Dynamical Control of Topology in Polar Skyrmions via Twisted Light

Twisted light carries a nonzero orbital angular momentum, that can be transferred from light to electrons and particles ranging from nanometers to micrometers. Up to now, the interplay between twisted light with dipolar systems has scarcely been explored, though the latter bear abundant forms of topologies such as skyrmions and embrace strong light-matter coupling. Here, using first-principles-based simulations, we show that twisted light can excite and drive dynamical polar skyrmions and transfer its nonzero winding number to ferroelectric ultrathin films. The skyrmion is successively created and annihilated alternately at the two interfaces, and experiences a periodic transition from a markedly "Bloch" to "Néel" character, accompanied with the emergence of a "Bloch point" topological defect with vanishing polarization. The dynamical evolution of skyrmions is connected to a constant jump of topological number between "0" and "1" over time. These intriguing phenomena are found to have an electrostatic origin. Our study thus demonstrates that, and explains why this unique light-matter interaction can be very powerful in creating and manipulating topological solitons in functional materials.

Fundamental symmetry origins in the chiral interactions of optical vortices

Recently, a variety of mechanisms have been discovered that extend the range of optical techniques for identifying and characterizing molecular chirality, beyond those associated with optical polarization. It is now evident that beams of light with a twisted wavefront, known as optical vortices, can also interact with chiral matter with a specificity determined by relative handedness. Exploring this chiral sensitivity of vortex light in its interactions with matter requires careful consideration of the symmetry properties that engage in such processes. Most of the familiar measures of chirality are directly applicable to either matter, or to light itself-but only to one or the other. To elicit the principles that determine the viability of distinctly optical vortex-based forms of chiral discrimination invites a more universal approach to symmetry analysis, as is afforded by the common, fundamental physics of CPT symmetry. Taking this approach supports a comprehensive and straightforward analysis to identify the mechanistic origins of vortex chiroptical interactions. Careful inspection of selection rules for absorption also elicits the principles governing any identifiable engagement with vortex structures, providing a reliable basis to ascertain the viability of other forms of enantioselective vortex interaction.

Multiplexed vortex state array toward high-dimensional data multicasting

Optical vortex array has drawn widespread attention since the boom of special applications such as molecular selecting and optical communication. Here, we propose an integrated phase-only scheme to generate multiple multiplexed vortex beams simultaneously, constituting a multiplexed vortex state array, where the spatial position, as well as the corresponding orbital angular momentum (OAM) spectrum, can be manipulated flexibly as desired. Proof-of-concept experiments are carried out and show a few different multiplexed vortex state arrays that fit well with the simulation. Moreover, regarding the array as a data-carrier, a one-to-many multicasting link through multi-state OAM shift keying, a high-dimensional data coding, is also available in free space. In the experiment, four various OAM states are employed and achieve four bits binary symbols, and finally distribute three different images to three separate receivers independently from the same transmitter, showing great potential in the future high-dimensional optical networks.

Symmetry and Quantum Features in Optical Vortices

Optical vortices are beams of laser light with screw symmetry in their wavefront. With a corresponding azimuthal dependence in optical phase, they convey orbital angular momentum, and their methods of production and applications have become one of the most rapidly accelerating areas in optical physics and technology. It has been established that the quantum nature of electromagnetic radiation extends to properties conveyed by each individual photon in such beams. It is therefore of interest to identify and characterize the symmetry aspects of the quantized fields of vortex radiation that relate to the beam and become manifest in its interactions with matter. Chirality is a prominent example of one such aspect; many other facets also invite attention. Fundamental CPT symmetry is satisfied throughout the field of optics, and it plays significantly into manifestations of chirality where spatial parity is broken; duality symmetry between electric and magnetic fields is also involved in the detailed representation. From more specific considerations of spatial inversion, amongst which it emerges that the topological charge has the character of a pseudoscalar, other elements of spatial symmetry, beyond simple parity inversion, prove to repay additional scrutiny. A photon-based perspective on these features enables regard to be given to the salient quantum operators, paying heed to quantum uncertainty limits of observables. The analysis supports a persistence in features of significance for the material interactions of vortex beams, which may indicate further scope for suitably tailored experimental design.

Close-packed optical vortex lattices with controllable structures

As a spatial structured light field, the optical vortex (OV) has attracted extensive attention in recent years. In practice, the OV lattice (OVL) is an optimal candidate for applications of orbital angular momentum (OAM)-based optical communications, microparticle manipulation, and micro/nanofabrication. However, traditional methods for producing OVLs meet a significant challenge: the OVL structures cannot be adjusted freely and form a close-packed arrangement, simultaneously. To overcome these difficulties, we propose an alternative scheme to produce close-packed OVLs (CPOVLs) with controllable structures. By borrowing the concept of the close-packed lattice from solid-state physics, CPOVLs with versatile structures are produced by using logical operations of expanding OV primitive cells combined with the technique of phase mask generation. Then, the existence of OAM states in the CPOVLs is verified. Furthermore, the energy flow and OAM distribution of the CPOVLs are visualized and analyzed. From a light field physics viewpoint, this work increases the adjustment dimensions and extends the fundamental understanding of the OVL, which will introduce novel applications.

Topological characterization of carbon nanotubes

We show that the tight-binding Hamiltonian of any carbon nanotube with C _N symmetry can be represented by N decoupled tight-binding Hamiltonians of molecular chains, for which a general pseudospin formulation, characterized by specific paths in a two-dimensional auxiliary space, is developed. The quantum phases therefore are given by a set of N winding numbers of the paths. The paths degenerate to lines and circles for armchair and zigzag carbon nanotubes, respectively. They rotate in the auxiliary space when a magnetic field of varying strength is applied along the carbon nanotube, which gives rise to quantum phase transitions.

Use of polarization freedom beyond polarization-division multiplexing to support high-speed and spectral-efficient data transmission

Increasing the system capacity and spectral efficiency (SE) per unit bandwidth is one of the ultimate goals for data network designers, especially when using technologies compatible with current embedded fiber infrastructures. Among these, the polarization-division-multiplexing (PDM) scheme, which supports two independent data channels on a single wavelength with orthogonal polarization states, has become a standard one in most state-of-art telecommunication systems. Currently, however, only two polarization states (that is, PDM) can be used, setting a barrier for further SE improvement. Assisted by coherent detection and digital signal processing, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a scheme for pseudo-PDM of four states (PPDM-4) by manipulation of four linearly polarized data channels with the same wavelength. Without any modification of the fiber link, we successfully transmit a 100-Gb s^-1 PPDM-4 differential-phase-shift-keying signal over a 150-km single-mode fiber link. Such a method is expected to open new possibilities to fully explore the use of polarization freedom for capacity and SE improvement over existing fiber systems.

Simple technique for generating the perfect optical vortex

We propose an improved technique for generating the perfect optical vortex. This technique is notable for the simplicity of its practical realization and high quality of the results. The efficiency of the proposed technique is illustrated with the results of physical experiments and an example of its application in optical trapping of small particles.
