High-pressure synthesis and characterization of iridium trihydride

An algorithm for very high pressure molecular dynamics simulations

We describe a method to run simulations of ground or excited state dynamics under extremely high pressures. The method is based on the introduction of a fictitious ideal gas that exerts the required pressure on a molecular sample and is therefore called XP-GAS (eXtreme Pressure by Gas Atoms in a Sphere). The algorithm is most suitable for approximately spherical clusters of molecules described by quantum chemistry methods, Molecular Mechanics or mixed QM/MM approaches. We compare the results obtained by the algorithm here presented and by the XP-PCM approach, based on a continuum description of the environment. As a test case, we study the conformational dynamics of 1,3-butadiene either as an isolated molecule ("naked" butadiene) or embedded in a cluster of argon atoms, under pressures up to 15 GPa. Overall, our results show that the XP-GAS QM/MM simulation method is in good agreement with the XP-PCM QM/Continuum model (Cammi model) in describing the effect of the pressure on static properties as the equilibrium geometry of butadiene in the ground state. Furthermore, the comparison of XP-GAS simulations with naked butadiene and butadiene in argon shows the importance, for XP-GAS and related methods, of a realistic representation of the medium in modelling pressure effects.

Collapse of carbon nanotubes due to local high-pressure from van der Waals encapsulation

Van der Waals (vdW) assembly of low-dimensional materials has proven the capability of creating structures with on-demand properties. It is predicted that the vdW encapsulation can induce a local high-pressure of a few GPa, which will strongly modify the structure and property of trapped materials. Here, we report on the structural collapse of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) induced by the vdW encapsulation. By simply covering CNTs with a hexagonal boron nitride flake, most of the CNTs (≈77%) convert from a tubular structure to a collapsed flat structure. Regardless of their original diameters, all the collapsed CNTs exhibit a uniform height of ≈0.7 nm, which is roughly the thickness of bilayer graphene. Such structural collapse is further confirmed by Raman spectroscopy, which shows a prominent broadening and blue shift in the Raman G-peak. The vdW encapsulation-induced collapse of CNTs is fully captured by molecular dynamics simulations of the local vdW pressure. Further near-field optical characterization reveals a metal-semiconductor transition in accompany with the CNT structural collapse. Our study provides not only a convenient approach to generate local high-pressure for fundamental research, but also a collapsed-CNT semiconductor for nanoelectronic applications.

Laser heating system at the Extreme Conditions Beamline, P02.2, PETRA III

A laser heating system for samples confined in diamond anvil cells paired with in situ X-ray diffraction measurements at the Extreme Conditions Beamline of PETRA III is presented. The system features two independent laser configurations (on-axis and off-axis of the X-ray path) allowing for a broad range of experiments using different designs of diamond anvil cells. The power of the continuous laser source can be modulated for use in various pulsed laser heating or flash heating applications. An example of such an application is illustrated here on the melting curve of iron at megabar pressures. The optical path of the spectroradiometry measurements is simulated with ray-tracing methods in order to assess the level of present aberrations in the system and the results are compared with other systems, that are using simpler lens optics. Based on the ray-tracing the choice of the first achromatic lens and other aspects for accurate temperature measurements are evaluated.

Synthesis of Superconducting Cobalt Trihydride

The Co-H system has been investigated through high-pressure, high-temperature X-ray diffraction experiments combined with first-principles calculations. On compression of elemental cobalt in a hydrogen medium, we observe face-centered cubic cobalt hydride (CoH) and cobalt dihydride (CoH₂) above 33 GPa. Laser heating CoH₂ in a hydrogen matrix at 75 GPa to temperatures in excess of ∼800 K produces cobalt trihydride (CoH₃) which adopts a primitive structure. Density functional theory calculations support the stability of CoH₃. This phase is predicted to be thermodynamically stable at pressures above 18 GPa and to be a superconductor below 23 K. Theory predicts that this phase remains dynamically stable upon decompression above 11 GPa where it has a maximum T_c of 30 K.

Structural, mechanical and electronic properties and hardness of ionic vanadium dihydrides under pressure from first-principles computations

Based on a combination of the CALYPSO method for crystal structure prediction and first-principles calculations, we explore the crystal structures of VH2 under the pressure range of 0-300 GPa. The cubic Fm-3m phase with regular VH8 cubes is predicted to transform into orthorhombic Pnma structure with fascinating distorted VH9 tetrakaidecahedrons at 47.36 GPa. Both the Fm-3m phase at 0 GPa and the Pnma phase at 100 GPa are mechanically and dynamically stable, as verified with the calculations of elastic constants and phonon dispersions, respectively. Moreover, the calculated electronic band structure and density of states indicate both stable phases are metallic. Remarkably, the analyses of the Poisson's ratio, electron localization function (ELF) and Bader charge substantiate that both stable phases are ionic crystals on account of effective charges transferring from V atom to H. On the basis of the microscopic hardness model, the Fm-3m and Pnma crystals of VH2 are potentially incompressible and hard materials with the hardness values of 17.83 and 17.68 GPa, respectively.

Effect of the Inherent Structure of Rh Nanocrystals on the Hydriding Behavior under Pressure

Tailoring the inherent structure of materials is an effective way to improve the hydrogen storage capacity of metal materials. In this work, we report the effect of rhodium (Rh) nanocrystals (NCs) on the hydrogenation reaction. We found that Rh NCs could form rhodium monohydride (RhH) at a lower pressure than the bulk Rh because of its high specific surface area and structure defects. In addition, Rh NCs in the form of icosahedrons exhibited a much higher hydrogen absorption efficiency than Rh nanocubes. Furthermore, much smaller irregular Rh nanoparticles are even partially converted to RhH at lower pressure because of the nanosize effect. We thus believe that it is possible to design materials with excellent hydrogen storage properties under mild conditions.

Superconductivity with high hardness in Mo3C2

This work synthesized a high hardness and superconductive polycrystalline Mo₃C₂ material by the HPHT method. Mo₃C₂ exhibits superconductivity below 8.2 K and its hardness is far higher than that of the traditionally used superconductive materials.

High-Pressure Synthesis: A New Frontier in the Search for Next-Generation Intermetallic Compounds

The application of high pressure adds an additional dimension to chemical phase space, opening up an unexplored expanse bearing tremendous potential for discovery. Our continuing mission is to explore this new frontier, to seek out new intermetallic compounds and new solid-state bonding. Simple binary elemental systems, in particular those composed of pairs of elements that do not form compounds under ambient pressures, can yield novel crystalline phases under compression. Thus, high-pressure synthesis can provide access to solid-state compounds that cannot be formed with traditional thermodynamic methods. An emerging approach for the rapid exploration of composition-pressure-temperature phase space is the use of hand-held high-pressure devices known as diamond anvil cells (DACs). These devices were originally developed by geologists as a way to study minerals under conditions relevant to the earth's interior, but they possess a host of capabilities that make them ideal for high-pressure solid-state synthesis. Of particular importance, they offer the capability for in situ spectroscopic and diffraction measurements, thereby enabling continuous reaction monitoring-a powerful capability for solid-state synthesis. In this Account, we provide an overview of this approach in the context of research we have performed in the pursuit of new intermetallic compounds. We start with a discussion of pressure as a fundamental experimental variable that enables the formation of intermetallic compounds that cannot be isolated under ambient conditions. We then introduce the DAC apparatus and explain how it can be repurposed for use as a synthetic vessel with which to explore this phase space, going to extremes of pressure where no chemist has gone before. The remainder of the Account is devoted to discussions of recent experiments we have performed with this approach that have led to the discovery of novel intermetallic compounds in the Fe-Bi, Cu-Bi, and Ni-Bi systems, with a focus on the cutting-edge methods that made these experiments possible. We review the use of in situ laser heating at high pressure, which led to the discovery of FeBi₂, the first binary intermetallic compound in the Fe-Bi system. Our work in the Cu-Bi system is described in the context of in situ experiments carried out in the DAC to map its high-pressure phase space, which revealed two intermetallic phases (Cu₁₁Bi₇ and CuBi). Finally, we review the discovery of β-NiBi, a novel high-pressure phase in the Ni-Bi system. We hope that this Account will inspire the next generation of solid-state chemists to boldly explore high-pressure phase space.

Investigation of superconductivity in compressed vanadium hydrides

Aiming at finding new superconducting materials, we performed systematical simulations on phase diagrams, crystal structures, and electronic properties of vanadium hydrides under high pressures. The VH, VH₂, VH₃, and VH₅ species were found to be stable under high pressures; among these, VH₂ had previously been investigated. Moreover, all three novel stoichiometries showed a strong ionic character as a result of the charge transfer from V to H. The electron-phonon coupling calculations revealed the potentially superconductive nature of these vanadium hydrides, with estimated superconducting critical temperature (T_c) values of 6.5-10.7 K for R3[combining overline]m (VH), 8.0-1.6 K for Fm3[combining overline]m (VH₃), and 30.6-22.2 K for P6/mmm (VH₅) within the pressure range from 150 GPa to 250 GPa.

Optical Properties of Fluid Hydrogen at the Transition to a Conducting State

We use fast transient transmission and emission spectroscopies in the pulse laser heated diamond anvil cell to probe the energy-dependent optical properties of hydrogen at pressures of 10-150 GPa and temperatures up to 6000 K. Hydrogen is absorptive at visible to near-infrared wavelengths above a threshold temperature that decreases from 3000 K at 18 GPa to 1700 K at 110 GPa. Transmission spectra at 2400 K and 141 GPa indicate that the absorptive hydrogen is semiconducting or semimetallic in character, definitively ruling out a first-order insulator-metal transition in the studied pressure range.

Crystal structures and superconductivity of technetium hydrides under pressure

Guided by a simple strategy in search of new superconducting materials, we have performed extensive simulations on crystal structures and electronic properties of Tc–H compounds at high pressures.

The Extreme Conditions Beamline P02.2 and the Extreme Conditions Science Infrastructure at PETRA III

A detailed description is presented of the Extreme Conditions Beamline P02.2 for micro X-ray diffraction studies of matter at simultaneous high pressure and high/low temperatures at PETRA III, in Hamburg, Germany. This includes performance of the X-ray optics and instrumental resolution as well as an overview of the different sample environments available for high-pressure studies in the diamond anvil cell. Particularly emphasized are the high-brilliance and high-energy X-ray diffraction capabilities of the beamline in conjunction with the use of fast area detectors to conduct time-resolved compression studies in the millisecond time regime. Finally, the current capability of the Extreme Conditions Science Infrastructure to support high-pressure research at the Extreme Conditions Beamline and other PETRA III beamlines is described.

New iron hydrides under high pressure

The Fe-H system has been investigated by combined x-ray diffraction studies and total energy calculations at pressures up to 136 GPa. The experiments involve laser annealing of hydrogen-embedded iron in a diamond anvil cell. Two new FeHx compounds, with x∼2 and x=3, are discovered at 67 and 86 GPa, respectively. Their crystal structures are identified (unit cell and Fe positional parameters from x-ray diffraction, H positional parameters from ab initio calculations) as tetragonal with space group I4/mmm for FeH(∼2) and as simple cubic with space group Pm3m for FeH3. Large metastability regimes are observed that allowed to measure the P(V) equation of state at room temperature of FeH, FeH(∼2), and FeH3.
