Decay of fermionic quasiparticles in one-dimensional quantum liquids

Quasiparticle Energy Relaxation in a Gas of One-Dimensional Fermions with Coulomb Interaction

We consider a system of charged one-dimensional spin-1/2 fermions at low temperature. We study how the energy of a highly excited quasiparticle (or hole) relaxes toward the chemical potential in the regime of weak interactions. The dominant relaxation processes involve collisions with two other fermions. We find a dramatic enhancement of the relaxation rate at low energies, with the rate scaling as the inverse sixth power of the excitation energy. This behavior is caused by the long-range nature of the Coulomb interaction.

Superdiffusive transport of energy in one-dimensional metals

Metals in one spatial dimension are described at the lowest energy scales by the Luttinger liquid theory. It is well understood that this free theory, and even interacting integrable models, can support ballistic transport of conserved quantities including energy. In contrast, realistic one-dimensional metals, even without disorder, contain integrability-breaking interactions that are expected to lead to thermalization and conventional diffusive linear response. We argue that the expansion of energy when such a nonintegrable Luttinger liquid is locally heated above its ground state shows superdiffusive behavior (i.e., spreading of energy that is intermediate between diffusion and ballistic propagation), by combining an analytical anomalous diffusion model with numerical matrix-product-state calculations on a specific perturbed spinless fermion chain. Different metals will have different scaling exponents and shapes in their energy spreading, but the superdiffusive behavior is stable and should be visible in time-resolved experiments.

Viscous Dissipation in One-Dimensional Quantum Liquids

We develop a theory of viscous dissipation in one-dimensional single-component quantum liquids at low temperatures. Such liquids are characterized by a single viscosity coefficient, the bulk viscosity. We show that for a generic interaction between the constituent particles this viscosity diverges in the zero-temperature limit. In the special case of integrable models, the viscosity is infinite at any temperature, which can be interpreted as a breakdown of the hydrodynamic description. Our consideration is applicable to all single-component Galilean-invariant one-dimensional quantum liquids, regardless of the statistics of the constituent particles and the interaction strength.

Excitation spectrum of the Lieb-Liniger model

We study the integrable model of one-dimensional bosons with contact repulsion. In the limit of weak interaction, we use the microscopic hydrodynamic theory to obtain the excitation spectrum. The statistics of quasiparticles changes with the increase of momentum. At lowest momenta good quasiparticles are fermions, while at higher momenta they are Bogoliubov bosons, in accordance with recent studies. In the limit of strong interaction, we analyze the exact solution and find exact results for the spectrum in terms of the asymptotic series. Those results undoubtedly suggest that fermionic quasiparticle excitations actually exist at all momenta for moderate and strong interaction and also at lowest momenta for arbitrary interaction. Moreover, at strong interaction we find highly accurate analytical results for several relevant quantities of the Lieb-Liniger model.

Kinetics of mobile impurities and correlation functions in one-dimensional superfluids at finite temperature

We examine the hydrodynamic approach to dynamical correlations in one-dimensional superfluids near integrability and calculate the characteristic time scale, τ, beyond which this approach is valid. For time scales shorter than τ, hydrodynamics fails, and we develop an approach based on kinetics of fermionic quasiparticles described as mobile impurities. New universal results for the dynamical structure factor relevant to experiments in ultracold atomic gases are obtained.
