Experimentally Accessible Bounds on Distillable Entanglement from Entropic Uncertainty Relations

Shannon and von Neumann entropies of multi-qubit Schrödinger's cat states

Using IBM's publicly accessible quantum computers, we have analyzed the entropies of Schrödinger's cat states, which have the form Ψ = (1/2)^1/2 [|0 0 0⋯0〉 + |1 1 1⋯1〉]. We have obtained the average Shannon entropy S_So of the distribution over measurement outcomes from 75 runs of 8192 shots, for each of the numbers of entangled qubits, on each of the quantum computers tested. For the distribution over N fault-free measurements on pure cat states, S_So would approach one as N → ∞, independent of the number of qubits; but we have found that S_So varies nearly linearly with the number of qubits n. The slope of S_Soversus the number of qubits differs among computers with the same quantum volumes. We have developed a two-parameter model that reproduces the near-linear dependence of the entropy on the number of qubits, based on the probabilities of observing the output 0 when a qubit is set to |0〉 and 1 when it is set to |1〉. The slope increases as the error rate increases. The slope provides a sensitive measure of the accuracy of a quantum computer, so it serves as a quickly determinable index of performance. We have used tomographic methods with error mitigation as described in the qiskit documentation to find the density matrix ρ and evaluate the von Neumann entropies of the cat states. From the reduced density matrices for individual qubits, we have calculated the entanglement entropies. The reduced density matrices represent mixed states with approximately 50/50 probabilities for states |0〉 and |1〉. The entanglement entropies are very close to one.

Recovering Quantum Correlations in Optical Lattices from Interaction Quenches

Quantum simulations with ultracold atoms in optical lattices open up an exciting path toward understanding strongly interacting quantum systems. Atom gas microscopes are crucial for this as they offer single-site density resolution, unparalleled in other quantum many-body systems. However, currently a direct measurement of local coherent currents is out of reach. In this Letter, we show how to achieve that by measuring densities that are altered in response to quenches to noninteracting dynamics, e.g., after tilting the optical lattice. For this, we establish a data analysis method solving the closed set of equations relating tunneling currents and atom number dynamics, allowing us to reliably recover the full covariance matrix, including off-diagonal terms representing coherent currents. The signal processing builds upon semidefinite optimization, providing bona fide covariance matrices optimally matching the observed data. We demonstrate how the obtained information about noncommuting observables allows one to quantify entanglement at finite temperature, which opens up the possibility to study quantum correlations in quantum simulations going beyond classical capabilities.

Universal separability criterion for arbitrary density matrices from causal properties of separable and entangled quantum states

General physical background of famous Peres-Horodecki positive partial transpose (PH- or PPT-) separability criterion is revealed. Especially, the physical sense of partial transpose operation is shown to be equivalent to what one could call as the "local causality reversal" (LCR-) procedure for all separable quantum systems or to the uncertainty in a global time arrow direction in all entangled cases. Using these universal causal considerations brand new general relations for the heuristic causal separability criterion have been proposed for arbitrary [Formula: see text] density matrices acting in [Formula: see text] Hilbert spaces which describe the ensembles of N quantum systems of D eigenstates each. Resulting general formulas have been then analyzed for the widest special type of one-parametric density matrices of arbitrary dimensionality, which model a number of equivalent quantum subsystems being equally connected (EC-) with each other to arbitrary degree by means of a single entanglement parameter p. In particular, for the family of such EC-density matrices it has been found that there exists a number of N- and D-dependent separability (or entanglement) thresholds [Formula: see text] for the values of the corresponded entanglement parameter p, which in the simplest case of a qubit-pair density matrix in [Formula: see text] Hilbert space are shown to reduce to well-known results obtained earlier independently by Peres (Phys Rev Lett 77:1413-1415, 1996) and Horodecki (Phys Lett A 223(1-2):1-8, 1996). As the result, a number of remarkable features of the entanglement thresholds for EC-density matrices has been described for the first time. All novel results being obtained for the family of arbitrary EC-density matrices are shown to be applicable to a wide range of both interacting and non-interacting (at the moment of measurement) multi-partite quantum systems, such as arrays of qubits, spin chains, ensembles of quantum oscillators, strongly correlated quantum many-body systems with the possibility of many-body localization, etc.
