General Framework of Canonical Quasinormal Mode Analysis for Extreme Nano-optics

Nonlinear chaotic dynamics in nonlocal plasmonic core-shell nanoparticle dimer

Plasmonic nanoparticles can be employed as a promising integrated platform for lumped optical nanoelements with unprecedentedly high integration capacity and efficient nanoscale ultrafast nonlinear functionality. Further minimizing the size of plasmonic nanoelements will lead to a rich variety of nonlocal optical effects due to the nonlocal nature of electrons in plasmonic materials. In this work, we theoretically investigate the nonlinear chaotic dynamics of the plasmonic core-shell nanoparticle dimer consisting of a nonlocal plasmonic core and a Kerr-type nonlinear shell at nanometer scale. This kind of optical nanoantennae could provide novel switching functionality: tristable, astable multivibrators, and chaos generator. We give a qualitative analysis on the influence of nonlocality and aspect ratio of core-shell nanoparticles on the chaos regime as well as on the nonlinear dynamical processing. It is demonstrated that considering nonlocality is very important in the design of such nonlinear functional photonic nanoelements with ultra-small size. Compared to solid nanoparticles, core-shell nanoparticles provide an additional freedom to adjust their plasmonic property hence tuning the chaotic dynamic regime in the geometric parameter space. This kind of nanoscale nonlinear system could be the candidate for a nonlinear nanophotonic device with a tunable nonlinear dynamical response.

Quasinormal Mode Expansion Theory for Mesoscale Plasmonic Nanoresonators: An Analytical Treatment of Nonclassical Electromagnetic Boundary Condition

Nonclassical quantum effects will significantly affect the optical response of plasmonic nanoresonators with mesoscale feature sizes between about 2 and 20 nm, and can be fully described by the nonclassical electromagnetic boundary condition (NEBC) expressed with the surface-response Feibelman d parameters. In this Letter, a quasinormal mode (QNM) expansion theory under the NEBC is proposed. By adopting the easily solved classical QNMs under the classical electromagnetic boundary condition as a complete set of basis functions, rigorous expansions of the nonclassical source-free QNMs and source-excited electromagnetic field under the nonperturbative NEBC are provided. With the obtained nonclassical QNMs as basis functions, expansions of the nonclassical source-excited field and Green's function tensor are further obtained. These expansions have a fully analytical dependence on the NEBC and classical QNMs, thus transparently unveiling their impact on the nonclassical QNMs and source-excited electromagnetic field. For instance, a new expression of mode volume is proposed for analyzing the nonclassically corrected Purcell factor. The proposed theory is physically intuitive and computationally efficient which is enabled by the dominance of a small set of classical QNMs, thus providing an efficient tool for understanding and designing mesoscale plasmonic nanoresonators.

Extremely confined gap plasmon modes: when nonlocality matters

Historically, the field of plasmonics has been relying on the framework of classical electrodynamics, with the local-response approximation of material response being applied even when dealing with nanoscale metallic structures. However, when the confinement of electromagnetic radiation approaches atomic scales, mesoscopic effects are anticipated to become observable, e.g., those associated with the nonlocal electrodynamic surface response of the electron gas. Here, we investigate nonlocal effects in propagating gap surface plasmon modes in ultrathin metal–dielectric–metal planar waveguides, exploiting monocrystalline gold flakes separated by atomic-layer-deposited aluminum oxide. We use scanning near-field optical microscopy to directly access the near-field of such confined gap plasmon modes and measure their dispersion relation via their complex-valued propagation constants. We compare our experimental findings with the predictions of the generalized nonlocal optical response theory to unveil signatures of nonlocal damping, which becomes appreciable for few-nanometer-sized dielectric gaps.

When approaching atomic-scale confinement of the electromagnetic radiation nonlocal effects are not negligible. Here the authors approach that regime, probing extremely confined gap plasmon modes by means of scanning near-field optical microscopy, and suggesting that quantum nonlocal corrections should be taken into account.

Direct Electro Plasmonic and Optic Modulation via a Nanoscopic Electron Reservoir

Direct electrical tuning of localized plasmons at optical frequencies boasts the fascinating prospects of being ultrafast and energy efficient and having an ultrasmall footprint. However, the prospects are obscured by the grand challenge of effectively modulating the very large number of conduction electrons in three-dimensional metallic structures. Here we propose the concept of nanoscopic electron reservoir (NER) for direct electro plasmonic and electro-optic modulation. A NER is a few-to-ten-nanometer size metal feature on a metal host and supports a localized plasmon mode. We provide a general guideline to construct highly electrically susceptible NERs and theoretically demonstrate pronounced direct electrical tuning of the plasmon mode by exploiting the nonclassical effects of conduction electrons. Moreover, we show the electro-plasmonic tuning can be efficiently translated into modulation of optical scattering by utilizing the antenna effect of the metal host for the NER. Our work extends the landscape of electro plasmonic modulation and opens appealing new opportunities for quantum plasmonics.

Normalization, orthogonality, and completeness of quasinormal modes of open systems: the case of electromagnetism [Invited]

The scattering of electromagnetic waves by resonant systems is determined by the excitation of the quasinormal modes (QNMs), i.e. the eigenmodes, of the system. This Review addresses three fundamental concepts in relation to the representation of the scattered field as a superposition of the excited QNMs: normalization, orthogonality, and completeness. Orthogonality and normalization enable a straightforward assessment of the QNM excitation strength for any incident wave. Completeness guarantees that the scattered field can be faithfully expanded into the complete QNM basis. These concepts are not trivial for non-conservative (non-Hermitian) systems and have driven many theoretical developments since initial studies in the 70's. Yet, they are not easy to grasp from the extensive and scattered literature, especially for newcomers in the field. After recalling fundamental results obtained in initial studies on the completeness of the QNM basis for simple resonant systems, we review recent achievements and the debate on the normalization, clarify under which circumstances the QNM basis is complete, and highlight the concept of QNM regularization with complex coordinate transforms.
