Optical Transistor for Amplification of Radiation in a Broadband Terahertz Domain

Kerr nonlinearity assisted magnetically induced transparency in cavity magnon polaritons

We investigate optical transmission in cavity magnon polaritons and discover a complex multi-window magnetically induced transparency and a bistability with magnetic and optical characteristics. With the regulation of Kerr nonlinear effects and driven fields, a complex multi-window resonant transmission with fast and slow light effects appears, which includes transparency and absorption windows. The magnetically induced transparency and absorption can be explained by the destructive and constructive interference between different excitation pathways. Moreover, we demonstrate the bistability of magnons and photons with a hysteresis loop, where magnetic and optical bistabilities can induce and control each other. Our results pave a new way, to the best of our knowledge, for implementing a room-temperature multiband quantum memory.

Sensing nitriles with THz spectroscopy of urine vapours from cancers patients subject to chemotherapy

A THz nonstationary high-resolution spectrometer based on semiconductor superlattice multipliers is applied to investigate the dynamics of urine composition for cancer patients treated with chemotherapy. The molecular urine composition of healthy volunteers and cancer patients was compared and contrasted. We have found a set of nitriles that either appeared after chemotherapy or increased in content, which are expected as a result of bio-chemical damage to the liver. While no damage can be detected at this stage by existing clinical methods, the identified nitriles are candidates for further large-scale systematic testing towards markers for nephrotoxicity of chemotherapy at an early stage of the treatment, when conventional diagnostics cannot identify substantial organ damage. Comparing the metabolite concentration dynamics with side effects during chemotherapy might then help individuate patients prone to severe complications and correct the treatment. Our devices are game-changers for THz spectroscopy of liquids: they allow spanning four different frequency ranges for a general evaluation of most substances found in the liquid and selecting a spectral interval that bypasses the strong absorption lines from substances such as water and ammonia, which may otherwise mask the detection of the target metabolites.

Harmonic Generation in Biased Semiconductor Superlattices

Semiconductor superlattices are proven nanomaterials for THz nonlinear optics by means of high order harmonic generation. Seminal approaches leading to a perfectly antisymmetric current-voltage (I-V.) curve predict the generation of odd harmonics only in the absence of a bias. However, even harmonics at high orders have been detected in several experiments. Their generation has been explained by considering deviations from the current flow symmetry that break the exact antisymmetry of the I-V. curve. In this paper, we focus on another issue found experimentally that has also not been explained, namely the harmonic power output asymmetry from negative to positive applied bias. Once more, breaking the I-V. flow symmetry explains the experiments and leads to a further tool to design the power output of these materials. Furthermore, a new approach for the Boltzmann Equation under relaxation-rate approximation eliminates numerical difficulties generated by a previous theory. This leads to very efficient analytical expressions that can be used for both fundamental physics/optics/material sciences and realistic device development and simulations.

Perfect Impedance Matching with Meta-Surfaces Made of Ultra-Thin Metal Films: A Phenomenological Approach to the Ideal THz Sensors

The terahertz (THz) frequency range is incredibly important as it covers electromagnetic emissions typical for biological and molecular processes. All molecules emit THz waves in a unique fingerprint pattern, although the intensity of such signals is usually too weak to be detected. To address the efficiency gap in existing THz devices it is extremely important to create surfaces with perfect anti-reflection properties. Although metals are absolutely reflective, here we show both theoretically and experimentally that by constructing meta-surfaces made of a superposition of ultra-thin metallic nano-films (a couple of nanometres thick) and oxide layers a unique property of perfect transmission and impedance matching may be realised. The perfect transmission rates can be as high as 100% and it may be achieved in both optical and THz regimes. The predicted effect has been observed for numerous meta-surfaces of different compositions. The effect found here is expected to impact the renewable energies sectors, optoelectronic and telecommunication industries, accelerating the arrival of the sensors for the new 6G-technology. The phenomenon is highly relevant to all scientific fields where minimising electromagnetic losses through reflection is important.

Giant controllable gigahertz to terahertz nonlinearities in superlattices

Optical nonlinearities are of perpetual importance, notably connected with emerging new materials. However, they are difficult to exploit in the gigahertz–terahertz (GHz–THz) range at room temperature and using low excitation power. Here, we present a clear-cut theoretical and experimental demonstration of real time, low power, room temperature control of GHz–THz nonlinearities. The nonlinear susceptibility concept, successful in most materials, cannot be used here and we show in contrast, a complex interplay between applied powers, voltages and asymmetric current flow, delivering giant control and enhancement of the nonlinearities. Semiconductor superlattices are used as nonlinear sources and as mixers for heterodyne detection, unlocking their dual potential as compact, room temperature, controllable sources and detectors. The low input powers and voltages applied are within the range of compact devices, enabling the practical extension of nonlinear optics concepts to the GHz–THz range, under controlled conditions and following a predictive design tool.

Proposal for Plasmon Spectroscopy of Fluctuations in Low-Dimensional Superconductors

We propose to employ an optical spectroscopy technique to monitor the superconductivity and properties of superconductors in the fluctuating regime. This technique is operational close to the plasmon resonance frequency of the material, and it intimately connects with the superconducting fluctuations slightly above the critical temperature T_{c}. We find the Aslamazov-Larkin corrections to ac linear and dc nonlinear electric currents in a generic two-dimensional superconductor exposed to an external longitudinal electromagnetic field. First, we study the plasmon resonance of normal electrons near T_{c}, taking into account their interaction with superconducting fluctuations, and show that fluctuating Cooper pairs reveal a redshift of the plasmon dispersion and an additional mechanism of plasmon scattering, which surpasses both the electron-impurity and the Landau dampings. Second, we demonstrate the emergence of a drag effect of superconducting fluctuations by the external field resulting in considerable, experimentally measurable corrections to the electric current in the vicinity of the plasmon resonance.
