Identifying a bath-induced bose liquid in interacting spin-boson models

Dissipation-Induced Order: The S=1/2 Quantum Spin Chain Coupled to an Ohmic Bath

We consider an S=1/2 antiferromagnetic quantum Heisenberg chain where each site is coupled to an independent bosonic bath with ohmic dissipation. The coupling to the bath preserves the global SO(3) spin symmetry. Using large-scale, approximation-free quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we show that any finite coupling to the bath suffices to stabilize long-range antiferromagnetic order. This is in stark contrast to the isolated Heisenberg chain where spontaneous breaking of the SO(3) symmetry is forbidden by the Mermin-Wagner theorem. A linear spin-wave theory analysis confirms that the memory of the bath and the concomitant retarded interaction stabilize the order. For the Heisenberg chain, the ohmic bath is a marginal perturbation so that exponentially large system sizes are required to observe long-range order at small couplings. Below this length scale, our numerics is dominated by a crossover regime where spin correlations show different power-law behaviors in space and time. We discuss the experimental relevance of this crossover phenomena.

Dissipative Majorana Quantum Wires

In this paper, we formulate and quantitatively examine the effect of dissipation on topological systems. We use a specific model of Kitaev quantum wire with an onsite Ohmic dissipation and perform a numerically exact method to investigate the effect of dissipation on the topological features of the system (e.g., the Majorana edge mode) at zero temperature. We find that even though the topological phase is robust against weak dissipation as it is supposed to be, it will eventually be destroyed by sufficiently strong dissipation via either a continuous quantum phase transition or a crossover depending on the symmetry of the system. The dissipation-driven quantum criticality has also been discussed.

Directed-Loop Quantum Monte Carlo Method for Retarded Interactions

The directed-loop quantum Monte Carlo method is generalized to the case of retarded interactions. Using the path integral, fermion-boson or spin-boson models are mapped to actions with retarded interactions by analytically integrating out the bosons. This yields an exact algorithm that combines the highly efficient loop updates available in the stochastic series expansion representation with the advantages of avoiding a direct sampling of the bosons. The application to electron-phonon models reveals that the method overcomes the previously detrimental issues of long autocorrelation times and exponentially decreasing acceptance rates. For example, the resulting dramatic speedup allows us to investigate the Peierls quantum phase transition on chains of up to 1282 sites.

Mechanistic Insights into Ethylene Transformations on Ir(111) by Density Functional Calculations and Microkinetic Modeling

Ethylidyne, ethane, and carbon monomer formations from ethylene over Ir(111) at different coverages are investigated using density functional theory methods. Two possible reaction mechanisms for ethylidyne formation are investigated. The calculations show that vinyl prefers the dehydrogenation to yield vinylidene (M2) over the hydrogenation to produce ethylidene (M1) kinetically and thermodynamically at 1/9 (1/3) ML. Ethylidyne formation could be a competitive side reaction of ethylene hydrogenation, however, the ethylidyne species does not directly participate in the ethylene hydrogenation mechanism. The mechanism for C monomer formation is also studied. Microkinetic modeling shows that the ethylene hydrogenation reactivity decreases in the sequence Ir(111)>Rh(111)>Pd(111)>Pt(111) under typical hydrogenation conditions. The catalytic activity of ethylene hydrogenation decreases with increased stability of ethylene adsorption and reaction barrier of the rate-limiting step.

Rescuing a Quantum Phase Transition with Quantum Noise

We show that placing a quantum system in contact with an environment can enhance non-Fermi-liquid correlations, rather than destroy quantum effects, as is typical. The system consists of two quantum dots in series with two leads; the highly resistive leads couple charge flow through the dots to the electromagnetic environment, the source of quantum noise. While the charge transport inhibits a quantum phase transition, the quantum noise reduces charge transport and restores the transition. We find a non-Fermi-liquid intermediate fixed point for all strengths of the noise. For strong noise, it is similar to the intermediate fixed point of the two-impurity Kondo model.
