Quantum bicriticality in the heavy-fermion metamagnet YbAgGe

Weak antilocalization in the topological semimetal candidate YbAuSb

We report a study of the magnetic and magnetotransport properties of YbAuSb single crystals, which were grown using the bismuth flux. The x-ray diffraction data indicate that YbAuSb crystallizes in LiGaGe-type hexagonal structure with space groupP63mc. Our magnetic measurements revealed that YbAuSb is nonmagnetic with a divalent state of ytterbium ion. The temperature-dependent electrical resistivity exhibits a metallic behavior. A cusp-like feature in transverse and longitudinal magnetoresistance is observed at the low field regime. This cusp-like feature is attributed to the weak antilocalization (WAL) effect, which is more prominent at low temperatures. The transverse magnetoconductivity in low field region follows semiclassical model∼B, which is consistent with the presence of WAL phenomena. The WAL effect in transverse and longitudinal magnetoconductance is well explained using the modified Hikami-Larkin-Nagaoka and generalized Altshuler-Aronov model, respectively. The Hall resistivity shows a linear field dependence with a positive slope, suggesting hole charge carriers dominate in electrical transport. The calculated carrier density and mobility are in the order of 1020 cm-3and 102 cm2 V-1 s-1, respectively.

A mechanism for the strange metal phase in rare-earth intermetallic compounds

The elusive strange metal phase (ground state) was observed in a variety of quantum materials, notably in f-electron–based rare-earth intermetallic compounds. Its emergence has remained unclear. Here, we propose a generic mechanism for this phenomenon driven by the interplay of the gapless fermionic short-ranged antiferromagnetic spin correlation and critical bosonic charge fluctuations near a Kondo breakdown quantum phase transition. It is manifested as a fluctuating Kondo-scattering–stabilized critical (gapless) fermionic spin liquid. It shows ω/T scaling in dynamical electron scattering rate, a signature of quantum criticality. Our results on quasilinear-in-temperature scattering rate and logarithmic-in-temperature divergence in specific heat coefficient as temperature vanishes were recently seen in CePd1−xNi_xAl.

A major mystery in strongly interacting quantum systems is the microscopic origin of the “strange metal” phenomenology, with unconventional metallic behavior that defies Landau’s Fermi liquid framework for ordinary metals. This state is found across a wide range of quantum materials, notably in rare-earth intermetallic compounds at finite temperatures (T) near a magnetic quantum phase transition, and shows a quasilinear-in-temperature resistivity and a logarithmic-in-temperature specific heat coefficient. Recently, an even more enigmatic behavior pointing toward a stable strange metal ground state was observed in CePd1−xNi_xAl, a geometrically frustrated Kondo lattice compound. Here, we propose a mechanism for such phenomena driven by the interplay of the gapless fermionic short-ranged antiferromagnetic spin correlations (spinons) and critical bosonic charge (holons) fluctuations near a Kondo breakdown quantum phase transition. Within a dynamical large-N approach to the Kondo–Heisenberg lattice model, the strange metal phase is realized in transport and thermodynamical quantities. It is manifested as a fluctuating Kondo-scattering–stabilized critical (gapless) fermionic spin-liquid metal. It shows ω/T scaling in dynamical electron scattering rate, a signature of quantum criticality. Our results offer a qualitative understanding of the CePd1−xNi_xAl compound and suggest a possibility of realizing the quantum critical strange metal phase in correlated electron systems in general.

Entropy Evolution in the Magnetic Phases of Partially Frustrated CePdAl

In the heavy-fermion metal CePdAl, long-range antiferromagnetic order coexists with geometric frustration of one-third of the Ce moments. At low temperatures, the Kondo effect tends to screen the frustrated moments. We use magnetic fields B to suppress the Kondo screening and study the magnetic phase diagram and the evolution of the entropy with B employing thermodynamic probes. We estimate the frustration by introducing a definition of the frustration parameter based on the enhanced entropy, a fundamental feature of frustrated systems. In the field range where the Kondo screening is suppressed, the liberated moments tend to maximize the magnetic entropy and strongly enhance the frustration. Based on our experiments, this field range may be a promising candidate to search for a quantum spin liquid.

Grüneisen parameter studies on heavy fermion quantum criticality

The Grüneisen parameter, experimentally determined from the ratio of thermal expansion to specific heat, quantifies the pressure dependence of characteristic energy scales of matter. It is highly enhanced for Kondo lattice systems, whose properties are strongly dependent on the pressure sensitive antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between f- and conduction electrons. In this review, we focus on the divergence of the Grüneisen parameter and its magnetic analogue, the adiabatic magnetocaloric effect, for heavy-fermion metals near quantum critical points. We compare experimental results with current theoretical models, including the effect of strong geometrical frustration. We also discuss the possibility of using materials with the divergent magnetic Grüneisen parameter for adiabatic demagnetization cooling to very low temperatures.

Preserved entropy and fragile magnetism

A large swath of quantum critical and strongly correlated electron systems can be associated with the phenomena of preserved entropy and fragile magnetism. In this overview we present our thoughts and plans for the discovery and development of lanthanide and transition metal based, strongly correlated systems that are revealed by suppressed, fragile magnetism, quantum criticality, or grow out of preserved entropy. We will present and discuss current examples such as YbBiPt, YbAgGe, YbFe2Zn20, PrAg2In, BaFe2As2, CaFe2As2, LaCrSb3 and LaCrGe3 as part of our motivation and to provide illustrative examples.

Multiple Metamagnetic Quantum Criticality in Sr_{3}Ru_{2}O_{7}

Bilayer strontium ruthenate Sr_{3}Ru_{2}O_{7} displays pronounced non-Fermi liquid behavior at magnetic fields around 8 T, applied perpendicular to the ruthenate planes, which previously has been associated with an itinerant metamagnetic quantum critical end point (QCEP). We focus on the magnetic Grüneisen parameter Γ_{H}, which is the most direct probe to characterize field-induced quantum criticality. We confirm quantum critical scaling due to a putative two-dimensional QCEP near 7.845(5) T, which is masked by two ordered phases A and B, identified previously by neutron scattering. In addition, we find evidence for a QCEP at 7.53(2) T and determine the quantum critical regimes of both instabilities and the effect of their superposition.

Characteristic signatures of quantum criticality driven by geometrical frustration

Geometrical frustration describes situations where interactions are incompatible with the lattice geometry and stabilizes exotic phases such as spin liquids. Whether geometrical frustration of magnetic interactions in metals can induce unconventional quantum critical points is an active area of research. We focus on the hexagonal heavy fermion metal CeRhSn, where the Kondo ions are located on distorted kagome planes stacked along the c axis. Low-temperature specific heat, thermal expansion, and magnetic Grüneisen parameter measurements prove a zero-field quantum critical point. The linear thermal expansion, which measures the initial uniaxial pressure derivative of the entropy, displays a striking anisotropy. Critical and noncritical behaviors along and perpendicular to the kagome planes, respectively, prove that quantum criticality is driven be geometrical frustration. We also discovered a spin flop-type metamagnetic crossover. This excludes an itinerant scenario and suggests that quantum criticality is related to local moments in a spin liquid-like state.
