High-Order Phase-Dependent Asymmetry in the Above-Threshold Ionization Plateau

High-order above-threshold ionisation of diatomic molecules by few-cycle bicircular and orthogonally polarised two-colour pulses

Improved molecular strong-field approximation theory is used to calculate the ionisation probability for the high-order above-threshold ionisation process induced by a few-cycle pulse with two carrier frequencies and one envelope. The asymmetry in the photoelectron momentum distribution is due to the ultrashort nature of the driving pulse and due to the relative orientation of the molecule with respect to the laser field. We introduce the generalised asymmetry parameter, which can be used to quantitatively measure the asymmetry between the photoelectron spectra along arbitrarily many selected directions. We investigate the difference between the asymmetry parameters calculated for atomic and molecular targets and show that the contributions to the asymmetry strongly depend on the type of the employed driving pulse. For the driving pulse with components that are linearly polarised with mutually orthogonal polarisations, we find that the main source of the asymmetry, especially in the high-energy part of the spectrum, is the ultrashort nature of the pulse. The relative orientation of the molecule with respect to the laser pulse only affects the low- and medium-energy parts of the spectrum. On the other hand, for the driving pulse with circularly polarised counterrotating components, the asymmetry introduced by molecular orientation is more pronounced. We also analyse the influence of the characteristics of molecular orbitals on the asymmetries using the examples of N2 and O2 molecules.

Study of the effect of higher-order dispersions on photoionisation induced by ultrafast laser pulses applying a classical theoretical method

We investigated the effect of higher order dispersion on ultrafast photoionisation with Classical Trajectory Monte Carlo (CTMC) method for hydrogen and krypton atoms. In our calculations we used linearly polarised ultrashort 7 fs laser pulses, \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$6.5 \times 10^{14} \mathrm {W/cm^{2}}$$\end{document}6.5×1014W/cm2 intensity, and a central wavelength of 800 nm. Our results show that electrons with the highest kinetic energies are obtained with transform limited (TL) pulses. The shaping of the pulses with negative second- third- or fourth- order dispersion results in higher ionisation yield and electron energies compared to pulses shaped with positive dispersion values. We have also investigated how the Carrier Envelope Phase (CEP) dependence of the ionisation is infuenced by dispersion. We calculated the left-right asymmetry as a function of energy and CEP for sodium atoms employing pulses of 4.5 fs, 800 nm central wavelength, and \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$4 \times 10^{12}\mathrm {W/cm^{2}}$$\end{document}4×1012W/cm2 intensity. We found that the left-right asymmetry is more pronounced for pulses shaped with positive Group Delay Dispersion (GDD). It was also found that shaping a pulse with increasing amounts of GDD in absolute value blurs the CEP dependence, which is attributed to the increasing number of optical cycles.

Nondipole effects in terahetz-pulse-assisted strong-field ionization

Nondipole effects in processes assisted by a THz field having the strength of a few MV/cm can be significant due to its long wavelength. We illustrate this for strong-laser-field-induced ionization assisted by a THz field. To this end, we generalize our strong-field-approximation theory so that it includes the first-order term in a 1/c expansion of the vector potential. We show that in this case, in addition to a shift of the maximum of the photoelectron momentum distribution, the differential ionization probability as well as the cutoff energy can be significantly increased. For an explanation of these unexpected results we use the saddle-point method adjusted to include nondipole effects.

Improved Carrier-Envelope Phase Determination Method for Few-Cycle Laser Pulses Using High-Order Above-Threshold Ionization

Recent studies indicate that the stereo-ATI carrier-envelope phase meter (CEPM) is an effective method to determine the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) of each and every single few-cycle laser pulse. In this method, a two-dimensional parametric asymmetry plot (PAP), which can be obtained with the measured data in two short time-of-flight intervals, is applied to extract the CEP. Thus, part of the data containing useful CEP information is discarded in the PAP method. In this work, an improved method was developed to effectively exploit most of the experimental data. By this method, we achieve a CEP precision of 57 mrad over the entire 2π range for 5.0 fs laser pulses.

Strong-laser-field-induced ionization assisted by a terahertz pulse

Extreme terahertz (THz) pulses can be generated via interaction of strong infrared ultrashort laser pulses with a suitable target. Inverting this scheme, we propose to use such THz pulses to control strong-laser-field-driven processes. In particular, we show that for THz-pulse-assisted strong-laser-field ionization the electron yield can be increased by one order of magnitude for some energies, and that the maximal emitted photoelectron energy can be a few times higher than that realized with the laser field alone. This can be achieved with the THz field intensity many orders of magnitude lower than that of the ionizing laser field. The only requirement is that the vector potential amplitude of the THz field, which governs the electron dynamics after the ionization by the laser field, be comparable with that of the used laser field. An important control parameter is the time delay between the THz pulse and the laser pulse. Strong-field ionization of Cs atoms is used for an illustration. The numerical results are obtained applying the improved strong-field approximation. For a physical explanation, we use quantum-orbit theory supported by the modified saddle-point method, as well as a classical model.

Symmetries and Selection Rules of the Spectra of Photoelectrons and High-Order Harmonics Generated by Field-Driven Atoms and Molecules

Using the strong-field approximation we systematically investigate the selection rules for high-order harmonic generation and the symmetry properties of the angle-resolved photoelectron spectra for various atomic and molecular targets exposed to one-component and two-component laser fields. These include bicircular fields and orthogonally polarized two-color fields. The selection rules are derived directly from the dynamical symmetries of the driving field. Alternatively, we demonstrate that they can be obtained using the conservation of the projection of the total angular momentum on the quantization axis. We discuss how the harmonic spectra of atomic targets depend on the type of the ground state or, for molecular targets, on the pertinent molecular orbital. In addition, we briefly discuss some properties of the high-order harmonic spectra generated by a few-cycle laser field. The symmetry properties of the angle-resolved photoelectron momentum distribution are also determined by the dynamical symmetry of the driving field. We consider the first two terms in a Born series expansion of the T matrix, which describe the direct and the rescattered electrons. Dynamical symmetries involving time translation generate rotational symmetries obeyed by both terms. However, those that involve time reversal generate reflection symmetries that are only observed by the direct electrons. Finally, we explain how the symmetry properties, imposed by the dynamical symmetry of the driving field, are altered for molecular targets.
