Anomalous Thermal Conductivity and Magnetic Torque Response in the Honeycomb Magnet α-RuCl_{3}

Field tuning Kitaev systems for spin fractionalization and topological order

The honeycomb Kitaev model describes aZ2spin liquid with topological order and fractionalized excitations consisting of gappedπ-fluxes and free Majorana fermions. Competing interactions, even when not very strong, are known to destabilize the Kitaev spin liquid. Magnetic fields are a convenient parameter for tuning between different phases of the Kitaev systems, and have even been investigated for potentially counteracting the effects of other destabilizing interactions leading to a revival of the topological phase. Here we review the progress in understanding the effects of magnetic fields on some of the perturbed Kitaev systems, particularly on fractionalization and topological order.

Gate-Controlled Anyon Generation and Detection in Kitaev Spin Liquids

Reliable manipulation of non-Abelian Ising anyons supported by Kitaev spin liquids may enable intrinsically fault-tolerant quantum computation. Here, we introduce a standalone scheme for both generating and detecting individual Ising anyons using tunable gate voltages in a heterostructure containing a non-Abelian Kitaev spin liquid and a monolayer semiconductor. The key ingredients of our setup are a Kondo coupling to stabilize an Ising anyon in the spin liquid around each electron in the semiconductor, and a large charging energy to allow control over the electron numbers in distinct gate-defined regions of the semiconductor. In particular, a single Ising anyon can be generated at a disk-shaped region by gate tuning its electron number to one, while it can be interferometrically detected by measuring the electrical conductance of a ring-shaped region around it whose electron number is allowed to fluctuate between zero and one. We provide concrete experimental guidelines for implementing our proposal in promising candidate materials like α-RuCl_{3}.

Vacancy Spectroscopy of Non-Abelian Kitaev Spin Liquids

Spin vacancies in the non-Abelian Kitaev spin liquid are known to harbor Majorana zero modes, potentially enabling topological quantum computing at elevated temperatures. Here, we study the spectroscopic signatures of such Majorana zero modes in a scanning tunneling setup where a non-Abelian Kitaev spin liquid with a finite density of spin vacancies forms a tunneling barrier between a tip and a substrate. Our key result is a well-defined peak close to zero bias voltage in the derivative of the tunneling conductance whose voltage and intensity both increase with the density of vacancies. This "quasi-zero-voltage peak" is identified as the closest analog of the zero-voltage peak observed in topological superconductors that additionally reflects the fractionalized nature of spin-liquid-based Majorana zero modes. We further highlight a single-fermion Van Hove singularity at a higher voltage that reveals the energy scale of the emergent Majorana fermions in the Kitaev spin liquid. Our proposed signatures are within reach of current experiments on the candidate material α-RuCl_{3}.

Possible intermediate quantum spin liquid phase in α-RuCl3 under high magnetic fields up to 100 T

Pursuing the exotic quantum spin liquid (QSL) state in the Kitaev material α-RuCl3 has intrigued great research interest recently. A fascinating question is on the possible existence of a field-induced QSL phase in this compound. Here we perform high-field magnetization measurements of α-RuCl3 up to 102 T employing the non-destructive and destructive pulsed magnets. Under the out-of-plane field along the c* axis (i.e., perpendicular to the honeycomb plane), two quantum phase transitions are uncovered at respectively 35 T and about 83 T, between which lies an intermediate phase as the predicted QSL. This is in sharp contrast to the case with in-plane fields, where a single transition is found at around 7 T and the intermediate QSL phase is absent instead. By measuring the magnetization data with fields tilted from the c* axis up to 90° (i.e., in-plane direction), we obtain the field-angle phase diagram that contains the zigzag, paramagnetic, and QSL phases. Based on the K-J-Γ-[Formula: see text] model for α-RuCl3 with a large Kitaev term we perform density matrix renormalization group simulations and reproduce the quantum phase diagram in excellent agreement with experiments.

Planar thermal Hall effect of topological bosons in the Kitaev magnet α-RuCl3

The honeycomb magnet α-RuCl₃ has attracted considerable interest because it is proximate to the Kitaev Hamiltonian whose excitations are Majoranas and vortices. The thermal Hall conductivity κ_xy of Majorana fermions is predicted to be half-quantized. Half-quantization of κ_xy/T (T, temperature) was recently reported, but this observation has proven difficult to reproduce. Here, we report detailed measurements of κ_xy on α-RuCl₃ with the magnetic field B ∥ a (zigzag axis). In our experiment, κ_xy/T is observed to be strongly temperature dependent between 0.5 and 10 K. We show that its temperature profile matches the distinct form expected for topological bosonic modes in a Chern-insulator-like model. Our analysis yields magnon band energies in agreement with spectroscopic experiments. At high B, the spin excitations evolve into magnon-like modes with a Chern number of ~1. The bosonic character is incompatible with half-quantization of κ_xy/T.

Unambiguous Experimental Verification of Linear-in-Temperature Spinon Thermal Conductivity in an Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Chain

The everlasting interest in spin chains is mostly rooted in the fact that they generally allow for comparisons between theory and experiment with remarkable accuracy, especially for exactly solvable models. A notable example is the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain (AFHC), which can be well described by the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory and exhibits fractionalized spinon excitations with distinct thermodynamic and spectroscopic experimental signatures consistent with theoretical predictions. A missing piece, however, is the lack of a comprehensive understanding of the spinon heat transport in AFHC systems, due to difficulties in its experimental evaluation against the backdrop of other heat carriers and complex scattering processes. Here we address this situation by performing ultralow-temperature thermal conductivity measurements on a nearly ideal spin-1/2 AFHC system copper benzoate Cu(C_{6}H_{5}COO)_{2}·3H_{2}O, whose field-dependent spin excitation gap enables a reliable extraction of the spinon thermal conductivity κ_{s} at zero field. κ_{s} was found to exhibit a linear temperature dependence κ_{s}∼T at low temperatures, with κ_{s}/T as large as 1.70  mW cm^{-1} K^{-2}, followed by a precipitate decline below ∼0.3  K. The observed κ_{s}∼T clarifies the discrepancies between various spin chain systems and serves as a benchmark for one-dimensional spinon heat transport in the low-temperature limit. The abrupt loss of κ_{s} with no corresponding anomaly in the specific heat is discussed in the context of many-body localization.

Theory of the Kitaev model in a [111] magnetic field

Recent numerical studies indicate that the antiferromagnetic Kitaev honeycomb lattice model undergoes a magnetic-field-induced quantum phase transition into a new spin-liquid phase. This intermediate-field phase has been previously characterized as a gapless spin liquid. By implementing a recently developed variational approach based on the exact fractionalized excitations of the zero-field model, we demonstrate that the field-induced spin liquid is gapped and belongs to Kitaev’s 16-fold way. Specifically, the low-field non-Abelian liquid with Chern number C = ±1 transitions into an Abelian liquid with C = ±4. The critical field and the field-dependent behaviors of key physical quantities are in good quantitative agreement with published numerical results. Furthermore, we derive an effective field theory for the field-induced critical point which readily explains the ostensibly gapless nature of the intermediate-field spin liquid.

Identification of a Kitaev quantum spin liquid by magnetic field angle dependence

Quantum spin liquids realize massive entanglement and fractional quasiparticles from localized spins, proposed as an avenue for quantum science and technology. In particular, topological quantum computations are suggested in the non-abelian phase of Kitaev quantum spin liquid with Majorana fermions, and detection of Majorana fermions is one of the most outstanding problems in modern condensed matter physics. Here, we propose a concrete way to identify the non-abelian Kitaev quantum spin liquid by magnetic field angle dependence. Topologically protected critical lines exist on a plane of magnetic field angles, and their shapes are determined by microscopic spin interactions. A chirality operator plays a key role in demonstrating microscopic dependences of the critical lines. We also show that the chirality operator can be used to evaluate topological properties of the non-abelian Kitaev quantum spin liquid without relying on Majorana fermion descriptions. Experimental criteria for the non-abelian spin liquid state are provided for future experiments.

Heat Transport in Herbertsmithite: Can a Quantum Spin Liquid Survive Disorder?

One favorable situation for spins to enter the long-sought quantum spin liquid (QSL) state is when they sit on a kagome lattice. No consensus has been reached in theory regarding the true ground state of this promising platform. The experimental efforts, relying mostly on one archetypal material ZnCu_{3}(OH)_{6}Cl_{2}, have also led to diverse possibilities. Apart from subtle interactions in the Hamiltonian, there is the additional degree of complexity associated with disorder in the real material ZnCu_{3}(OH)_{6}Cl_{2} that haunts most experimental probes. Here we resort to heat transport measurement, a cleaner probe in which instead of contributing directly, the disorder only impacts the signal from the kagome spins. For ZnCu_{3}(OH)_{6}Cl_{2}, we observed no contribution by any spin excitation nor obvious field-induced change to the thermal conductivity. These results impose strong constraints on various scenarios about the ground state of this kagome compound: while certain quantum paramagnetic states other than a QSL may serve as natural candidates, a QSL state, gapless or gapped, must be dramatically modified by the disorder so that the kagome spin excitations are localized.

Efficient Method for Prediction of Metastable or Ground Multipolar Ordered States and Its Application in Monolayer α-RuX_{3} (X=Cl, I)

Exotic high-rank multipolar order parameters have been found to be unexpectedly active in more and more correlated materials in recent years. Such multipoles are usually dubbed "hidden orders" since they are insensitive to common experimental probes. Theoretically, it is also difficult to predict multipolar orders via ab initio calculations in real materials. Here, we present an efficient method to predict possible multipoles in materials based on linear response theory under random phase approximation. Using this method, we successfully predict two pure metastable magnetic octupolar states in monolayer α-RuCl_{3}, which is confirmed by self-consistent unrestricted Hartree-Fock calculations. We then demonstrate that these octupolar states can be stabilized in monolayer α-RuI_{3}, one of which becomes the octupolar ground state. Furthermore, we also predict a fingerprint of an orthogonal magnetization pattern produced by the octupole moment that can be easily detected by experiment. The method and the example presented in this Letter serve as a guide for searching multipolar order parameters in other correlated materials.

Identification of magnetic interactions and high-field quantum spin liquid in α-RuCl3

The frustrated magnet α-RuCl3 constitutes a fascinating quantum material platform that harbors the intriguing Kitaev physics. However, a consensus on its intricate spin interactions and field-induced quantum phases has not been reached yet. Here we exploit multiple state-of-the-art many-body methods and determine the microscopic spin model that quantitatively explains major observations in α-RuCl3, including the zigzag order, double-peak specific heat, magnetic anisotropy, and the characteristic M-star dynamical spin structure, etc. According to our model simulations, the in-plane field drives the system into the polarized phase at about 7 T and a thermal fractionalization occurs at finite temperature, reconciling observations in different experiments. Under out-of-plane fields, the zigzag order is suppressed at 35 T, above which, and below a polarization field of 100 T level, there emerges a field-induced quantum spin liquid. The fractional entropy and algebraic low-temperature specific heat unveil the nature of a gapless spin liquid, which can be explored in high-field measurements on α-RuCl3.

Giant phonon anomalies in the proximate Kitaev quantum spin liquid α-RuCl3

The Kitaev quantum spin liquid epitomizes an entangled topological state, for which two flavors of fractionalized low-energy excitations are predicted: the itinerant Majorana fermion and the Z2 gauge flux. It was proposed recently that fingerprints of fractional excitations are encoded in the phonon spectra of Kitaev quantum spin liquids through a novel fractional-excitation-phonon coupling. Here, we detect anomalous phonon effects in α-RuCl3 using inelastic X-ray scattering with meV resolution. At high temperature, we discover interlaced optical phonons intercepting a transverse acoustic phonon between 3 and 7 meV. Upon decreasing temperature, the optical phonons display a large intensity enhancement near the Kitaev energy, JK~8 meV, that coincides with a giant acoustic phonon softening near the Z2 gauge flux energy scale. These phonon anomalies signify the coupling of phonon and Kitaev magnetic excitations in α-RuCl3 and demonstrates a proof-of-principle method to detect anomalous excitations in topological quantum materials.

Electrical Access to Ising Anyons in Kitaev Spin Liquids

We show that spin-spin correlations in a non-Abelian Kitaev spin liquid are associated with a characteristic inhomogeneous charge density distribution in the vicinity of Z_{2} vortices. This density profile and the corresponding local electric fields are observable, e.g., by means of surface probe techniques. Conversely, by applying bias voltages to several probe tips, one can stabilize Ising anyons (Z_{2} vortices harboring a Majorana zero mode) at designated positions, where we predict a clear Majorana signature in energy absorption spectroscopy.

Thermodynamic Perspective on Field-Induced Behavior of α-RuCl_{3}

Measurements of the magnetic Grüneisen parameter (Γ_{B}) and specific heat on the Kitaev material candidate α-RuCl_{3} are used to access in-plane field and temperature dependence of the entropy up to 12 T and down to 1 K. No signatures corresponding to phase transitions are detected beyond the boundary of the magnetically ordered region, but only a shoulderlike anomaly in Γ_{B}, involving an entropy increment as small as 10^{-5}Rlog2. These observations put into question the presence of a phase transition between the purported quantum spin liquid and the field-polarized state of α-RuCl_{3}. We show theoretically that at low temperatures Γ_{B} is sensitive to crossings in the lowest excitations within gapped phases, and identify the measured shoulderlike anomaly as being of such origin. Exact diagonalization calculations demonstrate that the shoulderlike anomaly can be reproduced in extended Kitaev models that gain proximity to an additional phase at finite field without entering it. We discuss manifestations of this proximity in other measurements.

Phase Diagram of the Spin-1/2 Kitaev-Gamma Chain and Emergent SU(2) Symmetry

We study the phase diagram of a one-dimensional version of the Kitaev spin-1/2 model with an extra "Γ term," using analytical, density matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization methods. Two intriguing phases are found. In the gapless phase, although the exact symmetry group of the system is discrete, the low energy theory is described by an emergent SU(2)_{1} Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model. On the other hand, the spin-spin correlation functions exhibit SU(2) breaking prefactors, even though the exponents and the logarithmic corrections are consistent with the SU(2)_{1} predictions. A modified non-Abelian bosonization formula is proposed to capture such exotic emergent "partial" SU(2) symmetry. In the ordered phase, there is numerical evidence for an O_{h}→D_{4} spontaneous symmetry breaking.

Magnetic field induced quantum phases in a tensor network study of Kitaev magnets

Recent discovery of the half quantized thermal Hall conductivity in [Formula: see text]-RuCl[Formula: see text], a candidate material for the Kitaev spin liquid, suggests the presence of a highly entangled quantum state in external magnetic fields. This field induced phase appears between the low field zig-zag magnetic order and the high field polarized state. Motivated by this experiment, we study possible field induced quantum phases in theoretical models of the Kitaev magnets, using the two dimensional tensor network approach or infinite tensor product states. We find various quantum ground states in addition to the chiral Kitaev spin liquid occupying a small area in the phase diagram. They form a band of emergent quantum phases in an intermediate window of external magnetic fields, somewhat reminiscent of the experiment. We discuss the implications of these results in view of the experiment and previous theoretical studies.

Randomly Hopping Majorana Fermions in the Diluted Kitaev System α-Ru_{0.8}Ir_{0.2}Cl_{3}

dc and ac magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, specific heat, and Raman scattering measurements are combined to probe low-lying spin excitations in α-Ru_{1-x}Ir_{x}Cl_{3} (x≈0.2), which realizes a disordered spin liquid. At intermediate energies (ℏω>3  meV), Raman spectroscopy evidences linearly ω-dependent Majorana-like excitations, obeying Fermi statistics. This points to robustness of a Kitaev paramagnetic state under spin vacancies. At low energies below 3 meV, we observe power-law dependences and quantum-critical-like scalings of the thermodynamic quantities, implying the presence of a weakly divergent low-energy density of states. This scaling phenomenology is interpreted in terms of the random hoppings of Majorana fermions. Our results demonstrate an emergent hierarchy of spin excitations in a diluted Kitaev honeycomb system subject to spin vacancies and bond randomness.

Weak-field induced nonmagnetic state in a Co-based honeycomb

Layered honeycomb magnets are of interest as potential realizations of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid (KQSL), a quantum state with long-range spin entanglement and an exactly solvable Hamiltonian. Conventional magnetically ordered states are present for all currently known candidate materials, however, because non-Kitaev terms in the Hamiltonians obscure the Kitaev physics. Current experimental studies of the KQSL are focused on 4d or 5d transition metal-based honeycombs, in which strong spin-orbit coupling can be expected, yielding Kitaev interaction that dominates in an applied magnetic field. In contrast, for 3d-based layered honeycomb magnets, spin-orbit coupling is weak, and thus, Kitaev physics should be substantially less accessible. Here, we report our studies on BaCo₂(AsO₄)₂, for which we find that the magnetic order associated with the non-Kitaev interactions can be fully suppressed by a relatively low magnetic field, yielding a nonmagnetic material and implying the presence of strong magnetic frustration and weak non-Kitaev interactions.

One Proximate Kitaev Spin Liquid in the K-J-Γ Model on the Honeycomb Lattice

In addition to the Kitaev (K) interaction, candidate Kitaev materials also possess Heisenberg (J) and off-diagonal symmetric (Γ) couplings. We investigate the quantum (S=1/2) K-J-Γ model on the honeycomb lattice by a variational Monte Carlo method. In addition to the "generic" Kitaev spin liquid (KSL), we find that there is just one proximate KSL (PKSL) phase, while the rest of the phase diagram contains different magnetically ordered states. The PKSL is a gapless Z_{2} state with 14 Majorana cones, which in contrast to the KSL has a gapless spin response. In a magnetic field applied normal to the honeycomb plane, it realizes two of Kitaev's gapped chiral spin-liquid phases, of which one is non-Abelian with Chern number ν=5 and the other is Abelian with ν=4. These two phases could be distinguished by their thermal Hall conductance.

Heisenberg-Kitaev physics in magnetic fields

Magnetic insulators in the regime of strong spin-orbit coupling exhibit intriguing behaviors in external magnetic fields, reflecting the frustrated nature of their effective interactions. We review the recent advances in understanding the field responses of materials that are described by models with strongly bond-dependent spin exchange interactions, such as Kitaev's celebrated honeycomb model and its extensions. We discuss the field-induced phases and the complex magnetization processes found in these theories and compare with experimental results in the layered Mott insulators [Formula: see text]-RuCl₃ and Na₂IrO₃, which are believed to realize this fascinating physics.

Sawtooth Torque in Anisotropic j_{eff}=1/2 Magnets: Application to α-RuCl_{3}

The so-called "Kitaev candidate" materials based on 4d^{5} and 5d^{5} metals have recently emerged as magnetic systems displaying strongly anisotropic exchange interactions reminiscent of the Kitaev's honeycomb model. Recently, these materials have been shown to commonly display a distinct sawtooth angular dependence of the magnetic torque over a wide range of magnetic fields. While higher order chiral spin interactions have been considered as a source of this observation, we show here that bilinear anisotropic interactions and/or g anisotropy are each sufficient to explain the observed torque response, which may be distinguished on the basis of high-field measurements. These findings unify the understanding of magnetic torque experiments in a variety of Kitaev candidate materials.

Vestiges of Topological Phase Transitions in Kitaev Quantum Spin Liquids

We investigate signatures of topological quantum phase transitions (TQPTs) between the Z_{2} quantum spin liquids (QSLs). In two spatial dimensions, Z_{2} QSLs and their TQPTs are only well defined at zero temperature (T=0), and it is imperative to clarify their observable signatures under nonzero temperatures. Here, we present the vestiges of TQPTs between Z_{2} QSLs with Majorana fermions in terms of thermal Hall conductivity κ_{xy} at nonzero temperatures. The κ_{xy}/T shows characteristic temperature dependences around TQPTs. We argue that an exponential upturn near T=0 and the peak of κ_{xy}/T around massive excitation energy are observable smoking-gun signals of the TQPTs. Quantum critical fan-shape temperature dependences are uncovered across TQPTs. We also perform the parton mean-field analysis on a modified Kitaev model with next-nearest neighbor interactions finding TQPTs between the phases with different Chern numbers and their vestiges self-consistently. We discuss the implication of our results to the recent experiments in α-RuCl_{3}.

Quasi-degenerate magnetic states in α-RuCl3

Exploring quantum spin liquid (QSL) state has both fundamental scientific value and realistic application potential. Recently, α-RuCl₃ was experimentally observed to hold in-plane zigzag antiferromagnetic (AFM) order at low temperature, which was further proposed to be proximate to a Kitaev QSL ground state. We have studied the magnetic properties of α-RuCl₃ in the framework of electronic structure calculation based on density functional theory (DFT) with Hubbard U correction (DFT+U) and spin-orbit coupling. When the intra-orbital Hubbard interaction U and the inter-orbital Hund's coupling J adopt the commonly accepted values of U = 2.0 eV and J = 0.4 eV, the zigzag AFM order indeed owns the minimum energy, consistent with the experimental observation. More importantly, we find that compared with the ferromagnetic order in the previous theoretical studies, there exist a series of magnetic configurations energetically even closer to the zigzag AFM ground state. The further calculations and analysis indicate that these low-energy magnetic states are closely related to the electronic correlation effect of Ru 4d orbitals. By decreasing U and increasing J with just about 0.2 eV, they become energetically degenerate with the zigzag AFM order, inducing strong magnetic frustration and then yielding a state without long-range magnetic order but with nonzero local moments. Considering the facts that theoretically the pressure usually reduces the intra-orbital Hubbard interaction and meanwhile enhances the inter-orbital Hund's coupling, while experimentally the pressure drives α-RuCl₃ into a quantum disordered phase, our results provide a perspective to understand the exotic magnetic behaviors of α-RuCl₃.

Unusual Thermal Hall Effect in a Kitaev Spin Liquid Candidate α-RuCl_{3}

The Kitaev quantum spin liquid displays the fractionalization of quantum spins into Majorana fermions. The emergent Majorana edge current is predicted to manifest itself in the form of a finite thermal Hall effect, a feature commonly discussed in topological superconductors. Here we report on thermal Hall conductivity κ_{xy} measurements in α-RuCl_{3}, a candidate Kitaev magnet with the two-dimensional honeycomb lattice. In a spin-liquid (Kitaev paramagnetic) state below the temperature characterized by the Kitaev interaction J_{K}/k_{B}∼80  K, positive κ_{xy} develops gradually upon cooling, demonstrating the presence of highly unusual itinerant excitations. Although the zero-temperature property is masked by the magnetic ordering at T_{N}=7  K, the sign, magnitude, and T dependence of κ_{xy}/T at intermediate temperatures follows the predicted trend of the itinerant Majorana excitations.

Dirac and Chiral Quantum Spin Liquids on the Honeycomb Lattice in a Magnetic Field

Motivated by recent experimental observations in α-RuCl_{3}, we study the K-Γ model on the honeycomb lattice in an external magnetic field. By a slave-particle representation and variational Monte Carlo calculations, we reproduce the phase transition from zigzag magnetic order to a field-induced disordered phase. The nature of this state depends crucially on the field orientation. For particular field directions in the honeycomb plane, we find a gapless Dirac spin liquid, in agreement with recent experiments on α-RuCl_{3}. For a range of out-of-plane fields, we predict the existence of a Kalmeyer-Laughlin-type chiral spin liquid, which would show an integer-quantized thermal Hall effect.

Unusual Phonon Heat Transport in α-RuCl_{3}: Strong Spin-Phonon Scattering and Field-Induced Spin Gap

The honeycomb Kitaev-Heisenberg model is a source of a quantum spin liquid with Majorana fermions and gauge flux excitations as fractional quasiparticles. Here we unveil the highly unusual low-temperature heat conductivity κ of α-RuCl_{3}, a prime candidate for realizing such physics: beyond a magnetic field of B_{c}≈7.5  T, κ increases by about one order of magnitude, both for in-plane as well as out-of-plane transport. This clarifies the unusual magnetic field dependence unambiguously to be the result of severe scattering of phonons off putative Kitaev-Heisenberg excitations in combination with a drastic field-induced change of the magnetic excitation spectrum. In particular, an unexpected, large energy gap arises, which increases linearly with the magnetic field, reaching remarkable ℏω_{0}/k_{B}≈50  K at 18 T.

Ultralow-Temperature Thermal Conductivity of the Kitaev Honeycomb Magnet α-RuCl_{3} across the Field-Induced Phase Transition

Recently, there have been increasingly hot debates on whether there exists a quantum spin liquid in the Kitaev honeycomb magnet α-RuCl_{3} in a high magnetic field. To investigate this issue, we perform ultralow-temperature thermal conductivity measurements on single crystals of α-RuCl_{3} down to 80 mK and up to 9 T. Our experiments clearly show a field-induced phase transition occurring at μ_{0}H_{c}≈7.5  T, above which the magnetic order is completely suppressed. The minimum of thermal conductivity at 7.5 T is attributed to the strong scattering of phonons by magnetic fluctuations. Most importantly, above 7.5 T, we do not observe any significant contribution of thermal conductivity from gapless magnetic excitations, which puts a strong constraint on the nature of the high-field phase of α-RuCl_{3}.

Ordered states in the Kitaev-Heisenberg model: From 1D chains to 2D honeycomb

We study the ground state of the 1D Kitaev-Heisenberg (KH) model using the density-matrix renormalization group and Lanczos exact diagonalization methods. We obtain a rich ground-state phase diagram as a function of the ratio between Heisenberg (J = cosϕ) and Kitaev (K = sinϕ) interactions. Depending on the ratio, the system exhibits four long-range ordered states: ferromagnetic-z, ferromagnetic-xy, staggered-xy, Néel-z, and two liquid states: Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid and spiral-xy. The two Kitaev points [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] are singular. The ϕ-dependent phase diagram is similar to that for the 2D honeycomb-lattice KH model. Remarkably, all the ordered states of the honeycomb-lattice KH model can be interpreted in terms of the coupled KH chains. We also discuss the magnetic structure of the K-intercalated RuCl3, a potential Kitaev material, in the framework of the 1D KH model. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the low-lying excitations of the 1D KH Hamiltonian can be explained within the combination of the known six-vertex model and spin-wave theory.

Models and materials for generalized Kitaev magnetism

The exactly solvable Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice has recently received enormous attention linked to the hope of achieving novel spin-liquid states with fractionalized Majorana-like excitations. In this review, we analyze the mechanism proposed by Jackeli and Khaliullin to identify Kitaev materials based on spin-orbital dependent bond interactions and provide a comprehensive overview of its implications in real materials. We set the focus on experimental results and current theoretical understanding of planar honeycomb systems (Na₂IrO₃, α-Li₂IrO₃, and α-RuCl₃), three-dimensional Kitaev materials (β- and γ-Li₂IrO₃), and other potential candidates, completing the review with the list of open questions awaiting new insights.

Gapless Spin Excitations in the Field-Induced Quantum Spin Liquid Phase of α-RuCl_{3}

α-RuCl_{3} is a leading candidate material for the observation of physics related to the Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL). By combined susceptibility, specific-heat, and nuclear-magnetic-resonance measurements, we demonstrate that α-RuCl_{3} undergoes a quantum phase transition to a QSL in a magnetic field of 7.5 T applied in the ab plane. We show further that this high-field QSL phase has gapless spin excitations over a field range up to 16 T. This highly unconventional result, unknown in either Heisenberg or Kitaev magnets, offers insight essential to establishing the physics of α-RuCl_{3}.

Antiferromagnetic Resonance and Terahertz Continuum in α-RuCl_{3}

We report measurements of optical absorption in the zigzag antiferromagnet α-RuCl_{3} as a function of temperature T, magnetic field B, and photon energy ℏω in the range ∼0.3-8.3 meV, using time-domain terahertz spectroscopy. Polarized measurements show that threefold rotational symmetry is broken in the honeycomb plane from 2 to 300 K. We find a sharp absorption peak at 2.56 meV upon cooling below the Néel temperature of 7 K at B=0 that we identify as the magnetic-dipole excitation of a zero-wave-vector magnon, or antiferromagnetic resonance (AFMR). With the application of B, the AFMR broadens and shifts to a lower frequency as long-range magnetic order is lost in a manner consistent with transitioning to a spin-disordered phase. From a direct, internally calibrated measurement of the AFMR spectral weight, we place an upper bound on the contribution to the dc susceptibility from a magnetic excitation continuum.

Thermal Transport in the Kitaev Model

In conventional insulating magnets, heat is carried by magnons and phonons. In contrast, when the magnets harbor a quantum spin liquid state, emergent quasiparticles from the fractionalization of quantum spins can carry heat. Here, we investigate unconventional thermal transport yielded by such exotic carriers, in both longitudinal and transverse components, for the Kitaev model, whose ground state is exactly shown to be a quantum spin liquid with fractional excitations described as itinerant Majorana fermions and localized Z_{2} fluxes. We find that the longitudinal thermal conductivity exhibits a single peak at a high temperature, while the nonzero frequency component has a peak at a low temperature, reflecting the spin fractionalization. On the other hand, we show that the transverse thermal conductivity is induced by the magnetic field in a wide temperature range up to the energy scale of the bare exchange coupling; while increasing temperature, the transverse response divided by temperature decreases from the quantized value expected for the topologically nontrivial ground state and shows nonmonotonic temperature dependence. These characteristic behaviors provide experimentally accessible evidence of fractional excitations in the proximity to the Kitaev quantum spin liquid.
