Abstract
We determined electronic relaxation times via pump-probe optical spectroscopy using sub-15 fs pulses for the normal state of two different cuprate superconductors. We show that the primary relaxation process is the electron-phonon interaction and extract a measure of its strength, the second moment of the Eliashberg function λ[ω2] = 800 ± 200 meV2 for La(1.85)Sr(0.15)CuO4 and λ[ω2] = 400 ± 100 meV2 for YBa(2)Cu(3)O(6.5). These values suggest a possible fundamental role of the electron-phonon interaction in the superconducting pairing mechanism.

Abstract
The present study highlights self-consistently helpful improvements dedicated to overcoming the difficulty resulting from the fitting procedure of integrated Raman intensities recorded according to the rotation crystal method described earlier. To this end, the anisotropy factors of Raman polarizabilities and the corresponding relative phases are determined within the framework of the exact mathematical derivation of the phase factors. These are the relevant parameters of the Raman efficiency relations which are numerically difficult to obtain from the fitting of the integrated areas. The present theoretical approach is then applied to the modes of the A(1) and Ey symmetry species of the lithium niobate (LN) crystal point group. All the expressions of the Raman absolute intensities of the A(1) and Ey irreducible representations initially imply three parameters to be determined from the fitting computations. However, from the derived analytical expressions of the phase differences, the number of parameters involved in the fitting procedure is reduced from 3 to 2, thus improving the statistics of the numerical treatment.

Abstract
We report on the response of the electronic continuum from inelastic light-scattering experiments over an extended energy range between 1.970 and 4.504 eV in the superconducting state of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8. The formation of a substantial Raman feature at shifts below twice the superconducting gap as well as the additional weight above this energy are found to be strongly dependent on the incident photon energy. For excitation wavelengths observed in ultraviolet, we find an enhancement of the integrated spectral weight below T(c). The resulting composite feature shows three distinct resonances at 2.5, 3.3, and 3.8 eV. We strongly suggest that the superconductivity-induced changes are the result of both the opening of a superconducting gap and the appearance of a collective mode.

Abstract
Using a first-principles approach, we calculate Raman spectra for a model structure of vitreous silica. We develop a perturbational method for calculating the dielectric tensor in an ultrasoft pseudopotential scheme and obtain Raman coupling tensors by finite differences with respect to atomic displacements. For frequencies below 1000 cm(-1), the parallel-polarized Raman spectrum of vitreous silica is dominated by oxygen bending motions, showing a strong sensitivity to the intermediate range structure. By modeling the Raman coupling, we derive estimates for the concentrations of three- and four-membered rings from the experimental intensities of the Raman defect lines.
