Strain stiffening in random packings of entangled granular chains

Force transmission during repose of flexible granular chains

We study the mechanics of standing columns formed during the repose of flexible granular chains. It is one of the many intriguing behaviours exhibited by granular materials when links capable of transmitting tension exist between particles. We develop and calibrate a discrete element method contact model to simulate the mechanics of the macroscopic flexible granular chains and conduct simulations of the angle of repose experiments of these chains by extracting a chain-filled cylinder and allowing the material to flow out under gravity and repose. We evaluate various micro-mechanical, topological and macroscopic parameters to elucidate the mechanics of the repose behaviour of chain ensembles. It is the ability of the links connecting the individual particles to transmit tensile forces along the chain backbone that provides lateral stability to the column, enabling them to stand. In particular, the contact force rearrangement inside the columns generates a self-confining radial stress near the base of the columns, which provides an important stabilizing stress.

De novo evolution of macroscopic multicellularity

While early multicellular lineages necessarily started out as relatively simple groups of cells, little is known about how they became Darwinian entities capable of sustained multicellular evolution1-3. Here we investigate this with a multicellularity long-term evolution experiment, selecting for larger group size in the snowflake yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) model system. Given the historical importance of oxygen limitation4, our ongoing experiment consists of three metabolic treatments5-anaerobic, obligately aerobic and mixotrophic yeast. After 600 rounds of selection, snowflake yeast in the anaerobic treatment group evolved to be macroscopic, becoming around 2 × 104 times larger (approximately mm scale) and about 104-fold more biophysically tough, while retaining a clonal multicellular life cycle. This occurred through biophysical adaptation-evolution of increasingly elongate cells that initially reduced the strain of cellular packing and then facilitated branch entanglements that enabled groups of cells to stay together even after many cellular bonds fracture. By contrast, snowflake yeast competing for low oxygen5 remained microscopic, evolving to be only around sixfold larger, underscoring the critical role of oxygen levels in the evolution of multicellular size. Together, this research provides unique insights into an ongoing evolutionary transition in individuality, showing how simple groups of cells overcome fundamental biophysical limitations through gradual, yet sustained, multicellular evolution.

Polymorph Stability and Free Energy of Crystallization of Freely-Jointed Polymers of Hard Spheres

The free energy of crystallization of monomeric hard spheres as well as their thermodynamically stable polymorph have been known for several decades. In this work, we present semianalytical calculations of the free energy of crystallization of freely-jointed polymers of hard spheres as well as of the free energy difference between the hexagonal closed packed (HCP) and face-centered cubic (FCC) polymorphs. The phase transition (crystallization) is driven by an increase in translational entropy that is larger than the loss of conformational entropy of chains in the crystal with respect to chains in the initial amorphous phase. The conformational entropic advantage of the HCP polymer crystal over the FCC one is found to be ΔschHCP-FCC≈0.331×10-5k per monomer (expressed in terms of Boltzmann's constant k). This slight conformational entropic advantage of the HCP crystal of chains is by far insufficient to compensate for the larger translational entropic advantage of the FCC crystal, which is predicted to be the stable one. The calculated overall thermodynamic advantage of the FCC over the HCP polymorph is supported by a recent Monte Carlo (MC) simulation on a very large system of 54 chains of 1000 hard sphere monomers. Semianalytical calculations using results from this MC simulation yield in addition a value of the total crystallization entropy for linear, fully flexible, athermal polymers of Δs≈0.93k per monomer.

Local and Global Order in Dense Packings of Semi-Flexible Polymers of Hard Spheres

The local and global order in dense packings of linear, semi-flexible polymers of tangent hard spheres are studied by employing extensive Monte Carlo simulations at increasing volume fractions. The chain stiffness is controlled by a tunable harmonic potential for the bending angle, whose intensity dictates the rigidity of the polymer backbone as a function of the bending constant and equilibrium angle. The studied angles range between acute and obtuse ones, reaching the limit of rod-like polymers. We analyze how the packing density and chain stiffness affect the chains' ability to self-organize at the local and global levels. The former corresponds to crystallinity, as quantified by the Characteristic Crystallographic Element (CCE) norm descriptor, while the latter is computed through the scalar orientational order parameter. In all cases, we identify the critical volume fraction for the phase transition and gauge the established crystal morphologies, developing a complete phase diagram as a function of packing density and equilibrium bending angle. A plethora of structures are obtained, ranging between random hexagonal closed packed morphologies of mixed character and almost perfect face centered cubic (FCC) and hexagonal close-packed (HCP) crystals at the level of monomers, and nematic mesophases, with prolate and oblate mesogens at the level of chains. For rod-like chains, a delay is observed between the establishment of the long-range nematic order and crystallization as a function of the packing density, while for right-angle chains, both transitions are synchronized. A comparison is also provided against the analogous packings of monomeric and fully flexible chains of hard spheres.

Experimental Analysis of the Relationship between Textile Structure, Tensile Strength and Comfort in 3D Printed Structured Fabrics

In this article, an experimental investigation was conducted to study the effects of 3D printed structured fabrics on the tensile strength of two additive manufacturing technologies: (i) fused deposition modeling (FDM); and (ii) stereolithography (SLA). Three types of structured fabrics were designed in a linked fabric structure, which resembled the main characteristics of a conventional textile. Through computer-aided design (CAD), the textile structures were sketched, which, in a STL format, were transferred to 3D printing software, and consequently, they were printed. The specimens were subjected to tensile tests to analyse the behaviour of the linked structures under tensile loads. The results obtained indicated that the elements structured in a linked fabric pattern showed a statistically significant effect between the design of the 3D printed structured fabric and its tensile strength. Some important properties in textiles, fabric areal density, fineness (tex) and fabric flexibility were also analysed. This study opens an important field of research on the mechanical resistance of textile structures manufactured by 3D printing, oriented for applications in wearables that have a promising future in the fields of medicine, aerospace, sports, fashion, etc.

Polymorphism and Perfection in Crystallization of Hard Sphere Polymers

We present results on polymorphism and perfection, as observed in the spontaneous crystallization of freely jointed polymers of hard spheres, obtained in an unprecedentedly long Monte Carlo (MC) simulation on a system of 54 chains of 1000 monomers. Starting from a purely amorphous configuration, after an initial dominance of the hexagonal closed packed (HCP) polymorph and a transitory random hexagonal close packed (rHCP) morphology, the system crystallizes in a final, stable, face centered cubic (FCC) crystal of very high perfection. An analysis of chain conformational characteristics, of the spatial distribution of monomers and of the volume accessible to them shows that the phase transition is caused by an increase in translational entropy that is larger than the loss of conformational entropy of the chains in the crystal, compared to the amorphous state. In spite of the significant local re-arrangements, as reflected in the bending and torsion angle distributions, the average chain size remains unaltered during crystallization. Polymers in the crystal adopt ideal random walk statistics as their great length renders local conformational details, imposed by the geometry of the FCC crystal, irrelevant.

Emergence of structure in columns of grains and elastic loops

It is possible to build free-standing, load-bearing structures using only rocks and loops of elastic material. We investigate how these structures emerge, and find that the necessary maximum loop spacing (the critical spacing) is a function of the frictional properties of the grains and the elasticity of the confining material. We derive a model to understand both of these relationships, which depends on a simplification of the behavior of the grains at the edge of a structure. We find that higher friction leads to larger stable grain-grain and grain-loop contact angles resulting in a simple function for the frictional critical spacing, which depends linearly on friction to first order. On the other hand, a higher bending rigidity enables the loops to better contain the hydrostatic pressure of the grains, which we understand using a hydroelastic scale. These findings will illuminate the stabilization of dirt by plant roots, and potentially enable the construction of simple adhesion-less structures using only granular material and fiber.

Structured fabrics with tunable mechanical properties

Structured fabrics, such as woven sheets or chain mail armours, derive their properties both from the constitutive materials and their geometry^1,2. Their design can target desirable characteristics, such as high impact resistance, thermal regulation, or electrical conductivity^3-5. Once realized, however, the fabrics' properties are usually fixed. Here we demonstrate structured fabrics with tunable bending modulus, consisting of three-dimensional particles arranged into layered chain mails. The chain mails conform to complex shapes², but when pressure is exerted at their boundaries, the particles interlock and the chain mails jam. We show that, with small external pressure (about 93 kilopascals), the sheets become more than 25 times stiffer than in their relaxed configuration. This dramatic increase in bending resistance arises because the interlocking particles have high tensile resistance, unlike what is found for loose granular media. We use discrete-element simulations to relate the chain mail's micro-structure to macroscale properties and to interpret experimental measurements. We find that chain mails, consisting of different non-convex granular particles, undergo a jamming phase transition that is described by a characteristic power-law function akin to the behaviour of conventional convex media. Our work provides routes towards lightweight, tunable and adaptive fabrics, with potential applications in wearable exoskeletons, haptic architectures and reconfigurable medical supports.

Yielding, rigidity, and tensile stress in sheared columns of hexapod granules

Granular packings of nonconvex or elongated particles can form freestanding structures like walls or arches. For some particle shapes, such as staples, the rigidity arises from interlocking of pairs of particles, but the origins of rigidity for noninterlocking particles remains unclear. We report on experiments and numerical simulations of sheared columns of "hexapods," particles consisting of three mutually orthogonal sphero-cylinders whose centers coincide. We vary the length-to-diameter aspect ratio, α, of the sphero-cylinders and subject the packings to quasistatic direct shear. For small α, we observe a finite yield stress. For large α, however, the column becomes rigid when sheared, supporting stresses that increase sharply with increasing strain. Analysis of x-ray microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) data collected during the shear reveals that the stiffening is associated with a tilted, oblate cluster of hexapods near the nominal shear plane in which particle deformation and average contact number both increase. Simulation results show that the particles are collectively under tension along one direction, even though they do not interlock pairwise. These tensions comes from contact forces carrying large torques, and they are perpendicular to the compressive stresses in the packing. They counteract the tendency to dilate, thus stabilizing the particle cluster.

Two-stage athermal solidification of semiflexible polymers and fibers

We study how solidification of model freely rotating polymers under athermal quasistatic compression varies with their bond angle θ0. All systems undergo two discrete, first-order-like transitions: entanglement at φ = φE(θ0) followed by jamming at φ = φJ(θ0) ≃ (4/3 ± 1/12)φE(θ0). For φ < φE(θ0), systems are in a "gas" phase wherein all chains remain free to translate and reorient. For φE(θ0) ≤ φ ≤ φJ(θ0), systems are in a liquid-like phase wherein chains are entangled. In this phase, chains' rigid-body-like motion is blocked, yet they can still locally relax via dihedral rotations, and hence energy and pressure remain extremely small. The ability of dihedral relaxation mechanisms to accommodate further compression becomes exhausted, and systems rigidify, at φJ(θ0). At and slightly above φJ, the bulk moduli increase linearly with the pressure P rather than jumping discontinuously, indicating these systems solidify via rigidity percolation. The character of the energy and pressure increases above φJ(θ0) can be characterized via chains' effective aspect ratio αeff. Large-αeff (small-θ0) systems' jamming is bending-dominated and is similar to that observed in systems composed of straight fibers. Small-αeff (large-θ0) systems' jamming is dominated by the degree to which individual chains' dihedrals can collapse into compact, tetrahedron-like structures. For intermediate θ0, chains remain in highly disordered globule-like configurations throughout the compression process; jamming occurs when entangled globules can no longer even locally relax away from one another.

Freely Jointed Polymers Made of Droplets

An important goal of self-assembly is to achieve a preprogrammed structure with high fidelity. Here, we control the valence of DNA-functionalized emulsions to make linear and branched model polymers, or "colloidomers." The distribution of cluster sizes is consistent with a polymerization process in which the droplets achieve their prescribed valence. Conformational statistics reveal that the chains are freely jointed, so that the Kuhn length is close to one bead diameter. The end-to-end length scales with the number of bonds N as N^{ν}, where ν≈3/4, in agreement with the Flory theory in two dimensions. The chain diffusion coefficient D approximately scales as D∝N^{-ν}, as predicted by the Zimm model. Unlike molecular polymers, colloidomers can be repeatedly assembled and disassembled under temperature cycling, allowing for reconfigurable, responsive matter.

Nonmonotonic dependence of polymer-glass mechanical response on chain bending stiffness

We investigate the mechanical properties of amorphous polymers by means of coarse-grained simulations and nonaffine lattice dynamics theory. A small increase of polymer chain bending stiffness leads first to softening of the material, while hardening happens only upon further strengthening of the backbones. This nonmonotonic variation of the storage modulus G^{'} with bending stiffness is caused by a competition between additional resistance to deformation offered by stiffer backbones and decreased density of the material due to a necessary decrease in monomer-monomer coordination. This counterintuitive finding suggests that the strength of polymer glasses may in some circumstances be enhanced by softening the bending of constituent chains.

Analyzing X-ray tomographies of granular packings

Starting from three-dimensional volume data of a granular packing, as, e.g., obtained by X-ray Computed Tomography, we discuss methods to first detect the individual particles in the sample and then analyze their properties. This analysis includes the pair correlation function, the volume and shape of the Voronoi cells, and the number and type of contacts formed between individual particles. We mainly focus on packings of monodisperse spheres, but we will also comment on other monoschematic particles such as ellipsoids and tetrahedra. This paper is accompanied by a package of free software containing all programs (including source code) and an example three-dimensional dataset which allows the reader to reproduce and modify all examples given.

Jamming of Semiflexible Polymers

We study jamming in model freely rotating polymers as a function of chain length N and bond angle θ_{0}. The volume fraction at jamming ϕ_{J}(θ_{0}) is minimal for rigid-rodlike chains (θ_{0}=0), and increases monotonically with increasing θ_{0}≤π/2. In contrast to flexible polymers, marginally jammed states of freely rotating polymers are highly hypostatic, even when bond and angle constraints are accounted for. Large-aspect-ratio (small θ_{0}) chains behave comparably to stiff fibers: resistance to large-scale bending plays a major role in their jamming phenomenology. Low-aspect-ratio (large θ_{0}) chains behave more like flexible polymers, but still jam at much lower densities due to the presence of frozen-in three-body correlations corresponding to the fixed bond angles. Long-chain systems jam at lower ϕ and are more hypostatic at jamming than short-chain systems. Implications of these findings for polymer solidification are discussed.

Role of Atomic Layer Functionalization in Building Scalable Bottom-Up Assembly of Ultra-Low Density Multifunctional Three-Dimensional Nanostructures

Building three-dimensional (3D) structures from their constituent zero-, one-, and two-dimensional nanoscale building blocks in a bottom-up assembly is considered the holey grail of nanotechnology. However, fabricating such 3D nanostructures at ambient conditions still remains a challenge. Here, we demonstrate an easily scalable facile method to fabricate 3D nanostructures made up of entirely zero-dimensional silicon dioxide (SiO₂) nanoparticles. By combining functional groups and vacuum filtration, we fabricate lightweight and highly structural stable 3D SiO₂ materials. Further synergistic effect of material is shown by addition of a 2D material, graphene oxide (GO) as reinforcement which results in 15-fold increase in stiffness. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are used to understand the interaction between silane functional groups (3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane) and SiO₂ nanoparticles thus confirming the reinforcement capability of GO. In addition, the material is stable under high temperature and offers a cost-effective alternative to both fire-retardant and oil absorption materials.

Effect of chain stiffness on the competition between crystallization and glass-formation in model unentangled polymers

We map out the solid-state morphologies formed by model soft-pearl-necklace polymers as a function of chain stiffness, spanning the range from fully flexible to rodlike chains. The ratio of Kuhn length to bead diameter (lK/r0) increases monotonically with increasing bending stiffness kb and yields a one-parameter model that relates chain shape to bulk morphology. In the flexible limit, monomers occupy the sites of close-packed crystallites while chains retain random-walk-like order. In the rodlike limit, nematic chain ordering typical of lamellar precursors coexists with close-packing. At intermediate values of bending stiffness, the competition between random-walk-like and nematic chain ordering produces glass-formation; the range of kb over which this occurs increases with the thermal cooling rate |Ṫ| implemented in our molecular dynamics simulations. Finally, values of kb between the glass-forming and rodlike ranges produce complex ordered phases such as close-packed spirals. Our results should provide a useful initial step in a coarse-grained modeling approach to systematically determining the effect of chain stiffness on the crystallization-vs-glass-formation competition in both synthetic and colloidal polymers.

Optimizing packing fraction in granular media composed of overlapping spheres

What particle shape will generate the highest packing fraction when randomly poured into a container? In order to explore and navigate the enormous search space efficiently, we pair molecular dynamics simulations with artificial evolution. Arbitrary particle shape is represented by a set of overlapping spheres of varying diameter, enabling us to approximate smooth surfaces with a resolution proportional to the number of spheres included. We discover a family of planar triangular particles, whose packing fraction of ϕ ∼ 0.73 is among the highest experimental results for disordered packings of frictionless particles. We investigate how ϕ depends on the arrangement of spheres comprising an individual particle and on the smoothness of the surface. We validate the simulations with experiments using 3D-printed copies of the simplest member of the family, a planar particle consisting of three overlapping spheres with identical radius. Direct experimental comparison with 3D-printed aspherical ellipsoids demonstrates that the triangular particles pack exceedingly well not only in the limit of large system size but also when confined to small containers.

The role of bond tangency and bond gap in hard sphere crystallization of chains

We report results from Monte Carlo simulations on dense packings of linear, freely-jointed chains of hard spheres of uniform size. In contrast to our past studies where bonded spheres along the chain backbone were tangent, in the present work a finite tolerance in the bond is allowed. Bond lengths are allowed to fluctuate in the interval [σ, σ + dl], where σ is the sphere diameter. We find that bond tolerance affects the phase behaviour of hard-sphere chains, especially in the close vicinity of the melting transition. First, a critical dl(crit) exists marking the threshold for crystallization, whose value decreases with increasing volume fraction. Second, bond gaps enhance the onset of phase transition by accelerating crystal nucleation and growth. Finally, bond tolerance has an effect on crystal morphologies: in the tangent limit the majority of structures correspond to stack-faulted random hexagonal close packing (rhcp). However, as bond tolerance increases a wealth of diverse structures can be observed: from single fcc (or hcp) crystallites to random hcp/fcc stackings with multiple directions. By extending the simulations over trillions of MC steps (10(12)) we are able to observe crystal-crystal transitions and perfection even for entangled polymer chains in accordance to the Ostwald's rule of stages in crystal polymorphism. Through simple geometric arguments we explain how the presence of rigid or flexible constraints affects crystallization in general atomic and particulate systems. Based on the present results, it can be concluded that proper tuning of bond gaps and of the connectivity network can be a controlling factor for the phase behaviour of model, polymer-based colloidal and granular systems.

Celebrating Soft Matter's 10th Anniversary: toward jamming by design

In materials science, high performance is typically associated with regularity and order, while disorder and the presence of defects are assumed to lead to sub-optimal outcomes. This holds for traditional solids such as crystals as well as for many types of nanoscale devices. However, there are circumstances where disorder can be harnessed to achieve performance not possible with approaches based on regularity. Recent research has shown opportunities specifically for soft matter. There, the phenomenon of jamming leads to unique emergent behavior that enables disordered, amorphous systems to switch reversibly between solid-like rigidity and fluid-like plasticity. This makes it possible to envision materials that can change stiffness or even shape adaptively. We review some of the progress in this direction, discussing examples where jamming has been explored from micro to macro scales in colloidal systems, suspensions, granular-materials-enabled soft robotics, and architecture. We focus in particular on how the jammed aggregate state can be tailored by controlling particle level properties and discuss very recent ideas that provide an important first step toward actual design of specifically targeted jamming behavior.

X-ray tomography system to investigate granular materials during mechanical loading

We integrate a small and portable medical x-ray device with mechanical testing equipment to enable in situ, non-invasive measurements of a granular material's response to mechanical loading. We employ an orthopedic C-arm as the x-ray source and detector to image samples mounted in the materials tester. We discuss the design of a custom rotation stage, which allows for sample rotation and tomographic reconstruction under applied compressive stress. We then discuss the calibration of the system for 3D computed tomography, as well as the subsequent image reconstruction process. Using this system to reconstruct packings of 3D-printed particles, we resolve packing features with 0.52 mm resolution in a (60 mm)(3) field of view. By analyzing the performance bounds of the system, we demonstrate that the reconstructions exhibit only moderate noise.

Evolving design rules for the inverse granular packing problem

If a collection of identical particles is poured into a container, different shapes will fill to different densities. But what is the shape that fills a container as close as possible to a pre-specified, desired density? We demonstrate a solution to this inverse-packing problem by framing it in the context of artificial evolution. By representing shapes as bonded spheres, we show how shapes may be mutated, simulated, and selected to produce particularly dense or loose packing aggregates, both with and without friction. Moreover, we show how motifs emerge linking these shapes together. The result is a set of design rules that function as an effective solution to the inverse packing problem for given packing procedures and boundary conditions. Finally, we show that these results are verified by experiments on 3D-printed prototypes used to make packings in the real world.

Aspects of jamming in two-dimensional athermal frictionless systems

In this work we provide an overview of jamming transitions in two dimensional systems focusing on the limit of frictionless particle interactions in the absence of thermal fluctuations. We first discuss jamming in systems with short range repulsive interactions, where the onset of jamming occurs at a critical packing density and where certain quantities show a divergence indicative of critical behavior. We describe how aspects of the dynamics change as the jamming density is approached and how these dynamics can be explored using externally driven probes. Different particle shapes can produce jamming densities much lower than those observed for disk-shaped particles, and we show how jamming exhibits fragility for some shapes while for other shapes this is absent. Next we describe the effects of long range interactions and jamming behavior in systems such as charged colloids, vortices in type-II superconductors, and dislocations. We consider the effect of adding obstacles to frictionless jamming systems and discuss connections between this type of jamming and systems that exhibit depinning transitions. Finally, we discuss open questions such as whether the jamming transition in all these different systems can be described by the same or a small subset of universal behaviors, as well as future directions for studies of jamming transitions in two dimensional systems, such as jamming in self-driven or active matter systems.

Particle shape effects on the stress response of granular packings

We present measurements of the stress response of packings formed from a wide range of particle shapes. Besides spheres these include convex shapes such as the Platonic solids, truncated tetrahedra, and triangular bipyramids, as well as more complex, non-convex geometries such as hexapods with various arm lengths, dolos, and tetrahedral frames. All particles were 3D-printed in hard resin. Well-defined initial packing states were established through preconditioning by cyclic loading under given confinement pressure. Starting from such initial states, stress-strain relationships for axial compression were obtained at four different confining pressures for each particle type. While confining pressure has the largest overall effect on the mechanical response, we find that particle shape controls the details of the stress-strain curves and can be used to tune packing stiffness and yielding. By correlating the experimentally measured values for the effective Young's modulus under compression, yield stress and energy loss during cyclic loading, we identify trends among the various shapes that allow for designing a packing's aggregate behavior.

Capillary breakup of discontinuously rate thickening suspensions

Using discontinuously rate thickening suspensions (DRTS) as a model system, we show that beads-on-a-string morphologies can arise as a result of external viscous drag acting during capillary-driven breakup of a non-Newtonian fluid. To minimize the perturbative effect of gravity, we developed a new experimental test platform in which the filament is supported in a horizontal position at the surface of an immiscible oil bath. We show that the evolution of thin DRTS filaments during the capillary thinning process is well described by a set of one-dimensional slender filament equations. The strongly rate-dependent rheology of the test fluid and the aspect ratio of the filament couple to control the thinning dynamics and lead to a simple criterion describing the localized arrest of the capillary thinning process and the subsequent formation of complex, high aspect ratio beads-on-a-string structures.

Simple model for chain packing and crystallization of soft colloidal polymers

We study a simple bead-spring polymer model exhibiting competing crystallization and glass transitions. Constant-pressure molecular dynamics simulations are employed to study phase behavior and morphological order. For adequately slow quench rates, chain systems exhibit a first-order phase transition (crystallization) below a critical temperature T=T(cryst). We observe the formation of close-packed crystallites of FCC and/or HCP order, separated by domain walls, twin defects, and amorphous regions. Such crystal structures closely resemble the corresponding ordered morphologies of athermal polymer packings: fully flexible chains retain random-walk-like configurations in the crystalline state and do not form lamellae, while semiflexible chains do form lamellae. The model presented here is well suited to the modeling of granular and colloidal polymers, in particular for elucidating the factors that dictate the formation of specific ordered morphologies.

Adapting granular materials through artificial evolution

Over 200 years after Coulomb's studies, a general connection between the mechanical response of a granular material and the constituents' shape remains unknown. The key difficulty in articulating this relationship is that shape is an inexhaustible parameter, making its systematic exploration infeasible. Here we show that the role of particle shape can, however, be explored efficiently when granular design is viewed in the context of artificial evolution. By introducing a mutable representation for particle shapes, we demonstrate with computer simulation how shapes can be evolved. As proof of principle, we predicted motifs that link shape to packing stiffness, discovered a particle that produces aggregates that stiffen-rather than weaken-under compression, and verified the results using three-dimensional printing. More generally, our approach facilitates the exploration of the role of arbitrary particle geometry in jammed systems, and invites the discovery and design of granular matter with optimized properties.

Segregation in mixtures of granular chains and spherical grains under vertical vibration

We experimentally investigate segregation behaviors of binary granular mixtures consisting of granular chains and spherical grains with different interstitial media under vertical vibrations. A quantitative criterion is proposed to locate the boundaries between different vibrating phases. The water-immersed granular mixture exhibits two interesting types of segregation behaviors: chain-on-top and sandwich patterns. However, the phenomenon of sandwich segregation is absent for the air-immersed mixture. The topological differences of phase diagrams between two different environments indicate that the interstitial fluid plays an important role on the granular demixing. Additionally, the phase behaviors of mixtures for the different chain lengths show a not significant discrepancy. Finally, the vibrating thickness ratio determining the phase boundary characterizes the mixing extent of the granular bed. The estimated ratios for various chain lengths exhibit a monotonically decreasing dependence, when the vibration frequency increases.

Rheology and shear band suppression in particle and chain mixtures

Using numerical simulations we consider an amorphous particle mixture which exhibits shear localization, and find that the addition of even a small fraction of chains strongly enhances the material strength, creating pronounced overshoot features in the stress-strain curves. The strengthening occurs in the case where the chains are initially perpendicular to the shear direction, leading to a suppression of the shear band. This also leads to stiffening effects that are typical of polymeric systems. For large strain, the chains migrate to the region where a shear band forms, resulting in a stress drop. For chains larger than the linear system size we find oscillatory behavior, which does not resemble polymeric systems since the second stress peak is larger than the first. Our results are also useful for providing insights into methods of controlling and strengthening granular materials against failure.

Spontaneous crystallization in athermal polymer packings

We review recent results from extensive simulations of the crystallization of athermal polymer packings. It is shown that above a certain packing density, and for sufficiently long simulations, all random assemblies of freely-jointed chains of tangent hard spheres of uniform size show a spontaneous transition into a crystalline phase. These polymer crystals adopt predominantly random hexagonal close packed morphologies. An analysis of the local environment around monomers based on the shape and size of the Voronoi polyhedra clearly shows that Voronoi cells become more spherical and more symmetric as the system transits to the ordered state. The change in the local environment leads to an increase in the monomer translational contribution to the entropy of the system, which acts as the driving force for the phase transition. A comparison of the crystallization of hard-sphere polymers and monomers highlights similarities and differences resulting from the constraints imposed by chain connectivity.

Entangled granular media

We study the geometrically induced cohesion of ensembles of granular "u particles" that mechanically entangle through particle interpenetration. We vary the length-to-width ratio l/w of the u particles and form them into freestanding vertical columns. In a laboratory experiment, we monitor the response of the columns to sinusoidal vibration (with peak acceleration Γ). Column collapse occurs in a characteristic time τ which follows the relation τ∝exp(Γ/Δ). Δ resembles an activation energy and is maximal at intermediate l/w. A simulation reveals that optimal strength results from competition between packing and entanglement.
