Magneto-Optical Detection of the Spin Hall Effect in Pt and W Thin Films

Spin-Orbit Torque Vector Quantification in Nanoscale Magnetic Tunnel Junctions

Spin-orbit torques (SOT) allow ultrafast, energy-efficient toggling of magnetization state by an in-plane charge current for applications such as magnetic random-access memory (SOT-MRAM). Tailoring the SOT vector comprising of antidamping (TAD) and fieldlike (TFL) torques could lead to faster, more reliable, and low-power SOT-MRAM. Here, we establish a method to quantify the longitudinal (TAD) and transverse (TFL) components of the SOT vector and its efficiency χAD and χFL, respectively, in nanoscale three-terminal SOT magnetic tunnel junctions (SOT-MTJ). Modulation of nucleation or switching field (BSF) for magnetization reversal by SOT effective fields (BSOT) leads to the modification of SOT-MTJ hysteresis loop behavior from which χAD and χFL are quantified. Surprisingly, in nanoscale W/CoFeB SOT-MTJ, we find χFL to be (i) twice as large as χAD and (ii) 6 times as large as χFL in micrometer-sized W/CoFeB Hall-bar devices. Our quantification is supported by micromagnetic and macrospin simulations which reproduce experimental SOT-MTJ Stoner-Wohlfarth astroid behavior only for χFL > χAD. Additionally, from the threshold current for current-induced magnetization switching with a transverse magnetic field, we show that in SOT-MTJ, TFL plays a more prominent role in magnetization dynamics than TAD. Due to SOT-MRAM geometry and nanodimensionality, the potential role of nonlocal spin Hall spin current accumulated adjacent to the SOT-MTJ in the mediation of TFL and χFL amplification merits to be explored.

Observation of Terahertz Spin Hall Conductivity Spectrum in GaAs with Optical Spin Injection

We report the first observation of the spin Hall conductivity spectrum in GaAs at room temperature. Our terahertz polarimetry with a precision of several μrads resolves the Faraday rotation of terahertz pulses arising from the inverse spin Hall effect of optically injected spin-polarized electrons. The obtained spin Hall conductivity spectrum exhibits an excellent quantitative agreement with theory, demonstrating a crossover in the dominant origin from impurity scattering in the dc regime to the intrinsic Berry-curvature mechanism in the terahertz regime. Our spectroscopic technique opens a new pathway to analyze anomalous transports related to spin, valley, or orbital degrees of freedom.

Phase biasing of a Josephson junction using Rashba-Edelstein effect

A charge-current-induced shift in the spin-locked Fermi surface leads to a non-equilibrium spin density at a Rashba interface, commonly known as the Rashba-Edelstein effect. Since this is an intrinsically interfacial property, direct detection of the spin moment is difficult. Here we demonstrate that a planar Josephson Junction, realized by placing two closely spaced superconducting electrodes over a Rashba interface, allows for a direct detection of the spin moment as an additional phase in the junction. Asymmetric Fraunhofer patterns obtained for Nb-(Pt/Cu)-Nb nano-junctions, due to the locking of Rashba-Edelstein spin moment to the flux quantum in the junction, provide clear signatures of this effect. This simple experiment offers a fresh perspective on direct detection of spin polarization induced by various spin-orbit effects. In addition, this platform also offers a magnetic-field-controlled phase biasing mechanism in conjunction with the Rashba-Edelstein spin-orbit effect for superconducting quantum circuits.

Magneto-Optical Detection of the Orbital Hall Effect in Chromium

The orbital Hall effect has been theoretically predicted but its direct observation is a challenge. Here, we report the magneto-optical detection of current-induced orbital accumulation at the surface of a light 3d transition metal, Cr. The orbital polarization is in-plane, transverse to the current direction, and scales linearly with current density, consistent with the orbital Hall effect. Comparing the thickness-dependent magneto-optical measurements with ab initio calculations, we estimate an orbital diffusion length in Cr of 6.6±0.6  nm.

Observation of the orbital Hall effect in a light metal Ti

The orbital Hall effect¹ refers to the generation of electron orbital angular momentum flow transverse to an external electric field. Contrary to the common belief that the orbital angular momentum is quenched in solids, theoretical studies^2,3 predict that the orbital Hall effect can be strong and is a fundamental origin of the spin Hall effect^4-7 in many transition metals. Despite the growing circumstantial evidence^8-11, its direct detection remains elusive. Here we report the magneto-optical observation of the orbital Hall effect in the light metal titanium (Ti). The Kerr rotation by the orbital magnetic moment accumulated at Ti surfaces owing to the orbital Hall current is measured, and the result agrees with theoretical calculations semi-quantitatively and is supported by the orbital torque¹² measurement in Ti-based magnetic heterostructures. This result confirms the orbital Hall effect and indicates that the orbital angular momentum is an important dynamic degree of freedom in solids. Moreover, this calls for renewed studies of the orbital effect on other degrees of freedom such as spin^2,3,13,14, valley^15,16, phonon^17-19 and magnon^20,21 dynamics.

Significant Role of Interfacial Spin-Orbit Coupling in the Spin-to-Charge Conversion in Pt/NiFe Heterostructure

For the spin-to-charge conversion (SCC) in heavy metal/ferromagnet (HM/FM) heterostructure, the contribution of interfacial spin-orbit coupling (SOC) remains controversial. Here, we investigate the SCC process of the Pt/NiFe heterostructure by the spin pumping in YIG/Pt/NiFe/IrMn multilayers. Due to the exchange bias of NiFe/IrMn structure, the NiFe magnetization can be switched between magnetically unsaturated and saturated states by opposite resonance fields of YIG layer. The spin-pumping signal is found to decrease significantly when the NiFe magnetization is changed from the saturated state to the unsaturated state. Theoretical analysis indicates that the interfacial spin absorption is enhanced for the above-mentioned NiFe magnetic state change, which results in the increased and decreased spin flow in the Pt layer and across the Pt/NiFe interface, respectively. These results demonstrate that in our case the interfacial SOC effect at the Pt/NiFe interface is dominant over the bulk inverse spin Hall effect in the Pt layer. Our work reveals a significant role of interfacial SOC in the SCC in HM/FM heterostructure, which can promote the development of high-efficiency spintronic devices through interfacial engineering.

Helicity dependent photoresistance measurement vs. beam-shift thermal gradient

Optical detection techniques are among the most powerful methods used to characterize spintronic phenomena. The spin orientation can affect the light polarization, which, by the reciprocal mechanism, can modify the spin density. Numerous recent experiments, report local changes in the spin density induced by a circularly polarized focused laser beam. These effects are typically probed electrically, by detecting the variations of the photoresistance or photocurrent associated to the reversal of the light helicity. Here we show that in general, when the light helicity is modified, the beam profile is slightly altered, and the barycenter of the laser spot is displaced. Consequently, the temperature gradients produced by the laser heating will be modulated, producing thermo-electric signals that alternate in phase with the light polarization. These unintended signals, having no connection with the electron spin, appear under the same experimental conditions and can be easily misinterpreted. We show how this contribution can be experimentally assessed and removed from the measured data. We find that even when the beam profile is optimized, this effect is large, and completely overshadows the spin related signals in all the materials and experimental conditions that we have tested.

Many recent studies have explored the response of magnetic systems to circularly polarised light. To achieve this, typically experiments use a birefringent crystal. Here, Yang et al show that any small error in the alignment of the crystal can result in a beam shift, and this shift can lead to spurious signals similar yet unrelated to the electron spin.

Berry curvature-induced local spin polarisation in gated graphene/WTe2 heterostructures

Experimental control of local spin-charge interconversion is of primary interest for spintronics. Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures combining graphene with a strongly spin-orbit coupled two-dimensional (2D) material enable such functionality by design. Electric spin valve experiments have thus far provided global information on such devices, while leaving the local interplay between symmetry breaking, charge flow across the heterointerface and aspects of topology unexplored. Here, we probe the gate-tunable local spin polarisation in current-driven graphene/WTe₂ heterostructures through magneto-optical Kerr microscopy. Even for a nominal in-plane transport, substantial out-of-plane spin accumulation is induced by a corresponding out-of-plane current flow. We present a theoretical model which fully explains the gate- and bias-dependent onset and spatial distribution of the intense Kerr signal as a result of a non-linear anomalous Hall effect in the heterostructure, which is enabled by its reduced point group symmetry. Our findings unravel the potential of 2D heterostructure engineering for harnessing topological phenomena for spintronics, and constitute an important step toward nanoscale, electrical spin control.

Spin-based electronics offers significantly improved efficiency, but a major challenge is the electric manipulation of spin. Here, Powalla et al find a large gate induced spinpolarization in graphene/WTe2 heterostructures, illustrating the potential of such heterostructures for spintronics.

Magnetic Topological Insulator Heterostructures: A Review

Topological insulators (TIs) provide intriguing prospects for the future of spintronics due to their large spin-orbit coupling and dissipationless, counter-propagating conduction channels in the surface state. The combination of topological properties and magnetic order can lead to new quantum states including the quantum anomalous Hall effect that was first experimentally realized in Cr-doped (Bi,Sb)₂ Te₃ films. Since magnetic doping can introduce detrimental effects, requiring very low operational temperatures, alternative approaches are explored. Proximity coupling to magnetically ordered systems is an obvious option, with the prospect to raise the temperature for observing the various quantum effects. Here, an overview of proximity coupling and interfacial effects in TI heterostructures is presented, which provides a versatile materials platform for tuning the magnetic and topological properties of these exciting materials. An introduction is first given to the heterostructure growth by molecular beam epitaxy and suitable structural, electronic, and magnetic characterization techniques. Going beyond transition-metal-doped and undoped TI heterostructures, examples of heterostructures are discussed, including rare-earth-doped TIs, magnetic insulators, and antiferromagnets, which lead to exotic phenomena such as skyrmions and exchange bias. Finally, an outlook on novel heterostructures such as intrinsic magnetic TIs and systems including 2D materials is given.

Spin-Flip Diffusion Length in 5d Transition Metal Elements: A First-Principles Benchmark

Little is known about the spin-flip diffusion length l_{sf}, one of the most important material parameters in the field of spintronics. We use a density-functional-theory based scattering approach to determine values of l_{sf} that result from electron-phonon scattering as a function of temperature for all 5d transition metal elements. l_{sf} does not decrease monotonically with the atomic number Z but is found to be inversely proportional to the density of states at the Fermi level. By using the same local current methodology to calculate the spin Hall angle Θ_{sH} that characterizes the efficiency of the spin Hall effect, we show that the products ρ(T)l_{sf}(T) and Θ_{sH}(T)l_{sf}(T) are constant.

Frequency-Independent Terahertz Anomalous Hall Effect in DyCo5 , Co32 Fe68 , and Gd27 Fe73 Thin Films from DC to 40 THz

The anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is a fundamental spintronic charge-to-charge-current conversion phenomenon and closely related to spin-to-charge-current conversion by the spin Hall effect. Future high-speed spintronic devices will crucially rely on such conversion phenomena at terahertz (THz) frequencies. Here, it is revealed that the AHE remains operative from DC up to 40 THz with a flat frequency response in thin films of three technologically relevant magnetic materials: DyCo₅ , Co₃₂ Fe₆₈ , and Gd₂₇ Fe₇₃ . The frequency-dependent conductivity-tensor elements σ_xx and σ_yx  are measured, and good agreement with DC measurements is found. The experimental findings are fully consistent with ab initio calculations of σ_yx for CoFe and highlight the role of the large Drude scattering rate (≈100 THz) of metal thin films, which smears out any sharp spectral features of the THz AHE. Finally, it is found that the intrinsic contribution to the THz AHE dominates over the extrinsic mechanisms for the Co₃₂ Fe₆₈ sample. The results imply that the AHE and related effects such as the spin Hall effect are highly promising ingredients of future THz spintronic devices reliably operating from DC to 40 THz and beyond.

Rashba Effect in Functional Spintronic Devices

Exploiting spin transport increases the functionality of electronic devices and enables such devices to overcome physical limitations related to speed and power. Utilizing the Rashba effect at the interface of heterostructures provides promising opportunities toward the development of high-performance devices because it enables electrical control of the spin information. Herein, the focus is mainly on progress related to the two most compelling devices that exploit the Rashba effect: spin transistors and spin-orbit torque devices. For spin field-effect transistors, the gate-voltage manipulation of the Rashba effect and subsequent control of the spin precession are discussed, including for all-electric spin field-effect transistors. For spin-orbit torque devices, recent theories and experiments on interface-generated spin current are discussed. The future directions of manipulating the Rashba effect to realize fully integrated spin logic and memory devices are also discussed.

Extreme anti-reflection enhanced magneto-optic Kerr effect microscopy

Magnetic and spintronic media have offered fundamental scientific subjects and technological applications. Magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE) microscopy provides the most accessible platform to study the dynamics of spins, magnetic quasi-particles, and domain walls. However, in the research of nanoscale spin textures and state-of-the-art spintronic devices, optical techniques are generally restricted by the extremely weak magneto-optical activity and diffraction limit. Highly sophisticated, expensive electron microscopy and scanning probe methods thus have come to the forefront. Here, we show that extreme anti-reflection (EAR) dramatically improves the performance and functionality of MOKE microscopy. For 1-nm-thin Co film, we demonstrate a Kerr amplitude as large as 20° and magnetic domain imaging visibility of 0.47. Especially, EAR-enhanced MOKE microscopy enables real-time detection and statistical analysis of sub-wavelength magnetic domain reversals. Furthermore, we exploit enhanced magneto-optic birefringence and demonstrate analyser-free MOKE microscopy. The EAR technique is promising for optical investigations and applications of nanomagnetic systems.

Phonon Angular Momentum Hall Effect

The spin Hall effect is the transverse flow of the electron spin in response to an external electric field. Similarly, the temperature gradient in magnets can drive a transverse flow of the magnon spin, which provides a thermal alternative for spin manipulation. Recently, phonon angular momentum (PAM), the angular momentum of atoms resulting from their orbital motion around their equilibrium positions, has garnered attention as a quantity analogous to the magnon spin. Here, we report that the temperature gradient generally induces a transverse flow of PAM, which we term the phonon angular momentum Hall effect (PAMHE). The PAMHE arises whenever there are transverse and longitudinal acoustic phonons, and it is therefore ubiquitous in condensed matter systems. As a consequence of the PAMHE, PAM accumulates at the crystal edges. When the atoms in the crystal carry a non-zero Born effective charge, the edge PAM induces edge magnetization, which can be observed through optical measurement.

Magneto-Optical Tools to Study Effects in Dirac and Weyl Semimetals

Research regarding topological Dirac and Weyl semimetals contributes to our understanding not only of the field of solid-state physics, but also the field of high-energy physics as the physics of Dirac and Weyl semimetals resembles the physics of Dirac and Weyl massless fermions. In condensed matter physics, the Weyl nodes are detached in momentum space and may be realized as emergent quasiparticles with a distinct chirality, left-handed or right-handed. These states lead to phenomena like the chiral anomaly and the anomalous Hall effect (AHE). Furthermore, the combination of quantum effects and magnetic effects in magnetic Weyl semimetals is very intriguing. Magneto-optical tools, which are usually used to study magnetic phenomena, also contribute to magnetic Weyl semimetals. Moreover, with the magneto-optical technique, it is possible to follow the dynamics of the processes and to study the lifetime of the Weyl states. In this work, we review and discuss the effects of using magneto-optical tools for studying quantum effects like the chiral anomaly or magnetic effects in magnetic Weyl and Dirac systems using the magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) or Faraday systems including a single detection and imaging. Examples of using magneto-optical systems in the research of ultrafast magnetic dynamics of thin polycrystalline nickel and permaloy are reviewed as are the magnetic spatial dynamics by employing magneto-optical Kerr or Faraday microscopy tools with ferromagnetic thin films. Interestingly, the excitation of a circularly polarized femtosecond laser pulse could lead to the breakage of time-reversal symmetry and to the transformation of the Dirac state to the Floquet–Weyl semimetal state. The development of a suitable ultrafast magneto-optical system for Weyl systems is discussed, and the practical difficulties for the realization of such a system are considered.

Spin-Dependent Processes Measured without a Permanent Magnet

A novel Hall circuit design that can be incorporated into a working electrode, which is used to probe spin-selective charge transfer and charge displacement processes, is reviewed herein. The general design of a Hall circuit based on a semiconductor heterostructure, which forms a shallow 2D electron gas and is used as an electrode, is described. Three different types of spin-selective processes have been studied with this device in the past: i) photoinduced charge exchange between quantum dots and the working electrode through chiral molecules is associated with spin polarization that creates a local magnetization and generates a Hall voltage; ii) charge polarization of chiral molecules by an applied voltage is accompanied by a spin polarization that generates a Hall voltage; and iii) cyclic voltammetry (current-voltage) measurements of electrochemical redox reactions that can be spin-analyzed by the Hall circuit to provide a third dimension (spin) in addition to the well-known current and voltage dimensions. The three studies reviewed open new doors into understanding both the spin current and the charge current in electronic materials and electrochemical processes.

Intrinsic Spin and Orbital Hall Effects from Orbital Texture

We show theoretically that both the intrinsic spin Hall effect (SHE) and orbital Hall effect (OHE) can arise in centrosymmetric systems through momentum-space orbital texture, which is ubiquitous even in centrosymmetric systems unlike spin texture. The OHE occurs even without spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and is converted into the SHE through SOC. The resulting spin Hall conductivity is large (comparable to that of Pt) but depends on the SOC strength in a nonmonotonic way. This mechanism is stable against orbital quenching. This work suggests a path for an ongoing search for materials with stronger SHE. It also calls for experimental efforts to probe orbital degrees of freedom in the OHE and SHE. Possible ways for experimental detection are briefly discussed.

Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect Driven by Spin Accumulation on Cu, Au, and Pt

The magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) has recently been achieved on non-ferromagnetic metals by injecting spin currents. To use the magneto-optical Kerr effect as a quantitative tool, it is crucial to study the relationship between the Kerr rotation angle and the spin accumulation on non-ferromagnets. In this work, I measure a transient magneto-optical Kerr rotation on non-ferromagnetic metals of Cu, Au, and Pt driven by an ultrafast spin current from an adjacent ferromagnetic metal. Through comparing the measured Kerr rotation and the calculated spin accumulation, I determine the conversion ratio between the Kerr rotation and the spin accumulation to be: −4 × 10−9 (real part), −2.5 × 10−8 (real part), and −3 × 10−9 (imaginary part) rad m A−1 for Cu, Au, and Pt, respectively, at a wavelength of 784 nm.

Direct visualization of current-induced spin accumulation in topological insulators

Charge-to-spin conversion in various materials is the key for the fundamental understanding of spin-orbitronics and efficient magnetization manipulation. Here we report the direct spatial imaging of current-induced spin accumulation at the channel edges of Bi2Se3 and BiSbTeSe2 topological insulators as well as Pt by a scanning photovoltage microscope at room temperature. The spin polarization is along the out-of-plane direction with opposite signs for the two channel edges. The accumulated spin direction reverses sign upon changing the current direction and the detected spin signal shows a linear dependence on the magnitude of currents, indicating that our observed phenomena are current-induced effects. The spin Hall angle of Bi2Se3, BiSbTeSe2, and Pt is determined to be 0.0085, 0.0616, and 0.0085, respectively. Our results open up the possibility of optically detecting the current-induced spin accumulations, and thus point towards a better understanding of the interaction between spins and circularly polarized light.

Evidence for Dyakonov-Perel-like Spin Relaxation in Pt

We utilize nanoscale spin valves with Pt spacer layers to characterize spin relaxation in Pt. Analysis of the spin lifetime indicates that Elliott-Yafet spin scattering is dominant at room temperature, but an unexpected intrinsic Dyakonov-Perel-like spin relaxation becomes dominant at cryogenic temperatures. We also observe suppression of spin relaxation in a Pt layer interfaced with a ferromagnet, likely caused by the competition between the effective exchange and spin-orbit fields.

Twofold stationary states in the classical spin-Hall effect

The stationary states occurring in spin-Hall devices are investigated within the framework of the phenomenological two spin-channel model. It is shown that two different stationary states can be defined, which depends on the redistribution of the electric charges between the two spin-channels during the transient time. A first stationary state can be reached if the charge accumulation occurs inside each spin channel independently, while a second stationary state is reached if the two spin channels are undifferentiated from the point of view of the electric charge accumulation. The screening equations that describe the accumulation of electric charges due to spin-orbit coupling are derived in both cases, and the two stationary states are discussed in terms of the Dyakonov-Perel transport equations. It is shown that the equations should be generalized to spin-dependent electric fields in order to take into account the first stationary state. In both cases, the phenomenology is compatible with experimental observations.
