Revealing the Sub-Barrier Phase using a Spatiotemporal Interferometer with Orthogonal Two-Color Laser Fields of Comparable Intensity

Spatiotemporal imaging and shaping of electron wave functions using novel attoclock interferometry

Electrons detached from atoms by photoionization carry valuable information about light-atom interactions. Characterizing and shaping the electron wave function on its natural timescale is of paramount importance for understanding and controlling ultrafast electron dynamics in atoms, molecules and condensed matter. Here we propose a novel attoclock interferometry to shape and image the electron wave function in atomic photoionization. Using a combination of a strong circularly polarized second harmonic and a weak linearly polarized fundamental field, we spatiotemporally modulate the atomic potential barrier and shape the electron wave functions, which are mapped into a temporal interferometry. By analyzing the two-color phase-resolved and angle-resolved photoelectron interference, we are able to reconstruct the spatiotemporal evolution of the shaping on the amplitude and phase of electron wave function in momentum space within the optical cycle, from which we identify the quantum nature of strong-field ionization and reveal the effect of the spatiotemporal properties of atomic potential on the departing electron. This study provides a new approach for spatiotemporal shaping and imaging of electron wave function in intense light-matter interactions and holds great potential for resolving ultrafast electronic dynamics in molecules, solids, and liquids.

Identifying photoelectron releasing order in strong-field dissociative ionization of H2

Driven by intense laser fields, the outgoing photoelectrons in molecules possess a quiver motion, resulting in the rise of the effective ionization potential. The coupling of the field-dressed ionization potential with abundant molecular dynamics complicates the laser-molecule interactions. Here, we demonstrate an approach to resolve photoelectron releasing order in the dissociative and non-dissociative channels of multiphoton ionization driven by an orthogonally polarized two-color femtosecond laser pulse. The photoelectron kinetic energy releases and the regular nodes in the photoelectron angular distributions due to the participation of different continuum partial waves allow us to deduce the field-dressed ionization potential of various channels. It returns the ponderomotive energy experienced by the outgoing electron and reveals the corresponding photoionization instants within the laser pulse. Our results provide a route to explore the complex strong-field ionization dynamics of molecules using two-dimensional photoelectron momentum spectroscopy.

Strong-Field Ionization of Hydrogen Atoms with Quantum Light

We study the strong-field ionization driven by quantum lights. Developing a quantum-optical-corrected strong-field approximation model, we simulate the photoelectron momentum distribution with squeezed-state light, which manifests as notably different interference structures from that with coherent-state (classical) light. With the saddle-point method, we analyze the electron dynamics and reveal that the photon statistics of squeezed-state light fields endows the tunneling electron wave packets with a time-varying phase uncertainty and modulates the photoelectron intracycle and intercycle interferences. Moreover, it is found the fluctuation of quantum light imprints significant influence on the propagation of tunneling electron wave packets, in which the ionization probability of electrons is considerably modified in time domain.

Orbital-resolved photoelectron momentum distributions of F- ions in a counter-rotating bicircular field

We present a theoretical study of the orbital-resolved photoelectron momentum distributions (PMDs) of F^- ions by a two-color counter-rotating circularly polarized field. We show that the PMDs of F^- ions can be modulated from an isotropic symmetric distribution into a three-lobe one by adding a weak fundamental counter-rotating field to the intense second harmonic circularly polarized field, and this modulation strongly depends on the initial atomic orbital. The PMDs simulated by the strong-field approximation method show good agreement with those obtained by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. Based on the strong-field approximation method, we find that the radial momentum shift of PMDs for different orbitals is the fingerprint of orbital-dependent initial momentum at the tunnel exit. More importantly, we demonstrate that the lobes in PMDs appear in sequential order, highlighting that the scheme can be viewed as controllable rotating temporal Young's two-slit interferometer.

Releasable Water Charge-Trapping and Water-Resistant Photodetection using 1D Perovskitoid Hydrate Single Crystal

Hydrates of hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites have been discovered with MAPbI₃ and are proved to be unstable in atmosphere. However, the influence of water molecules on the performance of optoelectronic devices is still not fully understood. Here, using a dication, 2-(dimethylamino) ethylamine (DMEN²⁺ ), a stable quasi-1D perovskitoid hydrate single crystal is designed and successfully synthesized, which is formulated as DMENPb₂ I₆ ·H₂ O. In this design, both corner-sharing and edge-sharing connectivity are adopted, and water molecules are connected with the crystal through hydrogen bonding. It is discovered that such water sites distributed along the inorganic chains function both as charge traps and as releasable charge stocks. Optical excitation that overcomes the potential wells formed on these water sites may release these stocked charges and facilitate enhanced transportable charge density. Meanwhile, exciton diffusion and charge transport are strongly confined in the 1D transport channels. Above mechanisms are verified both by the transient absorption spectroscopy and by the photodetection performance. This introduces a new design strategy with a trapping-stock-releasing-transport roadmap for perovskitoid materials. Excellent water resistance endows this material with more advantages in the development of a new generation of optoelectronic devices.

Picometer-Resolved Photoemission Position within the Molecule by Strong-Field Photoelectron Holography

Laser-induced tunneling ionization is one of the fundamental light-matter interaction processes. An accurate description of the tunnel-ionized electron wave packet is central to understanding and controlling subsequent electron dynamics. Because of the anisotropic molecular structure, tunneling ionization of molecules involves considerable challenges in accurately describing the tunneling electron wave packet. Up to now, some basic properties of the tunneling electron from molecules still remain unexplored. Here, we demonstrate that the tunneling electron from a molecule is not always emitted from the geometric center of the molecule along the tunnel direction. Rather, the photoemission position depends on the molecular orientation. Using a photoelectron holographic technique, we determine the photoemission position for a nitrogen molecule relative to the molecular geometric center to be 95±21  pm when the molecular axis is oriented along the tunnel direction. Our Letter poses, and answers experimentally, a fundamental question as to where the molecular photoionization actually begins, which has significant implications for time-resolved probing of valence electron dynamics in molecules.

Analyzing the electron trajectories in strong-field tunneling ionization with the phase-of-the-phase spectroscopy

By numerically solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, we theoretically study strong-field tunneling ionization of Ar atom in the parallel two-color field which consists of a strong fundamental pulse and a much weaker second harmonic component. Based on the quantum orbits concept, we analyzed the photoelectron momentum distributions with the phase-of-the-phase spectroscopy, and the relative contributions of the two parts of the photoelectrons produced during the rising and falling edges of the adjacent quarters of the laser cycle are identified successfully. Our results show that the relative contributions of these two parts depend on both of the transverse and longitude momenta. By comparing the results from model atoms with Coulomb potential and short-range potential, the role of the long-range Coulomb interaction on the relative contributions of these two parts of electrons is revealed. Additionally, we show that the effects of Coulomb interaction on ionization time are vital for identifying their relative contributions.

It is all about phases: ultrafast holographic photoelectron imaging

Photoelectron holography constitutes a powerful tool for the ultrafast imaging of matter, as it combines high electron currents with subfemtosecond resolution, and gives information about transition amplitudes and phase shifts. Similarly to light holography, it uses the phase difference between the probe and the reference waves associated with qualitatively different ionization events for the reconstruction of the target and for ascertaining any changes that may occur. These are major advantages over other attosecond imaging techniques, which require elaborate interferometric schemes in order to extract phase differences. For that reason, ultrafast photoelectron holography has experienced a huge growth in activity, which has led to a vast, but fragmented landscape. The present review is an organizational effort towards unifying this landscape. This includes a historic account in which a connection with laser-induced electron diffraction is established, a summary of the main holographic structures encountered and their underlying physical mechanisms, a broad discussion of the theoretical methods employed, and of the key challenges and future possibilities. We delve deeper in our own work, and place a strong emphasis on quantum interference, and on the residual Coulomb potential.

Unifying Tunneling Pictures of Strong-Field Ionization with an Improved Attoclock

We demonstrate a novel attoclock, in which we add a perturbative linearly polarized light field at 400 nm to calibrate the attoclock constructed by an intense circularly polarized field at 800 nm. This approach can be directly implemented to analyze the recent hot and controversial topics involving strong-field tunneling ionization. The generally accepted picture is that tunneling ionization is instantaneous and that the tunneling probability synchronizes with the laser electric field. Alternatively, recently it was described in the Wigner picture that tunneling ionization would occur with a certain of time delay. We unify the two seemingly opposite viewpoints within one theoretical framework, i.e., the strong-field approximation (SFA). We illustrate that both the instantaneous tunneling picture and the Wigner time delay picture that are derived from the SFA can interpret the measurement well. Our results show that the finite tunneling delay will accompany nonzero exit longitudinal momenta. This is not the case for the instantaneous tunneling picture, where the most probable exit longitudinal momentum would be zero.

Angular resolved above-threshold ionization spectrum of an atom in IR+XUV orthogonally polarized two-color laser fields

We investigate the above-threshold ionization (ATI) process of atoms exposed to the IR+XUV orthogonally polarized two-color laser fields by using the frequency-domain theory. It is shown that there exists a dip structure in each plateau of the angular resolved ATI spectrum. The dip structure in the first plateau is attributed to the fact that the electron cannot absorb one XUV photon when its emission direction is perpendicular to the XUV laser polarization, while the one in the second plateau is attributed to the coherent results of different channels. The emergence of dip structure is associated directly with the XUV laser field. Furthermore, by applying the saddle-point approximation, it is found that the fringes on the spectrum is caused by the interference of two trajectories for different saddle-points in the IR laser field. Finally, it is found that, in the high energy region, the probability of ATI spectrum is mainly determined by the XUV laser field, and the width of each plateau is mainly determined by the IR laser field; on the other hand, the ATI spectrum of the low energy region is only determined by the IR laser field.

Photoelectron Holographic Interferometry to Probe the Longitudinal Momentum Offset at the Tunnel Exit

Laser-induced electron tunneling underlies numerous emerging spectroscopic techniques to probe attosecond electron dynamics in atoms and molecules. The improvement of those techniques requires an accurate knowledge of the exit momentum for the tunneling wave packet. Here we demonstrate a photoelectron interferometric scheme to probe the electron momentum longitudinal to the tunnel direction at the tunnel exit by measuring the photoelectron holographic pattern in an orthogonally polarized two-color laser pulse. In this scheme, we use a perturbative 400-nm laser field to modulate the photoelectron holographic fringes generated by a strong 800-nm pulse. The fringe shift offers direct experimental access to the intermediate canonical momentum of the rescattering electron, allowing us to reconstruct the momentum offset at the tunnel exit with high accuracy. Our result unambiguously proves the existence of nonzero initial longitudinal momentum at the tunnel exit and provides fundamental insights into the nonquasistatic nature of the strong-field tunneling.

Universal Description of the Attoclock with Two-Color Corotating Circular Fields

We experimentally measure the laser-intensity-dependent photoelectron momentum distributions (PMDs) of Ar atoms with two-color (ω+2ω) corotating circularly polarized fields. The interference patterns on PMDs reveal complex structures with respect to the laser intensity ratio. The main above-threshold ionization peaks and sidebands on PMD distribute oppositely when the fundamental field is much weaker than the second-harmonic field, and the PMD reveals a characteristic single-lobe distribution when the two colors have comparable intensities. Using strong-field approximation, we analytically explain how the interference pattern on PMD evolves with respect to the relative laser intensity. By analyzing the interference pattern, we reveal the phase difference and the temporal evolution of the emitting electron wave packets. We show that, when monitoring the intensity ratio, the double-pointer attoclock geometry with corotating circular fields can be universally mimicked as the spatially rotating temporal double-slit experiments with the variable slit width, which can be used to probe and control strong-field ionization.

Determination of the Ionization Time Using Attosecond Photoelectron Interferometry

Laser-induced electron tunneling ionization from atoms and molecules plays as the trigger for a broad class of interesting strong-field phenomena in attosecond community. Understanding the time of electron tunneling ionization is vital to achieving the ultimate accuracy in attosecond metrology. We propose a novel attosecond photoelectron interferometer, which is based on the interference of the direct and near-forward rescattering electron wave packets, to determine the time information characterizing the tunneling process. Adding a weak perturbation in orthogonal to the strong fundamental field, the phases of the direct and the near-forward rescattering electron wave packets are modified, leading to the shift of the interferogram in the photoelectron momentum distributions. By analyzing the response of the interferogram to the perturbation, the real part of the ionization time, which denotes the instant when the electron exits the potential barrier, and the associated rescattering time are precisely retrieved. Moreover, the imaginary part of the ionization time, which has been interpreted as a quantity related to electron motion under the potential barrier, is also unambiguously determined.

Direct Experimental Access to the Nonadiabatic Initial Momentum Offset upon Tunnel Ionization

We report on the nonadiabatic offset of the initial electron momentum distribution in the plane of polarization upon single ionization of argon by strong field tunneling and show how to experimentally control the degree of nonadiabaticity. Two-color counter- and corotating fields (390 and 780 nm) are compared to show that the nonadiabatic offset strongly depends on the temporal evolution of the laser electric field. We introduce a simple method for the direct access to the nonadiabatic offset using two-color counter- and corotating fields. Further, for a single-color circularly polarized field at 780 nm, we show that the radius of the experimentally observed donutlike distribution increases for increasing momentum in the light propagation direction. Our observed initial momentum offsets are well reproduced by the strong-field approximation. A mechanistic picture is introduced that links the measured nonadiabatic offset to the magnetic quantum number of virtually populated intermediate states.

Photoelectron momentum distributions of F- ions by a few-cycle laser pulse

The two-dimensional photoelectron momentum distributions (PMD) of F^- ions induced by a linearly polarized few-cycle laser pulse are analyzed with the saddle-point (SP) method. The validity of the SP method is confirmed by comparing the PMD with those obtained from direct numerical integration of the transition probability amplitude in the context of strong-field approximation (SFA). We analyze the intra- and inter-cycle interference patterns in the two-dimensional PMD and show that the two-dimensional PMD can be effectively monitored by changing the carrier-envelope phase of few-cycle laser pulse. In addition, by separately calculating the two-dimensional PMD formed in the different detachment steps, we find that the rich oscillatory patterns in the two-dimensional PMD can be mainly attributed to the interference effects of electronic wave packets in the classical propagation step after the ionization, and part of intra-cycle interference fringes' shape is affected by the sub-barrier phase.

Disentangling Intracycle Interferences in Photoelectron Momentum Distributions Using Orthogonal Two-Color Laser Fields

We use orthogonally polarized two-color (OTC) laser pulses to separate quantum paths in the multiphoton ionization of Ar atoms. Our OTC pulses consist of 400 and 800 nm light at a relative intensity ratio of 10∶1. We find a hitherto unobserved interference in the photoelectron momentum distribution, which exhibits a strong dependence on the relative phase of the OTC pulse. Analysis of model calculations reveals that the interference is caused by quantum pathways from nonadjacent quarter cycles.
