Tungsten Hexanitride with Single-Bonded Armchairlike Hexazine Structure at High Pressure

All-Single Bonds Fused N18 Macro-Rings and N8 Cagelike Building Blocks Stabilized in Lanthanum Supernitrides

Single-bonded polymeric nitrogen has gained tremendous research interest because of its unique physical properties and great potential applications. Despite much progress in theoretical predictions, it is still challenging to experimentally synthesize polynitrogen compounds with novel all-single-bonded units. Herein, we have synthesized two brand-new lanthanum supernitrides LaN8, through a direct reaction between La and N2 in laser-heated diamond anvil cells at megabar pressures. Our experiments and calculations revealed that two LaN8 phases had the R-3 and P4/n symmetry characterized by a unique 2D network with N18 macro-rings and cagelike N8 building blocks, respectively. Differing from known polynitrogen structures, these two polymers were composed of single-bonded nitrogen atoms belonging to sp3 and sp2 hybridizations. In particular, P4/n LaN8 possessed the longest N-N bond length among all of the experimentally reported metal nitrides, potentially being a high-energy-density material. The present study opens a fresh, promising avenue for the rational design and discovery of new supernitrides with unique nitrogen structures via the high-pressure treatment.

Mechanism of Pressure-Modulated Self-Trapped Exciton Emission in Cs2TeCl6 Double Perovskite

Pressure-modulated self-trapped exciton (STE) emission mechanism in all-inorganic lead-free metal halide double perovskites characterized by large Stokes-shifted broadband emission, has attracted much attention across various fields such as optics, optoelectronics, and biomedical sciences. Here, by employing the all-inorganic lead-free metal halide double perovskite Cs2TeCl6 as a paradigm, the authors elucidate that the performance of STE emission can be modulated by pressure, attributable to the pressure-induced evolution of the electronic state (ES). Two ES transitions happen at pressures of 1.6 and 5.8 GPa, sequentially. The electronic behaviors of Cs2TeCl6 can be jointly modulated by both pressure and ES transitions. When the pressure reaches 1.6 GPa, the Huang-Rhys factor S, indicative of the strength of electron-phonon coupling, attains an optimum value of ≈12.0, correlating with the pressure-induced photoluminescence (PL) intensity of Cs2TeCl6 is 4.8-fold that of its PL intensity under ambient pressure. Through analyzing the pressure-dependent STE dynamic behavioral changes, the authors have revealed the microphysical mechanism underlying the pressure-modulated enhancement and quenching of STE emission in Cs2TeCl6.

Synthesis of LaCN3, TbCN3, CeCN5, and TbCN5 Polycarbonitrides at Megabar Pressures

Inorganic ternary metal-C-N compounds with covalently bonded C-N anions encompass important classes of solids such as cyanides and carbodiimides, well known at ambient conditions and composed of [CN]- and [CN2]2- anions, as well as the high-pressure formed guanidinates featuring [CN3]5- anion. At still higher pressures, carbon is expected to be 4-fold coordinated by nitrogen atoms, but hitherto, such CN4-built anions are missing. In this study, four polycarbonitride compounds (LaCN3, TbCN3, CeCN5, and TbCN5) are synthesized in laser-heated diamond anvil cells at pressures between 90 and 111 GPa. Synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) reveals that their crystal structures are built of a previously unobserved anionic single-bonded carbon-nitrogen three-dimensional (3D) framework consisting of CN4 tetrahedra connected via di- or oligo-nitrogen linkers. A crystal-chemical analysis demonstrates that these polycarbonitride compounds have similarities to lanthanide silicon phosphides. Decompression experiments reveal the existence of LaCN3 and CeCN5 compounds over a very large pressure range. Density functional theory (DFT) supports these discoveries and provides further insight into the stability and physical properties of the synthesized compounds.

One-Dimensional Non-coplanar Nitrogen Chains in Manganese Tetranitride under High Pressure

Transition metal nitrides have great potential applications as incompressible and high energy density materials. Various polymeric nitrogen structures significantly affect their properties, contributing to their complex bonding modes and coordination conditions. Herein, we first report a new manganese polynitride MnN4 with bifacial trans-cis [N4]n chains by treating with high-pressure and high-temperature conditions in a diamond anvil cell. Our experiments reveal that MnN4 has a P-1 symmetry and could stabilize in the pressure range of 56-127 GPa. Detailed pressure-volume data and calculations of this phase indicate that MnN4 is a potential hard (255 GPa) and high energy density (2.97 kJ/g) material. The asymmetric interactions impel N1 and N4 atoms to hybridize to sp2-3, which causes distortions of [N4]n chains. This work discovers a new polynitride material, fills the gap for the study of manganese polynitride under high pressure, and offers some new insights into the formation of polymeric nitrogen structures.

Ultrafast Dynamics Across Pressure-Induced Electronic State Transitions, Fluorescence Quenching, and Bandgap Evolution in CsPbBr3 Quantum Dots

This work investigates the impact of pressure on the structural, optical properties, and electronic structure of CsPbBr3 quantum dots (QDs) using steady-state photoluminescence, steady-state absorption, and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy, reaching a maximum pressure of 3.38 GPa. The experimental results indicate that CsPbBr3 QDs undergo electronic state (ES) transitions from ES-I to ES-II and ES-II to ES-III at 0.38 and 1.08 GPa, respectively. Intriguingly, a mixed state of ES-II and ES-III is observed within the pressure range of 1.08-1.68 GPa. The pressure-induced fluorescence quenching in ES-II is attributed to enhanced defect trapping and reduced radiative recombination. Above 1.68 GPa, fluorescence vanishes entirely, attributed to the complete phase transformation from ES-II to ES-III in which radiative recombination becomes non-existent. Notably, owing to stronger quantum confinement effects, CsPbBr3 QDs exhibit an impressive bandgap tuning range of 0.497 eV from 0 to 2.08 GPa, outperforming nanocrystals by 1.4 times and bulk counterparts by 11.3 times. Furthermore, this work analyzes various carrier dynamics processes in the pressure-induced bandgap evolution and electron state transitions, and systematically studies the microphysical mechanisms of optical properties in CsPbBr3 QDs under pressure, offering insights for optimizing optical properties and designing novel materials.

High-pressure Synthesis of Cobalt Polynitrides: Unveiling Intriguing Crystal Structures and Nitridation Behavior

In this study, we conduct extensive high-pressure experiments to investigate phase stability in the cobalt-nitrogen system. Through a combination of synthesis in a laser-heated diamond anvil cell, first-principles calculations, Raman spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, we establish the stability fields of known high-pressure phases, hexagonal NiAs-type CoN, and marcasite-type CoN2 within the pressure range of 50-90 GPa. We synthesize and characterize previously unknown nitrides, Co3N2, Pnma-CoN and two polynitrides, CoN3 and CoN5, within the pressure range of 90-120 GPa. Both polynitrides exhibit novel types of polymeric nitrogen chains and networks. CoN3 feature branched-type nitrogen trimers (N3) and CoN5 show π-bonded nitrogen chain. As the nitrogen content in the cobalt nitride increases, the CoN6 polyhedral frameworks transit from face-sharing (in CoN) to edge-sharing (in CoN2 and CoN3), and finally to isolated (in CoN5). Our study provides insights into the intricate interplay between structure evolution, bonding arrangements, and high-pressure synthesis in polynitrides, expanding the knowledge for the development of advanced energy materials.

Stabilization of N6 and N8 anionic units and 2D polynitrogen layers in high-pressure scandium polynitrides

Nitrogen catenation under high pressure leads to the formation of polynitrogen compounds with potentially unique properties. The exploration of the entire spectrum of poly- and oligo-nitrogen moieties is still in its earliest stages. Here, we report on four novel scandium nitrides, Sc2N6, Sc2N8, ScN5, and Sc4N3, synthesized by direct reaction between yttrium and nitrogen at 78-125 GPa and 2500 K in laser-heated diamond anvil cells. High-pressure synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that in the crystal structures of the nitrogen-rich Sc2N6, Sc2N8, and ScN5 phases nitrogen is catenated forming previously unknown N66- and N86- units and ∞ 2 ( N 5 3 - ) anionic corrugated 2D-polynitrogen layers consisting of fused N12 rings. Density functional theory calculations, confirming the dynamical stability of the synthesized compounds, show that Sc2N6 and Sc2N8 possess an anion-driven metallicity, while ScN5 is an indirect semiconductor. Sc2N6, Sc2N8, and ScN5 solids are promising high-energy-density materials with calculated volumetric energy density, detonation velocity, and detonation pressure higher than those of TNT.

Lanthanium nitride LaN9 featuring azide units: the first metal nine-nitride as a high-energy-density material

High-pressure phase diagrams of the La-N binary system were systematically constructed using the CALYPSO method and first-principles calculations. In addition to the pressure-induced La-N compounds reported previously, we have uncovered a hitherto unknown LaN9 structure in Pm3̄ symmetry stabilized within a narrow pressure range of 20-24.5 GPa. Notably, LaN9 stands as the first thermodynamically stable metal nine-nitrogen compound, featuring centrosymmetric linear N3 anion units and an edge-sharing LaN12 icosahedron. Charge transfer between the La and N atoms plays a crucial role in facilitating structural stability. Furthermore, we identified a novel Cm phase for LaN8, which has a lower enthalpy compared to the previously reported phase. N atoms in Cm LaN8 are polymerized into infinite N∞ chains. Calculations demonstrate the potential recoverability of LaN9 and Cm LaN8 under atmospheric conditions while preserving their initial polynitrogen configuration. From the perspective of detonation pressure and detonation velocity, LaN9 and Cm LaN8 exhibit excellent explosive performance in comparison to TNT and HMX, with estimated energy densities of 0.9 and 1.54 kJ g-1, respectively, indicating their potential utility as high-energy-density materials.

Purely single-bonded spiral nitrogen chains stabilized by trivalent lanthanum ions

Inspired by the single-bonded nitrogen chains stabilized by tetravalent cerium, pentavalent tantalum, and hexavalent tungsten atoms, we explored the possibility of single-bonded nitrogen polymorphs stabilized by trivalent lanthanum ions. To achieve this, we utilized the crystal structure search method on the phase diagram of binary La-N compounds. We identified three novel thermodynamically stable phases, the C2/c LaN3, P-1 LaN4, and P-1 LaN8. Among them, the C2/c phase with infinite helical poly-N6 chains becomes thermodynamically stable above 50 GPa. Each nitrogen atom in the poly-N6 chain acquires one extra electron, and the spiral chain is purely single-bonded. The C2/c phase has an indirect band gap of ∼1.6 eV at 60 GPa. Notably, the band gap exhibits non-monotonic behavior, decreases first and then increases with increasing pressure. This abnormal behavior is attributed to the significant bonding of two La-N bonds at around 35 GPa. Phonon spectrum calculations and AIMD simulations have confirmed that the C2/c phase can be quenched to ambient conditions with slight distortion, and it exhibits excellent detonation properties. Additionally, we also discovered armchair-like nitrogen chains in LaN4 and the armchair and zigzag-like mixed nitrogen chains in LaN8. These results provide valuable insights into the electronic and bonding properties of nitrides under high pressure and may have important implications for the design and development of novel functional materials.

Title: Structure determination of ζ-N2 from single-crystal X-ray diffraction and theoretical suggestion for the formation of amorphous nitrogen

The allotropy of solid molecular nitrogen is the consequence of a complex interplay between fundamental intermolecular as well as intramolecular interactions. Understanding the underlying physical mechanisms hinges on knowledge of the crystal structures of these molecular phases. That is especially true for ζ-N2, key to shed light on nitrogen's polymerization. Here, we perform single-crystal X-ray diffraction on laser-heated N2 samples at 54, 63, 70 and 86 GPa and solve and refine the hitherto unknown structure of ζ-N2. In its monoclinic unit cell (space group C2/c), 16 N2 molecules are arranged in a configuration similar to that of ε-N2. The structure model provides an explanation for the previously identified Raman and infrared lattice and vibrational modes of ζ-N2. Density functional theory calculations give an insight into the gradual delocalization of electronic density from intramolecular bonds to intermolecular space and suggest a possible pathway towards nitrogen's polymerization.

MAGUS: machine learning and graph theory assisted universal structure searcher

Crystal structure predictions based on first-principles calculations have gained great success in materials science and solid state physics. However, the remaining challenges still limit their applications in systems with a large number of atoms, especially the complexity of conformational space and the cost of local optimizations for big systems. Here, we introduce a crystal structure prediction method, MAGUS, based on the evolutionary algorithm, which addresses the above challenges with machine learning and graph theory. Techniques used in the program are summarized in detail and benchmark tests are provided. With intensive tests, we demonstrate that on-the-fly machine-learning potentials can be used to significantly reduce the number of expensive first-principles calculations, and the crystal decomposition based on graph theory can efficiently decrease the required configurations in order to find the target structures. We also summarized the representative applications of this method on several research topics, including unexpected compounds in the interior of planets and their exotic states at high pressure and high temperature (superionic, plastic, partially diffusive state, etc.); new functional materials (superhard, high-energy-density, superconducting, photoelectric materials), etc. These successful applications demonstrated that MAGUS code can help to accelerate the discovery of interesting materials and phenomena, as well as the significant value of crystal structure predictions in general.

High-pressure synthesis of fully sp2-hybridized polymeric nitrogen layer in potassium supernitride

Searching for fully sp²-hybridized layered structures is of fundamental importance because of their fascinating physical properties and potential to host topologically non-trivial electronic states. However, the synthesis of fully sp²-hybridized layered polymeric nitrogen structures remains a challenging work because of their low stability. Here, we report the synthesis of a fully sp²-hybridized layered polymeric nitrogen structure featuring fused 18-membered rings in potassium supernitride (K₂N₁₆) under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions. Bader charge analysis reveals that the potassium atomic layer stabilizes the unique sp²-hybridized polymeric nitrogen layers through the charge transfer effect in K₂N₁₆. The calculation of electronic structure indicates that K₂N₁₆ is a topological semimetal with multiple Dirac points and hosts higher-order Dirac fermions with cubic dispersion, which are contributed by the sp²-hybridized polymeric nitrogen layers arranged in P6/mcc symmetry. The high-pressure synthesis of the fully sp²-hybridized polymeric nitrogen layered structure provides promising prospects for exploring novel topological materials with effective stabilization routes.

Polar Nitride Perovskite LaWN3-δ with Orthorhombic Structure

Nitride perovskite LaWN₃ has been predicted to be a promising ferroelectric material with unique properties for diverse applications. However, due to the challenging sample preparation at ambient pressure, the crystal structure of this nitride remains unsolved, which results in many ambiguities in its properties. Here, the authors report a comprehensive study of LaWN₃ based on high-quality samples synthesized by a high-pressure method, leading to a definitive resolution of its crystal structure involving nitrogen deficiency. Combined with theoretical calculations, these results show that LaWN₃ adopts an orthorhombic Pna2₁ structure with a polar symmetry, possessing a unique atomic polarization along the c-axis. The associated atomic polar distortions in LaWN₃ are driven by covalent hybridization of W: 5d and N: 2p orbitals, opening a direct bandgap that explains its semiconducting behaviors. The structural stability and electronic properties of this nitride are also revealed to be closely associated with its nitrogen deficiency. The success in unraveling the structural and electronic ambiguities of LaWN₃ would provide important insights into the structures and properties of the family of nitride perovskites.

Aromatic hexazine [N6]4- anion featured in the complex structure of the high-pressure potassium nitrogen compound K9N56

The recent high-pressure synthesis of pentazolates and the subsequent stabilization of the aromatic [N₅]^- anion at atmospheric pressure have had an immense impact on nitrogen chemistry. Other aromatic nitrogen species have also been actively sought, including the hexaazabenzene N₆ ring. Although a variety of configurations and geometries have been proposed based on ab initio calculations, one that stands out as a likely candidate is the aromatic hexazine anion [N₆]^4-. Here we present the synthesis of this species, realized in the high-pressure potassium nitrogen compound K₉N₅₆ formed at high pressures (46 and 61 GPa) and high temperature (estimated to be above 2,000 K) by direct reaction between nitrogen and KN₃ in a laser-heated diamond anvil cell. The complex structure of K₉N₅₆-composed of 520 atoms per unit cell-was solved based on synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction and corroborated by density functional theory calculations. The observed hexazine anion [N₆]^4- is planar and proposed to be aromatic.

Giant Tunability of Charge Transport in 2D Inorganic Molecular Crystals by Pressure Engineering

The unique intermolecular van der Waals force in emerging two-dimensional inorganic molecular crystals (2DIMCs) endows them with highly tunable structures and properties upon applying external stimuli. Using high pressure to modulate the intermolecular bonding, here we reveal the highly tunable charge transport behavior in 2DIMCs for the first time, from an insulator to a semiconductor. As pressure increases, 2D α-Sb₂ O₃ molecular crystal undergoes three isostructural transitions, and the intermolecular bonding enhances gradually, which results in a considerably decreased band gap by 25 % and a greatly enhanced charge transport. Impressively, the in situ resistivity measurement of the α-Sb₂ O₃ flake shows a sharp drop by 5 orders of magnitude in 0-3.2 GPa. This work sheds new light on the manipulation of charge transport in 2DIMCs and is of great significance for promoting the fundamental understanding and potential applications of 2DIMCs in advanced modern technologies.

High-pressure synthesis and crystal structures of molybdenum nitride Mo3N5 with anisotropic compressibility by a nitrogen dimer

A novel high-pressure molybdenum nitride phase, Mo₃N₅, was synthesized at above 45 GPa via a nitridation reaction of molybdenum with nitrogen under high pressure using a laser-heated diamond anvil cell. Mo₃N₅, having an N-N dimer and 7-coordinated Mo sites, crystallizes in an orthorhombic structure with a space group of Cmcm (No. 63) without other prototype structures. The refined lattice parameters for Mo₃N₅ were a = 2.86201(2) Å, b = 7.07401(6) Å, and c = 14.59687(13) Å. The DFT enthalpy calculation suggested that Mo₃N₅ is a high-pressure stable phase, which is also consistent with an increasing coordination number compared to ambient- and low-pressure phases. The zero-pressure bulk modulus of Mo₃N₅ was determined to be K₀ = 328(4) GPa with K'₀ = 10.1(6) by the fitting for the compression curve, which is almost consistent with the theoretical E-V curve and elastic stiffness constants. The compressibility of Mo₃N₅ has axial anisotropy corresponding to the N-N dimer direction in the crystal structure.

Prediction of erbium-nitrogen compounds as high-performance high-energy-density materials

To explore high-energy-density materials, intense attention has been focused on how to stabilize the N-N bond in nitrogen-rich compounds. Here, we report several stable phases of erbium-nitrogen compounds ErN_xas high-energy-density materials. Specifically, the phase diagrams of stable high-pressure structuresImmm-ErN₂,C2-ErN₃,P1--ErN₄, andP1--ErN₆, are theoretically studied by combining first-principles calculation with particle swarm optimization algorithm. In these erbium-nitrogen compounds, the N-N bonds are stabilized as diatomic quasi-molecule N₂, helical-like nitrogen chains, armchair nitrogen chains, and armchair-anti-armchair nitrogen chains, respectively. Among them, theP1--ErN₆harbors excellent stability at high thermal up to 1000 K. More importantly, theP1--ErN₆has outstanding explosive performance with high-energy-density of 1.30 kJ g^-1, detonation velocity of 10.87 km s^-1, and detonation pressure of 812.98 kbar, which shows its promising application prospect as high-energy-density materials.

The New High-Pressure Phases of Nitrogen-Rich Ag-N Compounds

The high-pressure phase diagram of Ag-N compounds is enriched by proposing three stable high-pressure phases (P4/mmm-AgN2, P1-AgN7 and P-1-AgN7) and two metastable high-pressure phases (P-1-AgN4 and P-1-AgN8). The novel N7 rings and N20 rings are firstly found in the folded layer structure of P-1-AgN7. The electronic structure properties of predicted five structures are studied by the calculations of the band structure and DOS. The analyses of ELF and Bader charge show that the strong N-N covalent bond interaction and the weak Ag-N ionic bond interaction constitute the stable mechanism of Ag-N compounds. The charge transfer between the Ag and N atoms plays an important role for the structural stability. Moreover, the P-1-AgN7 and P-1-AgN8 with the high-energy density and excellent detonation properties are potential candidates for new high-energy density species.

Stabilization of hexazine rings in potassium polynitride at high pressure

Polynitrogen molecules are attractive for high-energy-density materials due to energy stored in nitrogen-nitrogen bonds; however, it remains challenging to find energy-efficient synthetic routes and stabilization mechanisms for these compounds. Direct synthesis from molecular dinitrogen requires overcoming large activation barriers and the reaction products are prone to inherent inhomogeneity. Here we report the synthesis of planar N₆^2- hexazine dianions, stabilized in K₂N₆, from potassium azide (KN₃) on laser heating in a diamond anvil cell at pressures above 45 GPa. The resulting K₂N₆, which exhibits a metallic lustre, remains metastable down to 20 GPa. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy were used to identify this material, through good agreement with the theoretically predicted structural, vibrational and electronic properties for K₂N₆. The N₆^2- rings characterized here are likely to be present in other high-energy-density materials stabilized by pressure. Under 30 GPa, an unusual N₂^0.75--containing compound with the formula K₃(N₂)₄ was formed instead.

Formation of twelve-fold iodine coordination at high pressure

Halogen compounds have been studied widely due to their unique hypercoordinated and hypervalent features. Generally, in halogen compounds, the maximal coordination number of halogens is smaller than eight. Here, based on the particle swarm optimization method and first-principles calculations, we report an exotically icosahedral cage-like hypercoordinated IN6 compound composed of N6 rings and an unusual iodine-nitrogen covalent bond network. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first halogen compound showing twelve-fold coordination of halogen. High pressure and the presence of N6 rings reduce the energy level of the 5d orbitals of iodine, making them part of the valence orbital. Highly symmetrical covalent bonding networks contribute to the formation of twelve-fold iodine hypercoordination. Moreover, our theoretical analysis suggests that a halogen element with a lower atomic number has a weaker propensity for valence expansion in halogen nitrides.

Materials by design at high pressures

Pressure, a fundamental thermodynamic variable, can generate two essential effects on materials. First, pressure can create new high-pressure phases via modification of the potential energy surface. Second, pressure can produce new compounds with unconventional stoichiometries via modification of the compositional landscape. These new phases or compounds often exhibit exotic physical and chemical properties that are inaccessible at ambient pressure. Recent studies have established a broad scope for developing materials with specific desired properties under high pressure. Crystal structure prediction methods and first-principles calculations can be used to design materials and thus guide subsequent synthesis plans prior to any experimental work. A key example is the recent theory-initiated discovery of the record-breaking high-temperature superhydride superconductors H3S and LaH10 with critical temperatures of 200 K and 260 K, respectively. This work summarizes and discusses recent progress in the theory-oriented discovery of new materials under high pressure, including hydrogen-rich superconductors, high-energy-density materials, inorganic electrides, and noble gas compounds. The discovery of the considered compounds involved substantial theoretical contributions. We address future challenges facing the design of materials at high pressure and provide perspectives on research directions with significant potential for future discoveries.

Crystal and Electronic Structure of U7Te12-Type Tungsten Nitride Synthesized under High Pressure

Tungsten nitride continues to drive fundamental interests because of its potential as a functional compound, which combines features such as high hardness together with thermal, chemical, and wear resistance. Here, we report a novel tungsten nitride phase synthesized from MoC-type WN_0.6 and molecular nitrogen after laser irradiation at P = 70 GPa in a diamond anvil cell. This novel phase is quenchable at ambient pressure and determined to be U₇Te₁₂-type tungsten nitride and crystallizes in the hexagonal space group (P6) having lattice parameters of a = 8.2398(3) Å, c = 2.94948(14) Å, and V = 173.423(13) ų. Tungsten atoms are coordinated to eight and nine nitrogen atoms, higher than previously reported tungsten nitrides. The bulk modulus is determined to be K₀ = 312 (5) GPa (K₀^' = 4.0 fixed), and DFT calculations predict that U₇Te₁₂-type W₇N₁₂ has a metallic nature.

Pressure-Induced Transition from Spin to Superconducting States in Novel MnN2

The connection between magnetism and superconductivity has long been discussed since the discovery of Fe-based superconductors. Here, we report the discovery of a pressure-induced transition from a spin to a superconducting state in novel MnN₂ based on ab initio calculations. The superconducting state can be obtained in two ways: the first is the pressure-induced transition from an AFM-P2₁/m to an NM-I4/mmm phase at 30 GPa, while the other is the pressure-induced transition from an FM-I4/mmm phase to magnetic vanishing at 14 GPa, which leads to a structural transition with the distortion of octahedrons to tetragonal pyramids. NM-I4/mmm-MnN₂ is superconductive with T _c ≈ 17.6 K at 0 GPa. In the second way, electronic structure calculations indicate that the system transforms from a high-spin state to a low-spin state due to increasing crystal-field splitting, causing disappearance of magnetism; more electron occupancy around the Fermi level drives the emergence of superconductivity. Remarkably, I4/mmm-MnN₂ can achieve mutual spin-to-superconducting state transformation by pressure. Moreover, the AFM-P2₁/m-MnN₂ phase is extremely incompressible with the hardness above 20 GPa. Our results provide a reasonable and systematic interpretation for the connection between magnetism and superconductivity and give clues for achieving spin-to-superconducting switching materials with certain crystal features.

Polymerization of Nitrogen in Nitrogen-Fluorine Compounds under Pressure

A wide range of polynitrogen species have attracted much attention because of their potential applications as high-energy-density materials. Until now, predicted polynitrogen was found to be negatively charged, with charge transfer from introduced atoms to nitrogen in nitrogen-bearing compounds. Using an evolutionary algorithm combined with first-principles calculations, stoichiometries and structures in nitrogen-fluorine compounds at pressures ranging from 0 to 200 GPa are investigated. In addition to two fluorine-rich compounds NF3 and NF5, two other compounds, NF and N6F, emerge with increasing pressure. N6F, as a nitrogen-rich compound, will become stable at pressures greater than 180 GPa with a positively charged nitrogen network. Above 120 GPa, the NF compound with polymeric zigzag nitrogen chains is discovered, and it is quenchable to the ambient conditions, acquiring the highest energy density of 5.38 kJ/g among reported binary covalent nitrogen compounds. These newly predicted N-F compounds are useful in understanding the chemistry of polynitrogen.

Stability of neutral molecular polynitrogens: energy content and decomposition mechanisms

The potential application of all-nitrogen molecules as high energy density materials (HEDMs) has been attracting considerable scientific effort. If stable enough to be synthesized and stored, these systems may be used as a green source of energy. However, it is very difficult to obtain these structures under mild experimental conditions. Theoretical chemistry may aid in the search for polynitrogens that are more likely to have experimental usability. The barriers towards decomposition are an effective way to assess their stability, but these have not been thoroughly studied. Most of the previous effort in this direction focus on a single N x case, each employing different accuracy levels, and the decomposition of caged structures has been little explored. Here we explore the stability and decomposition of several neutral molecular polynitrogens of different sizes and shapes using a common and accurate theoretical framework in order to compare among them, search for patterns and identify potential candidates for synthesis. We focus especially on new caged geometries, and our results indicate that the prismatic ones can be expected to present higher energy densities and be very stable with respect to unimolecular decomposition. It is shown that the energy content can be clearly stratified between chain, ring, cage and prismatic cage structures.

Pressure-induced novel nitrogen-rich aluminum nitrides: AlN6, Al2N7 and AlN7 with polymeric nitrogen chains and rings

Pressure-induced non-molecular phases of polymeric nitrogen have potential applications in the field of energetic materials. Here, through a structural search method combined with first-principles calculations, we have predicted four novel nitrogen-rich aluminum nitrides C2/m-AlN6, Cm-Al2N7, C2-Al2N7 and P1-AlN7. Nitrogen atoms polymerize into infinite chains in C2/m-AlN6, C2-Al2N7 and P1-AlN7 structures and form N3 chains and N4 rings in Cm-Al2N7. C2/m-AlN6 is stable in the pressure range from 30 to 80 GPa and Cm-Al2N7, C2-Al2N7 and P1-AlN7 are metastable in the pressure ranges of 35-65, 65-80 and 41-80 GPa, respectively. The present study predicts that C2/m-AlN6 has a superconducting transition temperature of 18.9 K at 0 GPa and can be quenched and recovered under ambient conditions. The energy densities of C2/m-AlN6, Cm-Al2N7, C2-Al2N7 and P1-AlN7 compounds are expected to be 4.80, 4.59, 5.46 and 5.59 kJ g-1, respectively, due to their high nitrogen content, indicating that they have potential to be high-energy density materials. The calculated Vickers hardness of C2/m-AlN6, Cm-Al2N7, Cm-Al2N7 and P1-AlN7 is 43.86, 39.32, 63.96 and 33.58 GPa, respectively, showing that the novel nitrogen-rich aluminum nitrides are potential superhard materials as well. This study may encourage further experimental exploration of high N content superhard or high-energy density nitrides.
