Structure-Property Relationships via Recovery Rheology in Viscoelastic Materials

Unification of the Rheological Physics of Yield Stress Fluids

The physics above and below the yield stress is unified by a simple model for viscoplasticity that accounts for the nonlinear rheology of multiple yield stress fluids. The model has a rate-dependent relaxation time, allows for plastic deformation below the yield stress, and indicates that rapid elastic deformation aids yielding. A range of commonly observed rheological behaviors are predicted, including the smooth overshoot in the loss modulus and the recently discovered contributions from recoverable and unrecoverable strains in amplitude sweeps.

Fibrillar Network Dynamics during Oscillatory Rheology of Supramolecular Gels

Supramolecular gels are three-dimensional network structures formed by the hierarchical self-assembly of small molecules through weak noncovalent interactions. On the basis of the various interactions contributed by specific functional groups/moieties, gels with different architectures can be constructed that are smart to the external stimuli such as pH, type of solvent, stress, temperature, etc. In the present work, we explore the oscillatory shear response of supramolecular self-assembled systems formed by the low-molecular-weight (LMW) gelator based on difunctionalized amino acid, florenylmethoxycarbonyl (Fmoc)-lysine(Fmoc), Fm-K(Fm) in aqueous buffer solution, at two different pH (6 and 7.4). Small amplitude oscillatory shear (SAOS) reported weak frequency dependence of moduli indicating a gel-like network structure. Large amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS) indicated flow regimes dictated by yielding and subsequent network dynamics analogous to cagelike soft glassy events reported for colloidal systems. The three interval thixotropy test (3iTT) indicated recovery of moduli due to regelation contributed by the reversible interactions. A generalized network model framework is utilized to investigate the transient network characteristics of the Fm-K(Fm) gels. The "network creation" and "network loss" rates were chosen as exponential functions of scaled shear stress (= |τ12(t)G|) to effectively describe the complex response. On the basis of the insights, possible mechanisms to explain the differences/similarities in the response at different pH are speculated. It is further illustrated that the modeling strategy can be extended to supramolecular gels of different classes because of the commonality/universality of their response features under oscillatory shear.

Elucidating the G″ overshoot in soft materials with a yield transition via a time-resolved experimental strain decomposition

Materials that exhibit yielding behavior are used in many applications, from spreadable foods and cosmetics to direct write three-dimensional printing inks and filled rubbers. Their key design feature is the ability to transition behaviorally from solid to fluid under sufficient load or deformation. Despite its widespread applications, little is known about the dynamics of yielding in real processes, as the nonequilibrium nature of the transition impedes understanding. We demonstrate an iteratively punctuated rheological protocol that combines strain-controlled oscillatory shear with stress-controlled recovery tests. This technique provides an experimental decomposition of recoverable and unrecoverable strains, allowing for solid-like and fluid-like contributions to a yield stress material's behavior to be separated in a time-resolved manner. Using this protocol, we investigate the overshoot in loss modulus seen in materials that yield. We show that this phenomenon is caused by the transition from primarily solid-like, viscoelastic dissipation in the linear regime to primarily fluid-like, plastic flow at larger amplitudes. We compare and contrast this with a viscoelastic liquid with no yielding behavior, where the contribution to energy dissipation from viscous flow dominates over the entire range of amplitudes tested.

Capillary RheoSANS: measuring the rheology and nanostructure of complex fluids at high shear rates

Complex fluids containing micelles, proteins, polymers and inorganic nanoparticles are often processed and used in high shear environments that can lead to structural changes at the nanoscale. Here, capillary rheometry is combined with small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) to simultaneously measure the viscosity and nanostructure of model complex fluids at industrially-relevant high shear rates. Capillary RheoSANS (CRSANS) uses pressure-driven flow through a long, flexible, silica capillary to generate wall shear rates up to 10⁶ s^-1 and measure pressure drops up to 500 bar. Sample volumes as small as 2 mL are required, which allow for measurement of supply-limited biological and deuterated materials. The device design, rheology and scattering methodologies, and broad sample capabilities are demonstrated by measuring a variety of model systems including silica nanoparticles, NIST monoclonal antibodies, and surfactant worm-like micelles. For a shear-thinning suspension of worm-like micelles, CRSANS measurements are in good agreement with traditional RheoSANS measurements. Collectively, these techniques provide insight into relationships between nanostructure and steady-shear viscosity over eight orders of magnitude in shear rate. Overall, CRSANS expands the capabilities of traditional RheoSANS instruments toward higher shear rates, enabling in situ structural measurements of soft materials at shear rates relevant to extrusion, coating, lubrication, and spraying applications.

Correlation of the hierarchical structure with rheological behavior of polypseudorotaxane gel composed of pluronic and β-cyclodextrin

We have identified the hierarchical (primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary) structures of a polypseudorotaxane (PPR) gel composed of the Pluronic F108 and β-cyclodextrin system to be β-cyclodextrin crystalline, lamellar sheets, lamellar stacks and "grains", respectively. The correlation between the rheological properties and the proposed structures under shear flows was rationalized. Alignment of lamellar stacks and reorganization of grain boundaries under shear flows were investigated by rheo-SANS, small angle X-ray scattering and small-angle light scattering. The relaxation of highly aligned lamellar stacks is slow (>2 h) after flow cessation compared to that of the regrouped grains (a few minutes). The main contribution to thixotropic behavior is likely from the faster relaxation of the reorganized grains containing highly oriented lamellar stacks. The comprehensive understanding of structure-function relationship of the PPR gel will facilitate the rational design for its applications.

Tuning Material Properties of Nanoemulsion Gels by Sequentially Screening Electrostatic Repulsions and Then Thermally Inducing Droplet Bridging

Nanoemulsions are widely used in applications such as food products, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and enhanced oil recovery for which the ability to engineer material properties is desirable. Moreover, nanoemulsions are emergent model colloidal systems because of the ease in synthesizing monodisperse samples, flexibility in formulations, and tunable material properties. In this work, we study a nanoemulsion system previously developed by our group in which gelation occurs through thermally induced polymer bridging of droplets. We show here that the same system can undergo a sol-gel transition at room temperature through the addition of salt, which screens the electrostatic interaction and allows the system to assemble via depletion attraction. We systematically study how the addition of salt followed by a temperature jump can influence the resulting microstructures and rheological properties of the nanoemulsion system. We show that the salt-induced gel at room temperature can dramatically restructure when the temperature is suddenly increased and achieves a different gelled state. Our results offer a route to control the material properties of an attractive colloidal system by carefully tuning the interparticle potentials and sequentially triggering the colloidal self-assembly. The control and understanding of the material properties can be used for designing hierarchically structured hydrogels and complex colloid-based materials for advanced applications.

Unveiling Temporal Nonlinear Structure-Rheology Relationships under Dynamic Shearing

Understanding how microscopic rearrangements manifest in macroscopic flow responses is one of the central goals of nonlinear rheological studies. Using the sequence-of-physical-processes framework, we present a natural 3D structure–rheology space that temporally correlates the structural and nonlinear viscoelastic parameters. Exploiting the rheo-small-angle neutron scattering (rheo-SANS) techniques, we demonstrate the use of the framework with a model system of polymer-like micelles (PLMs), where we unveil a sequence of microscopic events that micelles experience under dynamic shearing across a range of frequencies. The least-aligned state of the PLMs is observed to migrate from the total strain extreme toward zero strain with increasing frequency. Our proposed 3D space is generic, and can be equally applied to other soft materials under any sort of deformation, such as startup shear or uniaxial extension. This work therefore provides a natural approach for researchers to study complex out-of-equilibrium structure–rheology relationships of soft materials.
