Real-Time Observation of Molecular Spinning with Angular High-Harmonic Spectroscopy

Filming movies of attosecond charge migration in single molecules with high harmonic spectroscopy

Electron migration in molecules is the progenitor of chemical reactions and biological functions after light-matter interaction. Following this ultrafast dynamics, however, has been an enduring endeavor. Here we demonstrate that, by using machine learning algorithm to analyze high-order harmonics generated by two-color laser pulses, we are able to retrieve the complex amplitudes and phases of harmonics of single fixed-in-space molecules. These complex dipoles enable us to construct movies of laser-driven electron migration after tunnel ionization of N₂ and CO₂ molecules at time steps of 50 attoseconds. Moreover, the angular dependence of the migration dynamics is fully resolved. By examining the movies, we observe that electron holes do not just migrate along the laser polarization direction, but may swirl around the atom centers. Our result establishes a general scheme for studying ultrafast electron dynamics in molecules, paving a way for further advance in tracing and controlling photochemical reactions by femtosecond lasers.

Visualization of the Preacceleration Process for High-Harmonic Generation in Solids

The high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in ZnO is investigated by numerically solving semiconductor Bloch equations (SBEs), which can be explained well by a four-step model. In this model, preacceleration is the first step, in which the electron is accelerated in the valence band until it reaches the point of the minimum band gap. To prove the existence of the preacceleration process, SBE-based k-resolved harmonic spectra and the transient conduction-band population are presented. The results show that the contribution of crystal-momentum channels away from the minimum band gap via preacceleration is non-negligible. Furthermore, the X-shaped distribution in the k-resolved spectra can be described well by the preacceleration process. Based on the above analysis, we can conclude that the preacceleration process plays an important role in HHG.

Tracing the Coherent Manipulation of Rotational Dynamics by Shaped Femtosecond Pulse-Induced Two-Dimensional Rotational Coherent Spectrum

The temporal delayed orthogonal pulse pairs generated by the phase shaping technique are used to study the coherent control of the rotational wave packet dynamics in air. By continuously changing the intrapulse delay of the pump pulse, we measured the corresponding revival signals and obtained a two-dimensional rotational coherent spectrum (2D RCS). An additive property of the rotational dynamics is observed from the revival signals. Moreover, combining with the coherent control model, we find that the 2D RCS can be used to demonstrate the control over the underlying Raman rotational excitation. A beat frequency-dependent oscillation of each rotational transition is obtained. The transition process is revealed from the Fourier transformation about the pump delay. The scheme of this work can be used for further control and detection of the rotational wave packet and can be extended to other molecular dynamic researches.

Multilevel quantum interference in the formation of high-order fractional molecular alignment echoes

We theoretically investigate the formation of the high-order fractional alignment echo in OCS molecule and systematically study the dependence of echo intensity on the intensities and time delay of the two excitation pulses. Our simulations reveal an intricate dependence of the intensity of high-order fractional alignment echo on the laser conditions. Based on the analysis with rotational density matrix, this intricate dependence is further demonstrated to arise from the interference of multiple quantum pathways that involve multilevel rotational transitions. Our result provides a comprehensive multilevel picture of the quantum dynamics of high-order fractional alignment echo in molecular ensembles, which will facilitate the development of "rotational echo spectroscopy."

Measuring the rotational temperature and pump intensity in molecular alignment experiments via high harmonic generation

We demonstrate a method to simultaneously measure the rotational temperature and pump intensity in laser-induced molecular alignment by the time-resolved high harmonic spectroscopy (HHS). It relies on the sensitive dependence of the arising times of the local minima and maxima of the harmonic yields at the rotational revivals on the pump intensity and rotational temperature. By measuring the arising times of these local extrema from the time-resolved harmonic signals, the rotational temperature and pump intensity can be accurately measured. We have demonstrated our method using N₂ molecules. The validity and robustness of our method are tested with different harmonic orders and by changing the gas pressures as well as the distance between the gas exit and the optical axis. Moreover, we have also demonstrated the versatility of our method by applying it to CO₂ molecules.

Direct imaging of direction-controlled molecular rotational wave packets created by a polarization-skewed double-pulse

High-precision, time-resolved Coulomb explosion imaging of rotational wave packets in nitrogen molecules created with a pair of time-delayed, polarization-skewed femtosecond laser pulses is presented, providing insight into the creation process and dynamics of direction-controlled wave packets. To initiate unidirectional rotation, the interval of the double-pulse was set so that the second, polarization-tilted pulse hit the molecules at the time when molecules were aligned or antialigned along the polarization vector of the first pulse. During the revival period of the rotational wave packet, pulse intervals around both the full and half revival times were used. The observed molecular wave packet movies clearly show the signatures of quantum rotation, such as angular localization (alignment), dispersion, and revival phenomena, during the unidirectional motion. The patterns are quite different depending on the pulse interval even when the angular distribution at the second pulse irradiation is similar. The observed interval-dependence of the dynamics was analyzed on the basis of the real-time images, with the aid of numerical simulations, and the creation process of the packets was discussed. We show that the observed image patterns can be essentially rationalized in terms of rotational period and alignment parameter. Because the double-pulse scheme is the most fundamental in the creation of direction-controlled rotational wave packets, this study will lead to more sophisticated control and characterization of directional molecular motions.

Principle and Applications of the Coupling of Surface Plasmons and Excitons

Surface plasmons have been attracting increasing attention and have been studied extensively in recent decades because of their half-light and half-material polarized properties. On the one hand, the tightly confined surface plasmonic mode may reduce the size of integrated optical devices beyond the diffraction limit; on the other hand, it provides an approach toward enhancement of the interactions between light and matter. In recent experiments, researchers have realized promising applications for surface plasmons in quantum information processing, ultra-low-power lasers, and micro-nano processing devices by using plasmonic structures, which have demonstrated their superiority over traditional optics structures. In this paper, we introduce the theoretical principle of surface plasmons and review the research work related to the interactions between plasmons and excitons. Some perspectives with regard to the future development of plasmonic coupling are also outlined.

Control of the polarization direction of isolated attosecond pulses using inhomogeneous two-color fields

We theoretically demonstrate the control of the polarization direction of isolated attosecond pulses (IAPs) with inhomogeneous two-color fields synthesized by an 800-nm fundamental pulse and a 2000-nm control pulse having crossed linear polarizations. The results show that by using the temporally and spatially shaped field, the high-order harmonic generation (HHG) process can be efficiently controlled. An ultra-broad supercontinuum ranging from 150th to 400th harmonics which covers the water window region is generated. Such a supercontinuum supports the generation of a 64-as linearly polarized IAP, whose polarization direction is at about 45° with respect to the x axis. Moreover, we analyze the influence of the inhomogeneity parameters and the relative angle of the fundamental and control pulses on the IAP generation. It is shown that the polarization direction of the IAP can rotate in a wide range approximately from 8° to 90° relative to the x axis when the inhomogeneity parameters and the relative angle vary.

All-optical measurement of high-order fractional molecular echoes by high-order harmonic generation

An all-optical measurement of high-order fractional molecular echoes is demonstrated by using high-order harmonic generation (HHG). Excited by a pair of time-delayed short laser pulses, the signatures of full and high order fractional (1/2 and 1/3) alignment echoes are observed in the HHG signals measured from CO ₂ molecules at various time delays of the probe pulse. By increasing the time delay of the pump pulses, much higher order fractional (1/4) alignment echo is also observed in N ₂O molecules. With an analytic model based on the impulsive approximation, the spatiotemporal dynamics of the echo process are retrieved from the experiment. Compared to the typical molecular alignment revivals, high-order fractional molecular echoes are demonstrated to dephase more rapidly, which will open a new route towards the ultrashort-time measurement. The proposed HHG method paves an efficient way for accessing the high-order fractional echoes in molecules.

Identification of tunneling and multiphoton ionization in intermediate Keldysh parameter regime

Quantitative identification of tunneling ionization (TI) and multiphoton ionization (MPI) with Keldysh parameter γ in intermediate regime is of great importance to better understand various ionization-triggered strong-field phenomena. We theoretically demonstrate that the numerical observable ionization delay time is a more reliable indicator for characterizing the transition from TI to MPI under different laser parameters. Using non-linear iterative curve fitting algorithm (NICFA), the detected time-dependent probability current of ionized electrons can be decoupled into weighted TI and MPI portions. This enables us to confirm that the observed plateau-like structure in ionization delay time picture at the intermediate γ originates from the competition between TI and MPI processes. A hybrid quantum and classical approach (HQCA) is developed to evaluate the weights of TI and MPI electrons in good agreement with NICFA result. Moreover, the well separated TI and MPI electrons using HQCA are further propagated classically for mapping their final momentum, which well reproduces the experimental or ab-initio numerical calculated signatures of ionized electron momentum distribution in a rather broad γ regime.

Carrier-envelope phase-dependent molecular high-order harmonic generation from H2+ in a multi-cycle regime

Carrier-envelope phase (CEP) dependence of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) from H2+ in a multi-cycle laser pulse is investigated by solving the non-Born-Oppenheimer time-dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE). It is found that high harmonics in the plateau exhibit counterintuitive frequency modulation (FM) as the CEP of the multi-cycle laser varies. Based on the classical electron trajectories and time-frequency analysis, this multi-cycle CEP-dependent FM is demonstrated to result from the interference of half-cycle HHG radiations, which is modulated by laser-driven nuclear motion. The mechanism of the CEP-dependent FM is further confirmed by simulations based on a simple algorithm in the time domain, which satisfactorily reproduces the TDSE results. The CEP-dependent FM encodes rich information on the correlated electron and nuclear dynamics, which paves the way for probing nuclear motion with attosecond resolution.

Steering electron correlation time by elliptically polarized femtosecond laser pulses

Electron correlation is ubiquitous across diverse physical systems from atoms and molecules to condensed matter. Observing and controlling dynamical electron correlation in photoinduced processes paves the way to the coherent control of chemical reactionsand photobiological processes. Here, we experimentally investigate dynamics of electron correlation in double ionization of neon irradiated by intense elliptically polarized laser pulses. We find a characteristic, ellipticity-dependent, correlated electron emission along the minor axis of the elliptically polarized light. This observation is well reproduced by a semi-classical ensemble model simulation. By tracing back the corresponding electron trajectories, we find that the dynamical energy sharing during the electron emission process is modified by the ellipticity of the laser light. Thus, our work provides evidence for a possible ultrafast control of the energy sharing between the correlated electrons by varying the light ellipticity.
