Imaging the Temporal Evolution of Molecular Orbitals during Ultrafast Dissociation

Dynamics of core-excited ammonia: disentangling fragmentation pathways by complementary spectroscopic methods

Fragmentation dynamics of core-excited isolated ammonia molecules is studied by two different and complementary experimental methods, high-resolution resonant Auger spectroscopy and electron energy-selected Auger electron-photoion coincidence spectroscopy (AEPICO). The combined use of these two techniques allows obtaining information on different dissociation patterns, in particular fragmentation before relaxation, often called ultrafast dissociation (UFD), and fragmentation after relaxation. The resonant Auger spectra contain the spectral signature of both molecular and fragment final states, and therefore can provide information on all events occurring during the core-hole lifetime, in particular fragmentation before relaxation. Coincidence measurements allow correlating Auger electrons with ionic fragments from the same molecule, and relating the ionic fragments to specific Auger final electronic states, and yield additional information on which final states are dissociative, and which ionic fragments can be produced in timescales either corresponding to the core-hole lifetime or longer. Furthermore, we show that by the combined use of two complementary experimental techniques we are able to identify more electronic states of the NH₂⁺ fragment with respect to the single one already reported in the literature.

Ultrafast dissociation of ammonia: Auger Doppler effect and redistribution of the internal energy

We study vibrationally-resolved resonant Auger (RAS) spectra of ammonia recorded in coincidence with the NH₂⁺ fragment, which is produced in the course of dissociation either in the core-excited 1s^-14a11 intermediate state or the first spectator 3a^-24a11 final state. Correlation of the NH₂⁺ ion flight times with electron kinetic energies allows directly observing the Auger-Doppler dispersion for each vibrational state of the fragment. The median distribution of the kinetic energy release E_KER, derived from the coincidence data, shows three distinct branches as a function of Auger electron kinetic energy E_e: E_e + 1.75E_KER = const for the molecular band; E_KER = const for the fragment band; and E_e + E_KER = const for the region preceding the fragment band. The deviation of the molecular band dispersion from E_e + E_KER = const is attributed to the redistribution of the available energy to the dissociation energy and excitation of the internal degrees of freedom in the molecular fragment. We found that for each vibrational line the dispersive behavior of E_KERvs. E_e is very sensitive to the instrumental uncertainty in the determination of E_KER causing the competition between the Raman (E_KER + E_e = const) and Auger (E_e = const) dispersions: increase in the broadening of the finite kinetic energy release resolution leads to a change of the dispersion from the Raman to the Auger one.

Trends in angle-resolved molecular photoelectron spectroscopy

In this perspective article, main trends of angle-resolved molecular photoelectron spectroscopy in the laboratory up to the molecular frame, in different regimes of light-matter interactions, are highlighted with emphasis on foundations and most recent applications.

Electron-ion coincidence measurements of molecular dynamics with intense X-ray pulses

Molecules can sequentially absorb multiple photons when irradiated by an intense X-ray pulse from a free-electron laser. If the time delay between two photoabsorption events can be determined, this enables pump-probe experiments with a single X-ray pulse, where the absorption of the first photon induces electronic and nuclear dynamics that are probed by the absorption of the second photon. Here we show a realization of such a single-pulse X-ray pump-probe scheme on N\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$_2$$\end{document}2 molecules, using the X-ray induced dissociation process as an internal clock that is read out via coincident detection of photoelectrons and fragment ions. By coincidence analysis of the kinetic energies of the ionic fragments and photoelectrons, the transition from a bound molecular dication to two isolated atomic ions is observed through the energy shift of the inner-shell electrons. Via ab-initio simulations, we are able to map characteristic features in the kinetic energy release and photoelectron spectrum to specific delay times between photoabsorptions. In contrast to previous studies where nuclear motions were typically revealed by measuring ion kinetics, our work shows that inner-shell photoelectron energies can also be sensitive probes of nuclear dynamics, which adds one more dimension to the study of light-matter interactions with X-ray pulses.

Advancements in the use of Auger electrons in science and medicine during the period 2015-2019

Auger electrons can be highly radiotoxic when they are used to irradiate specific molecular sites. This has spurred basic science investigations of their radiobiological effects and clinical investigations of their potential for therapy. Focused symposia on the biophysical aspects of Auger processes have been held quadrennially. This 9th International Symposium on Physical, Molecular, Cellular, and Medical Aspects of Auger Processes at Oxford University brought together scientists from many different fields to review past findings, discuss the latest studies, and plot the future work to be done. This review article examines the research in this field that was published during the years 2015-2019 which corresponds to the period since the last meeting in Japan. In addition, this article points to future work yet to be done. There have been a plethora of advancements in our understanding of Auger processes. These advancements range from basic atomic and molecular physics to new ways to implement Auger electron emitters in radiopharmaceutical therapy. The highly localized doses of radiation that are deposited within a 10 nm of the decay site make them precision tools for discovery across the physical, chemical, biological, and medical sciences.

Gas-phase endstation of electron, ion and coincidence spectroscopies for diluted samples at the FinEstBeAMS beamline of the MAX IV 1.5 GeV storage ring

Since spring 2019 an experimental setup consisting of an electron spectrometer and an ion time-of-flight mass spectrometer for diluted samples has been available for users at the FinEstBeAMS beamline of the MAX IV Laboratory in Lund, Sweden. The setup enables users to study the interaction of atoms, molecules, (molecular) microclusters and nanoparticles with short-wavelength (vacuum ultraviolet and X-ray) synchrotron radiation and to follow the electron and nuclear dynamics induced by this interaction. Test measurements of N2 and thiophene (C4H4S) molecules have demonstrated that the setup can be used for many-particle coincidence spectroscopy. The measurements of the Ar 3p photoelectron spectra by linear horizontal and vertical polarization show that angle-resolved experiments can also be performed. The possibility to compare the electron spectroscopic results of diluted samples with solid targets in the case of Co2O3 and Fe2O3 at the Co and Fe L2,3-absorption edges in the same experimental session is also demonstrated. Because the photon energy range of the FinEstBeAMS beamline extends from 4.4 eV up to 1000 eV, electron, ion and coincidence spectroscopy studies can be executed in a very broad photon energy range.

Hard x-ray spectroscopy and dynamics of isolated atoms and molecules: a review

We present here a review of the most significant recent achievements in the field of HAXPES (hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) on isolated atoms and molecules, and related spectroscopies. The possibility of conducting hard x-ray photoexcitation and photoionization experiments under state-of-the art conditions in terms of photon and electron kinetic energy resolution has become available only in the last few years. HAXPES has then produced structural and dynamical information at the level of detail already reached in the VUV and soft-x-ray ranges. The much improved experimental conditions have allowed extending to the hard x-ray range some methods well established in soft x-ray spectroscopies. Investigations of electron and nuclear dynamics in the femtosecond (fs, 10^-15 s) and even attosecond (as, 10^-18 s) regime have become feasible. Complex relaxation phenomena following deep-core ionization can now be enlightened in great detail. Other phenomena like e.g. recoil-induced effects are much more important in fast photoelectron emission, which can be induced by hard x-rays. Furthermore, a new kind of ionic states with double core holes can be observed by x-ray single-photon absorption. Future perspectives are also discussed.

Spectroscopic Signature of Chemical Bond Dissociation Revealed by Calculated Core-Electron Spectra

The advent of ultrashort soft X-ray pulse sources permits the use of established gas-phase spectroscopy methods to investigate ultrafast photochemistry in isolated molecules with element and site specificity. In the present study, we simulate excited-state wavepacket dynamics of a prototypical process, the ultrafast photodissociation of methyl iodide. Using the simulation, we calculate time-dependent excited-state carbon edge photoelectron and Auger electron spectra. We observe distinct signatures in both types of spectra and show their direct connection to C-I bond dissociation and charge rearrangement processes in the molecule. We demonstrate at the CH₃I molecule that the observed signatures allow us to map the time-dependent dynamics of ultrafast photoinduced bond breaking with unprecedented detail.

Photochemical pathways in nucleobases measured with an X-ray FEL

The conversion of light energy into other molecular energetic degrees of freedom is often dominated by ultrafast, non-adiabatic processes. Femtosecond spectroscopy with optical pulses has helped in shaping our understanding of crucial processes in molecular energy-conversion. The advent of new, ultrashort and bright X-ray free electron laser sources opens the possibility to use X-ray-typical element and site sensitivity for ultrafast molecular research. We present two types of spectroscopy, ultrafast Auger and ultrafast X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and discuss their sensitivity to molecular processes. While Auger spectroscopy is able to monitor bond distance changes in the vicinity of an X-ray created core hole, near-edge absorption spectroscopy can deliver high-fidelity information on non-adiabatic transitions involving lone-pair orbitals. We demonstrate these features on the example of the UV-excited nucleobase thymine, investigated at the oxygen K-edge. We find a C-O bond elongation in the Auger data in addition to ππ*/ nπ* non-adiabatic transition in X-ray near-edge absorption. We compare the results from both methods and draw a conclusive scenario of non-adiabatic molecular relaxation after UV excitation. Electronic decay of core-excited HCl molecules probed by THz streaking

The ultrafast electronic decay of HCl molecules in the time domain after resonant core excitation was measured. Here, a Cl-2p core electron was promoted to the antibonding σ^* orbital initiating molecular dissociation, and simultaneously, the electronic excitation relaxes via an Auger decay. For HCl, both processes compete on similar ultrashort femtosecond time scales. In order to measure the lifetime of the core hole excitation, we collinearly superimposed 40 fs soft x-ray pulses with intense terahertz (THz) radiation from the free-electron laser in Hamburg (FLASH). Electrons emitted from the molecules are accelerated (streaked) by the THz electric field where the resulting momentum change depends on the field's phase at the instant of ionization. Evaluation of a time-shift between the delay-dependent streaking spectra of photo- and Auger electrons yields a decay constant of (11 ± 2) fs for LMM Auger electrons. For further validation, the method was also applied to the MNN Auger decay of krypton. Reproduction of the value already published in the literature confirms that a temporal resolution much below the duration of the exciting x-ray pulses can be reached.

Role of ultrafast dissociation in the fragmentation of chlorinated methanes

Photon-induced fragmentation of a full set of chlorinated methanes (CH₃Cl, CH₂Cl₂, CHCl₃, CCl₄) has been investigated both experimentally and computationally. Using synchrotron radiation and electron-ion coincidence measurements, the dissociation processes were studied after chlorine 2p electron excitation. Experimental evidence for CH₃Cl and CH₂Cl₂ contains unique features suggesting that fast dissociation processes take place. By contrast, CHCl₃ and CCl₄ molecules do not contain the same features, hinting that they experience alternative mechanisms for dissociation and charge migration. Computational work indicates differing rates of charge movement after the core-excitation, which can be used to explain the differences observed experimentally.

Photophysics of indole upon X-ray absorption

A photofragmentation study of gas-phase indole (C₈H₇N) upon single-photon ionization at a photon energy of 420 eV is presented.

Different Time Scales in the Dissociation Dynamics of Core-Excited CF_{4} by Two Internal Clocks

Fragmentation processes following C 1s→lowest unoccupied molecular orbital core excitations in CF_{4} have been analyzed on the ground of the angular distribution of the CF_{3}^{+} emitted fragments by means of Auger electron-photoion coincidences. Different time scales have been enlightened, which correspond to either ultrafast fragmentation, on the few-femtosecond scale, where the molecule has no time to rotate and the fragments are emitted according to the maintained orientation of the core-excited species, or dissociation after resonant Auger decay, where the molecule still keeps some memory of the excitation process before reassuming random orientation. Potential energy surfaces of the ground, core-excited, and final states have been calculated at the ab initio level, which show the dissociative nature of the neutral excited state, leading to ultrafast dissociation, as well as the also dissociative nature of some of the final ionic states reached after resonant Auger decay, yielding the same fragments on a much longer time scale.

Subfemtosecond Control of Molecular Fragmentation by Hard X-Ray Photons

Tuning hard x-ray excitation energy along Cl 1s→σ^{*} resonance in gaseous HCl allows manipulating molecular fragmentation in the course of the induced multistep ultrafast dissociation. The observations are supported by theoretical modeling, which shows a strong interplay between the topology of the potential energy curves, involved in the Auger cascades, and the so-called core-hole clock, which determines the time spent by the system in the very first step. The asymmetric profile of the fragmentation ratios reflects different dynamics of nuclear wave packets dependent on the photon energy.

A perspective for investigating photo-induced molecular dynamics from within with femtosecond free electron lasers

Photo-induced molecular dynamics can now be investigated using free electron lasers (FELs) whose attributes are unprecedented brightness, few femtosecond pulses duration and in the near future few hundreds of attosecond pulse duration.
