Abstract
In this tribute to K Alex Müller, I describe how his early insights have influenced future decades of research on perovskite ferroelectrics and more broadly transition metal oxides (TMOs) and related quantum materials. I use his influence on my own research journey to discuss impacts in three areas: structural phase transitions, precursor structure, and quantum paraelectricity. I emphasize materials functionality in ground, metastable, and excited states arising from competitions among lattice, charge, and spin degrees of freedom, which results in highly tunable landscapes and complex networks of multiscale configurations controlling macroscopic functions. I discuss competitions between short- and long-range forces as particularly important in TMOs (and related materials classes) because of their localized and directional metal orbitals and the polarizable oxygen ions. I emphasize crucial consequences of elasticity and metal–oxygen charge transfer.

Abstract
The effect of electron-lattice interaction is studied for a strongly correlated electron system described by the two-band Hubbard model. A two-fold effect of electron-lattice interaction is taken into account: in non-diagonal terms, it changes the effective bandwidth, whereas in diagonal terms, it shifts the positions of the bands and the chemical potential. It is shown that this interaction significantly affects the doping range corresponding to the electronic phase separation and can even lead to a jump-like transition between states with different values of strains.

Abstract
Much theoretical work has been devoted to understanding the role of strong electron correlations in high-temperature superconductivity mainly through magnetic interactions, but the possible role of electron correlation in ferroelectricity of metal oxides has not received attention. Diagonalization of a simple many-body, tight-binding Hamiltonian shows that the electron-lattice interaction is dramatically enhanced in some cases by strong electron correlation because of deformation-induced charge transfer. This effect may be closely related to ferroelectricity and superconductivity in transition metal oxides.

Abstract
We study the dynamics of metallic vertical stripes in cuprates within the three-band Hubbard model based on a recently developed time-dependent Gutzwiller approximation. As doping increases, the optical conductivity shows transfer of spectral weight from the charge-transfer band towards (i) an incoherent band centered at 1.3 eV, (ii) a Drude peak, due mainly to motion along the stripe, and (iii) a low-energy collective mode which softens with doping and merges with (ii) at optimum doping in good agreement with experiment. The softening is related to the quasidegeneracy between Cu-centered and O-centered mean-field stripe solutions close to optimal doping.
