Water is a radiation protection agent for ionised pyrrole

Radiation-induced damage of biological matter is an ubiquitous problem in nature. The influence of the hydration environment is widely discussed, but its exact role remains elusive. Utilising well defined solvated-molecule aggregates, we experimentally observed a hydrogen-bonded water molecule acting as a radiation protection agent for ionised pyrrole, a prototypical aromatic biomolecule. Pure samples of pyrrole and pyrrole(H2O) were outer-valence ionised and the subsequent damage and relaxation processes were studied. Bare pyrrole ions fragmented through the breaking of C-C or N-C covalent bonds. However, for pyrrole(H2O)+, we observed a strong protection of the pyrrole ring through the dissociative release of neutral water or by transferring an electron or proton across the hydrogen bond. Overall, a single water molecule strongly reduces the fragmentation probability and thus the persistent radiation damage of singly-ionised pyrrole.

Mapping the photochemistry of cyclopentadiene: from theory to ultrafast X-ray scattering

The photoinduced ring-conversion reaction when cyclopentadiene (CP) is excited at 5.10 eV is simulated using surface-hopping semiclassical trajectories with XMS(3)-CASPT2(4,4)/cc-pVDZ electronic structure theory. In addition, PBE0/def2-SV(P) is employed for ground state propagation of the trajectories. The dynamics is propagated for 10 ps, mapping both the nonadiabatic short-time dynamics (<300 fs) and the increasingly statistical dynamics on the electronic ground state. The short-time dynamics yields a mixture of hot CP and bicyclo[2.1.0]pentene (BP), with the two products reached via different regions of the same conical intersection seam. On the ground state, we observe slow conversion from BP to CP which is modelled by RRKM theory with a transition state determined using PBE0/def2-TZVP. The CP products are furthermore associated with ground state hydrogen shifts and some H-atom dissociation. Finally, the prospects for detailed experimental mapping using novel ultrafast X-ray scattering experiments are discussed and observables for such experiments are predicted. In particular, we assess the possibility of retrieving electronic states and their populations alongside the structural dynamics.

Effects and Influence of External Electric Fields on the Equilibrium Properties of Tautomeric Molecules

In this review, we have attempted to briefly summarize the influence of an external electric field on an assembly of tautomeric molecules and to what experimentally observable effects this interaction can lead to. We have focused more extensively on the influence of an oriented external electric field (OEEF) on excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) from the studies available to date. The possibilities provided by OEEF for regulating several processes and studying physicochemical processes in tautomers have turned this direction into an attractive area of research due to its numerous applications.

Photochemical carbon-sulfur bond cleavage in thioethers mediated via excited state Rydberg-to-valence evolution

Time-resolved photoelectron imaging and supporting ab initio quantum chemistry calculations were used to investigate non-adiabatic excess energy redistribution dynamics operating in the saturated thioethers diethylsulfide, tetrahydrothiophene and thietane. In all cases, 200 nm excitation leads to molecular fragmentation on an ultrafast (<100 fs) timescale, driven by the evolution of Rydberg-to-valence orbital character along the S-C stretching coordinate. The C-S-C bending angle was also found to be a key coordinate driving initial internal conversion through the excited state Rydberg manifold, although only small angular displacements away from the ground state equilibrium geometry are required. Conformational constraints imposed by the cyclic ring structures of tetrahydrothiophene and thietane do not therefore influence dynamical timescales to any significant extent. Through use of a high-intensity 267 nm probe, we were also able to detect the presence of some transient (bi)radical species. These are extremely short lived, but they appear to confirm the presence of two competing excited state fragmentation channels - one proceeding directly from the initially prepared 4p manifold, and one involving non-adiabatic population of the 4s state. This is in addition to a decay pathway leading back to the S₀ electronic ground state, which shows an enhanced propensity in the 5-membered ring system tetrahydrothiophene over the other two species investigated.

Interplay of conformational relaxation and hydrogen bond dynamics in the excited states of fluorescent Schiff base anions

Time resolved fluorescence spectroscopic investigation of four Schiff base anions has established that their excited state dynamics is governed by several solvent properties: polarity, viscosity and hydrogen bond donating ability. With viscous protic solvents like glycerol, fluorescence lifetimes of anions have been found to be markedly longer than those in ethanol, implying that conformational relaxation of molecules plays a key role in their nonradiative relaxation. Surprisingly, the lifetimes in less viscous aprotic solvents, like acetonitrile, are found to be even longer. The only plausible rationalization of this observation is in the light of hydrogen bond-assisted nonradiative phenomena that are operative in protic solvents. This contention draws support from a time evolution of the emission in the red end of the spectrum in low to moderately hydrogen bond donating protic solvents, with regard to an absence of such a rise time in aprotic solvents and strongly hydrogen bond donating solvents, viz., 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol. Rudimentary quantum chemical calculations provide a preliminary idea about the nature of excited state hydrogen bond redistribution involved in the process.

Spectroscopic application of few-femtosecond deep-ultraviolet laser pulses from resonant dispersive wave emission in a hollow capillary fibre

We exploit the phenomenon of resonant dispersive wave (RDW) emission in gas-filled hollow capillary fibres (HCFs) to realize time-resolved photoelectron imaging (TRPEI) measurements with an extremely short temporal resolution. By integrating the output end of an HCF directly into a vacuum chamber assembly we demonstrate two-colour deep ultraviolet (DUV)-infrared instrument response functions of just 10 and 11 fs at central pump wavelengths of 250 and 280 nm, respectively. This result represents an advance in the current state of the art for ultrafast photoelectron spectroscopy. We also present an initial TRPEI measurement investigating the excited-state photochemical dynamics operating in the N-methylpyrrolidine molecule. Given the substantial interest in generating extremely short and highly tuneable DUV pulses for many advanced spectroscopic applications, we anticipate our first demonstration will stimulate wider uptake of the novel RDW-based approach for studying ultrafast photochemistry – particularly given the relatively compact and straightforward nature of the HCF setup.

Identification of Isomeric Lipids by UV Spectroscopy of Noncovalent Complexes with Aromatic Molecules

The tremendous structural and isomeric diversity of lipids enables a wide range of their functions in nature but makes the identification of these biomolecules challenging. We distinguish and quantify isomeric lipids using cold ion UV fragmentation spectroscopy of their noncovalent complexes with aromatic amino acids and dipeptides. On the basis of structural simulations, specific isomer-sensitive aromatic "sensors" have been preselected for lipids of each studied class. Tyrosine appeared to be a good "sensor" to distinguish steroids and prostaglandins, which are rich in functional groups, while diphenylalanine is a better choice for sensing largely hydrophobic phospholipids. With this sensor, the relative concentrations of two isomeric glycerophospholipids mixed in solution have been determined with 3.3% accuracy, which should degrade only to 3.7% for a 14 s express measurement.

Excited State Intramolecular Proton Transfer with Nuclear-Electronic Orbital Ehrenfest Dynamics

The recent development of the Ehrenfest dynamics approach in the nuclear-electronic orbital (NEO) framework provides a promising way to simulate coupled nuclear-electronic dynamics. Our previous study showed that the NEO-Ehrenfest approach with a semiclassical traveling proton basis method yields accurate predictions of molecular vibrational frequencies. In this work, we provide a more thorough analysis of the semiclassical traveling proton basis method to elucidate its validity and convergence behavior. We also conduct NEO-Ehrenfest dynamics simulations to study an excited state intramolecular proton transfer process. These simulations reveal that nuclear quantum effects influence the predictions of proton transfer reaction rates and kinetic isotope effects due to the intrinsic delocalized nature of the quantum nuclear wave function. This work illustrates the importance of nuclear quantum effects in coupled nuclear-electronic dynamical processes and shows that the NEO-Ehrenfest approach can be a powerful tool for providing insights and predictions for these processes.

Theoretical investigations on forward-backward ESIPT processes of three fluorophores deriving from 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)thiazole

The photophysical properties and excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) processes for 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)-4-chloromethylthiazole (1), 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)-4-phenylthiazole (2), 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)-4-hydroxymethyl-thiazole (3) were studied at the TD-B3PW91/6-31 + G(d, p)/IEFPCM level. The structures of 1-3 were fully optimized and the corresponding structural parameters, infrared spectra and electron densities in the ground (S₀) and the first excited (S₁) states were analyzed. The calculated absorption and fluorescence wavelengths of 1-3 reproduced the experimental data. The potential energy curves of the S₀ and S₁ states were built and the ESIPT processes were clarified. Our results showed that the intramolecular H-bonds of 3 and 2 in the S₁ state were the strongest and the weakest, respectively, and then the ESIPT potential barriers of 3 and 2 were the lowest and highest, respectively. Among the three phenol-thiazole type probes, the compound 2 with phenyl ring group at the 4 position of the thiazole ring had the larger π-conjugation, and had the higher ESIPT potential barrier at the same time. The corresponding compound 1 and 3 with CH₂Cl and CH₂OH had the lower ESIPT barrier.

Influence of the Solvent Environment on the Ultrafast Relaxation Pathways of a Sunscreen Molecule Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate

The excited-state dynamics of photoexcited diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate (DHHB), a UVA absorber widely used in sunscreen formulations, are studied with transient electronic and vibrational absorption spectroscopy methods in four different solvents. In the polar solvents methanol, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and acetonitrile, strong stimulated emission (SE) is observed at early time delays after photoexcitation at a near-UV wavelength of λ_ex = 360 nm, and decays with time constants of 420 fs in methanol and 770 fs in DMSO. The majority (∼95%) of photoexcited DHHB returns to the ground state with time constants of 15 ps in methanol and 25 ps in DMSO. In the nonpolar solvent cyclohexane, ∼ 98% of DHHB photoexcited at λ_ex = 345 nm relaxes to the ground state with a ∼ 10 ps time constant, and the SE is weak. DHHB preferentially adopts an enol form in its ground S₀ state, but excited state absorption (ESA) bands seen in TEAS are assigned to both the S₁-keto and S₁-enol forms, indicating a role for ultrafast intramolecular excited state hydrogen transfer (ESHT). This ESHT is inhibited by polar solvents. The two S₁ tautomers decay with similar time scales to the observed recovery of ground state population. For molecules that avoid ESHT, torsion around a central C-C bond minimizes the S₁-enol energy, quenches the SE, and is proposed to lead to a conical intersection with the S₀ state that mediates the ground state recovery. A competing trans-enol isomeric photoproduct is observed as a minor competitor to parent recovery in polar solvents. Evidence is presented for triplet (T₁) enol production in polar solvents, and for T₁ quenching by octocrylene, a common UVB absorber sunscreen additive. The T₁ keto form is observed in cyclohexane solution.

Improved insights in time-resolved photoelectron imaging

We review new light source developments and data analysis considerations relevant to the time-resolved photoelectron imaging technique. Case studies illustrate how these themes may enhance understanding in studies of excited state molecular dynamics.

Laser-Induced Electron Transfer in the Dissociative Multiple Ionization of Argon Dimers

We report on an experimental and theoretical study of the ionization-fragmentation dynamics of argon dimers in intense few-cycle laser pulses with a tagged carrier-envelope phase. We find that a field-driven electron transfer process from one argon atom across the system boundary to the other argon atom triggers subcycle electron-electron interaction dynamics in the neighboring atom. This attosecond electron-transfer process between distant entities and its implications manifests itself as a distinct phase-shift between the measured asymmetry of electron emission curves of the Ar^{+}+Ar^{2+} and Ar^{2+}+Ar^{2+} fragmentation channels. This letter discloses a strong-field route to controlling the dynamics in molecular compounds through the excitation of electronic dynamics on a distant molecule by driving intermolecular electron-transfer processes.

Structure-guided evolution of Green2 toward photostability and quantum yield enhancement by F145Y substitution

Quantum yield is a determinant for fluorescent protein (FP) applications and enhancing FP brightness through gene engineering is still a challenge. Green2, our de novo FP synthesized by microfluidic picoarray and cloning, has a significantly lower quantum yield than enhanced green FP, though they have high homology and share the same chromophore. To increase its quantum yield, we introduced an F145Y substitution into Green2 based on rational structural analysis. Y145 significantly increased the quantum yield (0.22 vs. 0.18) and improved the photostability (t_1/2 , 73.0 s vs. 46.0 s), but did not affect the excitation and emission spectra. Further structural analysis showed that the F145Y substitution resulted in a significant electrical field change in the immediate environment of the chromophore. The perturbation of electrostatic charge around the chromophore lead to energy barrier changes between the ground and excited states, which resulted in the enhancement of quantum yield and photostability. Our results illustrate a typical example of engineering an FP based solely on fluorescence efficiency optimization and provide novel insights into the rational evolution of FPs.

Ultrafast Molecular Spectroscopy Using a Hollow-Core Photonic Crystal Fiber Light Source

We demonstrate, for the first time, the application of rare-gas-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fibers (HC-PCFs) as tunable ultraviolet light sources in femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy. A critical requirement here is excellent output stability over extended periods of data acquisition, and we show this can be readily achieved. The time-resolved photoelectron imaging technique reveals nonadiabatic dynamical processes operating on three distinct time scales in the styrene molecule following excitation over the 242-258 nm region. These include ultrafast (<100 fs) internal conversion between the S₂(ππ*) and S₁(ππ*) electronic states and subsequent intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution within S₁(ππ*). Compact, cost-effective, and highly efficient benchtop HC-PCF sources have huge potential to open up many exciting new avenues for ultrafast spectroscopy in the ultraviolet and vacuum ultraviolet spectral regions. We anticipate that our initial validation of this approach will generate important impetus in this area.

Diabatic States at Construction (DAC) through Generalized Singular Value Decomposition

A procedure, called generalized diabatic-at-construction (GDAC), is presented to transform adiabatic potential energy surfaces into a diabatic representation by generalized singular value decomposition. First, we use a set of localized, valence bond-like configuration state functions, called DAC, as the basis states. Then, the adiabatic ground and relevant excited states are determined using multistate density functional theory (MSDFT). GDAC differs in the opposite direction from traditional approaches based on adiabatic-to-diabatic transformation with certain property restraints. The method is illustrated with applications to a model first-order bond dissociation reaction of CH₃OCH₂Cl polarized by a solvent molecule, the ground- and first-excited-state potential energy surfaces near the minimum conical intersection for the ammonia dimer photodissociation, and the multiple avoided curve crossings in the dissociation of lithium hydride. The GDAC diabatization method may be useful for defining charge-localized states in studies of electron transfer and proton-coupled electron transfer reactions in proteins.

UV and Resonance Raman Spectroscopic and Theoretical Studies on the Solvent-Dependent Ground and Excited-State Thione → Thiol Tautomerization of 4,6-Dimethyl-2-mercaptopyrimidine (DMMP)

The vibrational spectra of 4,6-dimethyl-2-mercaptopyrimidine (DMMP) in acetonitrile, methanol, and water were assigned by resonance Raman spectroscopy through a combination of Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), FT-Raman UV-vis spectroscopy, and density functional theoretical (DFT) calculations. The FT-Raman spectra show that the neat solid DMMP is formed as a dimer due to intermolecular hydrogen bonding. In methanol and water, however, the majority of the Raman spectra were assigned to the vibrational modes of DMMP(solvent) _n ( n = 1-4) clusters containing NH···O hydrogen bonds. The intermolecular NH···O hydrogen bond interactions, which are key constituents of the stable DMMP thione structure, revealed significant structural differences in acetonitrile, methanol, and water. In addition, UV-induced hydrogen transfer isomeric reactions between the thione and thiol forms of DMMP were detected in water and acetonitrile. DFT calculations indicate that the observed thione → thiol tautomerization should occur easily in lower excited states in acetonitrile and water.

The roles of buckled geometry and water environment in the excitonic properties of graphitic C3N4

The exciton plays a crucial role in two-dimensional materials involved in photocatalytic water splitting, where its properties are determined not only by the material itself, but also by the surrounding water environment. By the framework of many-body perturbation theory, we investigated the excitonic effects in pure and water-adsorbed g-C₃N₄. It is shown that the excitonic properties are very sensitive to the geometry of g-C₃N₄ and the adsorption of water molecules. Firstly, the optical band gap, i.e. the first bright excitonic energy of pure g-C₃N₄ decreases remarkably from a high symmetry planar structure (3.8 eV) to a P1 buckled configuration (2.7 eV). Secondly, the hydrogen bonds between water and g-C₃N₄ induce the generation of interface excitons. With a reduced binding energy (at least 0.2 eV), interface excitons can contribute to a more efficient separation of electrons and holes. Our work provides an insight into the excitation mechanism of 2D photocatalysts in a real environment.

Real-Time Observation of Internal Motion within Ultrafast Dissipative Optical Soliton Molecules

Real-time access to the internal ultrafast dynamics of complex dissipative optical systems opens new explorations of pulse-pulse interactions and dynamic patterns. We present the first direct experimental evidence of the internal motion of a dissipative optical soliton molecule generated in a passively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser. We map the internal motion of a soliton pair molecule by using a dispersive Fourier-transform imaging technique, revealing different categories of internal pulsations, including vibrationlike and phase drifting dynamics. Our experiments agree well with numerical predictions and bring insights to the analogy between self-organized states of lights and states of the matter.

Relative detection sensitivity in ultrafast spectroscopy: state lifetime and laser pulse duration effects

Excited state lifetime and laser pulse duration have important implications for effective relative detection sensitivity in time-resolved spectroscopy.
