Discovery of an Exceptionally Strong β-Decay Transition of ^{20}F and Implications for the Fate of Intermediate-Mass Stars

Shell Model Applications in Nuclear Astrophysics

In recent years, shell model studies have significantly contributed in improving the nuclear input, required in simulations of the dynamics of astrophysical objects and their associated nucleosynthesis. This review highlights a few examples such as electron capture rates and neutrino-nucleus cross sections, important for the evolution and nucleosynthesis of supernovae. For simulations of rapid neutron-capture (r-process) nucleosynthesis, shell model studies have contributed to an improved understanding of half lives of neutron-rich nuclei with magic neutron numbers and of the nuclear level densities and γ-strength functions that are both relevant for neutron capture rates.

r-Process Contributions to Low-Metallicity Stars

Various nucleosynthesis studies have pointed out that the rapid neutron capture r-process elements in very metal-poor (VMP) halo stars might have different origins. It has been known that an r-process can either be obtained in neutron-rich low Ye conditions or in high entropy environments [see e.g. 1–5], an overview over many investigations has appeared recently [6]. In the present article we analyze with statistical methods the observational abundance patterns from trans-Fe elements up to the actinides and come to the conclusion that four to five categories of astrophysical events must have contributed. These include the ejection of Fe and trans-Fe elements Sr, Y, Zr (continuing possibly beyond to slightly higher mass numbers) in category 0 events (hereafter "C0"), Fe and weak r-process contributions (including Eu in moderate to slightly larger but varying amounts) in CI and CII events, strong r-process abundance patterns with no or negligible (in comparison to solar) Fe production in CIIIa and CIIIb events, where category CIIIb shows a tendency for an actinide boost behavior. When comparing these categories with presently existing nucleosynthesis predictions, we suggest to identify them (despite remaining uncertainties) with regular core-collapse supernovae, quark deconfinement supernovae, magneto-rotational supernovae, neutron star mergers, and outflows from black hole accretion tori.

Electron capture in stars

Electron capture on nuclei plays an essential role in the dynamics of several astrophysical objects, including core-collapse and thermonuclear supernovae, the crust of accreting neutron stars in binary systems and the final core evolution of intermediate-mass stars. In these astrophysical objects, the capture occurs at finite temperatures and densities, at which the electrons form a degenerate relativistic electron gas. The capture rates can be derived from perturbation theory, where allowed nuclear transitions [Gamow-Teller (GT) transitions] dominate, except at the higher temperatures achieved in core-collapse supernovae, where forbidden transitions also contribute significantly to the capture rates. There has been decisive progress in recent years in measuring GT strength distributions using novel experimental techniques based on charge-exchange reactions. These measurements not only provide data for the GT distributions of ground states for many relevant nuclei, but also serve as valuable constraints for nuclear models which are needed to derive the capture rates for the many nuclei for which no data yet exist. In particular, models are needed to evaluate stellar capture rates at finite temperatures, where capture can also occur on nuclei in thermally excited states. There has also been significant progress in recent years in the modeling of stellar capture rates. This has been made possible by advances in nuclear many-body models as well as in computer soft- and hardware. Specifically, to derive reliable capture rates for core-collapse supernovae, a dedicated strategy has been developed based on a hierarchy of nuclear models specifically adapted to the abundant nuclei and astrophysical conditions present under various collapse conditions. In particular, for the challenging conditions where the electron chemical potential and the nuclearQvalues are of the same order, large-scale shell-model diagonalization calculations have proved to be an appropriate tool to derive stellar capture rates, often validated by experimental data. Such situations are relevant in the early stage of the core collapse of massive stars, for the nucleosynthesis of thermonuclear supernovae, and for the final evolution of the cores of intermediate-mass stars involving nuclei in the mass rangeA∼ 20-65. This manuscript reviews the experimental and theoretical progress recently achieved in deriving stellar electron capture rates. It also discusses the impact these improved rates have on our understanding of the various astrophysical objects.

Core-collapse supernova explosion theory

Most supernova explosions accompany the death of a massive star. These explosions give birth to neutron stars and black holes, and eject solar masses of heavy elements. However, determining the mechanism of explosion has been a half-century journey of great numerical and physical complexity. Here we present the status of this theoretical quest and the physics and astrophysics upon which its resolution seems to depend. The delayed neutrino-heating mechanism is emerging as the key driver of supernova explosions, but there remain many issues to address, such as the chaos of the involved dynamics.

The periodic table and the physics that drives it

Mendeleev's introduction of the periodic table of elements is one of the most important milestones in the history of chemistry, as it brought order into the known chemical and physical behaviour of the elements. The periodic table can be seen as parallel to the Standard Model in particle physics, in which the elementary particles known today can be ordered according to their intrinsic properties. The underlying fundamental theory to describe the interactions between particles comes from quantum theory or, more specifically, from quantum field theory and its inherent symmetries. In the periodic table, the elements are placed into a certain period and group based on electronic configurations that originate from the Pauli and Aufbau principles for the electrons surrounding a positively charged nucleus. This order enables us to approximately predict the chemical and physical properties of elements. Apparent anomalies can arise from relativistic effects, partial-screening phenomena (of type lanthanide contraction) and the compact size of the first shell of every l-value. Further, ambiguities in electron configurations and the breakdown of assigning a dominant configuration, owing to configuration mixing and dense spectra for the heaviest elements in the periodic table. For the short-lived transactinides, the nuclear stability becomes an important factor in chemical studies. Nuclear stability, decay rates, spectra and reaction cross sections are also important for predicting the astrophysical origin of the elements, including the production of the heavy elements beyond iron in supernova explosions or neutron-star mergers. In this Perspective, we critically analyse the periodic table of elements and the current status of theoretical predictions and origins for the heaviest elements, which combine both quantum chemistry and physics.
