Predicted Quantum Topological Hall Effect and Noncoplanar Antiferromagnetism in K_{0.5}RhO_{2}

Crystal Thermal Transport in Altermagnetic RuO_{2}

We demonstrate the emergence of a pronounced thermal transport in the recently discovered class of magnetic materials-altermagnets. From symmetry arguments and first-principles calculations performed for the showcase altermagnet, RuO_{2}, we uncover that crystal Nernst and crystal thermal Hall effects in this material are very large and strongly anisotropic with respect to the Néel vector. We find the large crystal thermal transport to originate from three sources of Berry's curvature in momentum space: the Weyl fermions due to crossings between well-separated bands, the strong spin-flip pseudonodal surfaces, and the weak spin-flip ladder transitions, defined by transitions among very weakly spin-split states of similar dispersion crossing the Fermi surface. Moreover, we reveal that the anomalous thermal and electrical transport coefficients in RuO_{2} are linked by an extended Wiedemann-Franz law in a temperature range much wider than expected for conventional magnets. Our results suggest that altermagnets may assume a leading role in realizing concepts in spin caloritronics not achievable with ferromagnets or antiferromagnets.

Chern-Insulator Phase in Antiferromagnets

The long-sought Chern insulators that manifest a quantum anomalous Hall effect are typically considered to occur in ferromagnets. Here, we theoretically predict the realizabilities of Chern insulators in antiferromagnets, in which the magnetic sublattices are connected by symmetry operators enforcing zero net magnetic moment. Our symmetry analysis provides comprehensive magnetic layer point groups that allow antiferromagnetic (AFM) Chern insulators, revealing that an in-plane magnetic configuration is required. Followed by first-principles calculations, such design principles naturally lead to two categories of material candidates, exemplified by monolayer RbCr4S8 and bilayer Mn3Sn with collinear and noncollinear AFM orders, respectively. We further show that the Chern number could be tuned by slight ferromagnetic canting as an effective pivot. Our work elucidates the nature of the Chern-insulator phase in AFM systems, paving a new avenue for designing quantum anomalous Hall insulators with the integration of nondissipative transport and the promising advantages of the AFM order.

Topological Phase and Quantum Anomalous Hall Effect in Ferromagnetic Transition-Metal Dichalcogenides Monolayer 1T-VSe2

Magnetic two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals materials have attracted tremendous attention because of their high potential in spintronics. In particular, the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect in magnetic 2D layers shows a very promising prospect for hosting Majorana zero modes at the topologically protected edge states in proximity to superconductors. However, the QAH effect has not yet been experimentally realized in monolayer systems to date. In this work, we study the electronic structures and topological properties of the 2D ferromagnetic transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMD) monolayer 1T−VSe2 by first-principles calculations with the Heyd–Scuseria–Ernzerhof (HSE) functional. We find that the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) opens a continuous band gap at the magnetic Weyl-like crossing point hosting the quantum anomalous Hall effect with Chern number C=2. Moreover, we demonstrate the topologically protected edge states and intrinsic (spin) Hall conductivity in this magnetic 2D TMD system. Our results indicate that 1T−VSe2 monolayer serves as a stoichiometric quantum anomalous Hall material.

Non-Collinear Orbital-induced Planar Quantum Anomalous Hall Effect

Based on the 2D star lattice with noncollinear orbital, we present an intriguing six-band tight-binding model for planar quantum anomalous Hall effect (PQAHE) with in-plane magnetization. Depending on the orientation of the noncollinear orbital, the characterized Dirac-, Kagome-, and Four-band are all realizable. Moreover, including the intrinsic spin-orbital coupling, a topological phase diagram versus angle of both in-plane magnetization and noncollinear orbital is mapped out, showing a tunable PQAHE with Chern number of either +1 or -1. Most remarkably, using first-principles calculations, this exact model of PQAHE is identified in an experimentally synthesized 2D metal-organic framework (MOF) of Pr₂(C₆O₄Cl₂)₃. These notable results not only demonstrate the significance of noncollinear orbital for designing PQAHE but also provide a MOF platform for its realization, greatly enriching the fundamental topological physics and extending the candidate topological materials.

Topological magneto-optical effects and their quantization in noncoplanar antiferromagnets

Reflecting the fundamental interactions of polarized light with magnetic matter, magneto-optical effects are well known since more than a century. The emergence of these phenomena is commonly attributed to the interplay between exchange splitting and spin-orbit coupling in the electronic structure of magnets. Using theoretical arguments, we demonstrate that topological magneto-optical effects can arise in noncoplanar antiferromagnets due to the finite scalar spin chirality, without any reference to exchange splitting or spin-orbit coupling. We propose spectral integrals of certain magneto-optical quantities that uncover the unique topological nature of the discovered effect. We also find that the Kerr and Faraday rotation angles can be quantized in insulating topological antiferromagnets in the low-frequency limit, owing to nontrivial global properties that manifest in quantum topological magneto-optical effects. Although the predicted topological and quantum topological magneto-optical effects are fundamentally distinct from conventional light-matter interactions, they can be measured by readily available experimental techniques.

Spin-Orientation-Dependent Topological States in Two-Dimensional Antiferromagnetic NiTl2S4 Monolayers

The topological states of matter arising from the nontrivial magnetic configuration provide a better understanding of physical properties and functionalities of solid materials. Such studies benefit from the active control of spin orientation in any solid, which is known to take place rarely in the two-dimensional (2D) limit. Here we demonstrate by the first-principles calculations that spin-orientation-dependent topological states can appear in the geometrically frustrated monolayer antiferromagnet (AFM). Different topological states including the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect and time-reversal-symmetry (TRS) broken quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect can be obtained by changing the spin orientation in the NiTl₂S₄ monolayer. Remarkably, the dilated nc-AFM NiTl₂S₄ monolayer gives birth to the QAH effect with the hitherto reported largest number of quantized conducting channels (Chern number [Formula: see text] = -4) in 2D materials. Interestingly, under tunable chemical potential, the nc-AFM NiTl₂S₄ monolayer hosts a novel state supporting the coexistence of QAH and TRS broken QSH effects with a Chern number of [Formula: see text] = 3 and a spin Chern number of [Formula: see text] = 1. This work manifests a promising concept and material realization of topological spintronics in 2D antiferromagnets by manipulating their spin degree of freedom.

Light-Induced Type-II Band Inversion and Quantum Anomalous Hall State in Monolayer FeSe

Coupling a quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) state with a superconducting state offers an attractive approach to detect the signature alluding to a topological superconducting state [Q. L. He et al., Science 357, 294 (2017)SCIEAS0036-807510.1126/science.aag2792], but its explanation could be clouded by disorder effects in magnetic doped QAH materials. On the other hand, an antiferromagnetic (AFM) quantum spin Hall (QSH) state is identified in the well-known high-temperature 2D superconductor of monolayer FeSe [Z. F. Wang et al., Nat. Mater. 15, 968 (2016)NMAACR1476-112210.1038/nmat4686]. Here, we report a light-induced type-II band inversion (BI) and a QSH-to-QAH phase transition in the monolayer FeSe. Depending on the handedness of light, a spin-tunable QAH state with a high Chern number of ±2 is realized. In contrast to the conventional type-I BI resulting from intrinsic spin-orbital coupling (SOC), which inverts the band an odd number of times and respects time reversal symmetry, the type-II BI results from a light-induced handedness-dependent effective SOC, which inverts the band an even number of times and does not respect time reversal symmetry. The interplay between these two SOC terms makes the spin-up and -down bands of an AFM QSH state respond oppositely to a circularly polarized light, leading to the type-II BI and an exotic topological phase transition. Our finding affords an exciting opportunity to detect Majorana fermions in one single material without magnetic doping.

Magnon Hall effect without Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

Topological magnon bands and magnon Hall effect in insulating collinear ferromagnets are induced by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) even at zero magnetic field. In the geometrically frustrated star lattice, a coplanar/noncollinear [Formula: see text] magnetic ordering may be present due to spin frustration. This magnetic structure, however, does not exhibit topological magnon effects even with DMI in contrast to collinear ferromagnets. We show that a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the star plane induces a non-coplanar spin configuration with nonzero spin scalar chirality, which provides topological effects without the need of DMI. The non-coplanar spin texture originates from the topology of the spin configurations and does not need the presence of DMI or magnetic ordering, which suggests that this phenomenon may be present in the chiral spin liquid phases of frustrated magnetic systems. We propose that these anomalous topological magnon effects can be accessible in polymeric iron (III) acetate-a star-lattice antiferromagnet with both spin frustration and long-range magnetic ordering.
