Thermally mediated mechanism to enhance magnetoelectric coupling in multiferroics

A theoretical strategy for pressure-driven ferroelectric transition associated with critical behavior and magnetoelectric coupling in organic multiferroics

In organic multiferroics, the charge or spin coupled to the lattice induces lattice symmetry breaking, which is responsible for the ferroelectric (FE) transition. We propose a quantum spin model to describe the ferroelectricity of organic multiferroics, in which the pressure-driven spin-lattice coupling is controlled both by a jump function and a pressure power function. The T-p phase diagram shows different scaling relationships at low and high pressure regions, respectively, which is in accordance with the experimental observation. It is found that the pressure can not only enhance the FE polarization, but also enhance the transition temperature T_c as well as the electrocaloric effect (ECE). The electrocaloric critical scaling laws are proposed to verify the order and universality of the FE transition based on the Banerjee and Franco's criteria. In addition, we propose a temperature mediated mechanism within an isentropic process based on the ECE combined with the pyromagnetic effect, together with multiple physically (magnetic field and pressure jointly) controlled means, to enhance the magnetoelectric coupling around room-temperature, which will provide thermodynamic and quantum controlled means for realizing multi-state logic memory.

Multicaloric effect in a multiferroic composite of Gd5(Si,Ge)4 microparticles embedded into a ferroelectric PVDF matrix

The coupling between electric, magnetic and elastic features in multiferroic materials is an emerging field in materials science, with important applications on alternative solid-state cooling technologies, energy harvesting and sensors/actuators. Using a simple solvent casting technique, the formation and stabilization of PVDF electroactive phases are improved when the filler content increases from 2 to 12 weight fraction (wt.%). This effect greatly contributes to the magnetoelectric (ME) coupling, with the ME coefficient \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$${\alpha }_{ME}$$\end{document}αME increasing from 0.3 V/cm.Oe to 2.2 V/cm.Oe, by increasing the amount of magnetic material. In addition, magnetic measurements revealed that the ME-coupling has influenced the magnetocaloric effect via a contribution from the electroactive polymer and hence leading to a multicaloric effect. These results contribute to the development of multifunctional systems for novel technologies.

A theoretical insight into an isentropic strategy for enhancing magnetoelectric coupling of organic multiferroics

The cross-coupling between magnetic and ferroelectric orders in spin-driven organic multiferroics provides great potential for realizing multi-state logic memory. Creating strong magnetoelectric coupling around room-temperature is the key to eliminate the main roadblock for practical application. Herein, quantum correlation controlled means are employed to tune the transition temperature TC = 300 K, as the optimal operating temperature. After that, based on the magnetocaloric or electrocaloric effect, a temperature mediated mechanism is proposed to enhance magnetoelectric coupling within an isentropic rather than an isothermal process. Furthermore, a moderate magnetic field combined with a relatively weak electric field can jointly control and dramatically enhance the isentropic magnetoelectric coupling around room-temperature.

Thermodynamics of multicaloric effects in multiferroic materials: application to metamagnetic shape-memory alloys and ferrotoroidics

We develop a general thermodynamic framework to investigate multicaloric effects in multiferroic materials. This is applied to the study of both magnetostructural and magnetoelectric multiferroics. Landau models with appropriate interplay between the corresponding ferroic properties (order parameters) are proposed for metamagnetic shape-memory and ferrotoroidic materials, which, respectively, belong to the two classes of multiferroics. For each ferroic property, caloric effects are quantified by the isothermal entropy change induced by the application of the corresponding thermodynamically conjugated field. The multicaloric effect is obtained as a function of the two relevant applied fields in each class of multiferroics. It is further shown that multicaloric effects comprise the corresponding contributions from caloric effects associated with each ferroic property and the cross-contribution arising from the interplay between these ferroic properties.This article is part of the themed issue 'Taking the temperature of phase transitions in cool materials'.
