Shortcuts to adiabaticity for Lévy processes in harmonic traps

Lévy stochastic processes, with noise distributed according to a Lévy stable distribution, are ubiquitous in science. Focusing on the case of a particle trapped in an external harmonic potential, we address the problem of finding "shortcuts to adiabaticity": After the system is prepared in a given initial stationary state, we search for time-dependent protocols for the driving external potential, such that a given final state is reached in a given, finite time. These techniques, usually employed for stochastic processes with additive Gaussian noise, are typically based on a inverse-engineering approach allowing to find exact analytical solutions for the required protocol. We generalize the approach to the wider class of Lévy stochastic processes, both in the overdamped and (for pure translations) in the underdamped regime, by finding exact equations for the relevant characteristic functions in Fourier space.

Wave transmission and its universal fluctuations in one-dimensional systems with Lévy-like disorder: Schrödinger, Klein-Gordon, and Dirac equations

We investigate the propagation of waves in one-dimensional systems with Lévy-type disorder. We perform a complete analysis of nonrelativistic and relativistic wave transmission submitted to potential barriers whose width, separation, or both follow Lévy distributions characterized by an exponent 0<α<1. For the first two cases, where one of the parameters is fixed, nonrelativistic and relativistic waves present anomalous localization, 〈T〉∝L^{-α}. However, for the latter case, in which both parameters follow a Lévy distribution, nonrelativistic and relativistic waves present a transition between anomalous and standard localization as the incidence energy increases relative to the barrier height. Moreover, we obtain the localization diagram delimiting anomalous and standard localization regimes, in terms of incidence angle and energy. Finally, we verify that transmission fluctuations, characterized by its standard deviation, are universal, independent of barrier architecture, wave equation type, incidence energy, and angle, further extending earlier studies on electronic localization.

Lévy Flights and Hydrodynamic Superdiffusion on the Dirac Cone of Graphene

We show that the hydrodynamic collision processes of graphene electrons at the neutrality point can be described in terms of a Fokker-Planck equation with a fractional derivative, corresponding to a Lévy flight in momentum space. Thus, electron-electron collisions give rise to frequent small-angle scattering processes that are interrupted by rare large-angle events. The latter give rise to superdiffusive dynamics of collective excitations. We argue that such superdiffusive dynamics is of more general importance to the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of quantum-critical systems.

Dirac wave transmission in Lévy-disordered systems

We investigate the propagation of electronic waves described by the Dirac equation subject to a Lévy-type disorder distribution. Our numerical calculations, based on the transfer matrix method, in a system with a distribution of potential barriers show that it presents a phase transition from anomalous to standard to anomalous localization as the incidence energy increases. In contrast, electronic waves described by the Schrödinger equation do not present such transitions. Moreover, we obtain the phase diagram delimiting anomalous and standard localization regimes, in the form of an incidence angle versus incidence energy diagram, and argue that transitions can also be characterized by the behavior of the dispersion of the transmission. We attribute this transition to an abrupt reduction in the transmittance of the system when the incidence angle is higher than a critical value which induces a decrease in the transmission fluctuations.

Interaction-disorder-driven characteristic momentum in graphene, approach of multi-body distribution functions

Multi-point probability measures along with the dielectric function of Dirac Fermions in mono-layer graphene containing particle-particle and white-noise (out-plane) disorder interactions on an equal footing in the Thomas-Fermi-Dirac approximation is investigated. By calculating the one-body carrier density probability measure of the graphene sheet, we show that the density fluctuation (ζ-1) is related to the disorder strength (ni), the interaction parameter (rs) and the average density ([Formula: see text]) via the relation [Formula: see text] for which [Formula: see text] leads to strong density inhomogeneities, i.e. electron-hole puddles (EHPs), in agreement with the previous works. The general equation governing the two-body distribution probability is obtained and analyzed. We present the analytical solution for some limits which is used for calculating density-density response function. We show that the resulting function shows power-law behaviors in terms of ζ with fractional exponents which are reported. The disorder-averaged polarization operator is shown to be a decreasing function of momentum like ordinary 2D parabolic band systems. It is seen that a disorder-driven momentum qch emerges in the system which controls the behaviors of the screened potential. We show that in small densities an instability occurs in which imaginary part of the dielectric function becomes negative and the screened potential changes sign. Corresponding to this instability, some oscillations in charge density along with a screening-anti-screening transition are observed. These effects become dominant in very low densities, strong disorders and strong interactions, the state in which EHPs appear. The total charge probability measure is another quantity which has been investigated in this paper. The resulting equation is analytically solved for large carrier densities, which admits the calculation of arbitrary-point correlation function.

Anomalous transport effects on switching currents of graphene-based Josephson junctions

We explore the effect of noise on the ballistic graphene-based small Josephson junctions in the framework of the resistively and capacitively shunted model. We use the non-sinusoidal current-phase relation specific for graphene layers partially covered by superconducting electrodes. The noise induced escapes from the metastable states, when the external bias current is ramped, given the switching current distribution, i.e. the probability distribution of the passages to finite voltage from the superconducting state as a function of the bias current, that is the information more promptly available in the experiments. We consider a noise source that is a mixture of two different types of processes: a Gaussian contribution to simulate an uncorrelated ordinary thermal bath, and non-Gaussian, α-stable (or Lévy) term, generally associated to non-equilibrium transport phenomena. We find that the analysis of the switching current distribution makes it possible to efficiently detect a non-Gaussian noise component in a Gaussian background.
