Large dielectric constants and massive carriers in La2CuO4

Large-bipolaron liquids in cuprate superconductors

Uniquely, large-bipolarons' self-trapped holes occupy superoxygens, each comprising four oxygens circumscribed by four coppers in a CuO2 plane, formed as oxygens relax inward and coppers relax outward. Critically, concomitant oxygen-to-copper electron transfer eliminates copper spins. The d-symmetry of superoxygens' ground state molecular orbital tracks the superoxygens' predominant zero-point radial vibrations. These large bipolarons' distinctive charge transport, absorption, magnetism, local atomic vibrations, condensation into a liquid, and subsequent superconductivity are consistent with cuprate superconductors' long-established unusual properties.

Phase diagram of cuprate high-temperature superconductors described by a field theory based on anharmonic oxygen degrees of freedom

In high temperature superconductors, although some phenomena such as the Mott transition (MT) at low doping are clearly driven by electron correlations, recent experimental data imply that anharmonic oxygen degrees of freedom-characteristic of perovskite materials-are playing a significant role. A key test of the role of anharmonic oxygen is to reproduce the complex cuprate phase diagram from a simple model. Here, we show that a field theory based on nonlinear coupling to anharmonic oxygens, parametrized from ab initio calculations, quantitatively reproduces the cuprate phase diagram for dopings above the MT. Pairing is mediated by renormalized oxygen vibrations transmuted into excitations of the pseudogap. The observed strong dependence of gap to transition temperature ratio on Tc also emerges from this field theory. This work suggests that including vibrational degrees of freedom is key to developing a complete understanding of the cuprates.

Dielectric versus magnetic pairing mechanisms in high-temperature cuprate superconductors investigated using Raman scattering

We suggest, and demonstrate, a systematic approach to the study of cuprate superconductors, namely, progressive change of ion size in order to systematically alter the interaction strength and other key parameters. R(Ba,Sr)2Cu3Oy (R={La,…,Lu,Y}) is such a system where potentially obscuring structural changes are minimal. We thereby systematically alter both dielectric and magnetic properties. Dielectric fluctuation is characterized by ionic polarizability while magnetic fluctuation is characterized by exchange interactions measurable by Raman scattering. The range of transition temperatures is 70-107 K, and we find that these correlate only with the dielectric properties, a behavior which persists with external pressure. The ultimate significance may remain to be proven, but it highlights the role of dielectric screening in the cuprates and adds support to a previously proposed novel pairing mechanism involving exchange of quantized waves of electronic polarization.

Charged particles on a two-dimensional lattice subject to anisotropic Jahn-Teller interactions

The properties of a system of charged particles on a 2D lattice, subject to an anisotropic Jahn-Teller-type interaction and 3D Coulomb repulsion, are investigated. In the mean-field approximation without Coulomb interaction, the system displays a phase transition of first order. When the long-range Coulomb interaction is included, Monte Carlo simulations show that the system displays very diverse mesoscopic textures, ranging from spatially disordered pairs to ordered arrays of stripes, or charged clusters, depending only on the ratio of the two interactions (and the particle density). Remarkably, charged objects with an even number of particles are more stable than with an odd number of particles. We suggest that the diverse functional behavior-including superconductivity-observed in oxides can be thought to arise from the self-organization of this type.

Axial Oxygen-Centered Lattice Instabilities and High-Temperature Superconductivity

Copper K-edge x-ray absorption data indicate that an axial oxygen-centered lattice instability accompanying the 93 K superconducting transition in YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7) is of a pseudo-(anti)ferroelectric type, in that it appears to involve the softening of a double potential well into a structure in which the difference between the two copper-oxygen distances and the barrier height have both decreased. This softer structure is present only at temperatures within a fluctuation region around the transition. A similar process involving the analogous axial oxygen atom also accompanies the superconducting transition in T1Ba(2)Ca(3)Cu(4)O(11), where the superconducting transition temperature T(c) is ~120 K. The mean square relative displacement of this oxygen atom in YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7) is also specifically affected by a reduction in the oxygen content and by the substitution of cobalt for copper, providing further evidence for the sensitivity of the displacement to additional factors that also influence the superconductivity. On the basis of the implied coupling of this ionic motion to the superconductivity, a scenario for high-temperature superconductivity is presented in which both phonon and electronic (charge transfer) channels are synergistically involved.
