Direct Observation of Full-Gap Superconductivity and Pseudogap in Two-Dimensional Fullerides

Quantum spin driven Yu-Shiba-Rusinov multiplets and fermion-parity-preserving phase transition in K3C60

Magnetic impurities in superconductors are of increasing interest due to emergent Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states and Majorana zero modes for fault-tolerant quantum computation. However, a direct relationship between the YSR multiple states and magnetic anisotropy splitting of quantum impurity spins remains poorly characterized. By using scanning tunneling microscopy, we systematically resolve individual transition-metal (Fe, Cr, and Ni) impurities induced YSR multiplets as well as their Zeeman effects in the K3C60 superconductor. The YSR multiplets show identical d orbital-like wave functions that are symmetry-mismatched to the threefold K3C60(1 1 1) host surface, breaking point-group symmetries of the spatial distribution of YSR bound states in real space. Remarkably, we identify an unprecedented fermion-parity-preserving quantum phase transition between ground states with opposite signs of the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy that can be manipulated by an external magnetic field. These findings can be readily understood in terms of anisotropy splitting of quantum impurity spins, and thus elucidate the intricate interplay between the magnetic anisotropy and YSR multiplets.

Ultrabroadband High Photoresponsivity at Room Temperature Based on Quasi-1D Pseudogap System (TaSe4 )2 I

Narrow bandgap materials have garnered significant attention within the field of broadband photodetection. However, the performance is impeded by diminished absorption near the bandgap, resulting in a rapid decline in photoresponsivity within the mid-wave infrared (MWIR) and long-wave infrared (LWIR) regions. Furthermore, they mostly worked in cryogenic temperature. Here, without the assistance of any complex structure and special environment, it is realized high responsivity covering ultra-broadband wavelength range (Ultraviolet (UV) to LWIR) in a single quasi-1D pseudogap (PG) system (TaSe4 )2 I nanoribbon, especially high responsivity (From 23.9 to 8.31 A W-1 ) within MWIR and LWIR region at room temperature (RT). Through direct probing the carrier relaxation process with broadband time-resolved transient absorption spectrum measurement, the underlying mechanism of majorly photoconductive effect is revealed, which causes an increased spectral weight extended to PG region. This work paves the way for realizing high-performance uncooled MWIR and LWIR detection by using quasi-1D PG materials.

Evidence for Band Renormalizations in Strong-Coupling Superconducting Alkali-Fulleride Films

There has been a long-standing debate about the mechanism of the unusual superconductivity in alkali-intercalated fullerides. In this Letter, using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we systematically investigate the electronic structures of superconducting K_{3}C_{60} thin films. We observe a dispersive energy band crossing the Fermi level with the occupied bandwidth of about 130 meV. The measured band structure shows prominent quasiparticle kinks and a replica band involving the Jahn-Teller active phonon modes, which reflects strong electron-phonon coupling in the system. The electron-phonon coupling constant is estimated to be about 1.2, which dominates the quasiparticle mass renormalization. Moreover, we observe an isotropic nodeless superconducting gap beyond the mean-field estimation (2Δ/k_{B}T_{c}≈5). Both the large electron-phonon coupling constant and large reduced superconducting gap suggest a strong-coupling superconductivity in K_{3}C_{60}, while the electronic correlation effect is suggested by the observation of a waterfall-like band dispersion and the small bandwidth compared with the effective Coulomb interaction. Our results not only directly visualize the crucial band structure but also provide important insights into the mechanism of the unusual superconductivity of fulleride compounds.

Doping Asymmetry and Layer-Selective Metal-Insulator Transition in Trilayer K_{3+x}C_{60}

Thin films provide a versatile platform to tune electron correlations and explore new physics in strongly correlated materials. Epitaxially grown thin films of the alkali-doped fulleride K_{3+x}C_{60}, for example, exhibit intriguing phenomena, including Mott transitions and superconductivity, depending on dimensionality and doping. Surprisingly, in the trilayer case, a strong electron-hole doping asymmetry has been observed in the superconducting phase, which is absent in the three-dimensional bulk limit. Using density-functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory, we show that this doping asymmetry results from a substantial charge reshuffling from the top layer to the middle layer. While the nominal filling per fullerene is close to n=3, the top layer rapidly switches to an n=2 insulating state upon hole doping, which implies a doping asymmetry of the superconducting gap. The interlayer charge transfer and layer-selective metal-insulator transition result from the interplay between crystal field splittings, strong Coulomb interactions, and an effectively negative Hund coupling. This peculiar charge reshuffling is absent in the monolayer system, which is an n=3 Mott insulator, as expected from the nominal filling.

Direct observation of nodeless superconductivity and phonon modes in electron-doped copper oxide Sr1-xNdxCuO2

The microscopic understanding of high-temperature superconductivity in cuprates has been hindered by the apparent complexity of crystal structures in these materials. We used scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy to study the electron-doped copper oxide compound Sr_1−xNd_xCuO₂, which has only bare cations separating the CuO₂ planes and thus the simplest infinite-layer structure of all cuprate superconductors. Tunneling conductance spectra of the major CuO₂ planes in the superconducting state revealed direct evidence for a nodeless pairing gap, regardless of variation of its magnitude with the local doping of trivalent neodymium. Furthermore, three distinct bosonic modes are observed as multiple peak-dip-hump features outside the superconducting gaps and their respective energies depend little on the spatially varying gaps. As well as the bosonic modes, with energies identical to those of the external, bending and stretching phonons of copper oxides, our findings reveal the origin of the bosonic modes in lattice vibrations rather than spin excitations.

Dual Orbital Degeneracy Lifting in a Strongly Correlated Electron System

The local structure of NaTiSi_{2}O_{6} is examined across its Ti-dimerization orbital-assisted Peierls transition at 210 K. An atomic pair distribution function approach evidences local symmetry breaking preexisting far above the transition. The analysis unravels that, on warming, the dimers evolve into a short range orbital degeneracy lifted (ODL) state of dual orbital character, persisting up to at least 490 K. The ODL state is correlated over the length scale spanning ∼6 sites of the Ti zigzag chains. Results imply that the ODL phenomenology extends to strongly correlated electron systems.

Structural and electronic properties of C60 fullerene network self-assembled on metal-covered semiconductor surfaces

Using first-principles density functional theory calculations, we made an accurate structural characterization of the C₆₀ superstructures self-assembled on the Tl-adsorbed Si(111) and Ge(111) surfaces, which finds a good agreement with the recent scanning tunneling microscopy observations. Our band structure calculations revealed the semi-metallic character of the C₆₀/Tl/Si(111) system, while the C₆₀/Tl/Ge(111) system was found to show up the pronounced metallic character due to the cascade of the flat bands lying in the vicinity of the Fermi level. The latter is a fingerprint for strong correlation effects in the C₆₀/Tl/Ge(111) system, which makes it a promising object for studying electrical transport phenomena and opens the prospects for its application in the molecular-based electronic devices. We elucidated the details of the molecule-substrate and intermolecular interactions and discussed the character of a charge transfer in both systems.
