Hyperfine splitting and room-temperature ferromagnetism of Ni at multimegabar pressure

Robust magnetism and crystal structure in Dirac semimetal EuMnBi2under high pressure

Dirac materials offer exciting opportunities to explore low-energy carrier dynamics and novel physical phenomena, especially their interaction with magnetism. In this context, this work focuses on studies of pressure control on the magnetic state of EuMnBi2, a representative magnetic Dirac semimetal, through time-domain synchrotron Mössbauer spectroscopy in151Eu. Contrary to the previous report that the antiferromagnetic order is suppressed by pressure above 4 GPa, we have observed robust magnetic order up to 33.1 GPa. Synchrotron-based x-ray diffraction experiment on a pure EuMnBi2sample shows that the tetragonal crystal lattice remains stable up to at least 31.7 GPa.

Pressure effect on magnetism and valence in ferromagnetic superconductor Eu(Fe0.75Ru0.25)2As2

Eu(Fe_0.75Ru_0.25)₂As₂is an intriguing system with unusual coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism, providing a unique platform to study the nature of such coexistence. To establish a magnetic phase diagram, time-domain synchrotron Mössbauer experiments in¹⁵¹Eu have been performed on a single crystalline Eu(Fe_0.75Ru_0.25)₂As₂sample under hydrostatic pressures and at low temperatures. Upon compression the magnetic ordering temperature increases sharply from 20 K at ambient pressure, reaching ∼49 K at 10.1 GPa. With further compression, the magnetic order is suppressed and eventually collapses. Isomer shift values from Mössbauer measurements and x-ray absorption spectroscopy data at EuL₃edge show that pressure drives Eu ions to a homogeneous intermediate valence state with mean valence of ∼2.4 at 27.4 GPa, possibly responsible for the suppression of magnetism. Synchrotron powder x-ray diffraction experiment reveals a tetragonal to collapsed-tetragonal structural transition around 5 GPa, a lower transition pressure than in the parent compound. These results provide guidance to further work investigating the interplay of superconductivity and magnetism.

Applications of High-Pressure Technology for High-Entropy Alloys: A Review

High-entropy alloys are a new type of material developed in recent years. It breaks the traditional alloy-design conventions and has many excellent properties. High-pressure treatment is an effective means to change the structures and properties of metal materials. The pressure can effectively vary the distance and interaction between molecules or atoms, so as to change the bonding mode, and form high-pressure phases. These new material states often have different structures and characteristics, compared to untreated metal materials. At present, high-pressure technology is an effective method to prepare alloys with unique properties, and there are many techniques that can achieve high pressures. The most commonly used methods include high-pressure torsion, large cavity presses and diamond-anvil-cell presses. The materials show many unique properties under high pressures which do not exist under normal conditions, providing a new approach for the in-depth study of materials. In this paper, high-pressure (HP) technologies applied to high-entropy alloys (HEAs) are reviewed, and some possible ways to develop good properties of HEAs using HP as fabrication are introduced. Moreover, the studies of HEAs under high pressures are summarized, in order to deepen the basic understanding of HEAs under high pressures, which provides the theoretical basis for the application of high-entropy alloys.

A laser heating facility for energy-dispersive X-ray absorption spectroscopy

A double-sided laser heating setup for diamond anvil cells installed on the ID24 beamline of the ESRF is presented here. The setup geometry is specially adopted for the needs of energy-dispersive X-ray absorption spectroscopic (XAS) studies of materials under extreme pressure and temperature conditions. We illustrate the performance of the facility with a study on metallic nickel at 60 GPa. The XAS data provide the temperature of the melting onset and quantitative information on the structural parameters of the first coordination shell in the hot solid up to melting.

Synchrotron-based Nickel Mössbauer Spectroscopy

We used a novel experimental setup to conduct the first synchrotron-based (61)Ni Mössbauer spectroscopy measurements in the energy domain on Ni coordination complexes and metalloproteins. A representative set of samples was chosen to demonstrate the potential of this approach. (61)NiCr2O4 was examined as a case with strong Zeeman splittings. Simulations of the spectra yielded an internal magnetic field of 44.6 T, consistent with previous work by the traditional (61)Ni Mössbauer approach with a radioactive source. A linear Ni amido complex, (61)Ni{N(SiMe3)Dipp}2, where Dipp = C6H3-2,6-(i)Pr2, was chosen as a sample with an "extreme" geometry and large quadrupole splitting. Finally, to demonstrate the feasibility of metalloprotein studies using synchrotron-based (61)Ni Mössbauer spectroscopy, we examined the spectra of (61)Ni-substituted rubredoxin in reduced and oxidized forms, along with [Et4N]2[(61)Ni(SPh)4] as a model compound. For each of the above samples, a reasonable spectrum could be obtained in ∼1 d. Given that there is still room for considerable improvement in experimental sensitivity, synchrotron-based (61)Ni Mössbauer spectroscopy appears to be a promising alternative to measurements with radioactive sources.

61Ni synchrotron radiation-based Mössbauer spectroscopy of nickel-based nanoparticles with hexagonal structure

We measured the synchrotron-radiation (SR)-based Mössbauer spectra of Ni-based nanoparticles with a hexagonal structure that were synthesised by chemical reduction. To obtain Mössbauer spectra of the nanoparticles without ⁶¹Ni enrichment, we developed a measurement system for ⁶¹Ni SR-based Mössbauer absorption spectroscopy without X-ray windows between the ⁶¹Ni₈₄V₁₆ standard energy alloy and detector. The counting rate of the ⁶¹Ni nuclear resonant scattering in the system was enhanced by the detection of internal conversion electrons and the close proximity between the energy standard and the detector. The spectrum measured at 4 K revealed the internal magnetic field of the nanoparticles was 3.4 ± 0.9 T, corresponding to a Ni atomic magnetic moment of 0.3 Bohr magneton. This differs from the value of Ni₃C and the theoretically predicted value of hexagonal-close-packed (hcp)-Ni and suggested the nanoparticle possessed intermediate carbon content between hcp-Ni and Ni₃C of approximately 10 atomic % of Ni. The improved ⁶¹Ni Mössbauer absorption measurement system is also applicable to various Ni materials without ⁶¹Ni enrichment, such as Ni hydride nanoparticles.
