Visualizing Anisotropic Oxygen Diffusion in Ceria under Activated Conditions

Modularization of Regional Electronic Structure over Defect-Rich CeO2 Rods for Enhancing Photogenerated Charge Transfer and CO2 Activation

Oxygen vacancy (OV) engineering has been widely applied in different types of metal oxide-based photocatalytic reactions. Our study has shown that the redistributed OVs resulting from voids in CeO2 rods lead to significant differences in the band structure in space. The flat energy band within the highly crystallized bulk region hinders the recombination of photogenerated carrier pairs during the transfer process. The downward curved energy band in the surface region enhances the activation of the absorbents. Therefore, the localization of the band structure through crystal structure regionalization renders V-CeO2 capable of achieving efficient utilization of photogenerated carriers. Practically, the V-CeO2 rod shows a remarkable turnover number of 190.58 μmol g-1 h-1 in CO2 photoreduction, which is ∼9.4 times higher than that of D-CeO2 (20.46 μmol g-1 h-1). The designed modularization structure in our work is expected to provide important inspiration and guidance in coordinating the kinetic behavior of carriers in OV defect-rich photocatalysts.

Tracking cubic ice at molecular resolution

Ice is present everywhere on Earth and has an essential role in several areas, such as cloud physics, climate change and cryopreservation. The role of ice is determined by its formation behaviour and associated structure. However, these are not fully understood1. In particular, there is a long-standing debate about whether water can freeze to form cubic ice-a currently undescribed phase in the phase space of ordinary hexagonal ice2-6. The mainstream view inferred from a collection of laboratory data attributes this divergence to the inability to discern cubic ice from stacking-disordered ice-a mixture of cubic and hexagonal sequences7-11. Using cryogenic transmission electron microscopy combined with low-dose imaging, we show here the preferential nucleation of cubic ice at low-temperature interfaces, resulting in two types of separate crystallization of cubic ice and hexagonal ice from water vapour deposition at 102 K. Moreover, we identify a series of cubic-ice defects, including two types of stacking disorder, revealing the structure evolution dynamics supported by molecular dynamics simulations. The realization of direct, real-space imaging of ice formation and its dynamic behaviour at the molecular level provides an opportunity for ice research at the molecular level using transmission electron microscopy, which may be extended to other hydrogen-bonding crystals.

Strong metal-support interactions induced by an ultrafast laser

Supported metal catalysts play a crucial role in the modern industry. Constructing strong metal-support interactions (SMSI) is an effective means of regulating the interfacial properties of noble metal-based supported catalysts. Here, we propose a new strategy of ultrafast laser-induced SMSI that can be constructed on a CeO2-supported Pt system by confining electric field in localized interface. The nanoconfined field essentially boosts the formation of surface defects and metastable CeOx migration. The SMSI is evidenced by covering Pt nanoparticles with the CeOx thin overlayer and suppression of CO adsorption. The overlayer is permeable to the reactant molecules. Owing to the SMSI, the resulting Pt/CeO2 catalyst exhibits enhanced activity and stability for CO oxidation. This strategy of constructing SMSI can be extended not only to other noble metal systems (such as Au/TiO2, Pd/TiO2, and Pt/TiO2) but also on non-reducible oxide supports (such as Pt/Al2O3, Au/MgO, and Pt/SiO2), providing a universal way to engineer and develop high-performance supported noble metal catalysts.

Toward an Atomic-Level Understanding of Ceria-Based Catalysts: When Experiment and Theory Go Hand in Hand

ConspectusBecause ceria (CeO₂) is a key ingredient in the formulation of many catalysts, its catalytic roles have received a great amount of attention from experiment and theory. Its primary function is to enhance the oxidation activity of catalysts, which is largely governed by the low activation barrier for creating lattice O vacancies. Such an important characteristic of ceria has been exploited in CO oxidation, methane partial oxidation, volatile organic compound oxidation, and the water-gas shift (WGS) reaction and in the context of automotive applications. A great challenge of such heterogeneously catalyzed processes remains the unambiguous identification of active sites.In oxidation reactions, closing the catalytic cycle requires ceria reoxidation by gas-phase oxygen, which includes oxygen adsorption and activation. While the general mechanistic framework of such processes is accepted, only very recently has an atomic-level understanding of oxygen activation on ceria powders been achieved by combined experimental and theoretical studies using in situ multiwavelength Raman spectroscopy and DFT.Recent studies have revealed that the adsorption and activation of gas-phase oxygen on ceria is strongly facet-dependent and involves different superoxide/peroxide species, which can now be unambiguously assigned to ceria surface sites using the combined Raman and DFT approach. Our results demonstrate that, as a result of oxygen dissociation, vacant ceria lattice sites are healed, highlighting the close relationship of surface processes with lattice oxygen dynamics, which is also of technical relevance in the context of oxygen storage-release applications.A recent DFT interpretation of Raman spectra of polycrystalline ceria enables us to take account of all (sub)surface and bulk vibrational features observed in the experimental spectra and has revealed new findings of great relevance for a mechanistic understanding of ceria-based catalysts. These include the identification of surface oxygen (Ce-O) modes and the quantification of subsurface oxygen defects. Combining these theoretical insights with operando Raman experiments now allows the (sub)surface oxygen dynamics of ceria and noble metal/ceria catalysts to be monitored under the reaction conditions.Applying these findings to Au/ceria catalysts provides univocal evidence for ceria support participation in heterogeneous catalysis. For room-temperature CO oxidation, operando Raman monitoring the (sub)surface defect dynamics clearly demonstrates the dependence of catalytic activity on the ceria reduction state. Extending the combined experimental/DFT approach to operando IR spectroscopy allows the elucidation of the nature of the active gold as (pseudo)single Au⁺ sites and enables us to develop a detailed mechanistic picture of the catalytic cycle. Temperature-dependent studies highlight the importance of facet-dependent defect formation energies and adsorbate stabilities (e.g., carbonates). While the latter aspects are also evidenced to play a role in the WGS reaction, the facet-dependent catalytic performance shows a correlation with the extent of gold agglomeration. Our findings are fully consistent with a redox mechanism, thus adding a new perspective to the ongoing discussion of the WGS reaction.As outlined above for ceria-based catalysts, closely combining state-of-the-art in situ/operando spectroscopy and theory constitutes a powerful approach to rational catalyst design by providing essential mechanistic information based on an atomic-level understanding of reactions.

Room-temperature oxygen vacancy migration induced reversible phase transformation during the anelastic deformation in CuO

From the mechanical perspectives, the influence of point defects is generally considered at high temperature, especially when the creep deformation dominates. Here, we show the stress-induced reversible oxygen vacancy migration in CuO nanowires at room temperature, causing the unanticipated anelastic deformation. The anelastic strain is associated with the nucleation of oxygen-deficient CuO_x phase, which gradually transforms back to CuO after stress releasing, leading to the gradual recovery of the nanowire shape. Detailed analysis reveals an oxygen deficient metastable CuO_x phase that has been overlooked in the literatures. Both theoretical and experimental investigations faithfully predict the oxygen vacancy diffusion pathways in CuO. Our finding facilitates a better understanding of the complicated mechanical behaviors in materials, which could also be relevant across multiple scientific disciplines, such as high-temperature superconductivity and solid-state chemistry in Cu-O compounds, etc.

The effect of point defects on mechanical behaviour of materials is generally considered at high temperatures. This work reports a reversible stress-induced migration of point defects during anelastic deformation in CuO nanowires at room temperature resulting from heterogeneous strain distribution.

Direct Observation of Li Migration into V5S8: Order to Antisite Disorder Intercalation Followed by the Topotactic-Based Conversion Reaction

Two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides hold great potential in rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. Their electrochemical properties are closely related to the structural evolutions during lithium-ion migration. Understanding these migration/reaction mechanisms is important to help improve battery performance. Herein, we report the real-time and atomic-scale observation of phase transitions during the lithiation and delithiation for V₅S₈ via in situ electron diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy techniques. We find that the phase transformation proceeds via a sequence of order to antisite disorder intercalation and topotactic-based conversion reaction. During the intercalation reaction, the lithium ion destroys the orderings of the interstitial V with the formation of Li/V antisite. Such a reaction is found to be reversible, i.e., the extraction of lithium from Li_xV₅S₈ leads to the recovery of V orderings. The conversion reaction involves heterogeneous nucleation of Li₂S with 3-20 nm nanodomains, which maintain the crystallographic integrity with Li_xV₅S₈. These findings elucidate the complex interactions between the lithium ion and host V₅S₈ during ionic migration in solids, which should be helpful in understanding the relationship between phase transformation kinetics and battery performance.
