Gap Sensitivity Reveals Universal Behaviors in Optimized Photonic Crystal and Disordered Networks

Bandgap fluctuations and robustness in two-dimensional hyperuniform dielectric materials

We numerically study the statistical fluctuations of photonic band gaps in ensembles of stealthy hyperuniform disordered patterns. We find that at low stealthiness, where correlations are weak, band gaps of different system realizations appear over a wide frequency range, are narrow, and generally do not overlap. Interestingly, above a critical value of stealthiness χ≳0.35, the bandgaps become large and overlap significantly from realization to realization, while a second gap appears. These observations extend our understanding of photonic bandgaps in disordered systems and provide information on the robustness of gaps in practical applications.

Evolving scattering networks for engineering disorder

Network science provides a powerful tool for unraveling the complexities of social, technological and biological systems. Constructing networks using wave phenomena is also of great interest in devising advanced hardware for machine learning, as shown in optical neural networks. Although most wave-based networks have employed static network models, the impact of evolving models in network science provides strong motivation to apply dynamical network modeling to wave physics. Here the concept of evolving scattering networks for scattering phenomena is developed. The network is defined by links, node degrees and their evolution processes modeling multi-particle interferences, which directly determine scattering from disordered materials. I demonstrate the concept by examining network-based material classification, microstructure screening and preferential attachment in evolutions, which are applied to stealthy hyperuniformity. The results enable independent control of scattering from different length scales, revealing superdense material phases in short-range order. The proposed concept provides a bridge between wave physics and network science to resolve multiscale material complexities and open-system material design.

Asymptotics and Summation of the Effective Properties of Suspensions, Simple Liquids and Composites

We review the problem of summation for a very short truncation of a power series by means of special resummation techniques inspired by the field-theoretical renormalization group. Effective viscosity (EV) of active and passive suspensions is studied by means of a special algebraic renormalization approach applied to the first and second-order expansions in volume fractions of particles. EV of the 2D and 3D passive suspensions is analysed by means of various self-similar approximants such as iterated roots, exponential approximants, super-exponential approximants and root approximants. General formulae for all concentrations are derived. A brief introduction to the rheology of micro-swimmers is given. Microscopic expressions for the intrinsic viscosity of the active system of puller-like microswimmers are obtained. Special attention is given to the problem of the calculation of the critical indices and amplitudes of the EV and to the sedimentation rate in the vicinity of known critical points. Critical indices are calculated from the short truncation by means of minimal difference and minimal derivative conditions on the fixed points imposed directly on the critical properties. Accurate expressions are presented for the non-local diffusion coefficient of a simple liquid in the vicinity of a critical point. Extensions and corrections to the celebrated Kawasaki formula are discussed. We also discuss the effective conductivity for the classical analog of graphene and calculate the effective critical index for superconductivity dependent on the concentration of vacancies. Finally, we discuss the effective conductivity of a random 3D composite and calculate the superconductivity critical index of a random 3D composite.

Spectroscopic Ellipsometry and Optical Modelling of Structurally Colored Opaline Thin-Films

The method of spectroscopic ellipsometry is applied to complex periodic nanomaterials, consisting of shear-ordered polymeric nanosphere composites, with intense resonant structural color. A corresponding multilayer optical quasi-model of the system, parametrizing the inherent degree of sample disorder and encompassing key properties of effective refractive-index and index-contrast, is developed to elucidate the correlation between the ∆ and Ψ ellipsometric parameters and the shear-induced opaline crystallinity. These approaches offer reliable means of in-line tracking of the sample quality of such “polymer opals” in large scale processing and applications.

Macroporous Silica Foams Fabricated via Soft Colloid Templating

Macroporous materials with controlled pore sizes are of high scientific and technological interest, due to their low specific weight, as well as unique acoustic, thermal, or optical properties. Solid foams made of titania, silica, or silicon, as representative materials, have been previously obtained with several hundred nanometer pore sizes, by using sacrificial templates such as spherical emulsion droplets or colloidal particles. Macroporous structures in particular are excellent candidates as photonic materials with applications in structural coloration and photonic bandgap devices. However, whereas using spherical building blocks as templates may provide tight control over pore shape and size, it results in materials with an often unfavorable local topology. Templating dry-foam or compressed-emulsion structures appear as attractive alternatives, but have not been demonstrated so far for submicron pore sizes. Herein, the use of soft, flexible microgel colloids decorated with silica nanoparticles as templates of macroporous foams is reported. These purposely synthesized core-shell colloids are assembled at ultra-high effective volume fractions by centrifuging and thermal swelling, thereby resulting in uniform disordered materials with facetted pores, mimicking dry foams. After removal of the polymer component via calcination, lightweight pure silica structures are obtained with a well-defined cellular or network topology.
