Unified Theoretical and Experimental View on Transient Shear Banding

Interplay between wall slip and shear banding in a thixotropic yield stress fluid

We study the local dynamics of a thixotropic yield stress fluid that shows a pronounced non-monotonic flow curve. This mechanically unstable behavior is generally not observable from standard rheometry tests, resulting in a stress plateau that stems from the coexistence of a flowing band with an unyielded region below a critical shear rate c. Combining ultrasound velocimetry with standard rheometry, we discover an original shear-banding scenario in the decreasing branch of the flow curve of model paraffin gels, in which the velocity profile of the flowing band is set by the applied shear rate  instead of c. As a consequence, the material slips at the walls with a velocity that shows a non-trivial dependence on the applied shear rate. To capture our observations, we propose a differential version of the so-called lever rule, describing the extent of the flowing band and the evolution of wall slip with shear rate. This phenomenological model holds down to very low shear rates, at which the dimension of the flowing band becomes comparable to the size of the individual wax particles that constitute the gel microstructure, leading to cooperative effects. Our approach provides a framework where constraints imposed in the classical shear-banding scenario can be relaxed, with wall slip acting as an additional degree of freedom.

Ductile-to-brittle transition and yielding in soft amorphous materials: perspectives and open questions

Soft amorphous materials are viscoelastic solids ubiquitously found around us, from clays and cementitious pastes to emulsions and physical gels encountered in food or biomedical engineering. Under an external deformation, these materials undergo a noteworthy transition from a solid to a liquid state that reshapes the material microstructure. This yielding transition was the main theme of a workshop held from January 9 to 13, 2023 at the Lorentz Center in Leiden. The manuscript presented here offers a critical perspective on the subject, synthesizing insights from the various brainstorming sessions and informal discussions that unfolded during this week of vibrant exchange of ideas. The result of these exchanges takes the form of a series of open questions that represent outstanding experimental, numerical, and theoretical challenges to be tackled in the near future.

Elucidating the role of physicochemical interactions on gel rheology

Soft materials are characterized by their intricate interplay of structure, dynamics, and rheological properties. This complexity makes it challenging to accurately predict their response to shear stress. Here, we investigate how the nature of bonds - electrostatic attractions, physical entanglements, physical repulsion, and covalent bonds - affects the linear and nonlinear rheology of gels. Specifically, we determine the critical roles these bonds play in the yield transition and thixotropic recovery of gel properties through a combination of linear oscillatory deformations, serial creep divergence measurements, and time-resolved flow sweeps. Different classes of gels are prepared with nearly identical linear rheology but significantly different yield transitions and nonlinear properties post-yielding. These differences are directly related to the kinetics by which the underlying elastic networks rebuild after flow. Gels which exhibit thixotropic hysteresis are able to fully recover their yield stress over time while non-thixotropic gels possess time-independent yielding metrics. This direct comparison between thixotropy and yielding reveals the intimate relationship between these phenomena and their controlling physical mechanisms within soft, amorphous materials.

Brittle and ductile yielding in soft materials

Many soft materials yield under mechanical loading, but how this transition from solid-like behavior to liquid-like behavior occurs can vary significantly. Understanding the physics of yielding is of great interest for the behavior of biological, environmental, and industrial materials, including those used as inks in additive manufacturing and muds and soils. For some materials, the yielding transition is gradual, while others yield abruptly. We refer to these behaviors as being ductile and brittle. The key rheological signatures of brittle yielding include a stress overshoot in steady-shear-startup tests and a steep increase in the loss modulus during oscillatory amplitude sweeps. In this work, we show how this spectrum of yielding behaviors may be accounted for in a continuum model for yield stress materials by introducing a parameter we call the brittility factor. Physically, an increased brittility decreases the contribution of recoverable deformation to plastic deformation, which impacts the rate at which yielding occurs. The model predictions are successfully compared to results of different rheological protocols from a number of real yield stress fluids with different microstructures, indicating the general applicability of the phenomenon of brittility. Our study shows that the brittility of soft materials plays a critical role in determining the rate of the yielding transition and provides a simple tool for understanding its effects under various loading conditions.

Slow Fatigue and Highly Delayed Yielding via Shear Banding in Oscillatory Shear

We study theoretically the dynamical process of yielding in cyclically sheared amorphous materials, within a thermal elastoplastic model and the soft glassy rheology model. Within both models we find an initially slow accumulation, over many cycles after the inception of shear, of low levels of damage in the form strain heterogeneity across the sample. This slow fatigue then suddenly gives way to catastrophic yielding and material failure. Strong strain localization in the form of shear banding is key to the failure mechanism. We characterize in detail the dependence of the number of cycles N^{*} before failure on the amplitude of imposed strain, the working temperature, and the degree to which the sample is annealed prior to shear. We discuss our finding with reference to existing experiments and particle simulations, and suggest new ones to test our predictions.

Predicting yielding in attractive colloidal gels

One of the defining characteristics of soft glassy materials is their ability to exhibit a yield stress, which can result in an overall elasto-visco-plastic mechanics. To design soft materials with specific properties, it is essential to gain a comprehensive understanding of the topological and structural failure points that occur during yielding. However, predicting these failure points, which lead to yielding, is challenging due to the dynamic nature of structure development and its cooccurrence with other complicated processes, such as local rearrangements and anisotropy. In this study, we employ a series of tools from network science to investigate colloidal gels as a model for soft glassy materials during yielding. Our findings reveal that edge betweenness centrality can be utilized as a universal predictor for yielding across various state variables, including the volume fraction of solids, the strength, and the range of attraction between colloids.

Scaling Description of Creep Flow in Amorphous Solids

Amorphous solids such as coffee foam, toothpaste, or mayonnaise display a transient creep flow when a stress Σ is suddenly imposed. The associated strain rate is commonly found to decay in time as γ[over ˙]∼t^{-ν}, followed either by arrest or by a sudden fluidization. Various empirical laws have been suggested for the creep exponent ν and fluidization time τ_{f} in experimental and numerical studies. Here, we postulate that plastic flow is governed by the difference between Σ and the transient yield stress Σ_{t}(γ) that characterizes the stability of configurations visited by the system at strain γ. Assuming the analyticity of Σ_{t}(γ) allows us to predict ν and asymptotic behaviors of τ_{f} in terms of properties of stationary flows. We test successfully our predictions using elastoplastic models and published experimental results.

Creep failure of amorphous solids under tensile stress

Applying constant tensile stress to a piece of amorphous solid results in a slow extension, followed by an eventual rapid mechanical collapse. This "creep" process is of paramount engineering concern, and as such was the subject of study in a variety of materials, for more than a century. Predictive theories for τ_{w}, the expected time of collapse, are incomplete, mainly due to its dependence on a bewildering variety of parameters, including temperature, system size, tensile force, but also the detailed microscopic interactions between constituents. The complex dependence of the collapse time on all the parameters is discussed below, using simulations of strip of amorphous material. Different scenarios are observed for ductile and brittle materials, resulting in serious difficulties in creating an all-encompassing theory that could offer safety measures for given conditions. A central aim of this paper is to employ scaling concepts, to achieve data collapse for the probability distribution function (pdf) of lnτ_{w}. The scaling ideas result in a universal function which provides a prediction of the pdf of lnτ_{w} for out-of-sample systems, from measurements at other values of these parameters. The predictive power of the scaling theory is demonstrated for both ductile and brittle systems. Finally, we present a derivation of universal scaling function for brittle materials. The ductile case appears to be due to a plastic necking instability and is left for future research.

Elastic criterion for shear-banding instability in amorphous solids

In amorphous solids, plastic flow is prone to localization into shear bands via an avalanche of shear-transformation (ST) rearrangements of constituent atoms or particles. However, such banding instability still remains a lack of direct experimental evidence. Using a real 3D colloidal glass under shear as proof of principle, we study STs' avalanches into shear banding that is controlled by strain rates. We demonstrate that, accompanying the emergent shear banding, the elastic response fields of the system, typical of a quadrupole for shear and a centrosymmetry for dilatation, lose the Eshelby-type spatial symmetry; instead, a strong correlation appears preferentially along the banding direction. By quantifying the fields' spatial decay, we identify an elastic criterion for the shear-banding instability, that is, the strongly correlated length of dilatation is smaller than the full length of shear correlation. Specifically, ST-induced free volume has to be confined within the elastic shear domain of ST so that those STs can self-organize to trigger shear banding. This physical picture is directly visualized by tracing the real-space evolution of local dilatation and ST particles. The present work unites the two classical mechanisms: free volume and STs, for the fundamental understanding of shear banding in amorphous solids.

Continuum modeling of shear startup in soft glassy materials

Yield stress fluids (YSFs) display a dual nature highlighted by the existence of a critical stress σ_{y} such that YSFs are solid for stresses σ imposed below σ_{y}, whereas they flow like liquids for σ>σ_{y}. Under an applied shear rate γ[over ̇], the solid-to-liquid transition is associated with a complex spatiotemporal scenario that depends on the microscopic details of the system, on the boundary conditions, and on the system size. Still, the general phenomenology reported in the literature boils down to a simple sequence that can be divided into a short-time response characterized by the so-called "stress overshoot," followed by stress relaxation towards a steady state. Such relaxation can be either (1) long-lasting, which usually involves the growth of a shear band that can be only transient or that may persist at steady state or (2) abrupt, in which case the solid-to-liquid transition resembles the failure of a brittle material, involving avalanches. In the present paper, we use a continuum model based on a spatially resolved fluidity approach to rationalize the complete scenario associated with the shear-induced yielding of YSFs. A key feature of our model is to provide a scaling for the coordinates of the stress overshoot, i.e., stress σ_{M} and strain γ_{M} as a function of γ[over ̇], which shows good agreement with experimental and numerical data extracted from the literature. Moreover, our approach shows that the power-law scaling σ_{M}(γ[over ̇]) is intimately linked to the growth dynamics of a fluidized boundary layer in the vicinity of the moving boundary. Yet such scaling is independent of the fate of that layer, and of the long-term behavior of the YSF, i.e., whether the steady-state flow profile is homogeneous or shear-banded. Finally, when including the presence of "long-range" correlations, we show that our model displays a ductile to brittle transition, i.e., the stress overshoot reduces into a sharp stress drop associated with avalanches, which impacts the scaling σ_{M}(γ[over ̇]). This generalized model nicely captures subtle avalanche-like features of the transient shear banding dynamics reported in experiments. Our work offers a unified picture of shear-induced yielding in YSFs, whose complex spatiotemporal dynamics are deeply connected to nonlocal effects.

Stress Overshoots in Simple Yield Stress Fluids

Soft glassy materials such as mayonnaise, wet clays, or dense microgels display a solid-to-liquid transition under external shear. Such a shear-induced transition is often associated with a nonmonotonic stress response in the form of a stress maximum referred to as "stress overshoot." This ubiquitous phenomenon is characterized by the coordinates of the maximum in terms of stress σ_{M} and strain γ_{M} that both increase as weak power laws of the applied shear rate. Here we rationalize such power-law scalings using a continuum model that predicts two different regimes in the limit of low and high applied shear rates. The corresponding exponents are directly linked to the steady-state rheology and are both associated with the nucleation and growth dynamics of a fluidized region. Our work offers a consistent framework for predicting the transient response of soft glassy materials upon startup of shear from the local flow behavior to the global rheological observables.

Emergence and persistence of flow inhomogeneities in the yielding and fluidization of dense soft solids

In three-dimensional computer simulations of model non-Brownian jammed suspensions, we compute the time required to reach homogeneous flow upon yielding, by analyzing stresses and particle packing at different shear rates, with and without confinement. We show that the stress overshoot and persistent shear banding preceding the complete fluidization are controlled by the presence of overconstrained microscopic domains in the initial solids. Such domains, identifiable with icosahedrally packed regions in the model used, allow for stress accumulation during the shear startup. Their structural reorganization under deformation controls the emergence and the persistence of the shear banding.
