Glassy Behavior of Sticky Spheres: What Lies beyond Experimental Timescales?

Brownian dynamics simulations of hard rods in external fields and with contact interactions

We propose a simulation method for Brownian dynamics of hard rods in one dimension for arbitrary continuous external force fields. It is an event-driven procedure based on the fragmentation and mergers of clusters formed by particles in contact. It allows one to treat particle interactions in addition to the hard-sphere exclusion as long as the corresponding interaction forces are continuous functions of the particle coordinates. We furthermore develop a treatment of sticky hard spheres as described by Baxter's contact interaction potential.

Glassy dynamics of sticky hard spheres beyond the mode-coupling regime

Sticky hard spheres, i.e., hard particles decorated with a short-ranged attractive interaction potential, constitute a relatively simple model with highly non-trivial glassy dynamics. The mode-coupling theory of the glass transition (MCT) offers a qualitative account of the complex reentrant dynamics of sticky hard spheres, but the predicted glass transition point is notoriously underestimated. Here we apply an improved first-principles-based theory, referred to as generalized mode-coupling theory (GMCT), to sticky hard spheres. This theoretical framework seeks to go beyond MCT by hierarchically expanding the dynamics in higher-order density correlation functions. We predict the phase diagrams from the first few levels of the GMCT hierarchy and the dynamics-related critical exponents, all of which are much closer to the empirical observations than MCT. Notably, the prominent reentrant glassy dynamics, the glass-glass transition, and the higher-order bifurcation singularity classes (A₃ and A₄) of sticky hard spheres are found to be preserved within GMCT at arbitrary order. Moreover, we demonstrate that when the hierarchical order of GMCT increases, the effect of the short-ranged attractive interactions becomes more evident in the dynamics. This implies that GMCT is more sensitive to subtle microstructural differences than MCT, and that the framework provides a promising first-principles approach to systematically go beyond the MCT regime.

Does mesoscopic elasticity control viscous slowing down in glassforming liquids?

The dramatic slowing down of relaxation dynamics of liquids approaching the glass transition remains a highly debated problem, where the crux of the puzzle resides in the elusive increase in the activation barrier ΔE(T) with decreasing temperature T. A class of theoretical frameworks-known as elastic models-attribute this temperature dependence to the variations of the liquid's macroscopic elasticity, quantified by the high-frequency shear modulus G_∞(T). While elastic models find some support in a number of experimental studies, these models do not take into account the spatial structures, length scales, and heterogeneity associated with structural relaxation in supercooled liquids. Here, we propose and test the possibility that viscous slowing down is controlled by a mesoscopic elastic stiffness κ(T), defined as the characteristic stiffness of response fields to local dipole forces in the liquid's underlying inherent structures. First, we show that κ(T)-which is intimately related to the energy and length scales characterizing quasilocalized, nonphononic excitations in glasses-increases more strongly with decreasing T than the macroscopic inherent structure shear modulus G(T) [the glass counterpart of liquids' G_∞(T)] in several computer liquids. Second, we show that the simple relation ΔE(T) ∝ κ(T) holds remarkably well for some computer liquids, suggesting a direct connection between the liquid's underlying mesoscopic elasticity and enthalpic energy barriers. On the other hand, we show that for other computer liquids, the above relation fails. Finally, we provide strong evidence that what distinguishes computer liquids in which the ΔE(T) ∝ κ(T) relation holds from those in which it does not is that the latter feature highly fragmented/granular potential energy landscapes, where many sub-basins separated by low activation barriers exist. Under such conditions, it appears that the sub-basins do not properly represent the landscape properties relevant for structural relaxation.
