Nonlinear Interferometry for Quantum-Enhanced Measurements of Multiphoton Absorption

Nonlinear and nonlinear-linear hybrid interferometers using coherent and squeezed vacuum states

Classical and quantum states working in concert play an essential role in high-precision interferometry. In this regard, coherent combined with squeezed vacuum states are the most promising candidate. Here we complement this subject by comparing nonlinear and nonlinear-linear hybrid interferometers with homodyne detection as a readout strategy. For a high-photon coherent state, either of the two interferometers can provide the phase sensitivity approaching the quantum Cramer-Rao bound. Additionally, we discuss the impacts of photon loss during the transmission and readout stages. We find that a nonlinear interferometer is advantageous over a nonlinear-linear hybrid interferometer. With increasing photon number of the coherent state, the maximal tolerable lossy rate ensuring phase sensitivity beyond the shot-noise limit is close to 50%. Our work may deepen the understanding of quantum-enhanced interferometry using nonlinear dynamics.

Two-photon absorption cross sections of pulsed entangled beams

Entangled two-photon absorption (ETPA) could form the basis of nonlinear quantum spectroscopy at very low photon fluxes, since, at sufficiently low photon fluxes, ETPA scales linearly with the photon flux. When different pairs start to overlap temporally, accidental coincidences are thought to give rise to a "classical" quadratic scaling that dominates the signal at large photon fluxes and, thus, recovers a supposedly classical regime, where any quantum advantage is thought to be lost. Here, we scrutinize this assumption and demonstrate that quantum-enhanced absorption cross sections can persist even for very large photon numbers. To this end, we use a minimal model for quantum light, which can interpolate continuously between the entangled pair and a high-photon-flux limit, to analytically derive ETPA cross sections and the intensity crossover regime. We investigate the interplay between spectral and spatial degrees of freedom and how linewidth broadening of the sample impacts the experimentally achievable enhancement.

Third-order nonlinear optical properties of highly electron deficient, nonplanar push-pull porphyrins: β-nitro-hexa-substituted porphyrins bearing bromo, phenyl, and phenylethynyl groups

β-Heptasubstituted porphyrins [MTPP(NO2)X6; M = 2H, NiII, CuII, and ZnII; X = Br, Ph, and PE] were synthesized and their third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties explored using the single-beam Z-scan technique with femtosecond, MHz pulses in the visible range. The three-photon absorption (γ), third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility (χ3), three-photon absorption cross-section (σ3), and nonlinear refractive index (n2) have been determined from theoretical fits with experimental results. The sign and magnitude of the nonlinear refractive index (n2) have been obtained from the closed-aperture experiment while the three-photon absorption coefficient and three-photon absorption cross-section were determined from the open-aperture experiment. The magnitudes of the 3PA and σ3 extended in the range of (2.7-3.4) × 10-23 cm3 W-2 and (5.5-7.0) × 10-78 cm6 s2, respectively. The higher magnitude of the NLO coefficients ensures their utility in optical and photonic applications.
