Search for the K_{L}→π^{0}νν[over ¯] Decay at the J-PARC KOTO Experiment. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2025; 134:081802. [PMID: 40085872 DOI: 10.1103/physrevlett.134.081802] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 11/19/2024] [Accepted: 01/27/2025] [Indexed: 03/16/2025]
Abstract
We performed a search for the K_{L}→π^{0}νν[over ¯] decay using the data taken in 2021 at the J-PARC KOTO experiment. With newly installed counters and new analysis method, the expected background was suppressed to 0.252±0.055_{stat} _{-0.067^{syst}}^{+0.052}. With a single event sensitivity of (9.33±0.06_{stat}±0.84_{syst})×10^{-10}, no events were observed in the signal region. An upper limit on the branching fraction for the decay was set to be 2.2×10^{-9} at the 90% confidence level (C.L.), which improved the previous upper limit from KOTO by a factor of 1.4. With the same data, a search for K_{L}→π^{0}X^{0} was also performed, where X^{0} is an invisible boson with a mass ranging from 1 to 260 MeV/c^{2}. For X^{0} with a mass of 135 MeV/c^{2}, an upper limit on the branching fraction of K_{L}→π^{0}X^{0} was set to be 1.6×10^{-9} at the 90% C.L.

New physics searches at kaon and hyperon factories. REPORTS ON PROGRESS IN PHYSICS. PHYSICAL SOCIETY (GREAT BRITAIN) 2023; 86:016201. Abstract
Rare meson decays are among the most sensitive probes of both heavy and light new physics. Among them, new physics searches using kaons benefit from their small total decay widths and the availability of very large datasets. On the other hand, useful complementary information is provided by hyperon decay measurements. We summarize the relevant phenomenological models and the status of the searches in a comprehensive list of kaon and hyperon decay channels. We identify new search strategies for under-explored signatures, and demonstrate that the improved sensitivities from current and next-generation experiments could lead to a qualitative leap in the exploration of light dark sectors.

Abstract
The rare decay K_{L}→π^{0}νν[over ¯] was studied with the dataset taken at the J-PARC KOTO experiment in 2016, 2017, and 2018. With a single event sensitivity of (7.20±0.05_{stat}±0.66_{syst})×10^{-10}, three candidate events were observed in the signal region. After unveiling them, contaminations from K^{±} and scattered K_{L} decays were studied, and the total number of background events was estimated to be 1.22±0.26. We conclude that the number of observed events is statistically consistent with the background expectation. For this dataset, we set an upper limit of 4.9×10^{-9} on the branching fraction of K_{L}→π^{0}νν[over ¯] at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract
We show that the recent excess presented by KOTO in their search for K_{L}→π^{0}νν[over ¯] may be due to weakly coupled scalars produced from Kaon decays. We study two concrete realizations, the minimal Higgs portal and a hadrophilic scalar model, and demonstrate that they can explain the observed events while satisfying existing limits. The simplicity of these models, and their possible relations to interesting UV constructions, provides strong theoretical motivation for a new physics interpretation of the KOTO data.

Abstract
The KOTO experiment recently reported four candidate events in the signal region of K_{L}→π^{0}νν[over ¯] search, where the standard model only expects 0.10±0.02 events. If confirmed, this requires physics beyond the standard model to enhance the signal. We examine various new physics interpretations of the result including these: (1) heavy new physics boosting the standard model signal, (2) reinterpretation of "νν[over ¯]" as a new light long-lived particle, or (3) reinterpretation of the whole signal as the production of a new light long-lived particle at the fixed target. We study the above explanations in the context of a generalized new physics Grossman-Nir bound coming from the K^{+}→π^{+}νν[over ¯] decay, bounded by data from the E949 and the NA62 experiments.

Abstract
A search for the rare decay K_{L}→π^{0}νν[over ¯] was performed. With the data collected in 2015, corresponding to 2.2×10^{19} protons on target, a single event sensitivity of (1.30±0.01_{stat}±0.14_{syst})×10^{-9} was achieved and no candidate events were observed. We set an upper limit of 3.0×10^{-9} for the branching fraction of K_{L}→π^{0}νν[over ¯] at the 90% confidence level (C.L.), which improved the previous limit by almost an order of magnitude. An upper limit for K_{L}→π^{0}X^{0} was also set as 2.4×10^{-9} at the 90% C.L., where X^{0} is an invisible boson with a mass of 135 MeV/c^{2}.
