Mended symmetries

piN and pipiN couplings of the Delta(1232) and its chiral partners

We investigate the interactions and chiral properties of the four spin-3/2 baryons N(-)(D13), N+(P13), Delta+(P33), and Delta(-)(D33) together with the nucleon. We construct the SU(2)R x SU(2)L invariant interactions between the spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 baryons with the aid of a new, specially developed spin and isospin projection technique for these baryon fields, where the chiral invariant interactions contain one- and two-pion couplings. We obtain simple relations for the coupling constants of the one- and two-pion spin-1/2-3/2 transitions terms. The relation for the one-pion interactions reasonably agrees with the experiments, which suggests that these spin-3/2 baryons are chiral partners.

Matter formed at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider

We suggest that the "new form of matter" found just above T(c) by the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider is made up of tightly bound quark-antiquark pairs, essentially 32 chirally restored (more precisely, nearly massless) mesons of the quantum numbers of pi, sigma, rho, and a1. Taking the results of lattice gauge simulations (LGS) for the color Coulomb potential from the work of the Bielefeld group and feeding this into a relativistic two-body code, after modifying the heavy-quark lattice results so as to include the velocity-velocity interaction, all ground-state eigenvalues of the 32 mesons go to zero at T(c) just as they do from below T(c) as predicted by the vector manifestation of hidden local symmetry. This could explain the rapid rise in entropy up to T(c) found in LGS calculations. We argue that how the dynamics work can be understood from the behavior of the hard and soft glue.

Parity doubling and SU(2)LxSU(2)R restoration in the hadron spectrum

We construct the most general nonlinear representation of chiral SU(2)LxSU(2)R broken down spontaneously to the isospin SU(2), on a pair of hadrons of same spin and isospin and opposite parity. We show that any such representation is equivalent, through a hadron field transformation, to two irreducible representations on two hadrons of opposite parity with different masses and axial-vector couplings. This implies that chiral symmetry realized in the Nambu-Goldstone mode does not predict the existence of degenerate multiplets of hadrons of opposite parity nor any relations between their couplings or masses.

Vector manifestation of chiral symmetry

We propose "vector manifestation" (VM) of the Wigner realization of chiral symmetry in which the symmetry is restored at the critical point by the massless degenerate pion (and its flavor partners) and the rho meson (and its flavor partners) as the chiral partner, in sharp contrast to the traditional manifestation á la the linear sigma model where the symmetry is restored by the degenerate pion and the scalar meson. The application to the chiral phase transition of large N(f) QCD is performed using the hidden local symmetry Lagrangian. Combined with the Wilsonian matching proposed recently, VM determines the critical number of massless flavors N(f) approximately equal to 5 without much ambiguity.
