Suris tetrons: possible spectroscopic evidence for four-particle optical excitations of a two-dimensional electron gas

Doping-control of excitons and magnetism in few-layer CrSBr

Magnetism in two-dimensional materials reveals phenomena distinct from bulk magnetic crystals, with sensitivity to charge doping and electric fields in monolayer and bilayer van der Waals magnet CrI3. Within the class of layered magnets, semiconducting CrSBr stands out by featuring stability under ambient conditions, correlating excitons with magnetic order and thus providing strong magnon-exciton coupling, and exhibiting peculiar magneto-optics of exciton-polaritons. Here, we demonstrate that both exciton and magnetic transitions in bilayer and trilayer CrSBr are sensitive to voltage-controlled field-effect charging, exhibiting bound exciton-charge complexes and doping-induced metamagnetic transitions. Moreover, we demonstrate how these unique properties enable optical probes of local magnetic order, visualizing magnetic domains of competing phases across metamagnetic transitions induced by magnetic field or electrostatic doping. Our work identifies few-layer CrSBr as a rich platform for exploring collaborative effects of charge, optical excitations, and magnetism.

Observation of Rydberg moiré excitons

Rydberg excitons, the solid-state counterparts of Rydberg atoms, have sparked considerable interest with regard to the harnessing of their quantum application potentials, but realizing their spatial confinement and manipulation poses a major challenge. Lately, the rise of two-dimensional moiré superlattices with highly tunable periodic potentials provides a possible pathway. Here, we experimentally demonstrate this capability through the spectroscopic evidence of Rydberg moiré excitons (X_RM), which are moiré-trapped Rydberg excitons in monolayer semiconductor tungsten diselenide adjacent to twisted bilayer graphene. In the strong coupling regime, the X_RM manifest as multiple energy splittings, pronounced red shift, and narrowed linewidth in the reflectance spectra, highlighting their charge-transfer character wherein electron-hole separation is enforced by strongly asymmetric interlayer Coulomb interactions. Our findings establish the excitonic Rydberg states as candidates for exploitation in quantum technologies.

Diffusion of Excitons in a Two-Dimensional Fermi Sea of Free Charges

Propagation of light-emitting quasiparticles is of central importance across the fields of condensed matter physics and nanomaterials science. We experimentally demonstrate diffusion of excitons in the presence of a continuously tunable Fermi sea of free charge carriers in a monolayer semiconductor. Light emission from tightly bound exciton states in electrically gated WSe₂ monolayer is detected using spatially and temporally resolved microscopy. The measurements reveal a nonmonotonic dependence of the exciton diffusion coefficient on the charge carrier density in both electron and hole doped regimes. Supported by analytical theory describing exciton-carrier interactions in a dissipative system, we identify distinct regimes of elastic scattering and quasiparticle formation determining exciton diffusion. The crossover region exhibits a highly unusual behavior of an increasing diffusion coefficient with increasing carrier densities. Temperature-dependent diffusion measurements further reveal characteristic signatures of freely propagating excitonic complexes dressed by free charges with effective mobilities up to 3 × 10³ cm²/(V s).

Six-Body and Eight-Body Exciton States in Monolayer WSe_{2}

In the archetypal monolayer semiconductor WSe_{2}, the distinct ordering of spin-polarized valleys (low-energy pockets) in the conduction band allows for studies of not only simple neutral excitons and charged excitons (i.e., trions), but also more complex many-body states that are predicted at higher electron densities. We discuss magneto-optical measurements of electron-rich WSe_{2} monolayers and interpret the spectral lines that emerge at high electron doping as optical transitions of six-body exciton states ("hexcitons") and eight-body exciton states ("oxcitons"). These many-body states emerge when a photoexcited electron-hole pair interacts simultaneously with multiple Fermi seas, each having distinguishable spin and valley quantum numbers. In addition, we explain the relations between dark trions and satellite optical transitions of hexcitons in the photoluminescence spectrum.

Characteristics of multi-mode lasing in cesium lead bromide perovskite microwires with an isosceles right triangle cross-section

The CsPbBr₃ microwires with unique isosceles right triangle cross-sections are commonly observed via chemical vapor deposition method. In this work, we study the correlations between measured multi-mode lasing behaviors and the simulation of the mode patterns inside the triangular-rod microcavity. We confirm that lasing action with higher-order transverse modes can well sustain, even when these modes experience large optical loss due to the isosceles triangle cross-section. By comparing the experimental and simulation results, the higher-order transverse modes tend to show up prior to the fundamental transverse modes for wider microwires. We attribute this behavior to the nonuniform field distribution caused by the high absorption efficiency of CsPbBr₃. We also elaborate on the difficulties to sustain the whispering gallery mode in the CsPbBr₃ triangular-rod microcavity, which implies that the lateral dimension and geometry of the cavity should be considered carefully for the future design of low threshold wire-based laser devices.

Exciton-polaron Rydberg states in monolayer MoSe2 and WSe2

Exciton polaron is a hypothetical many-body quasiparticle that involves an exciton dressed with a polarized electron-hole cloud in the Fermi sea. It has been evoked to explain the excitonic spectra of charged monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides, but the studies were limited to the ground state. Here we measure the reflection and photoluminescence of monolayer MoSe₂ and WSe₂ gating devices encapsulated by boron nitride. We observe gate-tunable exciton polarons associated with the 1 s–3 s exciton Rydberg states. The ground and excited exciton polarons exhibit comparable energy redshift (15~30 meV) from their respective bare excitons. The robust excited states contradict the trion picture because the trions are expected to dissociate in the excited states. When the Fermi sea expands, we observe increasingly severe suppression and steep energy shift from low to high exciton-polaron Rydberg states. Their gate-dependent energy shifts go beyond the trion description but match our exciton-polaron theory. Our experiment and theory demonstrate the exciton-polaron nature of both the ground and excited excitonic states in charged monolayer MoSe₂ and WSe₂.

Autoionization and Dressing of Excited Excitons by Free Carriers in Monolayer WSe_{2}

We experimentally demonstrate dressing of the excited exciton states by a continuously tunable Fermi sea of free charge carriers in a monolayer semiconductor. It represents an unusual scenario of two-particle excitations of charged excitons previously inaccessible in conventional material systems. We identify excited state trions, accurately determine their binding energies in the zero-density limit for both electron- and hole-doped regimes, and observe emerging many-body phenomena at elevated doping. Combining experiment and theory we gain access to the intra-exciton coupling facilitated by the interaction with free charge carriers. We provide evidence for a process of autoionization for quasiparticles, a unique scattering pathway available for excited states in atomic systems. Finally, we demonstrate a complete transfer of the optical transition strength from the excited excitons to dressed Fermi-polaron states as well as the associated light emission from their nonequilibrium populations.

Optical properties of charged excitons in two-dimensional semiconductors

Strong Coulomb interaction in atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides makes these systems particularly promising for studies of excitonic physics. Of special interest are the manifestations of the charged excitons, also known as trions, in the optical properties of two-dimensional semiconductors. In order to describe the optical response of such a system, the exciton interaction with resident electrons should be explicitly taken into account. In this paper, we demonstrate that this can be done in both the trion (essentially, few-particle) and Fermi-polaron (many-body) approaches, which produce equivalent results, provided that the electron density is sufficiently low and the trion binding energy is much smaller than the exciton one. Here, we consider the oscillator strengths of the optical transitions related to the charged excitons, fine structure of trions, and Zeeman effect, as well as photoluminescence of trions illustrating the applicability of both few-particle and many-body models.

Polaron Polaritons in the Integer and Fractional Quantum Hall Regimes

Elementary quasiparticles in a two-dimensional electron system can be described as exciton polarons since electron-exciton interactions ensures dressing of excitons by Fermi-sea electron-hole pair excitations. A relevant open question is the modification of this description when the electrons occupy flat bands and electron-electron interactions become prominent. Here, we perform cavity spectroscopy of a two-dimensional electron system in the strong coupling regime, where polariton resonances carry signatures of strongly correlated quantum Hall phases. By measuring the evolution of the polariton splitting under an external magnetic field, we demonstrate the modification of polaron dressing that we associate with filling factor dependent electron-exciton interactions.
