Surface Protolysis and Its Kinetics Impact the Electrical Double Layer

Double-Layer Distribution of Hydronium and Hydroxide Ions in the Air-Water Interface

The acid-base nature of the aqueous interface has long been controversial. Most macroscopic experiments suggest that the air-water interface is basic based on the detection of negative charges at the interface that indicates the enrichment of hydroxides (OH-), whereas microscopic studies mostly support the acidic air-water interface with the observation of hydronium (H3O+) accumulation in the top layer of the interface. It is crucial to clarify the interfacial preference of OH- and H3O+ ions for rationalizing the debate. In this work, we perform deep potential molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the preferential distribution of OH- and H3O+ ions at the aqueous interfaces. The neural network potential energy surface is trained based on density functional theory calculations with the SCAN functional, which can accurately describe the diffusion of these two ions both in the interface and in the bulk water. In contrast to the previously reported single ion enrichment, we show that both OH- and H3O+ surprisingly prefer to accumulate in interfaces but at different interfacial depths, rendering a double-layer ionic distribution within ∼1 nm near the Gibbs dividing surface. The H3O+ preferentially resides in the topmost layer of the interface, but the OH-, which is enriched in the deeper interfacial layer, has a higher equilibrium concentration due to the more negative free energy of interfacial stabilization [-0.90 (OH-) vs -0.56 (H3O+) kcal/mol]. The present finding of the ionic double-layer distribution may qualitatively offer a self-consistent explanation for the long-term controversy about the acid-base nature of the air-water interface.

Confined Electrolytes Show Bulk Dynamics Modulated by Hydrodynamic Couplings with the Walls

We use numerical simulations at the mesoscopic scale, namely, multiparticle collision dynamics (MPCD), to investigate the properties of electrolyte solutions in a charged slit pore. The solution is described within the primitive model of electrolytes, where ions are charged hard spheres embedded in a dielectric medium. Hydrodynamic couplings between ions and with the charged walls are precisely accounted for by the MPCD algorithm. We show that the dynamic properties of ions in this situation strongly differ from the behavior at infinite dilution (ideal case), contrary to what is usually assumed in the usual Poisson-Nernst-Planck description of this kind of systems. As a consequence of confinement, the diffusion coefficients of ions unexpectedly increase with the average ionic density in the systems. This is due to a decrease of the proportion of ions that are slowed down by the wall. Moreover, nonequilibrium simulations are used to estimate the electrical conductivity of these confined electrolytes. We show that the simulation results can be accounted for quantitatively by combining bulk descriptions of the electrical conductivity of electrolytes with a simple description of the hydrodynamics of ions in a slit pore.

A Review of Laser-Induced Crystallization from Solution

Crystallization abounds in nature and industrial practice. A plethora of indispensable products ranging from agrochemicals and pharmaceuticals to battery materials are produced in crystalline form in industrial practice. Yet, our control over the crystallization process across scales, from molecular to macroscopic, is far from complete. This bottleneck not only hinders our ability to engineer the properties of crystalline products essential for maintaining our quality of life but also hampers progress toward a sustainable circular economy in resource recovery. In recent years, approaches leveraging light fields have emerged as promising alternatives to manipulate crystallization. In this review article, we classify laser-induced crystallization approaches where light-material interactions are utilized to influence crystallization phenomena according to proposed underlying mechanisms and experimental setups. We discuss nonphotochemical laser-induced nucleation, high-intensity laser-induced nucleation, laser trapping-induced crystallization, and indirect methods in detail. Throughout the review, we highlight connections among these separately evolving subfields to encourage the interdisciplinary exchange of ideas.

Coulombic Surface-Ion Interactions Induce Nonlinear and Chemistry-Specific Charging Kinetics

While important for many industrial applications, chemical reactions responsible for the charging of solids in water are often poorly understood. We theoretically investigate the charging kinetics of solid-liquid interfaces and find that the time-dependent equilibration of surface charge contains key information not only on the reaction mechanism, but also on the valency of the reacting ions. We construct a nonlinear differential equation describing surface charging by combining chemical Langmuir kinetics and electrostatic Poisson-Boltzmann theory. Our results reveal a clear distinction between late-time (near-equilibrium) and short-time (far-from-equilibrium) relaxation rates, the ratio of which contains information on the charge valency and ad- or desorption mechanism of the charging process. Similarly, we find that single-ion reactions can be distinguished from two-ion reactions, as the latter show an inflection point during equilibration. Interestingly, such inflection points are characteristic of autocatalytic reactions, and we conclude that the Coulombic ion-surface interaction is an autocatalytic feedback mechanism.
