Anomalous Transport of Tracers in Active Baths

Shape-dependent motility of polar inclusions in active baths

Collections of persistently moving active particles are an example of a nonequilibrium heat bath. One way to study the nature of nonequilibrium fluctuations in such systems is to follow the dynamics of an embedded probe particle. With this aim, we study the dynamics of an anisotropic inclusion embedded in a bath of active particles. By studying various statistical correlation functions of the dynamics, we show that the emergent motility of this inclusion depends on its shape as well as the properties of the active bath. We demonstrate that both the decorrelation time of the net force on the inclusion and the dwell time of bath particles in a geometrical trap on the inclusion have a nonmonotonic dependence on its shape. We also find that the motility of the inclusion is optimal when the volume fraction of the active bath is close to the value for the onset of motility induced phase separation.

Active transport of a passive colloid in a bath of run-and-tumble particles

The dispersion of a passive colloid immersed in a bath of non-interacting and non-Brownian run-and-tumble microswimmers in two dimensions is analyzed using stochastic simulations and an asymptotic theory, both based on a minimal model of swimmer-colloid collisions characterized solely by frictionless steric interactions. We estimate the effective long-time diffusivity D of the suspended colloid resulting from its interaction with the active bath, and elucidate its dependence on the level of activity (persistence length of swimmer trajectories), the mobility ratio of the colloid to a swimmer, and the number density of swimmers in the bath. We also propose a semi-analytical model for the colloid diffusivity in terms of the variance and correlation time of the net fluctuating active force on the colloid resulting from swimmer collisions. Quantitative agreement is found between numerical simulations and analytical results in the experimentally-relevant regime of low swimmer density, low mobility ratio, and high activity.

Anomalous dynamics of a passive droplet in active turbulence

Motion of a passive deformable object in an active environment serves as a representative of both in-vivo systems such as intracellular particle motion in Acanthamoeba castellanii, or in-vitro systems such as suspension of beads inside dense swarms of Escherichia coli. Theoretical modeling of such systems is challenging due to the requirement of well resolved hydrodynamics which can explore the spatiotemporal correlations around the suspended passive object in the active fluid. We address this critical lack of understanding using coupled hydrodynamic equations for nematic liquid crystals with finite active stress to model the active bath, and a suspended nematic droplet with zero activity. The droplet undergoes deformation fluctuations and its movement shows periods of "runs" and "stays". At relatively low interfacial tension, the droplet begins to break and mix with the outer active bath. We establish that the motion of the droplet is influenced by the interplay of spatial correlations of the flow and the size of the droplet. The mean square displacement shows a transition from ballistic to normal diffusion which depends on the droplet size. We discuss this transition in relation to spatiotemporal scales associated with velocity correlations of the active bath and the droplet.

Time-dependent properties of run-and-tumble particles. II. Current fluctuations

We investigate steady-state current fluctuations in two models of hardcore run-and-tumble particles (RTPs) on a periodic one-dimensional lattice of L sites, for arbitrary tumbling rate γ=τ_{p}^{-1} and density ρ; model I consists of standard hardcore RTPs, while model II is an analytically tractable variant of model I, called a long-ranged lattice gas (LLG). We show that, in the limit of L large, the fluctuation of cumulative current Q_{i}(T,L) across the ith bond in a time interval T≫1/D grows first subdiffusively and then diffusively (linearly) with T: 〈Q_{i}^{2}〉∼T^{α} with α=1/2 for 1/D≪T≪L^{2}/D and α=1 for T≫L^{2}/D, where D(ρ,γ) is the collective- or bulk-diffusion coefficient; at small times T≪1/D, exponent α depends on the details. Remarkably, regardless of the model details, the scaled bond-current fluctuations D〈Q_{i}^{2}(T,L)〉/2χL≡W(y) as a function of scaled variable y=DT/L^{2} collapse onto a universal scaling curve W(y), where χ(ρ,γ) is the collective particle mobility. In the limit of small density and tumbling rate, ρ,γ→0, with ψ=ρ/γ fixed, there exists a scaling law: The scaled mobility γ^{a}χ(ρ,γ)/χ^{(0)}≡H(ψ) as a function of ψ collapses onto a scaling curve H(ψ), where a=1 and 2 in models I and II, respectively, and χ^{(0)} is the mobility in the limiting case of a symmetric simple exclusion process; notably, the scaling function H(ψ) is model dependent. For model II (LLG), we calculate exactly, within a truncation scheme, both the scaling functions, W(y) and H(ψ). We also calculate spatial correlation functions for the current and compare our theory with simulation results of model I; for both models, the correlation functions decay exponentially, with correlation length ξ∼τ_{p}^{1/2} diverging with persistence time τ_{p}≫1. Overall, our theory is in excellent agreement with simulations and complements the prior findings [T. Chakraborty and P. Pradhan, Phys. Rev. E 109, 024124 (2024)1539-375510.1103/PhysRevE.109.024124].

Dynamics of self-propelled particles in vibrated dense granular media

We study a system consisting of a few self-propelled particles (SPPs) placed among a crowd of densely packed granular particles that are vertically vibrated in a two-dimensional circular confinement. Our experiments reveal two important findings. First, an SPP exhibits a fractal renewal process within the dense granular medium, which induces a superdiffusive behavior whose diffusion exponent increases with its aspect ratio. Second, the SPPs eventually reach the boundary and form a moving cluster, which transitions from the moving state to the static state as the number of SPPs is increased. These results suggest a simple and effective method of modulating the fluidity and directionality of granular systems via controlling the shape and the number of SPPs.

When an active bath behaves as an equilibrium one

Active scalar baths consisting of active Brownian particles are characterized by a non-Gaussian velocity distribution, a kinetic temperature, and a diffusion coefficient that scale with the square of the active velocity v_{0}. While these results hold in overdamped active systems, inertial effects lead to normal velocity distributions, with kinetic temperature and diffusion coefficient increasing as ∼v_{0}^{α} with 1<α<2. Remarkably, the late-time diffusivity and mobility decrease with mass. Moreover, we show that the equilibrium Einstein relation is asymptotically recovered with inertia. In summary, the inertial mass restores an equilibriumlike behavior.

Time-dependent properties of run-and-tumble particles: Density relaxation

We characterize collective diffusion of hardcore run-and-tumble particles (RTPs) by explicitly calculating the bulk-diffusion coefficient D(ρ,γ) for arbitrary density ρ and tumbling rate γ, in systems on a d-dimensional periodic lattice. We study two minimal models of RTPs: Model I is the standard version of hardcore RTPs introduced in [Phys. Rev. E 89, 012706 (2014)10.1103/PhysRevE.89.012706], whereas model II is a long-ranged lattice gas (LLG) with hardcore exclusion, an analytically tractable variant of model I. We calculate the bulk-diffusion coefficient analytically for model II and numerically for model I through an efficient Monte Carlo algorithm; notably, both models have qualitatively similar features. In the strong-persistence limit γ→0 (i.e., dimensionless ratio r_{0}γ/v→0), with v and r_{0} being the self-propulsion speed and particle diameter, respectively, the fascinating interplay between persistence and interaction is quantified in terms of two length scales: (i) persistence length l_{p}=v/γ and (ii) a "mean free path," being a measure of the average empty stretch or gap size in the hopping direction. We find that the bulk-diffusion coefficient varies as a power law in a wide range of density: D∝ρ^{-α}, with exponent α gradually crossing over from α=2 at high densities to α=0 at low densities. As a result, the density relaxation is governed by a nonlinear diffusion equation with anomalous spatiotemporal scaling. In the thermodynamic limit, we show that the bulk-diffusion coefficient-for ρ,γ→0 with ρ/γ fixed-has a scaling form D(ρ,γ)=D^{(0)}F(ρav/γ), where a∼r_{0}^{d-1} is particle cross section and D^{(0)} is proportional to the diffusion coefficient of noninteracting particles; the scaling function F(ψ) is calculated analytically for model II (LLG) and numerically for model I. Our arguments are independent of dimensions and microscopic details.

Anisotropic Diffusion of Elongated Particles in Active Coherent Flows

The study of particle diffusion, a classical conundrum in scientific inquiry, holds manifold implications for various real-world applications. Particularly within the domain of active flows, where the motion of self-propelled particles instigates fluid movement, extensive research has been dedicated to unraveling the dynamics of passive spherical particles. This scrutiny has unearthed intriguing phenomena, such as superdiffusion at brief temporal scales and conventional diffusion at longer intervals. In contrast to the spherical counterparts, anisotropic particles, which manifest directional variations, are prevalent in nature. Although anisotropic behavior in passive fluids has been subject to exploration, enigmatic aspects persist in comprehending the interplay of anisotropic particles within active flows. This research delves into the intricacies of anisotropic passive particle diffusion, exposing a notable escalation in translational and rotational diffusion coefficients, as well as the superdiffusion index, contingent upon bacterial concentration. Through a detailed examination of particle coordinates, the directional preference of particle diffusion is not solely dependent on the particle length, but rather determined by the ratio of the particle length to the associated length scale of the background flow field. These revelations accentuate the paramount importance of unraveling the nuances of anisotropic particle diffusion within the context of active flows. Such insights not only contribute to the fundamental understanding of particle dynamics, but also have potential implications for a spectrum of applications.

Symmetry-breaking motility of penetrable objects in active fluids

We investigate how a symmetric penetrable object immersed in an active fluid becomes motile due to a negative drag acting in the direction of its velocity. While similar phenomena have been reported only for active fluids that possess polar or nematic order, we demonstrate that such motility can occur even in active fluids without any preexisting order. The emergence of object motility is characterized by both continuous and discontinuous transitions associated with the symmetry-breaking bifurcation of the object's steady-state velocity. Furthermore, we also discuss the relevance of the transitions to the nonmonotonic particle-size dependence of the object's diffusion coefficient.

Work distribution of a colloid in an elongational flow field and under Ornstein-Uhlenbeck noise

The study of thermodynamic properties of microscopic systems, such as a colloid in a fluid, has been of great interest to researchers since the discovery of the fluctuation theorem and associated laws of stochastic thermodynamics. However, most of these studies confine themselves to systems where effective fluctuations acting on the colloid are in the form of delta-correlated Gaussian white noise (GWN). In this study, instead, we look into the work distribution function when a colloid trapped in a harmonic potential moves from one position to another in a fluid medium with an elongational flow field where the effective fluctuations are given by the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck noise, a type of colored noise. We use path integrals to calculate this distribution function and compare and contrast its properties to the case with GWN. We find that the work distribution function turns out to be non-Gaussian as a result of the elongational flow field but continues to obey the fluctuation theorem in both types of noise. Further, we also look into the effects of the various system parameters on the behavior of work fluctuations and find that although the distribution tends to broaden with increasing noise intensity, increased correlation in fluctuations acts to oppose this effect. Additionally, the system is found to consume heat from the surroundings at early times and dissipate it into the media at later times. This study, therefore, is a step towards gaining a better understanding of the thermodynamic properties of colloidal systems under nonlinear complex flows that also display correlated fluctuations.

Universal Poisson statistics of a passive tracer diffusing in dilute active suspensions

The statistics of a passive tracer immersed in a suspension of active particles (swimmers) is derived from first principles by considering a perturbative expansion of the tracer interaction with the microscopic swimmer field. To first order in the swimmer density, the tracer statistics is shown to be exactly represented by a spatial Poisson process combined with independent tracer-swimmer scattering events, rigorously reducing the multiparticle dynamics to two-body interactions. The Poisson representation is valid in any dimension, for arbitrary interaction forces and for a large class of swimmer dynamics. The framework not only allows for the systematic calculation of the tracer statistics in various dynamical regimes but highlights in particular surprising universal features that are independent of the swimmer dynamics such as a time-independent velocity distribution.

Trapped tracer in a non-equilibrium bath: dynamics and energetics

We study the dynamics of a tracer that is elastically coupled to active particles being kept at two different temperatures, as a prototype of tracer dynamics in a non-equilibrium bath. Employing analytical techniques, we find the exact solution of the probability density function for the effective motion of the tracer. The analytical results are supported by numerical simulations. By combining the experimentally accessible quantities such as the response function and the power spectrum, we measure the non-equilibrium fluctuations in terms of the effective temperature. In addition, we compute the energy dissipation rate to find the precise effects of activity. Our study is relevant in understanding athermal fluctuations arising in cytoskeletal networks or inside a chromosome.

Heterogeneous anomalous transport in cellular and molecular biology

It is well established that a wide variety of phenomena in cellular and molecular biology involve anomalous transport e.g. the statistics for the motility of cells and molecules are fractional and do not conform to the archetypes of simple diffusion or ballistic transport. Recent research demonstrates that anomalous transport is in many cases heterogeneous in both time and space. Thus single anomalous exponents and single generalised diffusion coefficients are unable to satisfactorily describe many crucial phenomena in cellular and molecular biology. We consider advances in the field ofheterogeneous anomalous transport(HAT) highlighting: experimental techniques (single molecule methods, microscopy, image analysis, fluorescence correlation spectroscopy, inelastic neutron scattering, and nuclear magnetic resonance), theoretical tools for data analysis (robust statistical methods such as first passage probabilities, survival analysis, different varieties of mean square displacements, etc), analytic theory and generative theoretical models based on simulations. Special emphasis is made on high throughput analysis techniques based on machine learning and neural networks. Furthermore, we consider anomalous transport in the context of microrheology and the heterogeneous viscoelasticity of complex fluids. HAT in the wavefronts of reaction-diffusion systems is also considered since it plays an important role in morphogenesis and signalling. In addition, we present specific examples from cellular biology including embryonic cells, leucocytes, cancer cells, bacterial cells, bacterial biofilms, and eukaryotic microorganisms. Case studies from molecular biology include DNA, membranes, endosomal transport, endoplasmic reticula, mucins, globular proteins, and amyloids.

Cooperation and competition in the collective drive by motor proteins: mean active force, fluctuations, and self-load

We consider the dynamics of a bio-filament under the collective drive of motor proteins. They are attached irreversibly to a substrate and undergo stochastic attachment-detachment with the filament to produce a directed force on it. We establish the dependence of the mean directed force and force correlations on the parameters describing the individual motor proteins using analytical theory and direct numerical simulations. The effective Langevin description for the filament motion gives mean-squared displacement, asymptotic diffusion constant, and mobility leading to an effective temperature. Finally, we show how competition between motor protein extensions generates a self-load, describable in terms of the effective temperature, affecting the filament motion.

Stationary states of activity-driven harmonic chains

We study the stationary state of a chain of harmonic oscillators driven by two active reservoirs at the two ends. These reservoirs exert correlated stochastic forces on the boundary oscillators which eventually leads to a nonequilibrium stationary state of the system. We consider three most well-known dynamics for the active force, namely, the active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process, run-and-tumble process, and active Brownian process, all of which have exponentially decaying two-point temporal correlations but very different higher-order fluctuations. We show that, irrespective of the specific dynamics of the drive, the stationary velocity fluctuations are Gaussian in nature with a kinetic temperature which remains uniform in the bulk. Moreover, we find the emergence of an "equipartition of energy" in the bulk of the system-the bulk kinetic temperature equals the bulk potential temperature in the thermodynamic limit. We also calculate the stationary distribution of the instantaneous energy current in the bulk which always shows a logarithmic divergence near the origin and asymmetric exponential tails. The signatures of specific active driving become visible in the behavior of the oscillators near the boundary. This is most prominent for the RTP- and ABP-driven chains where the boundary velocity distributions become non-Gaussian and the current distribution has a finite cutoff.

Harvesting information to control nonequilibrium states of active matter

We propose to use a correlated noise bath to drive an optically trapped Brownian particle that mimics active biological matter. Due to the flexibility and precision of our setup, we are able to control the different parameters that drive the stochastic motion of the particle with unprecedented accuracy, thus reaching strongly correlated regimes that are not easily accessible with real active matter. In particular, by using the correlation time (i.e., the "color") of the noise as a control parameter, we can trigger transitions between two nonequilibrium steady states with no expended work, but only a calorific cost. Remarkably, the measured heat production is directly proportional to the spectral entropy of the correlated noise, in a fashion that is reminiscent of Landauer's principle. Our procedure can be viewed as a method for harvesting information from the active fluctuations.

Passive objects in confined active fluids: A localization transition

We study how walls confining active fluids interact with asymmetric passive objects placed in their bulk. We show that the objects experience nonconservative long-ranged forces mediated by the active bath. To leading order, these forces can be computed using a generalized image theorem. The walls repel asymmetric objects, irrespective of their microscopic properties or their orientations. For circular cavities, we demonstrate how this may lead to the localization of asymmetric objects in the center of the cavity, something impossible for symmetric ones.
