Pressure-induced metallization and the collapse of the magnetic state in the antiferromagnetic insulator NiI2

Strain Tunability of Perpendicular Magnetic Anisotropy in van der Waals Ferromagnets VI3

Layered ferromagnets with strong magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) have special applications in nanoscale memory elements in electronic circuits. Here, we report a strain tunability of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnets VI₃ using magnetic circular dichroism measurements. For an unstrained flake, the M-H curve shows a rectangular-shaped hysteresis loop with a large coercivity (1.775 T at 10 K) and remanent magnetization. Furthermore, the coercivity can be enhanced to a maximum of 2.6 T under a 3.8% external in-plane tensile strain. Our DFT calculations show that the increased MAE under strain contributes to the enhancement of coercivity. Meanwhile, the strain tunability on the coercivity of CrI₃, with a similar crystal structure, is limited. The main reason is the strong spin-orbit coupling in V³⁺ in VI₆ octahedra in comparison with that in Cr³⁺. The strain tunability of coercivity in VI₃ flakes highlights its potential for integration into vdW heterostructures.

Quantum anomalous Hall effect in germanene by proximity coupling to a semiconducting ferromagnetic substrate NiI2

Interfaces between materials are ubiquitous in materials science, especially in devices. As device dimensions continue to be reduced, understanding the physical characteristics that appear at interfaces is crucial to exploit them for applications, spintronics in this case. Here, based on first-principles calculations, we propose a general and tunable platform to realize an exotic quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) with the germanene monolayer by proximity coupling to a semiconducting ferromagnetic NiI₂ (Ge/NiI₂). Through analysis of the Berry curvature and band structure with spin-orbit coupling, the QAHE phase with an integer Chern number (C = -1), which is induced by band inversion between Ge-p orbitals, can achieve complete spin polarization for low-dissipation electronic devices. Also, the proximity coupling between germanene and the NiI₂ substrate makes the non-trivial bandgap reach up to 85 meV, and the Curie temperature of the Ge/NiI₂ heterostructure (HTS) is enhanced to 238 K, which is much higher than that of pristine NiI₂. An effective k·p model is proposed to clarify the quantum phenomena in the Ge/NiI₂ HTS. These findings shed light on the possible role of magnetic proximity effects on condensed matter physics in germanene and open new perspectives for multifunctional spin quantum devices in spintronics.

Extended Falicov-Kimball model: Hartree-Fock vs DMFT approach

In this work, we study the extended Falicov-Kimball model at half-filling within the Hartree-Fock approach (HFA) (for various crystal lattices) and compare the results obtained with the rigorous ones derived within the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). The model describes a system, where electrons with spin-↓ are itinerant (with hopping amplitude t), whereas those with spin-↑ are localized. The particles interact via on-site U and intersite V density-density Coulomb interactions. We show that the HFA description of the ground state properties of the model is equivalent to the exact DMFT solution and provides a qualitatively correct picture also for a range of small temperatures. It does capture the discontinuous transition between ordered phases at U = 2V for small temperatures as well as correct features of the continuous order-disorder transition. However, the HFA predicts that the discontinuous boundary ends at the isolated-critical point (of the liquid-gas type) and it does not merge with the continuous boundary. This approach cannot also describe properly a change of order of the continuous transition for large V as well as various metal-insulator transitions found within the DMFT.

Polymorphism in Post-Dichalcogenide Two-Dimensional Materials

Two-dimensional (2D) materials exhibit a wide range of atomic structures, compositions, and associated versatility of properties. Furthermore, for a given composition, a variety of different crystal structures (i.e., polymorphs) can be observed. Polymorphism in 2D materials presents a fertile landscape for designing novel architectures and imparting new functionalities. The objective of this Review is to identify the polymorphs of emerging 2D materials, describe their polymorph-dependent properties, and outline methods used for polymorph control. Since traditional 2D materials (e.g., graphene, hexagonal boron nitride, and transition metal dichalcogenides) have already been studied extensively, the focus here is on polymorphism in post-dichalcogenide 2D materials including group III, IV, and V elemental 2D materials, layered group III, IV, and V metal chalcogenides, and 2D transition metal halides. In addition to providing a comprehensive survey of recent experimental and theoretical literature, this Review identifies the most promising opportunities for future research including how 2D polymorph engineering can provide a pathway to materials by design.

2D Materials and Heterostructures at Extreme Pressure

2D materials possess wide-tuning properties ranging from semiconducting and metallization to superconducting, etc., which are determined by their structure, empowering them to be appealing in optoelectronic and photovoltaic applications. Pressure is an effective and clean tool that allows modifications of the electronic structure, crystal structure, morphologies, and compositions of 2D materials through van der Waals (vdW) interaction engineering. This enables an insightful understanding of the variable vdW interaction induced structural changes, structure-property relations as well as contributes to the versatile implications of 2D materials. Here, the recent progress of high-pressure research toward 2D materials and heterostructures, involving graphene, boron nitride, transition metal dichalcogenides, 2D perovskites, black phosphorene, MXene, and covalent-organic frameworks, using diamond anvil cell is summarized. A detailed analysis of pressurized structure, phonon dynamics, superconducting, metallization, doping together with optical property is performed. Further, the pressure-induced optimized properties and potential applications as well as the vision of engineering the vdW interactions in heterostructures are highlighted. Finally, conclusions and outlook are presented on the way forward.

Pressure-Induced Collapse of Magnetic Order in Jarosite

We report a pressure-induced phase transition in the frustrated kagomé material jarosite at ∼45  GPa, which leads to the disappearance of magnetic order. Using a suite of experimental techniques, we characterize the structural, electronic, and magnetic changes in jarosite through this phase transition. Synchrotron powder x-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy experiments, analyzed in aggregate with the results from density functional theory calculations, indicate that the material changes from a R3[over ¯]m structure to a structure with a R3[over ¯]c space group. The resulting phase features a rare twisted kagomé lattice in which the integrity of the equilateral Fe^{3+} triangles persists. Based on symmetry arguments we hypothesize that the resulting structural changes alter the magnetic interactions to favor a possible quantum paramagnetic phase at high pressure.

Tunable spin-polarized band gap in Si2/NiI2 vdW heterostructure

Using density functional theory (DFT) calculations we investigate the structural and electronic properties of a heterogeneous van der Waals (vdW) structure consisting of silicene and NiI₂ single layers. We observe an interaction between the two layers with a net charge transfer from the ferromagnetic semiconductor NiI₂ to silicene, breaking the inversion symmetry of the silicene structure. However, the charges flow in opposite directions for the two spin channels, which leads to a vdW heterostructure with a spin-polarized band gap between the π and π* states. The band gap can be tuned by controlling the vertical distance between the layers. The features shown by this vdW heterostructure are new, and we believe that silicene on a NiI₂ layer can be used to construct heterostructures which have appropriate properties to be used in nanodevices where control of the spin-dependent carrier mobility is necessary and can be incorporated into silicon based electronics.

The role of correlations in the high-pressure phase of FeSe

This study addresses the structural and electronic properties of the NiAs- and MnP-type phases dominating in FeSe at high pressures. The analysis is performed using first-principle band structure calculations within the framework of the B3LYP hybrid exchange-correlation functional. Based on the volume-pressure relation deduced from the available experimental data, we optimize the form and internal coordinates of the unit cell, which agree reasonably well with experiment. In particular, the present calculations resolve the structural NiAs-MnP phase transition which occurs at about 10 GPa. Both structures are found to be semiconducting at low pressures and metallizing at about 80-90 GPa. Using the complementary LDA + U approach the semiconducting state can be explained as the result of the strong local correlations within the Fe d-shell.

Magnetic Collapse in Transition Metal Oxides at High Pressure: Implications for the Earth

Magnetic collapse in transition metal ions is predicted from first-principles computations at pressures reached in the Earth's lower mantle and core. Magnetic collapse would lead to marked changes in geophysically important properties, such as elasticity and conductivity, and also to different geochemical behavior, such as element partitioning, than estimated by extrapolating low-pressure data, and thus change the understanding of Earth's structure and evolution. Magnetic collapse results from band widening rather than from changes in crystal field splitting under pressure. Seismic anomalies in the outer core and the lowermost mantle may be due to magnetic collapse of ferrous iron, dissolved in iron liquid in the outer core, and in solution in magnesiowustite in the lowermost mantle.
