all device variants, known as conventional LEED, micro-channel plate LEED, and spot profile analysis LEED. The essential prerequisite is a calibration image of a sample with a well-known structure and a suitably high number of diffraction spots, e.g., a Si(111)-7×7 reconstructed surface. The algorithm provides a formalism which can be used to rectify all further measurements generated with the same device. In detail, one needs to distinguish between radial and asymmetric distortion. Additionally, it is necessary to know the primary energy of the electrons precisely to derive accurate lattice constants. Often, there will be a deviation between the true kinetic energy and the value set in the LEED control. Here, we introduce a method to determine this energy error more accurately than in previous studies. Following the correction of the systematic errors, a relative accuracy of better than 1% can be achieved for the determination of the lattice parameters of unknown samples.
