Mechanism to generate a two-dimensional electron gas at the surface of the charge-ordered semiconductor BaBiO3

Evidence of half-metallicity at the BiFeO3(001) surface

Evidence of half-metallicity at the BiFeO3 (001) surface has been found. Half-metals are considered to be one of the most promising candidate for efficient spin-injection and detection processes in spintronic devices.

Suppression of Three-Dimensional Charge Density Wave Ordering via Thickness Control

Barium bismuth oxide (BaBiO_{3}) is the end member of two families of high-T_{c} superconductors, i.e., BaPb_{1-x}Bi_{x}O_{3} and Ba_{1-x}K_{x}BiO_{3}. The undoped parent compound is an insulator, exhibiting a charge density wave that is strongly linked to a static breathing distortion in the oxygen sublattice of the perovskite structure. We report a comprehensive spectroscopic and x-ray diffraction study of BaBiO_{3} thin films, showing that the minimum film thickness required to stabilize the breathing distortion and charge density wave is ≈11 unit cells, and that both phenomena are suppressed in thinner films. Our results constitute the first experimental observation of charge density wave suppression in bismuthate compounds without intentionally introducing dopants.

Solar-Light-Driven Pure Water Splitting with Ultrathin BiOCl Nanosheets

A suitable photocatalyst for overall water splitting has been produced by overcoming the disadvantage of the band structure in bulk BiOCl by reducing the thickness to the quantum scale. The ultrathin BiOCl nanosheets with surface/subsurface defects realized the solar-driven pure water splitting in the absence of any co-catalysts or sacrificial agent. These surface defects cannot only shift both the valence band and conduction band upwards for band-gap narrowing but also promote charge-carrier separation. The amount of defects in the outer layer surface of BiOCl results in an enhancement of carrier density and faster charge transport. First-principles calculations provide clear evidence that the formation of surface oxygen vacancies is easier for the ultrathin BiOCl nanosheets than for its thicker counterpart. These defects can serve as active sites to effectively adsorb and dissociate H2 O molecules, resulting in a significantly improved water-splitting performance.

Hybrid functionals applied to perovskites

After being used for years in the chemistry community to describe molecular properties, hybrid functionals have been increasingly and successfully employed for a wide range of solid state problems which are not accurately accessible by standard density functional theory. In particular, the upsurge of interest in transition metal perovskite-based compounds, motivated by their technological relevance and functional ductility, has incentivized the use of hybrid functionals for realistic applications, as hybrid functionals appear to be capable of capturing the complex correlated physics of this class of oxide material, characterized by a subtle coupling between several competing interactions (lattice, orbital, spin). Here we present a map of recent applications of hybrid functionals to perovskites, aiming to cover an ample spectra of cases, including the 'classical' 3d compounds (manganites, titanates, nickelates, ferrites, etc.), less conventional examples from the the 4d (technetiates) and 5d (iridates) series, and the (non-transition metal) sp perovskite BaBiO3. We focus our attention on the technical aspects of the hybrid functional formalism, such as the role of the mixing and (for range-separated hybrids) screening parameters, and on an extended array of physical phenomena: pressure- and doping-induced insulator-to-metal and structural phase transitions, multiferroism, surface and interface effects, charge ordering and localization effects, and spin-orbit coupling.
